Abstract: This study focuses on how to control the outlet temperature of a solar air heater in a way simpler than the existing methods. In this work, five cases have been studied by using ANSYS Fluent based on a CFD numerical method. All the cases have been simulated by utilizing the same criteria and conditions like the temperature, materials, areas except the geometry. The case studies are conducted in Little Rock (LR), AR, USA during the winter time supposedly on 15th of December. A fresh air that is flowing with a velocity of 0.5 m/s and a flow rate of 0.009 m3/s. The results prove the possibility of achieving a controlled temperature just by changing the geometric shape of the heater. This geometry guarantees that the absorber plate always has a normal component of the solar radiation at any time during the day. The heater has a sectarian shape with a radius of 150 mm where the outlet temperature remains almost constant for six hours.
Abstract: Recently, advanced geotechnical engineering problems
related to soil movement, particle loss, and modeling of local failure
(i.e. discontinua) as well as modeling the in-contact structures (i.e.
continua) are of the great interest among researchers. The aim of this
research is to meet the requirements with respect to the modeling
of the above-mentioned two different domains simultaneously. To
this end, a coupled numerical method is introduced based on
Discrete Element Method (DEM) and eXtended-Finite Element
Method (X-FEM). In the coupled procedure, DEM is employed to
capture the interactions and relative movements of soil particles as
discontinua, while X-FEM is utilized to model in-contact structures as
continua, which may consist of different types of discontinuities. For
verification purposes, the new coupled approach is utilized to examine
benchmark problems including different contacts between/within
continua and discontinua. Results are validated by comparison with
those of existing analytical and numerical solutions. This study
proves that extended-finite-discrete element method can be used
to robustly analyze not only contact problems, but also other
types of discontinuities in continua such as (i) crack formations
and propagations, (ii) voids and bimaterial interfaces, and (iii)
combination of previous cases. In essence, the proposed method
can be used vastly in advanced soil-structure interaction problems to
investigate the micro and macro behaviour of the surrounding soil and
the response of the embedded structure that contains discontinuities.
Abstract: Apple bruise damage from harvesting, handling, transporting and sorting is considered to be the major source of reduced fruit quality, resulting in loss of profits for the entire fruit industry. The three factors which can physically cause fruit bruising are vibration, compression load and impact, the latter being the most common source of bruise damage. Therefore, prediction of the level of damage, stress distribution and deformation of the fruits under external force has become a very important challenge. In this study, experimental and numerical methods were used to better understand the impact caused when an apple is dropped from different heights onto a plastic surface and a conveyor belt. Results showed that the extent of fruit damage is significantly higher for plastic surface, being dependent on the height. In order to support the development of a biomimetic electronic device for the determination of fruit damage, the mechanical properties of the apple fruit were determined using mechanical tests. Preliminary results showed different values for the Young’s modulus according to the zone of the apple tested. Along with the mechanical characterization of the apple fruit, the development of the first two prototypes is discussed and the integration of the results obtained to construct the final element model of the apple is presented. This work will help to reduce significantly the bruise damage of fruits or vegetables during the entire processing which will allow the introduction of exportation destines and consequently an increase in the economic profits in this sector.
Abstract: This article presents a numerical method to find the
heat flux in an inhomogeneous inverse heat conduction problem with
linear boundary conditions and an extra specification at the terminal.
The method is based upon applying the satisfier function along with
the Ritz-Galerkin technique to reduce the approximate solution of the
inverse problem to the solution of a system of algebraic equations.
The instability of the problem is resolved by taking advantage of
the Landweber’s iterations as an admissible regularization strategy.
In computations, we find the stable and low-cost results which
demonstrate the efficiency of the technique.
Abstract: The development of numerical analysis and its
application to geomechanics problems have provided geotechnical
engineers with extremely powerful tools. One of the most important
problems in geotechnical engineering is the slope stability
assessment. It is a very difficult task due to several aspects such the
nature of the problem, experimental consideration, monitoring,
controlling, and assessment. The main objective of this paper is to
perform a comparative numerical study between the following
methods: The Limit Equilibrium (LEM), Finite Element (FEM),
Limit Analysis (LAM) and Distinct Element (DEM). The comparison
is conducted in terms of the safety factors and the critical slip
surfaces. Through the results, we see the feasibility to analyse slope
stability by many methods.
Abstract: According to 3D magnetic circuit of the transverse flux PM linear machine, distribution law is presented, and analytical expression of axial end flux leakage is derived using numerical method. Maxwell stress tensor is used to solve detent force of mover. A 3D finite element model of the transverse flux PM machine is built to analyze the flux distribution and detent force. Experimental results of the prototype verified the validity of axial end flux leakage and detent force theoretical derivation, the research on axial end flux leakage and detent force provides a valuable reference to other types of linear machine.
Abstract: The fluid-structure coupling is a natural phenomenon which reflects the effects of two continuums: fluid and structure of different types in the reciprocal action on each other, involving knowledge of elasticity and fluid mechanics. The solution for such problems is based on the relations of continuum mechanics and is mostly solved with numerical methods. It is a computational challenge to solve such problems because of the complex geometries, intricate physics of fluids, and complicated fluid-structure interactions. The way in which the interaction between fluid and solid is described gives the largest opportunity for reducing the computational effort. In this paper, a problem of fluid structure interaction is investigated with two-way coupling method. The formulation Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) was used, by considering a dynamic grid, where the solid is described by a Lagrangian formulation and the fluid by a Eulerian formulation. The simulation was made on the ANSYS software.
Abstract: In this work, we propose an algorithm developed under Python language for the modeling of ordinary scalar Bessel beams and their discrete superpositions and subsequent calculation of optical forces exerted over dielectric spherical particles. The mathematical formalism, based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory, is implemented in Python for its large number of free mathematical (as SciPy and NumPy), data visualization (Matplotlib and PyJamas) and multiprocessing libraries. We also propose an approach, provided by a synchronized Software as Service (SaaS) in cloud computing, to develop a user interface embedded on a mobile application, thus providing users with the necessary means to easily introduce desired unknowns and parameters and see the graphical outcomes of the simulations right at their mobile devices. Initially proposed as a free Android-based application, such an App enables data post-processing in cloud-based architectures and visualization of results, figures and numerical tables.
Abstract: Cavities are frequently found beneath conduits on pile
foundations in old embankments. Cavity reduces seepage length
significantly and consequently causes piping failure of embankments.
Case studies of embankment failures indicate that the relative
settlement between ground and pile supported-concrete conduit was
the main reason of the cavity. In this paper, an attempt to simulate the
cavity-induced piping failure mechanism was made using finite
element numerical method. Piping potential is examined by carrying
out parametric study for influencing factors such as cavity length,
water level, and flow conditions. The concentration of hydraulic
gradient adjacent to cavity was found. It is found that the hydraulic
gradient close to the cavity exceeds considerably the critical hydraulic
gradient causing piping. Piping failure potential due to the existence of
cavity is evaluated and contour map for the potential risk of an
embankment for piping failure is proposed.
Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the numerical
implementation of the Hilbert Uniqueness Method for the exact
boundary controllability of Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. This study
may be difficult. This will depend on the problem under consideration
(geometry, control and dimension) and the numerical method used.
Knowledge of the asymptotic behaviour of the control governing the
system at time T may be useful for its calculation. This idea will
be developed in this study. We have characterized as a first step, the
solution by a minimization principle and proposed secondly a method
for its resolution to approximate the control steering the considered
system to rest at time T.
Abstract: In this study, the three-dimensional cavitating
turbulent flow in a complete Francis turbine is simulated using
mixture model for cavity/liquid two-phase flows. Numerical analysis
is carried out using ANSYS CFX software release 12, and standard k-ε
turbulence model is adopted for this analysis. The computational
fluid domain consist of spiral casing, stay vanes, guide vanes, runner
and draft tube. The computational domain is discretized with a threedimensional
mesh system of unstructured tetrahedron mesh. The
finite volume method (FVM) is used to solve the governing equations
of the mixture model. Results of cavitation on the runner’s blades
under three different boundary conditions are presented and
discussed. From the numerical results it has been found that the
numerical method was successfully applied to simulate the cavitating
two-phase turbulent flow through a Francis turbine, and also
cavitation is clearly predicted in the form of water vapor formation
inside the turbine. By comparison the numerical prediction results
with a real runner; it’s shown that the region of higher volume
fraction obtained by simulation is consistent with the region of runner
cavitation damage.
Abstract: In this article, we used the residual correction method
to deal with transient thermoelastic problems with a hollow spherical
region when the continuum medium possesses spherically isotropic
thermoelastic properties. Based on linear thermoelastic theory, the
equations of hyperbolic heat conduction and thermoelastic motion
were combined to establish the thermoelastic dynamic model with
consideration of the deformation acceleration effect and non-Fourier
effect under the condition of transient thermal shock. The approximate
solutions of temperature and displacement distributions are obtained
using the residual correction method based on the maximum principle
in combination with the finite difference method, making it easier and
faster to obtain upper and lower approximations of exact solutions.
The proposed method is found to be an effective numerical method
with satisfactory accuracy. Moreover, the result shows that the effect
of transient thermal shock induced by deformation acceleration is
enhanced by non-Fourier heat conduction with increased peak stress.
The influence on the stress increases with the thermal relaxation time.
Abstract: The shielding ability of a shielding cavity with an
aperture will be greatly degraded at resonance frequencies, and the
resonance modes and frequencies are affected by aperture resonances
and aperture-cavity coupling, which are closely related with aperture
sizes. The equivalent circuit method and numerical method of
Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) are used to analyze the effects of
aperture resonances and aperture-cavity coupling on the
electromagnetic resonances of a cavity with an aperture in this paper.
Both analytical and numerical results show that the resonance modes
of a shielding cavity with an aperture consist of cavity resonance
modes and aperture resonance modes, and the resonance frequencies
will shift with the change of the aperture sizes because of the aperture
resonances and aperture-cavity coupling. Variation rules of
electromagnetic resonances with aperture sizes for a cavity with an
aperture are given, which will be useful for design of shielding
cavities.
Abstract: Plate is one of the popular structural elements used in a wide range of industries and structures. They may be subjected to blast loads during explosion events, missile attacks or aircraft attacks. This study is to investigate dynamic responses of the rectangular plate subjected to explosive loads. The effects of material properties and plate thickness on responses of the plate are to be investigated. The compressive pressure is applied to the surface of the plate. Different amounts of thickness in the range from 1mm to 30mm are considered for the plate to evaluate the changes in responses of the plate with respect to plate thickness. Two different properties are considered for the steel. First, the analysis is performed by considering only the elastic-plastic properties for the steel plate. Later on damping is considered to investigate its effects on the responses of the plate. To do analysis, numerical method using a finite element based package ABAQUS is applied. Finally, dynamic responses and graphs showing the relation between maximum displacement of the plate and aim parameters are provided.
Abstract: During welding or flame cutting of metals, the
prediction of heat affected zone (HAZ) is critical. There is need to
develop a simple mathematical model to calculate the temperature
variation in HAZ and derivative analysis can be used for this purpose.
This study presents analytical solution for heat transfer through
conduction in mild steel plate. The homogeneous and nonhomogeneous
boundary conditions are single variables. The full field
analytical solutions of temperature measurement, subjected to local
heating source, are derived first by method of separation of variables
followed with the experimental visualization using infrared imaging.
Based on the present work, it is suggested that appropriate heat input
characteristics controls the temperature distribution in and around
HAZ.
Abstract: In this paper, the specific sound Transmission Loss
(TL) of the Laminated Composite Plate (LCP) with different material
properties in each layer is investigated. The numerical method to
obtain the TL of the LCP is proposed by using elastic plate theory. The
transfer matrix approach is novelty presented for computational
efficiency in solving the numerous layers of dynamic stiffness matrix
(D-matrix) of the LCP. Besides the numerical simulations for
calculating the TL of the LCP, the material properties inverse method
is presented for the design of a laminated composite plate analogous to
a metallic plate with a specified TL. As a result, it demonstrates that
the proposed computational algorithm exhibits high efficiency with a
small number of iterations for achieving the goal. This method can be
effectively employed to design and develop tailor-made materials for
various applications.
Abstract: The present study is concerned with the problem of determining the shape of the free surface flow in a hydraulic channel which has an uneven bottom. For the mathematical formulation of the problem, the fluid of the two-dimensional irrotational steady flow in water is assumed inviscid and incompressible. The solutions of the nonlinear problem are obtained by using the usual conformal mapping theory and Hilbert’s technique. An experimental study, for comparing the obtained results, has been conducted in a hydraulic channel (subcritical regime and supercritical regime).
Abstract: Complex lifting entry was selected for precise landing
performance during the Mars Science Laboratory entry. This study
aims to develop the three-dimensional numerical method for precise
computation and the surface panel method for rapid engineering
prediction. Detailed flow field analysis for Mars exploration mission
was performed by carrying on a series of fully three-dimensional
Navier-Stokes computations. The static aerodynamic performance was
then discussed, including the surface pressure, lift and drag coefficient,
lift-to-drag ratio with the numerical and engineering method.
Computation results shown that the shock layer is thin because of
lower effective specific heat ratio, and that calculated results from both
methods agree well with each other, and is consistent with the
reference data. Aerodynamic performance analysis shows that CG
location determines trim characteristics and pitch stability, and certain
radially and axially shift of the CG location can alter the capsule lifting
entry performance, which is of vital significance for the aerodynamic
configuration design and inner instrument layout of the Mars entry
capsule.

the behavior of the data. This analysis was determined considering
the specific business circumstances of a company in the sector of

adequate stock of the products required by the company to provide its
services, helping the company reduce its service time, increase the
client satisfaction rate, reduce stock which has not been in rotation
for a long time, code its inventory, and plan reorder points for the
replenishment of stock.
Abstract: We evaluate the performance of a numerical method
for global optimization of expensive functions. The method is using a
response surface to guide the search for the global optimum. This
metamodel could be based on radial basis functions, kriging, or a
combination of different models. We discuss how to set the cyclic
parameters of the optimization method to get a balance between local
and global search. We also discuss the eventual problem with Runge
oscillations in the response surface.
