Abstract: The aim of this investigation was to validate the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model of type B aortic dissection with our experimental results from a bench-top-model. Another objective was to study the relationship between the size of a septectomy that increases the outflow of the false lumen and its effect on the values of the differential of pressure between true lumen and false lumen. FSI analysis based on Galerkin’s formulation was used in this investigation to study flow pattern and hemodynamics within a flexible type B aortic dissection model using boundary conditions from our experimental data. The numerical results of our model were verified against the experimental data for various tear size and location. Thus, CFD tools have a potential role in evaluating different scenarios and aortic dissection configurations.
Abstract: The behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members is quite important in RC structures. When evaluating the performance of structures, the nonlinear properties are defined according to the cross sectional behavior of RC members. To be able to determine the behavior of RC members, its cross sectional behavior should be known well. The moment-curvature (MC) relationship is used to represent cross sectional behavior. The MC relationship of RC cross section can be best determined both experimentally and numerically. But, experimental study on RC members is very difficult. The aim of the study is to obtain the MC relationship of RC shear walls. Additionally, it is aimed to determine the parameters which affect MC relationship. While obtaining MC relationship of RC members, XTRACT which can represent robustly the MC relationship is used. Concrete quality, longitudinal and transverse reinforcing ratios, are selected as parameters which affect MC relationship. As a result of the study, curvature ductility and effective flexural stiffness are determined using this parameter. Effective flexural stiffness is compared with the values defined in design codes.
Abstract: In this paper, a coupled damage effect in the
instability of a composite rotor is presented, under dynamic loading
response in the harmonic analysis condition. The analysis of the
stress which operates the rotor is done. Calculations of different
energies and the virtual work of the aerodynamic loads from the rotor
blade are developed. The use of the composite material for the rotor
offers a good stability.
Numerical calculations on the model developed prove that the
damage effect has a negative effect on the stability of the rotor.
The study of the composite rotor in transient system allowed
determining the vibratory responses due to various excitations.
Abstract: The electrokinetic flow resistance (electroviscous
effect) is predicted for steady state, pressure-driven liquid flow at
low Reynolds number in a microfluidic contraction of rectangular
cross-section. Calculations of the three dimensional flow are
performed in parallel using a finite volume numerical method. The
channel walls are assumed to carry a uniform charge density and the
liquid is taken to be a symmetric 1:1 electrolyte. Predictions are
presented for a single set of flow and electrokinetic parameters. It is
shown that the magnitude of the streaming potential gradient and the
charge density of counter-ions in the liquid is greater than that in
corresponding two-dimensional slit-like contraction geometry. The
apparent viscosity is found to be very close to the value for a
rectangular channel of uniform cross-section at the chosen Reynolds
number (Re = 0.1). It is speculated that the apparent viscosity for the
contraction geometry will increase as the Reynolds number is
reduced.
Abstract: There are many situations where input feature vectors are incomplete and methods to tackle the problem have been studied for a long time. A commonly used procedure is to replace each missing value with an imputation. This paper presents a method to perform categorical missing data imputation from numerical and categorical variables. The imputations are based on Simpson-s fuzzy min-max neural networks where the input variables for learning and classification are just numerical. The proposed method extends the input to categorical variables by introducing new fuzzy sets, a new operation and a new architecture. The procedure is tested and compared with others using opinion poll data.
Abstract: There are only limited studies that directly correlate
the increase in reinforced concrete (RC) panel structural capacities in
resisting the blast loads with different RC panel structural properties
in terms of blast loading characteristics, RC panel dimensions, steel
reinforcement ratio and concrete material strength. In this paper,
numerical analyses of dynamic response and damage of the one-way
RC panel to blast loads are carried out using the commercial software
LS-DYNA. A series of simulations are performed to predict the blast
response and damage of columns with different level and magnitude
of blast loads. The numerical results are used to develop pressureimpulse
(P-I) diagrams of one-way RC panels. Based on the
numerical results, the empirical formulae are derived to calculate the
pressure and impulse asymptotes of the P-I diagrams of RC panels.
The results presented in this paper can be used to construct P-I
diagrams of RC panels with different concrete and reinforcement
properties. The P-I diagrams are very useful to assess panel capacities
in resisting different blast loads.
