Abstract: In this study, a fuzzy integrated logical forecasting method (FILF) is extended for multi-variate systems by using a vector autoregressive model. Fuzzy time series forecasting (FTSF) method was recently introduced by Song and Chissom [1]-[2] after that Chen improved the FTSF method. Rather than the existing literature, the proposed model is not only compared with the previous FTS models, but also with the conventional time series methods such as the classical vector autoregressive model. The cluster optimization is based on the C-means clustering method. An empirical study is performed for the prediction of the chartering rates of a group of dry bulk cargo ships. The root mean squared error (RMSE) metric is used for the comparing of results of methods and the proposed method has superiority than both traditional FTS methods and also the classical time series methods.
Abstract: In this paper we have numerically analyzed terahertzrange
wavelength conversion using nondegenerate four wave mixing
(NDFWM) in a SOA integrated DFB laser (experiments reported
both in MIT electronics and Fujitsu research laboratories). For
analyzing semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), we use finitedifference
beam propagation method (FDBPM) based on modified
nonlinear SchrÖdinger equation and for distributed feedback (DFB)
laser we use coupled wave approach. We investigated wavelength
conversion up to 4THz probe-pump detuning with conversion
efficiency -5dB in 1THz probe-pump detuning for a SOA integrated
quantum-well
Abstract: To reveal the temperature field distribution of disc
brake in downward belt conveyor, mathematical models of heat
transfer for disc brake were established combined with heat transfer
theory. Then, the simulation process was stated in detail and the
temperature field of disc brake under conditions of dynamic speed and
dynamic braking torque was numerically simulated by using ANSYS
software. Finally the distribution and variation laws of temperature
field in the braking process were analyzed. Results indicate that the
maximum surface temperature occurs at a time before the brake end
and there exist large temperature gradients in both radial and axial
directions, while it is relatively small in the circumferential direction.
Abstract: The performance of high-resolution schemes is investigated for unsteady, inviscid and compressible multiphase flows. An Eulerian diffuse interface approach has been chosen for the simulation of multicomponent flow problems. The reduced fiveequation and seven equation models are used with HLL and HLLC approximation. The authors demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of both seven equations and five equations models studying their performance with HLL and HLLC algorithms on simple test case. The seven equation model is based on two pressure, two velocity concept of Baer–Nunziato [10], while five equation model is based on the mixture velocity and pressure. The numerical evaluations of two variants of Riemann solvers have been conducted for the classical one-dimensional air-water shock tube and compared with analytical solution for error analysis.
Abstract: The switching lag-time and the voltage drop across
the power devices cause serious waveform distortions and
fundamental voltage drop in pulse width-modulated inverter output.
These phenomenons are conspicuous when both the output frequency
and voltage are low. To estimate the output voltage from the PWM
reference signal it is essential to take account of these imperfections
and to correct them. In this paper, on-line compensation method is
presented. It needs three simple blocs to add at the ideal reference
voltages. This method does not require any additional hardware
circuit and off- line experimental measurement. The paper includes
experimental results to demonstrate the validity of the proposed
method. It is applied, finally, in case of indirect vector controlled
induction machine and implemented using dSpace card.
Abstract: Group contribution methods such as the UNIFAC are
very useful to researchers and engineers involved in synthesis,
feasibility studies, design and optimization of separation processes.
They can be applied successfully to predict phase equilibrium and
excess properties in the development of chemical and separation
processes. The main focus of this work was to investigate the
possibility of absorbing selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using three selected UNIFAC
group contribution methods. Absorption followed by subsequent
stripping is the predominant available abatement technology of
VOCs from flue gases prior to their release into the atmosphere. The
original, modified and effective UNIFAC models were used in this
work. The thirteen selected VOCs that have been considered in this
research are: pentane, hexane, heptanes, trimethylamine, toluene,
xylene, cyclohexane, butyl acetate, diethyl acetate, chloroform,
acetone, ethyl methyl ketone and isobutyl methyl ketone. The
computation was done for solute VOC concentration of 8.55x10-8
which is well in the infinite dilution region. The results obtained in
this study compare very well with those published in literature
obtained through both measurements and predictions. The phase
equilibrium obtained in this study show that PDMS is a good
absorbent for the removal of VOCs from contaminated air streams
through physical absorption.
Abstract: Human heart valves diseased by congenital heart
defects, rheumatic fever, bacterial infection, cancer may cause stenosis
or insufficiency in the valves. Treatment may be with medication but
often involves valve repair or replacement (insertion of an artificial
heart valve). Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHVs) are widely
implanted to replace the diseased heart valves, but still suffer from
complications such as hemolysis, platelet activation, tissue
overgrowth and device failure. These complications are closely related
to both flow characteristics through the valves and leaflet dynamics. In
this study, the physiological flow interacting with the moving leaflets
in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) is simulated with a
strongly coupled implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method
which is newly organized based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian
(ALE) approach and the dynamic mesh method (remeshing) of
FLUENT. The simulated results are in good agreement with previous
experimental studies. This study shows the applicability of the present
FSI model to the complicated physics interacting between fluid flow
and moving boundary.
Abstract: We present a BeeBot, Binus Multi-client Intelligent Telepresence Robot, a custom-build robot system specifically designed for teleconference with multiple person using omni directional actuator. The robot is controlled using a computer networks, so the manager/supervisor can direct the robot to the intended person to start a discussion/inspection. People tracking and autonomous navigation are intelligent features of this robot. We build a web application for controlling the multi-client telepresence robot and open-source teleconference system used. Experimental result presented and we evaluated its performance.
Abstract: It has been defined that the “network is the system".
This implies providing levels of service, reliability, predictability and
availability that are commensurate with or better than those that
individual computers provide today. To provide this requires
integrated network management for interconnected networks of
heterogeneous devices covering both the local campus. In this paper
we are addressing a framework to effectively deal with this issue. It
consists of components and interactions between them which are
required to perform the service fault management. A real-world
scenario is used to derive the requirements which have been applied
to the component identification. An analysis of existing frameworks
and approaches with respect to their applicability to the framework is
also carried out.
Abstract: This paper aimed to study the factors that relate to
working behavior of employees at Pakkred Municipality, Nonthaburi
Province. A questionnaire was utilized as the tool in collecting
information. Descriptive statistics included frequency, percentage,
mean and standard deviation. Independent- sample t- test, analysis of
variance and Pearson Correlation were also used. The findings of this
research revealed that the majority of the respondents were female,
between 25- 35 years old, married, with a Bachelor degree. The
average monthly salary of respondents was between 8,001- 12,000
Baht, and having about 4-7 years of working experience. Regarding
the overall working motivation factors, the findings showed that
interrelationship, respect, and acceptance were ranked as highly
important factors, whereas motivation, remunerations & welfare,
career growth, and working conditions were ranked as moderately
important factors. Also, overall working behavior was ranked as high.
The hypotheses testing revealed that different genders had a
different working behavior and had a different way of working as a
team, which was significant at the 0.05 confidence level, Moreover,
there was a difference among employees with different monthly
salary in working behavior, problem- solving and decision making,
which all were significant at the 0.05 confidence level. Employees
with different years of working experience were found to have work
working behavior both individual and as a team at the statistical
significance level of 0.01 and 0.05. The result of testing the
relationship between motivation in overall working revealed that
interrelationship, respect and acceptance from others, career growth,
and working conditions related to working behavior at a moderate
level, while motivation in performing duties and remunerations and
welfares related to working behavior towards the same direction at a
low level, with a statistical significance of 0.01.
Abstract: In this paper, the effect of receive and/or transmit
antenna spacing on the performance (BER vs. SNR) of multipleantenna
systems is determined by using an RCS (Radar Cross
Section) channel model. In this physical model, the scatterers
existing in the propagation environment are modeled by their RCS so
that the correlation of the receive signal complex amplitudes, i.e.,
both magnitude and phase, can be estimated. The proposed RCS
channel model is then compared with classical models.
Abstract: This paper presents a new problem solving approach
that is able to generate optimal policy solution for finite-state
stochastic sequential decision-making problems with high data
efficiency. The proposed algorithm iteratively builds and improves
an approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) model along with
cost-to-go value approximates by generating finite length trajectories
through the state-space. The approach creates a synergy between an
approximate evolving model and approximate cost-to-go values to
produce a sequence of improving policies finally converging to the
optimal policy through an intelligent and structured search of the
policy space. The approach modifies the policy update step of the
policy iteration so as to result in a speedy and stable convergence to
the optimal policy. We apply the algorithm to a non-holonomic
mobile robot control problem and compare its performance with
other Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches, e.g., a) Q-learning,
b) Watkins Q(λ), c) SARSA(λ).
Abstract: A continuum model is presented to study vdW
interaction on buckling analysis of multi-walled walled carbon
nanotube. In previous studies, only the vdW interaction between
adjacent two layers was considered and the vdW interaction between
the other two layers was neglected. The results show that the vdW
interaction cofficients are dependent on the change of interlayer
spacing and the radii of tubes. With increase of radii the vdW
coefficients approach a constant value. The numerical results show
that the effect of vdW interaction on the critical strain for a doublewalled
CNT is negligible when the radius is large enough for the
both the cases of before and after buckling.
Abstract: An attempt has been made to investigate the
machinability of zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) inserts while
turning AISI 4340 steel. The insert was prepared by powder
metallurgy process route and the machining experiments were
performed based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) design
called Central Composite Design (CCD). The mathematical model of
flank wear, cutting force and surface roughness have been developed
using second order regression analysis. The adequacy of model has
been carried out based on Analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques.
It can be concluded that cutting speed and feed rate are the two most
influential factor for flank wear and cutting force prediction. For
surface roughness determination, the cutting speed & depth of cut
both have significant contribution. Key parameters effect on each
response has also been presented in graphical contours for choosing
the operating parameter preciously. 83% desirability level has been
achieved using this optimized condition.
Abstract: In this paper, the periodic surveillance scheme has
been proposed for any convex region using mobile wireless sensor
nodes. A sensor network typically consists of fixed number of
sensor nodes which report the measurements of sensed data such as
temperature, pressure, humidity, etc., of its immediate proximity
(the area within its sensing range). For the purpose of sensing an
area of interest, there are adequate number of fixed sensor
nodes required to cover the entire region of interest. It implies
that the number of fixed sensor nodes required to cover a given
area will depend on the sensing range of the sensor as well as
deployment strategies employed. It is assumed that the sensors to
be mobile within the region of surveillance, can be mounted on
moving bodies like robots or vehicle. Therefore, in our
scheme, the surveillance time period determines the number of
sensor nodes required to be deployed in the region of interest.
The proposed scheme comprises of three algorithms namely:
Hexagonalization, Clustering, and Scheduling, The first algorithm
partitions the coverage area into fixed sized hexagons that
approximate the sensing range (cell) of individual sensor node.
The clustering algorithm groups the cells into clusters, each of
which will be covered by a single sensor node. The later
determines a schedule for each sensor to serve its respective cluster.
Each sensor node traverses all the cells belonging to the cluster
assigned to it by oscillating between the first and the last cell for
the duration of its life time. Simulation results show that our
scheme provides full coverage within a given period of time using
few sensors with minimum movement, less power consumption,
and relatively less infrastructure cost.
Abstract: Mixed convection in two-dimensional shallow rectangular enclosure is considered. The top hot wall moves with constant velocity while the cold bottom wall has no motion. Simulations are performed for Richardson number ranging from Ri = 0.001 to 100 and for Reynolds number keeping fixed at Re = 408.21. Under these conditions cavity encompasses three regimes: dominating forced, mixed and free convection flow. The Prandtl number is set to 6 and the effects of cavity inclination on the flow and heat transfer are studied for different Richardson number. With increasing the inclination angle, interesting behavior of the flow and thermal fields are observed. The streamlines and isotherm plots and the variation of the Nusselt numbers on the hot wall are presented. The average Nusselt number is found to increase with cavity inclination for Ri ³ 1 . Also it is shown that the average Nusselt number changes mildly with the cavity inclination in the dominant forced convection regime but it increases considerably in the regime with dominant natural convection.
Abstract: In this paper, an automatic detecting algorithm for
QRS complex detecting was applied for analyzing ECG recordings
and five criteria for dangerous arrhythmia diagnosing are applied for a
protocol type of automatic arrhythmia diagnosing system. The
automatic detecting algorithm applied in this paper detected the
distribution of QRS complexes in ECG recordings and related
information, such as heart rate and RR interval. In this investigation,
twenty sampled ECG recordings of patients with different pathologic
conditions were collected for off-line analysis. A combinative
application of four digital filters for bettering ECG signals and
promoting detecting rate for QRS complex was proposed as
pre-processing. Both of hardware filters and digital filters were
applied to eliminate different types of noises mixed with ECG
recordings. Then, an automatic detecting algorithm of QRS complex
was applied for verifying the distribution of QRS complex. Finally,
the quantitative clinic criteria for diagnosing arrhythmia were
programmed in a practical application for automatic arrhythmia
diagnosing as a post-processor. The results of diagnoses by automatic
dangerous arrhythmia diagnosing were compared with the results of
off-line diagnoses by experienced clinic physicians. The results of
comparison showed the application of automatic dangerous
arrhythmia diagnosis performed a matching rate of 95% compared
with an experienced physician-s diagnoses.
Abstract: The objective of current study is to investigate the
differences of winning and losing teams in terms of goal scoring and
passing sequences. Total of 31 matches from UEFA-EURO 2012
were analyzed and 5 matches were excluded from analysis due to
matches end up drawn. There are two groups of variable used in the
study which is; i. the goal scoring variable and: ii. passing sequences
variable. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon matched pair rank test
with significant value set at p < 0.05. Current study found the timing
of goal scored was significantly higher for winning team at 1st half
(Z=-3.416, p=.001) and 2nd half (Z=-3.252, p=.001). The scoring
frequency was also found to be increase as time progressed and the
last 15 minutes of the game was the time interval the most goals
scored. The indicators that were significantly differences between
winning and losing team were the goal scored (Z=-4.578, p=.000),
the head (Z=-2.500, p=.012), the right foot (Z=-3.788,p=.000),
corner (Z=-.2.126,p=.033), open play (Z=-3.744,p=.000), inside the
penalty box (Z=-4.174, p=.000) , attackers (Z=-2.976, p=.003) and
also the midfielders (Z=-3.400, p=.001). Regarding the passing
sequences, there are significance difference between both teams in
short passing sequences (Z=-.4.141, p=.000). While for the long
passing, there were no significance difference (Z=-.1.795, p=.073).
The data gathered in present study can be used by the coaches to
construct detailed training program based on their objectives.
Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any existing
network infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the
limited transmission range of wireless network interfaces, multiple
"hops" may be needed to exchange data across the network. In order
to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is
used to discover routes between nodes. The primary goal of such an
ad hoc network routing protocol is correct and efficient route
establishment between a pair of nodes so that messages may be
delivered in a timely manner. Route construction should be done
with a minimum of overhead and bandwidth consumption. This paper
examines two routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks– the
Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), the table- driven
protocol and the Ad hoc On- Demand Distance Vector routing
(AODV), an On –Demand protocol and evaluates both protocols
based on packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load, average
delay and throughput while varying number of nodes, speed and
pause time.
Abstract: This paper deals with the design of a periodic output
feedback controller for a flexible beam structure modeled with
Timoshenko beam theory, Finite Element Method, State space
methods and embedded piezoelectrics concept. The first 3 modes are
considered in modeling the beam. The main objective of this work is
to control the vibrations of the beam when subjected to an external
force. Shear piezoelectric sensors and actuators are embedded into
the top and bottom layers of a flexible aluminum beam structure, thus
making it intelligent and self-adaptive. The composite beam is
divided into 5 finite elements and the control actuator is placed at
finite element position 1, whereas the sensor is varied from position 2
to 5, i.e., from the nearby fixed end to the free end. 4 state space
SISO models are thus developed. Periodic Output Feedback (POF)
Controllers are designed for the 4 SISO models of the same plant to
control the flexural vibrations. The effect of placing the sensor at
different locations on the beam is observed and the performance of
the controller is evaluated for vibration control. Conclusions are
finally drawn.
