Abstract: Till date, English as a Second Language (ESL) educators involved in teaching language and communication to engineering students face an uphill task in developing graduate communicative competency. This challenge is accentuated by the apparent lack of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials for engineering students in the engineering curriculum. As such, most ESL educators are forced to play multiple roles. They don tasks such as curriculum designers, material writers and teachers with limited knowledge of the disciplinary content. Previous research indicates that prospective professional engineers should possess some sub-sets of competency: technical, linguistic oral immediacy, meta-cognitive and rhetorical explanatory competence. Another study revealed that engineering students need to be equipped with technical and linguistic oral immediacy competence. However, little is known whether these competency needs are in line with the educators- perceptions of communicative competence. This paper examines the best mix of communicative competence subsets that create the magic for engineering students in technical oral presentations. For the purpose of this study, two groups of educators were interviewed. These educators were language and communication lecturers involved in teaching a speaking course and content experts who assess students- technical oral presentations at tertiary level. The findings indicate that these two groups differ in their perceptions
Abstract: The pipe inspection operation is the difficult detective
performance. Almost applications are mainly relies on a manual
recognition of defective areas that have carried out detection by an
engineer. Therefore, an automation process task becomes a necessary
in order to avoid the cost incurred in such a manual process. An
automated monitoring method to obtain a complete picture of the
sewer condition is proposed in this work. The focus of the research is
the automated identification and classification of discontinuities in
the internal surface of the pipe. The methodology consists of several
processing stages including image segmentation into the potential
defect regions and geometrical characteristic features. Automatic
recognition and classification of pipe defects are carried out by means
of using an artificial neural network technique (ANN) based on
Radial Basic Function (RBF). Experiments in a realistic environment
have been conducted and results are presented.
Abstract: The intention of this paper is, to help the user of evolutionary algorithms to adapt them easier to their problem at hand. For a lot of problems in the technical field it is not necessary to reach an optimum solution, but to reach a good solution in time. In many cases the solution is undetermined or there doesn-t exist a method to determine the solution. For these cases an evolutionary algorithm can be useful. This paper intents to give the user rules of thumb with which it is easier to decide if the problem is suitable for an evolutionary algorithm and how to design them.
Abstract: Due to today-s turbulent environment, manufacturing resources, particularly in assembly, must be reconfigured frequently. These reconfigurations are caused by various, partly cyclic, influencing factors. Hence, it is important to evaluate the innovation ability - the capability of resources to implement innovations quickly and efficiently without large expense - of manufacturing resources. For this purpose, a new methodology is presented in this article. Within the methodology, design structure matrices and graph theory are used. The results of the methodology include different indices to evaluate the innovation ability of the manufacturing resources. Due to the cyclicity of the influencing factors, the methodology can be used to synchronize the realization of adaptations.
Abstract: In this paper we evaluated the efficacy of
photodynamic treatment of infected wounds on pig animal model by
diffuse reflectance spectrometry. The study was conducted on fifteen
wounds contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that were
incubated for 30 min with methylene blue solution (c = 3.3 x 10-3 M)
and exposed to laser radiations (λ = 670 nm, P = 15 mW) for 15 min.
The efficiency of photodynamic inactivation of bacteria was
evaluated by microbiological exams and diffuse reflectance
spectrometry. The results of the microbiological exams showed that
the bacterial concentration has decreased from 6.93±0.138
logCFU/ml to 3.12±0.108 logCFU/ml. The spectral examination
showed that the diffuse reflectance of wounds contaminated with
Staphylococcus aureus has decreased from 5.06±0.036 % to
3.36±0.025 %. In conclusion, photodynamic therapy is an effective
method for the treatment of infected wounds and there is a correlation
between the CFU count and diffuse reflectance.
Abstract: The aim of the work presented here was to either use
existing forest dynamic simulation models or calibrate a new one
both within the SYMFOR framework with the purpose of examining
changes in stand level basal area and functional composition in
response to selective logging considering trees > 10 cm d.b.h for two
areas of undisturbed Amazonian non flooded tropical forest in Brazil
and one in Peru. Model biological realism was evaluated for forest in
the undisturbed and selectively logged state and it was concluded that
forest dynamics were realistically represented. Results of the logging
simulation experiments showed that in relation to undisturbed forest
simulation subject to no form of harvesting intervention there was a
significant amount of change over a 90 year simulation period that
was positively proportional to the intensity of logging. Areas which
had in the dynamic equilibrium of undisturbed forest a greater
proportion of a specific ecological guild of trees known as the light
hardwoods (LHW’s) seemed to respond more favorably in terms of
less deviation but only within a specific range of baseline forest
composition beyond which compositional diversity became more
important. These finds are in line partially with practical management
experience and partiality basic systematics theory respectively.
Abstract: In this paper we present the modeling, design, and
experimental testing of a nerve cuff multi-electrode system for
diameter-selective vagus nerve stimulation.
The multi-electrode system contained ninety-nine platinum
electrodes embedded within a self-curling spiral silicone sheet. The
electrodes were organized in a matrix having nine parallel groups,
each containing eleven electrodes.
Preliminary testing of the nerve cuff was performed in an isolated
segment of a swinish left cervical vagus nerve. For selective vagus
nerve stimulation, precisely defined current quasitrapezoidal,
asymmetric and biphasic stimulating pulses were applied to
preselected locations along the left vagus segment via appointed
group of three electrodes within the cuff. Selective stimulation was
obtained by anodal block. However, these pulses may not be safe for
a long-term application because of a frequently used high imbalance
between the cathodic and anodic part of the stimulating pulse.
Preliminary results show that the cuff was capable of exciting A
and B-fibres, and, that for a certain range of parameters used in
stimulating pulses, the contribution of A-fibres to the CAP was
slightly reduced and the contribution of B-fibres was slightly larger.
Results also showed that measured CAPs are not greatly
influenced by the imbalance between a charge Qc injected in cathodic
and Qa in anodic phase of quasitrapezoidal, asymmetric and biphasic
pulses.
Abstract: This paper presents the application of Intelligent
Techniques to the various duties of Intelligent Condition Monitoring
Systems (ICMS) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Robots. These
Systems are intended to support these Intelligent Robots in the event
of a Fault occurrence. Neural Networks are used for Diagnosis, whilst
Fuzzy Logic is intended for Prognosis and Remedy. The ultimate
goals of ICMS are to save large losses in financial cost, time and
data.
Abstract: Nurses in an Armed Force Hospital (AFH) expose to stronger stress than those in a civil hospital, especially in an emergency department (ED). Ironically, stresses of these nurses received few if any attention in academic research in the past. This study collects 227 samples from the emergency departments of four armed force hospitals in central and southern Taiwan. The research indicates that the top five stressors are a massive casualty event, delayed physician support, overloads of routine work, overloads of assignments, and annoying paper work. Excessive work loading was found to be the primary source of stress. Nurses who were perceived to have greater stress levels were more inclined to deploy emotion-oriented approaches and more likely to seek job rotations. Professional stressors and problem-oriented approaches were positively correlated. Unlike other local studies, this study concludes that the excessive work-loading is more stressful in an AFH.
Abstract: For maintenance of a spine stability during the
postoperative period a transpedicular fixing of its elements is often
used. Usually the transpedicular systems are formed of rods which as
a result form a design of the frame type, fastening by screws to
vertebras. Such design should be rigid and perceive loadings
operating from the spine without essential deformations. From the
perfection point of view of known designs their stress
whole, and each of elements, in particular is of interest. In this study
the modeling of the transpedicular screw is performed and
estimation of its deformations taking into account interaction with a
vertebra body having variable structure is made.
Abstract: The objective of global optimization is to find the
globally best solution of a model. Nonlinear models are ubiquitous
in many applications and their solution often requires a global
search approach; i.e. for a function f from a set A ⊂ Rn to
the real numbers, an element x0 ∈ A is sought-after, such that
∀ x ∈ A : f(x0) ≤ f(x). Depending on the field of application,
the question whether a found solution x0 is not only a local minimum
but a global one is very important.
This article presents a probabilistic approach to determine the
probability of a solution being a global minimum. The approach is
independent of the used global search method and only requires a
limited, convex parameter domain A as well as a Lipschitz continuous
function f whose Lipschitz constant is not needed to be known.
Abstract: In the paper a detailed analysis of the dynamic
response of a cooling tower shell to mining tremors originated from
two main regions of mining activity in Poland (Upper Silesian Coal
Basin and Legnica-Glogow Copper District) was presented. The
representative time histories registered in the both regions were used
as ground motion data in calculations of the dynamic response of the
structure. It was proved that the dynamic response of the shell is
strongly dependent not only on the level of vibration amplitudes but
on the dominant frequency range of the mining shock typical for the
mining region as well. Also a vertical component of vibrations
occurred to have considerable influence on the total dynamic
response of the shell. Finally, it turned out that non-uniformity of
kinematic excitation resulting from spatial variety of ground motion
plays a significant role in dynamic analysis of large-dimensional
shells under mining shocks.
Abstract: This paper presents a signal analysis process for
improving energy completeness based on the Hilbert-Huang
Transform (HHT). Firstly, the vibration signal of a DC Motor obtained
by employing an accelerometer is the model used to analyze the
signal. Secondly, the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and Hilbert
spectrum of the decomposed signal are obtained by applying HHT.
The results of the IMFs constituent and the original signal are
compared and the process of energy loss is discussed. Finally, the
differences between Wavelet Transform (WT) and HHT in analyzing
the signal are compared. The simulated results reveal the analysis
process based on HHT is advantageous for the enhancement of energy
completeness.
Abstract: The term interactive education indicates the meaning
related with multidisciplinary aspects of distance education following
contemporary means around a common basis with different
functional requirements. The aim of this paper is to reflect the new
techniques in education with the new methods and inventions. These
methods are better supplied by interactivity. The integration of
interactive facilities in the discipline of education with distance
learning is not a new concept but in addition the usage of these
methods on design issue is newly being adapted to design education.
In this paper the general approach of this method and after the
analysis of different samples, the advantages and disadvantages of
these approaches are being identified. The method of this paper is to
evaluate the related samples and then analyzing the main hypothesis.
The main focus is to mention the formation processes of this
education. Technological developments in education should be
filtered around the necessities of the design education and the
structure of the system could then be formed or renewed. The
conclusion indicates that interactive methods of education in design
issue is a meaning capturing not only technical and computational
intelligence aspects but also aesthetical and artistic approaches
coming together around the same purpose.
Abstract: The quick training algorithms and accurate solution
procedure for incremental learning aim at improving the efficiency of
training of SVR, whereas there are some disadvantages for them, i.e.
the nonconvergence of the formers for changeable training set and
the inefficiency of the latter for a massive dataset. In order to handle
the problems, a new training algorithm for a changeable training
set, named Approximation Incremental Training Algorithm (AITA),
was proposed. This paper explored the reason of nonconvergence
theoretically and discussed the realization of AITA, and finally
demonstrated the benefits of AITA both on precision and efficiency.
Abstract: We identify clawback triggers from firms- proxy
statements (Form DEF 14A) and use the likelihood of restatements to
proxy for financial reporting quality. Based on a sample of 578 U.S.
firms that voluntarily adopt clawback provisions during 2003-2009,
when restatement-based triggers could be decomposed into two types:
fraud and unintentional error, and we do observe the evidence that
using fraud triggers is associated with high financial reporting quality.
The findings support that fraud triggers can enhance deterrent effect of
clawback provision by establishing a viable disincentive against fraud,
misconduct, and otherwise harmful acts. These results are robust to
controlling for the compensation components, to different sample
specifications and to a number of sensitivity.
Abstract: The stability analysis of Marangoni convection in porous media with a deformable upper free surface is investigated. The linear stability theory and the normal mode analysis are applied and the resulting eigenvalue problem is solved exactly. The Darcy law and the Brinkman model are used to describe the flow in the porous medium heated from below. The effect of the Crispation number, Bond number and the Biot number are analyzed for the stability of the system. It is found that a decrease in the Crispation number and an increase in the Bond number delay the onset of convection in porous media. In addition, the system becomes more stable when the Biot number is increases and the Daeff number is decreases.
Abstract: The pollution of sediments sampled from the North
Port by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated.
Concentrations of PAHs estimated in the port sediments ranged from
199 to 2851.2 μg/kg dw. The highest concentration was found which
is closed to the Berth line, this locations affected by intensive
shipping activities and Land based runoff and they were dominated
by the high molecular weight PAHs (4–6- rings). Source
identification showed that PAHs originated mostly from the
pyrogenic source either from the combustion of fossil fuels, grass,
wood and coal (majority of the samples). Ecological Risk Assessment
on the port sediments presented that slightly adverse ecological
effects to biological community are expected to occur at the vicinity
of the stations 1 and 4. Thus PAHs are not considered as pollutants of
concern in the North Port.
Abstract: This paper presents an improved image segmentation
model with edge preserving regularization based on the
piecewise-smooth Mumford-Shah functional. A level set formulation
is considered for the Mumford-Shah functional minimization in
segmentation, and the corresponding partial difference equations are
solved by the backward Euler discretization. Aiming at encouraging
edge preserving regularization, a new edge indicator function is
introduced at level set frame. In which all the grid points which is used
to locate the level set curve are considered to avoid blurring the edges
and a nonlinear smooth constraint function as regularization term is
applied to smooth the image in the isophote direction instead of the
gradient direction. In implementation, some strategies such as a new
scheme for extension of u+ and u- computation of the grid points and
speedup of the convergence are studied to improve the efficacy of the
algorithm. The resulting algorithm has been implemented and
compared with the previous methods, and has been proved efficiently
by several cases.
Abstract: Square pipes (pipes with square cross sections) are
being used for various industrial objectives, such as machine
structure components and housing/building elements. The utilization
of them is extending rapidly and widely. Hence, the out-put of those
pipes is increasing and new application fields are continually
developing.
Due to various demands in recent time, the products have to
satisfy difficult specifications with high accuracy in dimensions. The
reshaping process design of pipes with square cross sections;
however, is performed by trial and error and based on expert-s
experience.
In this paper, a computer-aided simulation is developed based on
the 2-D elastic-plastic method with consideration of the shear
deformation to analyze the reshaping process. Effect of various
parameters such as diameter of the circular pipe and mechanical
properties of metal on product dimension and quality can be
evaluated by using this simulation. Moreover, design of reshaping
process include determination of shrinkage of cross section,
necessary number of stands, radius of rolls and height of pipe at each
stand, are investigated. Further, it is shown that there are good
agreements between the results of the design method and the
experimental results.
