Abstract: Surface currents play a major role in the distribution
of contaminants, the connectivity of marine populations, and can
influence the vertical and horizontal distribution of nutrients within
the water column. This paper aims to determine the effects of sea
breeze-wind patterns on the climatology of the surface currents on the
continental shelf surrounding Rottnest Island, WA Australia. The
alternating wind patterns allow for full cyclic rotations of wind
direction, permitting the interpretation of the effect of the wind on the
surface currents. It was found that the surface currents only clearly
follow the northbound Capes Current in times when the Fremantle
Doctor sets in. Surface currents react within an hour to a change of
direction of the wind, allowing southerly currents to dominate during
strong northerly sea breezes, often followed by mixed currents
dominated by eddies in the inter-lying times.
Abstract: Extensive rainfall disaggregation approaches have been developed and applied in climate change impact studies such as flood risk assessment and urban storm water management. In this study, five rainfall models that were capable ofdisaggregating daily rainfall data into hourly one were investigated for the rainfall record in theChangi Airport, Singapore. The objectives of this study were (i) to study the temporal characteristics of hourly rainfall in Singapore, and (ii) to evaluate the performance of variousdisaggregation models. The used models included: (i) Rectangular pulse Poisson model (RPPM), (ii) Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular pulse model (BLRPM), (iii) Bartlett-Lewis model with 2 cell types (BL2C), (iv) Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular with cell depth distribution dependent on duration (BLRD), and (v) Neyman-Scott Rectangular pulse model (NSRPM). All of these models werefitted using hourly rainfall data ranging from 1980 to 2005 (which was obtained from Changimeteorological station). The study results indicated that the weight scheme of inversely proportional variance could deliver more accurateoutputs for fitting rainfall patterns in tropical areas, and BLRPM performedrelatively better than other disaggregation models.
Abstract: Learning programming is difficult for many learners. Some researches have found that the main difficulty relates to cognitive load. Cognitive overload happens in programming due to the nature of the subject which is intrinisicly over-bearing on the working memory. It happens due to the complexity of the subject itself. The problem is made worse by the poor instructional design methodology used in the teaching and learning process. Various efforts have been proposed to reduce the cognitive load, e.g. visualization softwares, part-program method etc. Use of many computer based systems have also been tried to tackle the problem. However, little success has been made to alleviate the problem. More has to be done to overcome this hurdle. This research attempts at understanding how cognitive load can be managed so as to reduce the problem of overloading. We propose a mechanism to measure the cognitive load during pre instruction, post instruction and in instructional stages of learning. This mechanism is used to help the instruction. As the load changes the instruction is made to adapt itself to ensure cognitive viability. This mechanism could be incorporated as a sub domain in the student model of various computer based instructional systems to facilitate the learning of programming.
Abstract: Speeded-Up Robust Feature (SURF) is commonly used for feature matching in stereovision because of their robustness towards scale changes and rotational changes. However, SURF feature cannot cope with large viewpoint changes or skew distortion. This paper introduces a method which can help to improve the wide baseline-s matching performance in term of accuracy by rectifying the image using two vanishing points. Simplified orientation correction was used to remove the false matching..
Abstract: In this research, the flow pattern influence on
performance of a micro PEMFC was investigated
experimentally. The investigation focused on the impacts of
bend angels and rib/channel dimensions of serpentine flow
channel pattern on the performance and investigated how they
improve the performance. The fuel cell employed for these
experiments was a micro single PEMFC with a membrane of
1.44 cm2 Nafion NRE-212. The results show that 60° and 120°
bend angles can provide the better performances at 20 and 40
sccm inlet flow rates comparing to that the conventional design.
Additionally, wider channel with narrower rib spacing gives
better performance. These results may be applied to develop
universal heuristics for the design of flow pattern of micro
PEMFC.
Abstract: In this research, we have developed a new efficient
heuristic algorithm for the dynamic facility layout problem with
budget constraint (DFLPB). This heuristic algorithm combines two
mathematical programming methods such as discrete event
simulation and linear integer programming (IP) to obtain a near
optimum solution. In the proposed algorithm, the non-linear model
of the DFLP has been changed to a pure integer programming (PIP)
model. Then, the optimal solution of the PIP model has been used in
a simulation model that has been designed in a similar manner as the
DFLP for determining the probability of assigning a facility to a
location. After a sufficient number of runs, the simulation model
obtains near optimum solutions. Finally, to verify the performance of
the algorithm, several test problems have been solved. The results
show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient in terms of speed
and accuracy than other heuristic algorithms presented in previous
works found in the literature.
Abstract: Computer based geostatistical methods can offer effective data analysis possibilities for agricultural areas by using
vectorial data and their objective informations. These methods will help to detect the spatial changes on different locations of the large
agricultural lands, which will lead to effective fertilization for optimal yield with reduced environmental pollution. In this study, topsoil (0-20 cm) and subsoil (20-40 cm) samples were taken from a
sugar beet field by 20 x 20 m grids. Plant samples were also collected
from the same plots. Some physical and chemical analyses for these
samples were made by routine methods. According to derived variation coefficients, topsoil organic matter (OM) distribution was more than subsoil OM distribution. The highest C.V. value of
17.79% was found for topsoil OM. The data were analyzed
comparatively according to kriging methods which are also used
widely in geostatistic. Several interpolation methods (Ordinary,Simple and Universal) and semivariogram models (Spherical,
Exponential and Gaussian) were tested in order to choose the suitable
methods. Average standard deviations of values estimated by simple
kriging interpolation method were less than average standard
deviations (topsoil OM ± 0.48, N ± 0.37, subsoil OM ± 0.18) of measured values. The most suitable interpolation method was simple
kriging method and exponantial semivariogram model for topsoil,
whereas the best optimal interpolation method was simple kriging
method and spherical semivariogram model for subsoil. The results
also showed that these computer based geostatistical methods should
be tested and calibrated for different experimental conditions and semivariogram models.
Abstract: XML is an important standard of data exchange and
representation. As a mature database system, using relational database
to support XML data may bring some advantages. But storing XML in
relational database has obvious redundancy that wastes disk space,
bandwidth and disk I/O when querying XML data. For the efficiency
of storage and query XML, it is necessary to use compressed XML
data in relational database. In this paper, a compressed relational
database technology supporting XML data is presented. Original
relational storage structure is adaptive to XPath query process. The
compression method keeps this feature. Besides traditional relational
database techniques, additional query process technologies on
compressed relations and for special structure for XML are presented.
In this paper, technologies for XQuery process in compressed
relational database are presented..
Abstract: Ambiguities in effects of earthquake on various
structures in all earthquake codes would necessitate more study and
research concerning influential factors on dynamic behavior.
Previous studies which were done on different features in different
buildings play a major role in the type of response a structure makes
to lateral vibrations. Diagnosing each of these irregularities can help
structure designers in choosing appropriate setbacks for decreasing
possible damages. Therefore vertical setback is one of the irregularity
factors in the height of the building where can be seen in skyscrapers
and hotels. Previous researches reveal notable changes in the place of
these setbacks showing dynamic response of the structure.
Consequently analyzing 48 models of concrete frames for 3, 6 and 9
stories heights with three different bays in general shape of a surface
decline by height have been constructed in ETABS2000 software,
and then the shape effect of each and every one of these frames in
period scale has been discussed. The result of this study reveals that
not only mass, stiffness and height but also shape of the frame is
influential.
Abstract: The role of corporate governance is to reduce the
divergence of interests between shareholders and managers. The role
of corporate governance is more useful when managers have an
incentive to deviate from shareholders- interests. One example of
management-s deviation from shareholders- interests is the
management of earnings through the use of accounting accruals. This
paper examines the association between corporate governance
internal mechanisms ownership concentration, board independence,
the existence of CEO-Chairman duality and earnings management.
Firm size and leverage are control variables. The population used in
this study comprises firms listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange
(TSE) between 2004 and 2008, the sample comprises 196 firms.
Panel Data method is employed as technique to estimate the model.
We find that there is negative significant association between
ownership concentration and board independence manage earnings
with earnings management, there is negative significant association
between the existence of CEO-Chairman duality and earnings
management. This study also found a positive significant association
between control variable (firm size and leverage) and earnings
management.
Abstract: The rate of nitrate adsorption by a nitrate selective ion
exchange resin was investigated in a well-stirred batch experiments.
The kinetic experimental data were simulated with diffusion models including external mass transfer, particle diffusion and chemical
adsorption. Particle pore volume diffusion and particle surface diffusion were taken into consideration separately and simultaneously
in the modeling. The model equations were solved numerically using the Crank-Nicholson scheme. An optimization technique was
employed to optimize the model parameters. All nitrate concentration
decay data were well described with the all diffusion models. The
results indicated that the kinetic process is initially controlled by external mass transfer and then by particle diffusion. The external
mass transfer coefficient and the coefficients of pore volume diffusion and surface diffusion in all experiments were close to each
other with the average value of 8.3×10-3 cm/S for external mass
transfer coefficient. In addition, the models are more sensitive to the
mass transfer coefficient in comparison with particle diffusion. Moreover, it seems that surface diffusion is the dominant particle
diffusion in comparison with pore volume diffusion.

Optical model parameters (OMPs) of α-particles elastic scattering by 9Be at different energies have been obtained. Coupled Reaction Channel (CRC) of elastic scattering, inelastic scattering and transfer reaction has been calculated using Fresco Code. The effect of involving CRC calculations on the analysis of differential cross section has been studied. The transfer reaction of (5He) in the reaction 9Be(α,9Be)α has been studied. The spectroscopic factor of 9Be≡α+5He has been extracted.
Abstract: Based on the thermodynamic theory, the dependence of
sublimation energy of metal on temperature and pressure is discussed,
and the results indicate that the sublimation energy decreases linearly
with the increase of temperature and pressure. Combined with this
result, the blow-off impulse of aluminum induced by pulsed X-ray is
simulated by smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The
numerical results show that, while the change of sublimation energy
with temperature and pressure is considered, the blow-off impulse of
aluminum is larger than the case that the sublimation energy is
assumed to be a constant.
Abstract: Cogeneration may be defined as a system which
contains electricity production and regain of the thermo value of
exhaust gases simultaneously. The examination is based on the data-s
of an active cogeneration plant. This study, it is aimed to determine
which component of the system should be revised first to raise the
efficiency and decrease the loss of exergy. For this purpose, second
law analysis of thermodynamics is applied to each component due to
consider the effects of environmental conditions and take the quality
of energy into consideration as well as the quantity of it. The exergy
balance equations are produced and exergy loss is calculated for each
component. 44,44 % loss of exergy in heat exchanger, 29,59 % in
combustion chamber, 18,68 % in steam boiler, 5,25 % in gas turbine
and 2,03 % in compressor is calculated.
Abstract: Based on the field investigation and long term remote
sensing data, the dynamics of the alpine wetland in the river basin and
their response to climate change were studied. Results showed the
alpine wetlands accounted for 3.73% of total basin in 2010. Lake and
river appeared an increasing trend in the past 30 years, with an
increase of 34.36 % and 24.57%. However, swamp exhibited a
tendency of decreasing with 233.74 km2. Annual average temperature,
maximum temperature, minimum temperature and precipitation in the
river basin all exhibited an increasing trend, whereas relative humidity
exhibited a decreasing trend. Ice and snow melting are main reasons of
lake and river area enhancement and swamp area descend. There
existed 91.78%-97.86% of reduced swamp converted into lakes on the
basis of remote sensing image interpretation. China-s government
policy of implementing development in the river basin is the major
driving force of artificial wetland growth.
Abstract: Animated graph gives some good impressions in
presenting information. However, not many people are able to produce it because the process of generating an animated graph requires some technical skills. This work presents Content
Management System with Animated Graph (CMS-AG). It is a webbased system enabling users to produce an effective and interactive
graphical report in a short time period. It allows for three levels of user authentication, provides update profile, account management, template management, graph management, and track changes. The system development applies incremental development approach, object-oriented concepts and Web programming technologies. The design architecture promotes new technology of reporting. It also helps user cut off unnecessary expenses, save time and learn new things on different levels of users. In this paper, the developed system is described.
Abstract: Ontologies play an important role in semantic web applications and are often developed by different groups and continues to evolve over time. The knowledge in ontologies changes very rapidly that make the applications outdated if they continue to use old versions or unstable if they jump to new versions. Temporal frames using frame versioning and slot versioning are used to take care of dynamic nature of the ontologies. The paper proposes new tags and restructured OWL format enabling the applications to work with the old or new version of ontologies. Gene Ontology, a very dynamic ontology, has been used as a case study to explain the OWL Ontology with Temporal Tags.
Abstract: Moral decisions are considered as an intuitive process,
while conscious reasoning is mostly used only to justify those
intuitions. This problem is described in few different dual-process
theories of mind, that are being developed e.g. by Frederick and
Kahneman, Stanovich and Evans. Those theories recently evolved
into tri-process theories with a proposed process that makes ultimate
decision or allows to paraformal processing with focal bias..
Presented experiment compares the decision patterns to the
implications of those models.
In presented study participants (n=179) considered different
aspects of trolley dilemma or its footbridge version and decided after
that.
Results show that in the control group 70% of people decided to
use the lever to change tracks for the running trolley, and 20% chose
to push the fat man down the tracks. In contrast, after experimental
manipulation almost no one decided to act. Also the decision time
difference between dilemmas disappeared after experimental
manipulation.
The result supports the idea of three co-working processes:
intuitive (TASS), paraformal (reflective mind) and algorithmic
process.
Abstract: ebXML (Electronic Business using eXtensible
Markup Language) is an e-business standard, sponsored by
UN/CEFACT and OASIS, which enables enterprises to exchange
business messages, conduct trading relationships, communicate
data in common terms and define and register business
processes. While there is tremendous e-business value in the
ebXML, security remains an unsolved problem and one of the
largest barriers to adoption. XML security technologies emerging
recently have extensibility and flexibility suitable for security
implementation such as encryption, digital signature, access
control and authentication.
In this paper, we propose ebXML business transaction models
that allow trading partners to securely exchange XML based
business transactions by employing XML security technologies.
We show how each XML security technology meets the ebXML
standard by constructing the test software and validating messages
between the trading partners.
Abstract: Nitrogen loss from irrigated cropland, particularly
sandy soils, significantly contributes to nitrate (NO3
-) levels in
surface and groundwaters. Thus, it is of great interest to use
inexpensive natural products that can increase the fertilizer efficiency
and decrease nitrate leaching. In this study, the ability of natural
Iranian zeolite clinoptilolite (Cp) and surfactant modified zeolite
clinoptilolite (SMZ) to remove NH4
+ and NO3
-, respectively, from
aqueous solutions was determined. The feasibility of using Cp and
SMZ as soil amendment to reduce nitrate leaching from soil using
lysimeters was also investigated. Zeolite showed 10.23% to 88.42%
NH4
+ removal efficiency over a wide range of initial NH4
+
concentrations. Nitrate removal efficiency by SMZ was 32.26% to
82.26%. Field study results showed that Cp and SMZ significantly (p
< 0.05) reduced leachate NO3-N concentration compared to control.
There was no significant difference between maximum and mean
leachate NO3-N concentration of SMZ lysimeters and those of Cp
lysimeters.
