Abstract: Surface roughness (Ra) is one of the most important requirements in machining process. In order to obtain better surface roughness, the proper setting of cutting parameters is crucial before the process take place. This research presents the development of mathematical model for surface roughness prediction before milling process in order to evaluate the fitness of machining parameters; spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. 84 samples were run in this study by using FANUC CNC Milling α-Τ14ιE. Those samples were randomly divided into two data sets- the training sets (m=60) and testing sets(m=24). ANOVA analysis showed that at least one of the population regression coefficients was not zero. Multiple Regression Method was used to determine the correlation between a criterion variable and a combination of predictor variables. It was established that the surface roughness is most influenced by the feed rate. By using Multiple Regression Method equation, the average percentage deviation of the testing set was 9.8% and 9.7% for training data set. This showed that the statistical model could predict the surface roughness with about 90.2% accuracy of the testing data set and 90.3% accuracy of the training data set.
Abstract: A systematic and exhaustive method based on the group
structure of a unitary Lie algebra is proposed to generate an enormous
number of quantum codes. With respect to the algebraic structure,
the orthogonality condition, which is the central rule of generating
quantum codes, is proved to be fully equivalent to the distinguishability
of the elements in this structure. In addition, four types of
quantum codes are classified according to the relation of the codeword
operators and some initial quantum state. By linking the unitary Lie
algebra with the additive group, the classical correspondences of some
of these quantum codes can be rendered.
Abstract: The overall penumbra is usually defined as the
distance, p20–80, separating the 20% and 80% of the dose on the beam axis at the depth of interest. This overall penumbra accounts
also for the fact that some photons emitted by the distal parts of the source are only partially attenuated by the collimator. Medulloblastoma is the most common type of childhood brain tumor
and often spreads to the spine. Current guidelines call for surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible, followed by radiation of the brain and spinal cord, and finally treatment with chemotherapy.
The purpose of this paper was to present results on an Uniformity of dose distribution in radiation fields surrounding the spine using film
dosimetry and comparison with 3D treatment planning software.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the role of
myotonometry in assessment muscle viscoelasticity by measurement
of force index (IF) and stiffness (S) at thigh muscle groups. The
results are used for improve the muscle training. The method is based
on mechanic impulse on the muscle group, that involve a muscle
response like acceleration, speed and amplitude curves. From these
we have information about elasticity, stiffness beginning from
mechanic oscillations of muscle tissue. Using this method offer the
possibility for monitoring the muscle capacity for produce mechanic
energy, that allows a efficiency of movement with a minimal tissue
deformation.
Abstract: Samples of CoFe2-xCrxO4 where x varies from 0.0 to 0.5 were prepared by co-precipitation route. These samples were sintered at 750°C for 2 hours. These particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) at room temperature. The FCC spinel structure was confirmed by XRD patterns of the samples. The crystallite sizes of these particles were calculated from the most intense peak by Scherrer formula. The crystallite sizes lie in the range of 37-60 nm. The lattice parameter was found decreasing upon substitution of Cr. DC electrical resistivity was measured as a function of temperature. The room temperature thermoelectric power was measured for the prepared samples. The magnitude of Seebeck coefficient depends on the composition and resistivity of the samples.
Abstract: Intradiscal and intervertebral pressure transducers
were developed. They were used to map the pressures in the nucleus
and within the annulus of the human spinal segments. Their stressrelaxation
were recorded over a period of time for nucleus
pressure, applied load, and peripherial strain against time. The
results show that for normal discs, pressures in the nucleus are
viscoelastic in nature with the applied compressive load.
Mechanical strains which develop around the periphery of the
vertebral body are also viscoelastic with the applied compressive
load. Applied compressive load against time also shows viscoelastic
behavior. However, annulus does not respond viscoelastically with
the applied load. It showed a linear response to compressive loading.
Abstract: Nowadays, the demand for high product quality
focuses extensive attention to the quality of machined surface. The
(CNC) milling machine facilities provides a wide variety of
parameters set-up, making the machining process on the glass
excellent in manufacturing complicated special products compared to
other machining processes. However, the application of grinding
process on the CNC milling machine could be an ideal solution to
improve the product quality, but adopting the right machining
parameters is required. In glass milling operation, several machining
parameters are considered to be significant in affecting surface
roughness. These parameters include the lubrication pressure, spindle
speed, feed rate and depth of cut. In this research work, a fuzzy logic
model is offered to predict the surface roughness of a machined
surface in glass milling operation using CBN grinding tool. Four
membership functions are allocated to be connected with each input
of the model. The predicted results achieved via fuzzy logic model
are compared to the experimental result. The result demonstrated
settlement between the fuzzy model and experimental results with the
93.103% accuracy.
Abstract: The identification and classification of the spine deformity play an important role when considering surgical planning for adolescent patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The subject of this article is the Lenke classification of scoliotic spines using Cobb angle measurements. The purpose is two-fold: (1) design a rulebased diagram to assist clinicians in the classification process and (2) investigate a computer classifier which improves the classification time and accuracy. The rule-based diagram efficiency was evaluated in a series of scoliotic classifications by 10 clinicians. The computer classifier was tested on a radiographic measurement database of 603 patients. Classification accuracy was 93% using the rule-based diagram and 99% for the computer classifier. Both the computer classifier and the rule based diagram can efficiently assist clinicians in their Lenke classification of spine scoliosis.
Abstract: Arvia®, a spin-out company of University of Manchester, UK is commercialising a water treatment technology for the removal of low concentrations of organics from water. This technology is based on the adsorption of organics onto graphite based adsorbents coupled with their electrochemical regeneration in a simple electrochemical cell. In this paper, the potential of the process to adsorb microorganisms and electrochemically disinfect them present in water has been demonstrated. Bench scale experiments have indicated that the process of adsorption using graphite adsorbents with electrochemical regeneration can be used for water disinfection effectively. The most likely mechanisms of disinfection of water through this process include direct electrochemical oxidation and electrochemical chlorination.
Abstract: Public awareness towards green energy are on the rise and this can be prove by many product being manufactured or prerequired to be made as energy saving devices mainly to save consumer from spending more on utility billing. These schemes are popular nowadays and many homemade appliances are turned into energy saving gadget which attracts the attention of consumers. Knowing the public demands and pattern towards purchasing home appliances thus the idea of “energy saving suction hood (ESSH)" is proposed. The ESSH can be used in many places that require smoke ventilation or even to reduce the room temperature as many conventional suction hoods (CSH) do, but this device works automatically by the usage of sensors that detects the smoke/temperature and automatically spins the exhaust fan. As it turns, the mechanical rotation rotates the AC generator which is coupled together with the fan and then charges the battery. The innovation of this product is, it does not rely on the utility supply as it is also hook up with a solar panel which also charges the battery, Secondly, it generates energy as the exhaust fan mechanically rotates. Thirdly, an energy loop back feature is introduced to this system which will supply for the ventilator fan. Another major innovation is towards interfacing this device with an in house production of generator. This generator is produced by proper design on stator as well as rotor to reduce the losses. A comparison is made between the ESSH and the CSH and result shows that the ESSH saves 172.8kWh/year of utility supply which is used by CSH. This amount of energy can save RM 3.14 from monthly utility bill and a total of RM 37.67 per year. In fact this product can generate 175 Watt of power from generator(75W) and solar panel(100W) that can be used either to supply other household appliances and/or to loop back to supply the fans motor. The innovation of this system is essential for future production of other equipment by using the loopback power method and turning most equipment into a standalone system.
Abstract: The experimental study of position control of a light
weight and small size robotic finger during non-contact motion is
presented in this paper. The finger possesses fingertip pinching and
self adaptive grasping capabilities, and is made of a seven bar linkage
mechanism with a slider in the middle phalanx. The control system is
tested under the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control
algorithm and Recursive Least Square (RLS) based Feedback Error
Learning (FEL) control scheme to overcome the uncertainties present
in the plant. The experiments conducted in Matlab Simulink and xPC
Target environments show that the overall control strategy is efficient
in controlling the finger movement.
Abstract: The optimal control problem for the viscoelastic melt
spinning process has not been reported yet in the literature. In this
study, an optimal control problem for a mathematical model of a
viscoelastic melt spinning process is considered. Maxwell-Oldroyd
model is used to describe the rheology of the polymeric material, the
fiber is made of. The extrusion velocity of the polymer at the spinneret
as well as the velocity and the temperature of the quench air and the
fiber length serve as control variables. A constrained optimization
problem is derived and the first–order optimality system is set up
to obtain the adjoint equations. Numerical solutions are carried out
using a steepest descent algorithm. A computer program in MATLAB
is developed for simulations.
Abstract: The study of human hand morphology reveals that developing an artificial hand with the capabilities of human hand is an extremely challenging task. This paper presents the development of a robotic prosthetic hand focusing on the improvement of a tendon driven mechanism towards a biomimetic prosthetic hand. The design of this prosthesis hand is geared towards achieving high level of dexterity and anthropomorphism by means of a new hybrid mechanism that integrates a miniature motor driven actuation mechanism, a Shape Memory Alloy actuated mechanism and a passive mechanical linkage. The synergy of these actuators enables the flexion-extension movement at each of the finger joints within a limited size, shape and weight constraints. Tactile sensors are integrated on the finger tips and the finger phalanges area. This prosthesis hand is developed with an exact size ratio that mimics a biological hand. Its behavior resembles the human counterpart in terms of working envelope, speed and torque, and thus resembles both the key physical features and the grasping functionality of an adult hand.
Abstract: 2D/3D registration is a special case of medical image
registration which is of particular interest to surgeons. Applications
of 2D/3D registration are [1] radiotherapy planning and treatment
verification, spinal surgery, hip replacement, neurointerventions and
aortic stenting. The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature
review of the main methods for image registration for the 2D/3D
case. At the end of the paper an algorithm is proposed for 2D/3D
registration based on the Chebyssev polynomials iteration loop.
Abstract: The study of the variability of the postural strategies
in low back pain patients, as a criterion in evaluation of the
adaptability of this system to the environmental demands is the
purpose of this study. A cross-sectional case-control study was
performed on 21 recurrent non-specific low back pain patients and 21
healthy volunteers. The electromyography activity of Deltoid,
External Oblique (EO), Transverse Abdominis/Internal Oblique
(TrA/IO) and Erector Spine (ES) muscles of each person was
recorded in 75 rapid arm flexion with maximum acceleration.
Standard deviation of trunk muscles onset relative to deltoid muscle
onset were statistically analyzed by MANOVA . The results show
that chronic low back pain patients exhibit less variability in their
anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) in comparison with the
control group. There is a decrease in variability of postural control
system of recurrent non-specific low back pain patients that can
result in the persistence of pain and chronicity by decreasing the
adaptability to environmental demands.
Abstract: n-CdO/p-Si heterojunction diode was fabricated using
sol-gel spin coating technique which is a low cost and easily scalable
method for preparing of semiconductor films. The structural and
morphological properties of CdO film were investigated. The X-ray
diffraction (XRD) spectra indicated that the film was of
polycrystalline nature. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
images indicate that the surface morphology CdO film consists of the
clusters formed with the coming together of the nanoparticles. The
electrical characterization of Au/n-CdO/p–Si/Al heterojunction diode
was investigated by current-voltage. The ideality factor of the diode
was found to be 3.02 for room temperature. The reverse current of
the diode strongly increased with illumination intensity of 100
mWcm-2 and the diode gave a maximum open circuit voltage Voc of
0.04 V and short-circuits current Isc of 9.92×10-9 A.
Abstract: One-way functions are functions that are easy to
compute but hard to invert. Their existence is an open conjecture; it
would imply the existence of intractable problems (i.e. NP-problems
which are not in the P complexity class).
If true, the existence of one-way functions would have an impact
on the theoretical framework of physics, in particularly, quantum
mechanics. Such aspect of one-way functions has never been shown
before.
In the present work, we put forward the following.
We can calculate the microscopic state (say, the particle spin in the
z direction) of a macroscopic system (a measuring apparatus
registering the particle z-spin) by the system macroscopic state (the
apparatus output); let us call this association the function F. The
question is: can we compute the function F in the inverse direction?
In other words, can we compute the macroscopic state of the system
through its microscopic state (the preimage F -1)?
In the paper, we assume that the function F is a one-way function.
The assumption implies that at the macroscopic level the Schrödinger
equation becomes unfeasible to compute. This unfeasibility plays a
role of limit of the validity of the linear Schrödinger equation.
Abstract: The spin (ms) and orbital (mo) magnetic moment of
the antiferromagnetic NiO and MnO have been studied in the local
spin density approximation (LSDA+U) within full potential linear
muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO method with in the coulomb interaction
U varying from 0 to 10eV, exchange interaction J, from 0 to 1.0eV,
and volume compression VC in range of 0 to 80%. Our calculated
results shown that the spin magnetic moments and the orbital
magnetic moments increase linearly with increasing U and J. While
the interesting behaviour appears when volume compression is
greater than 70% for NiO and 50% for MnO at which ms collapses.
Further increase of volume compression to be at 80% leads to the
disappearance of both magnetic moments.
Abstract: A full six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) flight dynamics
model is proposed for the accurate prediction of short and long-range
trajectories of high spin and fin-stabilized projectiles via atmospheric
flight to final impact point. The projectiles is assumed to be both rigid
(non-flexible), and rotationally symmetric about its spin axis launched
at low and high pitch angles. The mathematical model is based on the
full equations of motion set up in the no-roll body reference frame and
is integrated numerically from given initial conditions at the firing
site. The projectiles maneuvering motion depends on the most
significant force and moment variations, in addition to wind and
gravity. The computational flight analysis takes into consideration the
Mach number and total angle of attack effects by means of the
variable aerodynamic coefficients. For the purposes of the present
work, linear interpolation has been applied from the tabulated database
of McCoy-s book. The developed computational method gives
satisfactory agreement with published data of verified experiments and
computational codes on atmospheric projectile trajectory analysis for
various initial firing flight conditions.
Abstract: State-dependent Riccati equation based controllers are
becoming increasingly popular because of having attractive
properties like optimality, stability and robustness. This paper focuses
on the design of a roll autopilot for a fin stabilized and canard
controlled 122mm artillery rocket using state-dependent Riccati
equation technique. Initial spin is imparted to rocket during launch
and it quickly decays due to straight tail fins. After the spin phase, the
roll orientation of rocket is brought to zero with the canard deflection
commands generated by the roll autopilot. Roll autopilot has been
developed by considering uncoupled roll, pitch and yaw channels.
The canard actuator is modeled as a second-order nonlinear system.
Elements of the state weighing matrix for Riccati equation have been
chosen to be state dependent to exploit the design flexibility offered
by the Riccati equation technique. Simulation results under varying
conditions of flight demonstrate the wide operating range of the
proposed autopilot.
