Abstract: In this paper, a two factor scheme is proposed to
generate cryptographic keys directly from biometric data, which
unlike passwords, are strongly bound to the user. Hash value of the
reference iris code is used as a cryptographic key and its length
depends only on the hash function, being independent of any other
parameter. The entropy of such keys is 94 bits, which is much higher
than any other comparable system. The most important and distinct
feature of this scheme is that it regenerates the reference iris code by
providing a genuine iris sample and the correct user password. Since
iris codes obtained from two images of the same eye are not exactly
the same, error correcting codes (Hadamard code and Reed-Solomon
code) are used to deal with the variability. The scheme proposed here
can be used to provide keys for a cryptographic system and/or for
user authentication. The performance of this system is evaluated on
two publicly available databases for iris biometrics namely CBS and
ICE databases. The operating point of the system (values of False
Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR)) can be set
by properly selecting the error correction capacity (ts) of the Reed-
Solomon codes, e.g., on the ICE database, at ts = 15, FAR is 0.096%
and FRR is 0.76%.
Abstract: Automatic reading of handwritten cheque is a computationally
complex process and it plays an important role in financial
risk management. Machine vision and learning provide a viable
solution to this problem. Research effort has mostly been focused
on recognizing diverse pitches of cheques and demand drafts with an
identical outline. However most of these methods employ templatematching
to localize the pitches and such schemes could potentially
fail when applied to different types of outline maintained by the
bank. In this paper, the so-called outline problem is resolved by
a cheque information tree (CIT), which generalizes the localizing
method to extract active-region-of-entities. In addition, the weight
based density plot (WBDP) is performed to isolate text entities and
read complete pitches. Recognition is based on texture features using
neural classifiers. Legal amount is subsequently recognized by both
texture and perceptual features. A post-processing phase is invoked
to detect the incorrect readings by Type-2 grammar using the Turing
machine. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated
using cheque and demand drafts of 22 different banks. The test data
consists of a collection of 1540 leafs obtained from 10 different
account holders from each bank. Results show that this approach
can easily be deployed without significant design amendments.
Abstract: The present energy situation and the concerns
about global warming has stimulated active research interest
in non-petroleum, carbon free compounds and non-polluting
fuels, particularly for transportation, power generation, and
agricultural sectors. Environmental concerns and limited
amount of petroleum fuels have caused interests in the
development of alternative fuels for internal combustion (IC)
engines. The petroleum crude reserves however, are declining
and consumption of transport fuels particularly in the
developing countries is increasing at high rates. Severe
shortage of liquid fuels derived from petroleum may be faced
in the second half of this century. Recently more and more
stringent environmental regulations being enacted in the USA
and Europe have led to the research and development
activities on clean alternative fuels. Among the gaseous fuels
hydrogen is considered to be one of the clean alternative fuel.
Hydrogen is an interesting candidate for future internal
combustion engine based power trains. In this experimental
investigation, the performance and combustion analysis were
carried out on a direct injection (DI) diesel engine using
hydrogen with diesel following the TMI(Time Manifold
Injection) technique at different injection timings of 10
degree,45 degree and 80 degree ATDC using an electronic
control unit (ECU) and injection durations were controlled.
Further, the tests have been carried out at a constant speed of
1500rpm at different load conditions and it can be observed
that brake thermal efficiency increases with increase in load
conditions with a maximum gain of 15% at full load
conditions during all injection strategies of hydrogen. It was
also observed that with the increase in hydrogen energy share
BSEC started reducing and it reduced to a maximum of 9% as
compared to baseline diesel at 10deg ATDC injection during
maximum injection proving the exceptional combustion
properties of hydrogen.
Abstract: The new status generated by technological advancements and changes in the global economy raises important issues on how communities and organisations need to innovate upon their traditional processes in order to adapt to the challenges of the Knowledge Society. The DialogoS+ European project aims to study the role of and promote social dialogue in the banking sector, strengthen the link between old and new members and make social dialogue at the European level a force for innovation and change, also given the context of the international crisis emerging in 2008- 2009. Under the scope of DialogoS+, this paper describes how the community of Europe-s banking sector trade unions attempted to adapt to the challenges of the Knowledge Society by exploiting the benefits of new channels of communication, learning, knowledge generation and diffusion focusing on the concept of roadmapping. Important dimensions of social dialogue such as collective bargaining and working conditions are addressed.
Abstract: Graduate attributes have received increasing attention
over recent years as universities incorporate these attributes into the
curriculum. Graduates who have adequate technical knowledge only
are not sufficiently equipped to compete effectively in the work
place; they also need non disciplinary skills ie, graduate attributes.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of an eportfolio
in a technical communication course to enhance engineering
students- graduate attributes: namely, learning of communication,
critical thinking and problem solving and teamwork skills. Two
questionnaires were used to elicit information from the students: one
on their preferred and the other on the actual learning process. In
addition, student perceptions of the use of eportfolio as a learning
tool were investigated. Preliminary findings showed that most of the
students- expectations have been met with their actual learning. This
indicated that eportfolio has the potential as a tool to enhance
students- graduate attributes.
Abstract: Mobile devices, which are progressively surrounded
in our everyday life, have created a new paradigm where they
interconnect, interact and collaborate with each other. This network
can be used for flexible and secure coordinated sharing. On the other
hand Grid computing provides dependable, consistent, pervasive, and
inexpensive access to high-end computational capabilities. In this
paper, efforts are made to map the concepts of Grid on Ad-Hoc
networks because both exhibit similar kind of characteristics like
Scalability, Dynamism and Heterogeneity. In this context we
propose “Mobile Ad-Hoc Services Grid – MASGRID".
Abstract: Vehicle which are turning or maneuvering at high speeds
are susceptible to sliding and subsequently deviate from desired path. In
this paper the dynamics governing the Yaw/Roll behavior of a vehicle
has been simulated. Two different simulations have been used one for
the real vehicle, for which a fuzzy controller is designed to increase its
directional stability property. The other simulation is for a hypothetical
vehicle with much higher tire cornering stiffness which is capable of
developing the required lateral forces at the tire-ground patch contact to
attain the desired lateral acceleration for the vehicle to follow the
desired path without slippage. This simulation model is our reference
model.
The logic for keeping the vehicle on the desired track in the cornering
or maneuvering state is to have some braking forces on the inner or
outer tires based on the direction of vehicle deviation from the desired
path. The inputs to our vehicle simulation model is steer angle δ and
vehicle velocity V , and the outputs can be any kinematical parameters
like yaw rate, yaw acceleration, side slip angle, rate of side slip angle
and so on. The proposed fuzzy controller is a feed forward controller.
This controller has two inputs which are steer angle δ and vehicle
velocity V, and the output of the controller is the correcting moment M,
which guides the vehicle back to the desired track. To develop the
membership functions for the controller inputs and output and the fuzzy
rules, the vehicle simulation has been run for 1000 times and the
correcting moment have been determined by trial and error. Results of
the vehicle simulation with fuzzy controller are very promising
and show the vehicle performance is enhanced greatly over the
vehicle without the controller. In fact the vehicle performance
with the controller is very near the performance of the reference
ideal model.
Abstract: Dengue virus is transmitted from person to person
through the biting of infected Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes. DEN-1,
DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4 are four serotypes of this virus. Infection
with one of these four serotypes apparently produces permanent
immunity to it, but only temporary cross immunity to the others. The
length of time during incubation of dengue virus in human and
mosquito are considered in this study. The dengue patients are
classified into infected and infectious classes. The infectious human
can transmit dengue virus to susceptible mosquitoes but infected
human can not. The transmission model of this disease is formulated.
The human population is divided into susceptible, infected, infectious
and recovered classes. The mosquito population is separated into
susceptible, infected and infectious classes. Only infectious
mosquitoes can transmit dengue virus to the susceptible human. We
analyze this model by using dynamical analysis method. The
threshold condition is discussed to reduce the outbreak of this
disease.
Abstract: The link between coordinate transformations in the plane and their effects on the graph of a function can be difficult for students studying college level mathematics to comprehend. To solidify this conceptual link in the mind of a student Microsoft Excel can serve as a convenient graphing tool and pedagogical aid. The authors of this paper describe how various transformations and their related functional symmetry properties can be graphically displayed with an Excel spreadsheet.
Abstract: This paper mainly studies the analyses of parameters
in the intersection collision avoidance (ICA) system based on the radar
sensors. The parameters include the positioning errors, the repeat
period of the radar sensor, the conditions of potential collisions of two
cross-path vehicles, etc. The analyses of the parameters can provide
the requirements, limitations, or specifications of this ICA system. In
these analyses, the positioning errors will be increased as the measured
vehicle approach the intersection. In addition, it is not necessary to
implement the radar sensor in higher position since the positioning
sensitivities become serious as the height of the radar sensor increases.
A concept of the safety buffer distances for front and rear of the
measured vehicle is also proposed. The conditions for potential
collisions of two cross-path vehicles are also presented to facilitate the
computation algorithm.
Abstract: In parallel, broadcasting has changed rapidly with the
changing of the world at the same area. Broadcasting is also
influenced and reshaped in terms of the emergence of new
communication technologies. These developments have resulted a lot
of economic and social consequences. The most important
consequences of these results are those of the powers of the
governments to control over the means of communication and control
mechanisms related to the descriptions of the new issues. For this
purpose, autonomous and independent regulatory bodies have been
established by the state. One of these regulatory bodies is the Radio
and Television Supreme Council, which to be established in 1994,
with the Code no 3984. Today’s Radio and Television Supreme
Council which is responsible for the regulation of the radio and
television broadcasts all across Turkey has an important and effective
position as autonomous and independent regulatory body. The Radio
and Television Supreme Council acts as being a remarkable organizer
for a sensitive area of radio and television broadcasting on one hand,
and the area of democratic, liberal and keep in mind the concept of
the public interest by putting certain principles for the functioning of
the Board control, in the context of media policy as one of the central
organs, on the other hand.
In this study, the role of the Radio and Television Supreme
Council is examined in accordance with the Code no 3894 in order to
control over the communication and control mechanisms as well as
the examination of the changes in the duties of the Code No. 6112,
dated 2011.
Abstract: Faced with social and health system capacity
constraints and rising and changing demand for welfare services,
governments and welfare providers are increasingly relying on
innovation to help support and enhance services. However, the
evidence reported by several studies indicates that the realization of
that potential is not an easy task. Innovations can be deemed
inherently complex to implement and operate, because many of them
involve a combination of technological and organizational renewal
within an environment featuring a diversity of stakeholders. Many
public welfare service innovations are markedly systemic in their
nature, which means that they emerge from, and must address, the
complex interplay between political, administrative, technological,
institutional and legal issues. This paper suggests that stakeholders
dealing with systemic innovation in welfare services must deal with
ambiguous and incomplete information in circumstances of
uncertainty. Employing a literature review methodology and case
study, this paper identifies, categorizes and discusses different
aspects of the uncertainty of systemic innovation in public welfare
services, and argues that uncertainty can be classified into eight
categories: technological uncertainty, market uncertainty,
regulatory/institutional uncertainty, social/political uncertainty,
acceptance/legitimacy uncertainty, managerial uncertainty, timing
uncertainty and consequence uncertainty.
Abstract: Currently, the Malaysian construction industry is
focusing on transforming construction processes from conventional
building methods to the Industrialized Building System (IBS). Still,
research on the decision making of IBS technology adoption with the
influence of contextual factors is scarce. The purpose of this paper is
to explore how contextual factors influence the IBS decision making
in building projects which is perceived by those involved in
construction industry namely construction stakeholders and IBS
supply chain members. Theoretical background, theoretical
frameworks and literatures which identify possible contextual factors
that influence decision making towards IBS technology adoption are
presented. This paper also discusses the importance of contextual
factors in IBS decision making, highlighting some possible crossover
benefits and making some suggestions as to how these can be
utilized. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made with
respect to the perception of socio-economic, IBS policy and IBS
technology associated with building projects.
Abstract: Computer languages are usually lumped together
into broad -paradigms-, leaving us in want of a finer classification
of kinds of language. Theories distinguishing between -genuine
differences- in language has been called for, and we propose that
such differences can be observed through a notion of expressive mode.
We outline this concept, propose how it could be operationalized and
indicate a possible context for the development of a corresponding
theory. Finally we consider a possible application in connection
with evaluation of language revision. We illustrate this with a case,
investigating possible revisions of the relational algebra in order to
overcome weaknesses of the division operator in connection with
universal queries.
Abstract: The emergence of blended learning has been
influenced by the rapid changes in Higher Education within the last
few years. However, there is a lack of studies that look into the future
of blended learning in the Saudi context. The most likely explanation
is that blended learning is relatively new and, with respect to learning
in general, under-researched. This study addresses this gap and
explores the views of lecturers and students towards the future of
blended learning in Saudi Arabia. This study was informed by the
interpretive paradigm that appears to be most appropriate to
understand and interpret the perceptions of students and instructors
towards a new learning environment. While globally there has been
considerable research on the perceptions of e-learning and blended
learning with its different models, there is plenty of space for further
research specifically in the Arab region, and in Saudi Arabia where
blended learning is now being introduced.
Abstract: A new digital watermarking technique for images that
are sensitive to blocking artifacts is presented. Experimental results
show that the proposed MDCT based approach produces highly
imperceptible watermarked images and is robust to attacks such as
compression, noise, filtering and geometric transformations. The
proposed MDCT watermarking technique is applied to fingerprints
for ensuring security. The face image and demographic text data of
an individual are used as multiple watermarks. An AFIS system was
used to quantitatively evaluate the matching performance of the
MDCT-based watermarked fingerprint. The high fingerprint
matching scores show that the MDCT approach is resilient to
blocking artifacts. The quality of the extracted face and extracted text
images was computed using two human visual system metrics and
the results show that the image quality was high.
Abstract: As the enormous amount of on-line text grows on the
World-Wide Web, the development of methods for automatically
summarizing this text becomes more important. The primary goal of
this research is to create an efficient tool that is able to summarize
large documents automatically. We propose an Evolving
connectionist System that is adaptive, incremental learning and
knowledge representation system that evolves its structure and
functionality. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for Part of
Speech disambiguation using a recurrent neural network, a paradigm
capable of dealing with sequential data. We observed that
connectionist approach to text summarization has a natural way of
learning grammatical structures through experience. Experimental
results show that our approach achieves acceptable performance.
Abstract: The creation of a sustainable future depends on the knowledge and involvement of the people, as well as an understanding of the consequences of individual actions. Construction industry has long been associated with the detrimental effects to our mother earth. In Malaysia, the government, professional bodies and private companies are beginning to take heed in the necessity to reduce this environmental problem without restraining the need for development. This paper focuses on the actions undertaken by the Malaysian government, non-government organizations and construction players in promoting sustainability in construction. To ensure that those concerted efforts are not only skin deep in its impact, a survey was conducted to investigate the awareness of the developers regarding this issue and whether those developers has absorb the concept of sustainable construction in their current practices. The survey revealed that although the developers are aware of the rising issues on sustainability, little efforts are generated from them in implementing it. More effort is necessary to boost this application and further stimulate actions and strategies towards a sustainable built environment.
Abstract: The complexity of today-s software systems makes
collaborative development necessary to accomplish tasks.
Frameworks are necessary to allow developers perform their tasks
independently yet collaboratively. Similarity detection is one of the
major issues to consider when developing such frameworks. It allows
developers to mine existing repositories when developing their own
views of a software artifact, and it is necessary for identifying the
correspondences between the views to allow merging them and
checking their consistency. Due to the importance of the
requirements specification stage in software development, this paper
proposes a framework for collaborative development of Object-
Oriented formal specifications along with a similarity detection
approach to support the creation, merging and consistency checking
of specifications. The paper also explores the impact of using
additional concepts on improving the matching results. Finally, the
proposed approach is empirically evaluated.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a reversible watermarking
scheme based on histogram shifting (HS) to embed watermark bits
into the H.264/AVC standard videos by modifying the last nonzero
level in the context adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) domain.
The proposed method collects all of the last nonzero coefficients (or
called last level coefficient) of 4×4 sub-macro blocks in a macro
block and utilizes predictions for the current last level from the
neighbor block-s last levels to embed watermark bits. The feature of
the proposed method is low computational and has the ability of
reversible recovery. The experimental results have demonstrated that
our proposed scheme has acceptable degradation on video quality and
output bit-rate for most test videos.
