Abstract: The aim of the current study is to develop a numerical
tool that is capable of achieving an optimum shape and design of
hyperbolic cooling towers based on coupling a non-linear finite
element model developed in-house and a genetic algorithm
optimization technique. The objective function is set to be the
minimum weight of the tower. The geometric modeling of the tower
is represented by means of B-spline curves. The finite element
method is applied to model the elastic buckling behaviour of a tower
subjected to wind pressure and dead load. The study is divided into
two main parts. The first part investigates the optimum shape of the
tower corresponding to minimum weight assuming constant
thickness. The study is extended in the second part by introducing the
shell thickness as one of the design variables in order to achieve an
optimum shape and design. Design, functionality and practicality
constraints are applied.
Abstract: Many studies have focused on the nonlinear analysis
of electroencephalography (EEG) mainly for the characterization of
epileptic brain states. It is assumed that at least two states of the
epileptic brain are possible: the interictal state characterized by a
normal apparently random, steady-state EEG ongoing activity; and
the ictal state that is characterized by paroxysmal occurrence of
synchronous oscillations and is generally called in neurology, a
seizure.
The spatial and temporal dynamics of the epileptogenic process is
still not clear completely especially the most challenging aspects of
epileptology which is the anticipation of the seizure. Despite all the
efforts we still don-t know how and when and why the seizure
occurs. However actual studies bring strong evidence that the
interictal-ictal state transition is not an abrupt phenomena. Findings
also indicate that it is possible to detect a preseizure phase.
Our approach is to use the neural network tool to detect interictal
states and to predict from those states the upcoming seizure ( ictal
state). Analysis of the EEG signal based on neural networks is used
for the classification of EEG as either seizure or non-seizure. By
applying prediction methods it will be possible to predict the
upcoming seizure from non-seizure EEG.
We will study the patients admitted to the epilepsy monitoring
unit for the purpose of recording their seizures. Preictal, ictal, and
post ictal EEG recordings are available on such patients for analysis
The system will be induced by taking a body of samples then
validate it using another. Distinct from the two first ones a third body
of samples is taken to test the network for the achievement of
optimum prediction. Several methods will be tried 'Backpropagation
ANN' and 'RBF'.
Abstract: Petri Net (PN) has proven to be effective graphical, mathematical, simulation, and control tool for Discrete Event Systems (DES). But, with the growth in the complexity of modern industrial, and communication systems, PN found themselves inadequate to address the problems of uncertainty, and imprecision in data. This gave rise to amalgamation of Fuzzy logic with Petri nets and a new tool emerged with the name of Fuzzy Petri Nets (FPN). Although there had been a lot of research done on FPN and a number of their applications have been anticipated, but their basic types and structure are still ambiguous. Therefore, in this research, an effort is made to categorize FPN according to their structure and algorithms Further, literature review of the applications of FPN in the light of their classifications has been done.

Abstract: The Long-range Energy and Alternatives Planning (LEAP) energy planning system has been developed for South Africa, for the 2005 base year and a limited number of plausible future scenarios that may have significant implications (negative or positive) in terms of environmental impacts. The system quantifies the national energy demand for the domestic, commercial, transport, industry and agriculture sectors, the supply of electricity and liquid fuels, and the resulting emissions. The South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) identified the need to develop an environmental assessment tool, based on the LEAP energy planning system, to provide decision-makers and stakeholders with the necessary understanding of the environmental impacts associated with different energy scenarios. A comprehensive analysis of indicators that are used internationally and in South Africa was done and the available data was accessed to select a reasonable number of indicators that could be utilized in energy planning. A consultative process was followed to determine the needs of different stakeholders on the required indicators and also the most suitable form of reporting. This paper demonstrates the application of Energy Environmental Sustainability Indicators (EESIs) as part of the developed tool, which assists with the identification of the environmental consequences of energy generation and use scenarios and thereby promotes sustainability, since environmental considerations can then be integrated into the preparation and adoption of policies, plans, programs and projects. Recommendations are made to refine the tool further for South Africa.
Abstract: Nowadays scientific data is inevitably digital and
stored in a wide variety of formats in heterogeneous systems.
Scientists need to access an integrated view of remote or local
heterogeneous data sources with advanced data accessing, analyzing,
and visualization tools. This research suggests the use of Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA) to integrate biological data from
different data sources. This work shows SOA will solve the problems
that facing integration process and if the biologist scientists can
access the biological data in easier way. There are several methods to
implement SOA but web service is the most popular method. The
Microsoft .Net Framework used to implement proposed architecture.
Abstract: We consider linear regression models where both input data (the values of independent variables) and output data (the observations of the dependent variable) are interval-censored. We introduce a possibilistic generalization of the least squares estimator, so called OLS-set for the interval model. This set captures the impact of the loss of information on the OLS estimator caused by interval censoring and provides a tool for quantification of this effect. We study complexity-theoretic properties of the OLS-set. We also deal with restricted versions of the general interval linear regression model, in particular the crisp input – interval output model. We give an argument that natural descriptions of the OLS-set in the crisp input – interval output cannot be computed in polynomial time. Then we derive easily computable approximations for the OLS-set which can be used instead of the exact description. We illustrate the approach by an example.
Abstract: This paper discusses the novel graphical approach for
stability analysis of multi induction motor drive controlled by a single
inverter. Stability issue arises in parallel connected induction motors
under unbalanced load conditions. The two powerful globally
accepted modeling and simulation software packages such as
MATLAB and LabVIEW are selected to perform the stability
analysis. The stability investigation is performed for different load
conditions and difference in stator and rotor resistances among the
two motors. It is very simple and effective than the techniques
presented to obtain the stability of the parallel connected induction
motor drive under unbalanced load conditions. Approximate transfer
functions are considered to model the induction motors, load
dynamics, speed controllers and inverter. Simulink library tools are
utilized to model the entire drive scheme in MATLAB. Stability
study is discussed in LabVIEW using control design and simulation
toolkits. Simulation results are illustrated for various running
conditions to demonstrate the effectiveness of the transfer function
method.
Abstract: Cosmic showers, during the transit through space, produce
sub - products as a result of interactions with the intergalactic
or interstellar medium which after entering earth generate secondary
particles called Extensive Air Shower (EAS). Detection and analysis
of High Energy Particle Showers involve a plethora of theoretical and
experimental works with a host of constraints resulting in inaccuracies
in measurements. Therefore, there exist a necessity to develop a
readily available system based on soft-computational approaches
which can be used for EAS analysis. This is due to the fact that soft
computational tools such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN)s can be
trained as classifiers to adapt and learn the surrounding variations. But
single classifiers fail to reach optimality of decision making in many
situations for which Multiple Classifier System (MCS) are preferred
to enhance the ability of the system to make decisions adjusting
to finer variations. This work describes the formation of an MCS
using Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Recurrent Neural Network
(RNN) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) with data inputs
from correlation mapping Self Organizing Map (SOM) blocks and
the output optimized by another SOM. The results show that the setup
can be adopted for real time practical applications for prediction
of primary energy and location of EAS from density values captured
using detectors in a circular grid.
Abstract: The proposed multiplexer-based novel 1-bit full
adder cell is schematized by using DSCH2 and its layout is generated
by using microwind VLSI CAD tool. The adder cell layout
interconnect analysis is performed by using BSIM4 layout analyzer.
The adder circuit is compared with other six existing adder circuits
for parametric analysis. The proposed adder cell gives better
performance than the other existing six adder circuits in terms of
power, propagation delay and PDP. The proposed adder circuit is
further analyzed for interconnect analysis, which gives better
performance than other adder circuits in terms of layout thickness,
width and height.
Abstract: A new approach based on the consideration that electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are chaotic signals was presented for automated diagnosis of electroencephalographic changes. This consideration was tested successfully using the nonlinear dynamics tools, like the computation of Lyapunov exponents. This paper presented the usage of statistics over the set of the Lyapunov exponents in order to reduce the dimensionality of the extracted feature vectors. Since classification is more accurate when the pattern is simplified through representation by important features, feature extraction and selection play an important role in classifying systems such as neural networks. Multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) architectures were formulated and used as basis for detection of electroencephalographic changes. Three types of EEG signals (EEG signals recorded from healthy volunteers with eyes open, epilepsy patients in the epileptogenic zone during a seizure-free interval, and epilepsy patients during epileptic seizures) were classified. The selected Lyapunov exponents of the EEG signals were used as inputs of the MLPNN trained with Levenberg- Marquardt algorithm. The classification results confirmed that the proposed MLPNN has potential in detecting the electroencephalographic changes.
Abstract: We consider the problem of bandwidth allocation in a

of multiple applications with diverse requirements and describe a

Abstract: This paper makes an attempt to solve the problem of
searching and retrieving of similar MRI photos via Internet services
using morphological features which are sourced via the original
image. This study is aiming to be considered as an additional tool of
searching and retrieve methods. Until now the main way of the
searching mechanism is based on the syntactic way using keywords.
The technique it proposes aims to serve the new requirements of
libraries. One of these is the development of computational tools for
the control and preservation of the intellectual property of digital
objects, and especially of digital images. For this purpose, this paper
proposes the use of a serial number extracted by using a previously
tested semantic properties method. This method, with its center being
the multi-layers of a set of arithmetic points, assures the following
two properties: the uniqueness of the final extracted number and the
semantic dependence of this number on the image used as the
method-s input. The major advantage of this method is that it can
control the authentication of a published image or its partial
modification to a reliable degree. Also, it acquires the better of the
known Hash functions that the digital signature schemes use and
produces alphanumeric strings for cases of authentication checking,
and the degree of similarity between an unknown image and an
original image.
Abstract: Theory of Constraints has been emerging as an
important tool for optimization of manufacturing/service systems.
Goldratt in his first book “ The Goal " gave the introduction on
Theory of Constraints and its applications in a factory scenario. A
large number of production managers around the globe read this book
but only a few could implement it in their plants because the book did
not explain the steps to implement TOC in the factory. To overcome
these limitations, Goldratt wrote this book to explain TOC, DBR and
the method to implement it. In this paper, an attempt has been made
to summarize the salient features of TOC and DBR listed in the book
and the correct approach to implement TOC in a factory setting. The
simulator available along with the book was actually used by the
authors and the claim of Goldratt regarding the use of DBR and
Buffer management to ease the work of production managers was
tested and was found to be correct.
Abstract: The concept of e-Learning is now emerging in Sub Saharan African countries like Tanzania. Due to economic constraints and other social and cultural factors faced by these countries, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is increasing at a very low pace. The digital divide threat has propelled the Government of Tanzania to put in place the national ICT Policy in 2003 which defines the direction of all ICT activities nationally. Among the main focused areas is the use of ICT in education, since for the development of any country, there is a need of creating knowledge based society. This paper discusses the initiatives made so far to introduce the use of ICT tools to some secondary schools using open source software in e-content development to facilitate a self-learning environment
Abstract: The connection between solar activity and adverse phenomena in the Earth’s environment that can affect space and ground based technologies has spurred interest in Space Weather (SW) research. A great effort has been put on the development of suitable models that can provide advanced forecast of SW events. With the progress in computational technology, it is becoming possible to develop operational large scale physics based models which can incorporate the most important physical processes and domains of the Sun-Earth system. In order to enhance our SW prediction capabilities we are developing advanced numerical tools. With operational requirements in mind, our goal is to develop a modular simulation framework of propagation of the disturbances from the Sun through interplanetary space to the Earth. Here, we report and discuss on the development of coronal field and solar wind components for a large scale MHD code. The model for these components is based on a potential field source surface model and an empirical Wang-Sheeley-Arge solar wind relation.
Abstract: An application framework provides a reusable design
and implementation for a family of software systems. Frameworks
are introduced to reduce the cost of a product line (i.e., a family of
products that shares the common features). Software testing is a timeconsuming
and costly ongoing activity during the application
software development process. Generating reusable test cases for the
framework applications during the framework development stage,
and providing and using the test cases to test part of the framework
application whenever the framework is used reduces the application
development time and cost considerably. This paper introduces the
Framework Interface State Transition Tester (FIST2), a tool for
automated unit testing of Java framework applications. During the
framework development stage, given the formal descriptions of the
framework hooks, the specifications of the methods of the
framework-s extensible classes, and the illegal behavior description
of the Framework Interface Classes (FICs), FIST2 generates unitlevel
test cases for the classes. At the framework application
development stage, given the customized method specifications of
the implemented FICs, FIST2 automates the use, execution, and
evaluation of the already generated test cases to test the implemented
FICs. The paper illustrates the use of the FIST2 tool for testing
several applications that use the SalesPoint framework.
Abstract: Fast development of technologies, economic globalization and many other external circumstances stimulate company’s competitiveness. One of the major trends in today’s business is the shift to the exploitation of the Internet and electronic environment for entrepreneurial needs. Latest researches confirm that e-environment provides a range of possibilities and opportunities for companies, especially for micro-, small- and medium-sized companies, which have limited resources. The usage of e-tools raises the effectiveness and the profitability of an organization, as well as its competitiveness.

Abstract: There has been a growing emphasis in
communication management from simple coordination of
promotional tools to a complex strategic process. This study will
examine the current marketing communications and engagement
strategies used in addressing the key stakeholders. In the case of
fertilizer industry in Malaysia, there has been little empirical
research on stakeholder communication when major challenges
facing the modern corporation is the need to communicate its
identity, its values and products in order to distinguish itself from
competitors. The study will employ both quantitative and qualitative
methods and the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to
establish a causal relationship amongst the key factors of stakeholder
communication strategies and increment in consumers-
choice/acceptance and impact on financial performance. One of the
major contributions is a conceptual framework for communication
strategies and engagement in increasing consumers- acceptance level
and the firm-s financial performance.
Abstract: An international cooperation between educators in
Australia and the US has led to a reconceptualization of the teaching
of a library science course at Appalachian State University. The
pedagogy of Action Learning coupled with a 3D virtual learning
environment immerses students in a social constructivist learning
space that incorporates and supports interaction and reflection. The
intent of this study was to build a bridge between theory and practice
by providing students with a tool set that promoted personal and
social reflection, and created and scaffolded a community of practice.
Besides, action learning is an educational process whereby the fifty
graduate students experienced their own actions and experience to
improve performance.
