Abstract: The index of sustainable functionality (ISF) is an adaptive, multi-criteria technique that is used to measure sustainability; it is a concept that can be transposed to many regions throughout the world. An ISF application of the Southern Regional Organisation of Councils (SouthROC) in South East Queensland (SEQ) – the fastest growing region in Australia – indicated over a 25 year period an increase of over 10% level of functionality from 58.0% to 68.3%. The ISF of SouthROC utilised methodologies that derived from an expert panel based approach. The overall results attained an intermediate level of functionality which amounted to related concerns of economic progress and lack of social awareness. Within the region, a solid basis for future testing by way of measured changes and developed trends can be established. In this regard as management tool, the ISF record offers support for regional sustainability practice and decision making alike. This research adaptively analyses sustainability – a concept that is lacking throughout much of the academic literature and any reciprocal experimentation. This lack of knowledge base has been the emphasis of where future sustainability research can grow from and prove useful in rapidly growing regions. It is the intentions of this research to help further develop the notions of index-based quantitative sustainability.
Abstract: The advances in wireless communication have opened unlimited horizons but there are some challenges as well. The Nature derived air medium between MS (Mobile Station) and BS (Base Station) is beyond human control and produces channel impairment. The impact of the natural conditions at the air medium is the biggest issue in wireless communication. Natural conditions make reliability more cumbersome; here reliability refers to the efficient recovery of the lost or erroneous data. The SR-ARQ (Selective Repeat-Automatic Repeat Request) protocol is a de facto standard for any wireless technology at the air interface with its standard reliability features. Our focus in this research is on the reliability of the control or feedback signal of the SR-ARQ protocol. The proposed mechanism, RSR-ARQ (Reliable SR-ARQ) is an enhancement of the SR-ARQ protocol that has ensured the reliability of the control signals through channel impairment sensitive mechanism. We have modeled the system under two-state discrete time Markov Channel. The simulation results demonstrate the better recovery of the lost or erroneous data that will increase the overall system performance.
Abstract: Medical imaging uses the advantage of digital
technology in imaging and teleradiology. In teleradiology systems
large amount of data is acquired, stored and transmitted. A major
technology that may help to solve the problems associated with the
massive data storage and data transfer capacity is data compression
and decompression. There are many methods of image compression
available. They are classified as lossless and lossy compression
methods. In lossy compression method the decompressed image
contains some distortion. Fractal image compression (FIC) is a lossy
compression method. In fractal image compression an image is
coded as a set of contractive transformations in a complete metric
space. The set of contractive transformations is guaranteed to
produce an approximation to the original image. In this paper FIC is
achieved by PIFS using quadtree partitioning. PIFS is applied on
different images like , Ultrasound, CT Scan, Angiogram, X-ray,
Mammograms. In each modality approximately twenty images are
considered and the average values of compression ratio and PSNR
values are arrived. In this method of fractal encoding, the
parameter, tolerance factor Tmax, is varied from 1 to 10, keeping the
other standard parameters constant. For all modalities of images the
compression ratio and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) are
computed and studied. The quality of the decompressed image is
arrived by PSNR values. From the results it is observed that the
compression ratio increases with the tolerance factor and
mammogram has the highest compression ratio. The quality of the
image is not degraded upto an optimum value of tolerance factor,
Tmax, equal to 8, because of the properties of fractal compression.
Abstract: Drying characteristics of rough rice (variety of lenjan) with an initial moisture content of 25% dry basis (db) was studied in a hot air dryer assisted by infrared heating. Three arrival air temperatures (30, 40 and 500C) and four infrared radiation intensities (0, 0.2 , 0.4 and 0.6 W/cm2) and three arrival air speeds (0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 m.s-1) were studied. Bending strength of brown rice kernel, percentage of cracked kernels and time of drying were measured and evaluated. The results showed that increasing the drying arrival air temperature and radiation intensity of infrared resulted decrease in drying time. High bending strength and low percentage of cracked kernel was obtained when paddy was dried by hot air assisted infrared dryer. Between this factors and their interactive effect were a significant difference (p
Abstract: Hydrogen that used as fuel in fuel cell vehicles can be
produced from renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydro
technologies. PV-electrolyzer is one of the promising methods to
produce hydrogen with zero pollution emission. Hydrogen
production from a PV-electrolyzer system depends on the efficiency
of the electrolyzer and photovoltaic array, and sun irradiance at that
site. In this study, the amount of hydrogen is obtained using
mathematical equations for difference driving distance and sun peak
hours. The results show that the minimum of 99 PV modules are used
to generate 1.75 kgH2 per day for two vehicles.
Abstract: Today-s manufacturing companies are facing multiple and dynamic customer-supplier-relationships embedded in nonhierarchical production networks. This complex environment leads to problems with delivery reliability and wasteful turbulences throughout the entire network. This paper describes an operational model based on a theoretical framework which improves delivery reliability of each individual customer-supplier-relationship within non-hierarchical production networks of the European machinery and equipment industry. By developing a non-centralized coordination mechanism based on determining the value of delivery reliability and derivation of an incentive system for suppliers the number of in time deliveries can be increased and thus the turbulences in the production network smoothened. Comparable to an electronic stock exchange the coordination mechanism will transform the manual and nontransparent process of determining penalties for delivery delays into an automated and transparent market mechanism creating delivery reliability.
Abstract: Organizational innovation favors technological
innovation, but does it also influence technological innovation
persistence? This article investigates empirically the pattern of
technological innovation persistence and tests the potential impact of
organizational innovation using firm-level data from three waves of
the French Community Innovation Surveys. Evidence shows a
positive effect of organizational innovation on technological
innovation persistence, according to various measures of
organizational innovation. Moreover, this impact is more significant
for complex innovators (i.e., those who innovate in both products and
processes). These results highlight the complexity of managing
organizational practices with regard to the firm-s technological
innovation. They also add to comprehension of the drivers of
innovation persistence, through a focus on an often forgotten
dimension of innovation in a broader sense.
Abstract: Most high-performance ac drives utilize a current
controller. The controller switches a voltage source inverter (VSI)
such that the motor current follows a set of reference current
waveforms. Fixed-band hysteresis (FBH) current control has been
widely used for the PWM inverter. We want to apply the same
controller for the PWM AC chopper. The aims of the controller is to
optimize the harmonic content at both input and output sides, while
maintaining acceptable losses in the ac chopper and to control in
wide range the fundamental output voltage. Fixed band controller has
been simulated and analyzed for a single-phase AC chopper and are
easily extended to three-phase systems. Simulation confirmed the
advantages and the excellent performance of the modulation method
applied for the AC chopper.
Abstract: Equilibrium and stability equations of a thin rectangular plate with length a, width b, and thickness h(x)=C1x+C2, made of functionally graded materials under thermal loads are derived based on the first order shear deformation theory. It is assumed that the material properties vary as a power form of thickness coordinate variable z. The derived equilibrium and buckling equations are then solved analytically for a plate with simply supported boundary conditions. One type of thermal loading, uniform temperature rise and gradient through the thickness are considered, and the buckling temperatures are derived. The influences of the plate aspect ratio, the relative thickness, the gradient index and the transverse shear on buckling temperature difference are all discussed.
Abstract: This paper considers the autonomous navigation
problem of multiple n-link nonholonomic mobile manipulators within
an obstacle-ridden environment. We present a set of nonlinear
acceleration controllers, derived from the Lyapunov-based control
scheme, which generates collision-free trajectories of the mobile
manipulators from initial configurations to final configurations in a
constrained environment cluttered with stationary solid objects of
different shapes and sizes. We demonstrate the efficiency of the
control scheme and the resulting acceleration controllers of the
mobile manipulators with results through computer simulations of an
interesting scenario.
Abstract: There are many automotive accidents due to blind spots and driver inattentiveness. Blind spot is the area that is invisible to the driver's viewpoint without head rotation. Several methods are available for assisting the drivers. Simplest methods are — rear mirrors and wide-angle lenses. But, these methods have a disadvantage of the requirement for human assistance. So, the accuracy of these devices depends on driver. Another approach called an automated approach that makes use of sensors such as sonar or radar. These sensors are used to gather range information. The range information will be processed and used for detecting the collision. The disadvantage of this system is — low angular resolution and limited sensing volumes. This paper is a panoramic sensor based automotive vehicle monitoring..
Abstract: Few decades ago, electronic and sensor technologies
are merged into vehicles as the Advanced Driver Assistance
System(ADAS). However, sensor-based ADASs have limitations
about weather interference and a line-of-sight nature problem. In our
project, we investigate a Relative Position based ADAS(RP-ADAS).
We divide the RP-ADAS into four main research areas: GNSS,
VANET, Security/Privacy, and Application. In this paper, we research
the GNSS technologies and determine the most appropriate one. With
the performance evaluation, we figure out that the C/A code based
GPS technologies are inappropriate for 'which lane-level' application.
However, they can be used as a 'which road-level' application.
Abstract: This study was conducted published to investigate
there liability of the equation pressure-impulse (PI) reinforced
concrete column inprevious studies. Equation involves three different
levels of damage criteria known as D =0. 2, D =0. 5 and D =0. 8.The
damage criteria known as a minor when 0-0.2, 0.2-0.5is known as
moderate damage, high damage known as 0.5-0.8, and 0.8-1 of the
structure is considered a failure. In this study, two types of reliability
analyzes conducted. First, using pressure-impulse equation with
different parameters. The parameters involved are the concrete
strength, depth, width, and height column, the ratio of longitudinal
reinforcement and transverse reinforcement ratio. In the first analysis
of the reliability of this new equation is derived to improve the
previous equations. The second reliability analysis involves three
types of columns used to derive the PI curve diagram using the
derived equation to compare with the equation derived from other
researchers and graph minimum standoff versus weapon yield
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The results
showed that the derived equation is more accurate with FEMA
standards than previous researchers.
Abstract: There are only limited studies that directly correlate
the increase in reinforced concrete (RC) panel structural capacities in
resisting the blast loads with different RC panel structural properties
in terms of blast loading characteristics, RC panel dimensions, steel
reinforcement ratio and concrete material strength. In this paper,
numerical analyses of dynamic response and damage of the one-way
RC panel to blast loads are carried out using the commercial software
LS-DYNA. A series of simulations are performed to predict the blast
response and damage of columns with different level and magnitude
of blast loads. The numerical results are used to develop pressureimpulse
(P-I) diagrams of one-way RC panels. Based on the
numerical results, the empirical formulae are derived to calculate the
pressure and impulse asymptotes of the P-I diagrams of RC panels.
The results presented in this paper can be used to construct P-I
diagrams of RC panels with different concrete and reinforcement
properties. The P-I diagrams are very useful to assess panel capacities
in resisting different blast loads.
Abstract: With increasing utilization of the wireless devices in
different fields such as medical devices and industrial fields, the
paper presents a method for simplify the Bluetooth packets with
throughput enhancing. The paper studies a vital issue in wireless
communications, which is the throughput of data over wireless
networks. In fact, the Bluetooth and ZigBee are a Wireless Personal
Area Network (WPAN). With taking these two systems competition
consideration, the paper proposes different schemes for improve the
throughput of Bluetooth network over a reliable channel. The
proposition depends on the Channel Quality Driven Data Rate
(CQDDR) rules, which determines the suitable packet in the
transmission process according to the channel conditions. The
proposed packet is studied over additive White Gaussian Noise
(AWGN) and fading channels. The Experimental results reveal the
capability of extension of the PL length by 8, 16, 24 bytes for classic
and EDR packets, respectively. Also, the proposed method is suitable
for the low throughput Bluetooth.
Abstract: The Internet has become an indispensable part of our lives. Witnessing recent web-based mass collaboration, e.g. Wikipedia, people are questioning whether the Internet has made fundamental changes to the society or whether it is merely a hyperbolic fad. It has long been assumed that collective action for a certain goal yields the problem of free-riding, due to its non-exclusive and non-rival characteristics. Then, thanks to recent technological advances, the on-line space experienced the following changes that enabled it to produce public goods: 1) decrease in the cost of production or coordination 2) externality from networked structure 3) production function which integrates both self-interest and altruism. However, this research doubts the homogeneity of on-line mass collaboration and argues that a more sophisticated and systematical approach is required. The alternative that we suggest is to connect the characteristics of the goal to the motivation. Despite various approaches, previous literature fails to recognize that motivation can be structurally restricted by the characteristic of the goal. First we draw a typology of on-line mass collaboration with 'the extent of expected beneficiary' and 'the existence of externality', and then we examine each combination of motivation using Benkler-s framework. Finally, we explore and connect such typology with its possible dominant participating motivation.
Abstract: Multi-loop (De-centralized) Proportional-Integral-
Derivative (PID) controllers have been used extensively in process
industries due to their simple structure for control of multivariable
processes. The objective of this work is to design multiple-model
adaptive multi-loop PID strategy (Multiple Model Adaptive-PID)
and neural network based multi-loop PID strategy (Neural Net
Adaptive-PID) for the control of multivariable system. The first
method combines the output of multiple linear PID controllers,
each describing process dynamics at a specific level of operation.
The global output is an interpolation of the individual multi-loop
PID controller outputs weighted based on the current value of the
measured process variable. In the second method, neural network
is used to calculate the PID controller parameters based on the
scheduling variable that corresponds to major shift in the process
dynamics. The proposed control schemes are simple in structure with
less computational complexity. The effectiveness of the proposed
control schemes have been demonstrated on the CSTR process,
which exhibits dynamic non-linearity.
Abstract: Drought is a phenomenon caused by
environmental and climatic changes. This phenomenon is
affected by shortage of rainfall and temperature. Dust is one
of important environmental problems caused by climate
change and drought. With recent multi-year drought, many
environmental crises caused by dust in Iran and Middle East.
Dust in the vast areas of the provinces occurs with high
frequency. By dust affecting many problems created in terms
of health, social and economic. In this study, we tried to study
the most important factors causing dust. In this way we have
used the satellite images and meteorological data. Finally,
strategies to deal with the dust will be mentioned.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the study of mineralogy
and engineering characteristics of soil materials derived from the
eastern part of Nile Delta. The clay minerals of the studied soil by
using X- ray diffraction are mainly illite (average 72.6 %) and
kaolinite (average 2.6 %), expandable portion in illite-smectite mixed
layer (average 7 %). Smectite is more abundant in fluviatile clays,
whereas kaolinite is more abundant in lagoonal clays. On the other
hand, illite and illite-smectite are more abundant in marine clays. The
geotechnical results show that the soil under study consists mainly of
about 0.3 % gravel, 5 % sand, 51.5 % silt and 42.2 % clay in average.
The average shrinkage limit attains 11 % whereas the average value
of the plasticity index is 23.4 %. The free swelling ranges from 40 %
to 75 % and has a value of 55 % giving an indication about the
inadequacy of such soil under foundations.
From a construction point of view, the soil under investigation
poses many problems even under light foundations due to the
swelling and shrinkage. Such swelling and shrinkage is due to the
high content of soil materials in the expandable clay minerals of illite
and smectite. Based on the results of the present and earlier studies,
trial application of soil stabilisation is recommended.
Abstract: Authentication of multimedia contents has gained much attention in recent times. In this paper, we propose a secure semi-fragile watermarking, with a choice of two watermarks to be embedded. This technique operates in integer wavelet domain and makes use of semi fragile watermarks for achieving better robustness. A self-recovering algorithm is employed, that hides the image digest into some Wavelet subbands to detect possible malevolent object manipulation undergone by the image (object replacing and/or deletion). The Semi-fragility makes the scheme tolerant for JPEG lossy compression as low as quality of 70%, and locate the tempered area accurately. In addition, the system ensures more security because the embedded watermarks are protected with private keys. The computational complexity is reduced using parameterized integer wavelet transform. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme guarantees the safety of watermark, image recovery and location of the tempered area accurately.
