Abstract: The migration-environment nexus has gained increased interest from the social research field over the last years. While straightly connected to human security issues, this theme has pervaded through the media to the public sphere. Therefore, it is important to observe how did the discussions over environmentally induced migrations develop from the scientific basis to the media attention, passing through some political voices, and in which ways might these messages be interpreted within the broader public discourses. To achieve this purpose, the analysis of the press entries between 2004 and 2010 in three of the main Portuguese newspapers shall be presented, specially reflecting upon the events, protagonists, topics, geographical attributions and terms/expressions used to define those who migrate due to environmental degradation or disasters.
Abstract: This paper explores the use of project work in a
content-based instruction in a Rajabhat University, a teacher college,
where student teachers are instructed to perform teaching roles
mainly in basic education level. Its aim is to link theory to practice,
and to help language teachers maximize the full potential of project
work for genuine communication and give real meaning to writing
activity. Two research questions are formulated to guide this study:
a) What is the academic achievement of the students- writing skill
against the 70% attainment target after the use of project to enhance
the skill? and b) To what degree is the development of the students-
writing skills during the course of project to enhance the skill? The
sample of the study comprised of 38 fourth-year English major
students. The data was collected by means of achievement test,
student writing works, and project diary. The scores in the summative
achievement test were analyzed by mean score, standard deviation,
and t-test. Project diary serves as students- record of the language
acquired during the project. List of structures and vocabulary noted in
the diary has shown students- ability to attend to, recognize, and
focus on meaningful patterns of language forms.
Abstract: The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling
Problem (RCPSP) is concerned with single-item or small batch
production where limited resources have to be allocated to dependent
activities over time. Over the past few decades, a lot of work has
been made with the use of optimal solution procedures for this basic
problem type and its extensions. Brucker and Knust[1] discuss, how
timetabling problems can be modeled as a RCPSP. Authors discuss
high school timetabling and university course timetabling problem as
an example. We have formulated two mathematical formulations of
course timetabling problem in a new way which are the prototype of
single-mode RCPSP. Our focus is to show, how course timetabling
problem can be transformed into RCPSP. We solve this
transformation model with genetic algorithm.
Abstract: By analyzing the sources of energy and power
loss in PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controlled drivers of
water electrolysis cells, it is possible to reduce the power
dissipation and enhance the efficiency of such hydrogen
production units. A PWM controlled power driver is based on
a semiconductor switching element where its power
dissipation might be a remarkable fraction of the total power
demand of an electrolysis system. Power dissipation in a
semiconductor switching element is related to many different
parameters which could be fitted into two main categories:
switching losses and conduction losses. Conduction losses are
directly related to the built, structure and capabilities of a
switching device itself and indeed the conditions in which the
element is handling the switching application such as voltage,
current, temperature and of course the fabrication technology.
On the other hand, switching losses have some other
influencing variables other than the mentioned such as control
system, switching method and power electronics circuitry of
the PWM power driver. By analyzings the characteristics of
recently developed power switching transistors from different
families of Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT), Metal Oxide
Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET) and
Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT), some
recommendations are made in this paper which are able to
lead to achieve higher hydrogen production efficiency by
utilizing PWM controlled water electrolysis cells.
Abstract: A virtual collaborative classroom was created at East Carolina University, using videoconference technology via regular internet to bring students from 18 different countries, 2 at a time, to the ECU classroom in real time to learn about each other-s culture. Students from two countries are partnered one on one, they meet for 4-5 weeks, and submit a joint paper. Then the same process is repeated for two other countries. Lectures and student discussions are managed with pre-determined topics and questions. Classes are conducted in English and reading assignments are placed on the website. Administratively all partners are independent, students pay fees and get credits at their home institution. Familiarity with technology, knowledge in cultural understanding and attitude change were assessed, only attitude changes are reported in this paper. After taking this course, all students stated their comfort level in working with, and their desire to interact with, culturally different others grew stronger and their xenophobia and isolationist attitudes decreased.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to consider the
introduction of online courses to replace the current classroom-based
staff training. The current training is practical, and must be
completed before access to the financial computer system is
authorized. The long term objective is to measure the efficacy,
effectiveness and efficiency of the training, and to establish whether
a transfer of knowledge back to the workplace has occurred. This
paper begins with an overview explaining the importance of staff
training in an evolving, competitive business environment and
defines the problem facing this particular organization. A summary
of the literature review is followed by a brief discussion of the
research methodology and objective. The implementation of the
alpha version of the online course is then described. This paper may
be of interest to those seeking insights into, or new theory regarding,
practical interventions of online learning in the real world.
Abstract: The influence of human activities produced by dams
along the river beds is minor, but the location of accumulation of
water directly influences the hydrological regime. The most
important effect of the influence of damming on the way water flows
decreases the frequency of floods. The water rate controls the water
flow of the dams. These natural reservoirs become dysfunctional and,
as a result, a new distribution of flow in the downstream sector,
where maximum flow is, brings about, in this case, higher values. In
addition to fishing, middle and lower courses of rivers located by
accumulation also have a role in mitigating flood waves, thus
providing flood protection. The Vaslui also ensures a good part of the
needs of the town water supply. The most important lake is Solesti,
close to the Vaslui River, opened in 1974. A hydrological regime of
accumulation is related to an anthropogenic and natural drainage
system. The design conditions and their manoeuvres drain or fill the
water courses.
Abstract: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are increasing in importance everyday, especially since the 90’s (last decade of birth for the Millennials generation). While social interactions involving the Millennials generation have been studied, a lack of investigation remains regarding the use of the ICT by this generation as well as the impact on outcomes in education and professional training. Observing and interviewing students preparing a MSc, we aimed at characterizing the interaction students-ICT during the courses. We found that up to 50% of the students (mainly female) could use ICT during courses at a rate of 0.84 occurrence/minutes for some of them, and they thought this involvement did not disturb learning, even was helpful. As recent researches show that multitasking leads people think they are much better than they actually are, further observations with assessments are needed to conclude whether or not the use ICT by students during the courses is a real strength.
Abstract: When the foundations of structures under cyclic
loading with amplitudes less than their permissible load, the concern exists often for the amount of uniform and non-uniform settlement of
such structures. Storage tank foundations with numerous filling and discharging and railways ballast course under repeating
transportation loads are examples of such conditions. This paper
deals with the effects of using the new generation of reinforcements,
Grid-Anchor, for the purpose of reducing the permanent settlement
of these foundations under the influence of different proportions of
the ultimate load. Other items such as the type and the number of
reinforcements as well as the number of loading cycles are studied numerically. Numerical models were made using the Plaxis3D
Tunnel finite element code. The results show that by using gridanchor
and increasing the number of their layers in the same
proportion as that of the cyclic load being applied, the amount of
permanent settlement decreases up to 42% relative to unreinforced
condition depends on the number of reinforcement layers and percent
of applied load and the number of loading cycles to reach a constant
value of dimensionless settlement decreases up to 20% relative to
unreinforced condition.
Abstract: To evaluate the ability to predict xerostomia after
radiotherapy, we constructed and compared neural network and
logistic regression models. In this study, 61 patients who completed a
questionnaire about their quality of life (QoL) before and after a full
course of radiation therapy were included. Based on this questionnaire,
some statistical data about the condition of the patients’ salivary
glands were obtained, and these subjects were included as the inputs of
the neural network and logistic regression models in order to predict
the probability of xerostomia. Seven variables were then selected from
the statistical data according to Cramer’s V and point-biserial
correlation values and were trained by each model to obtain the
respective outputs which were 0.88 and 0.89 for AUC, 9.20 and 7.65
for SSE, and 13.7% and 19.0% for MAPE, respectively. These
parameters demonstrate that both neural network and logistic
regression methods are effective for predicting conditions of parotid
glands.
Abstract: This study demonstrates the use of Class F fly ash in
combination with lime or lime kiln dust in the full depth reclamation
(FDR) of asphalt pavements. FDR, in the context of this paper, is a
process of pulverizing a predetermined amount of flexible pavement
that is structurally deficient, blending it with chemical additives and
water, and compacting it in place to construct a new stabilized base
course. Test sections of two structurally deficient asphalt pavements
were reclaimed using Class F fly ash in combination with lime and
lime kiln dust. In addition, control sections were constructed using
cement, cement and emulsion, lime kiln dust and emulsion, and mill
and fill. The service performance and structural behavior of the FDR
pavement test sections were monitored to determine how the fly ash
sections compared to other more traditional pavement rehabilitation
techniques. Service performance and structural behavior were
determined with the use of sensors embedded in the road and Falling
Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests. Monitoring results of the FWD
tests conducted up to 2 years after reclamation show that the cement,
fly ash+LKD, and fly ash+lime sections exhibited two year resilient
modulus values comparable to open graded cement stabilized
aggregates (more than 750 ksi). The cement treatment resulted in a
significant increase in resilient modulus within 3 weeks of
construction and beyond this curing time, the stiffness increase was
slow. On the other hand, the fly ash+LKD and fly ash+lime test
sections indicated slower shorter-term increase in stiffness. The fly
ash+LKD and fly ash+lime section average resilient modulus values
at two years after construction were in excess of 800 ksi. Additional
longer-term testing data will be available from ongoing pavement
performance and environmental condition data collection at the two
pavement sites.
Abstract: Current research has explored the impact of
instructional immediacy, defined as those behaviors that help build
close relationships or feelings of closeness, both on cognition and
motivation in the traditional classroom and online classroom;
however, online courses continue to suffer from higher dropout rates.
Based on Albert Bandura-s Social Cognitive Theory, four primary
relationships or interactions in an online course will be explored in
light of how they can provide immediacy thereby reducing student
attrition and improving cognitive learning. The four relationships are
teacher-student, student-student, and student-content, and studentcomputer.
Results of a study conducted with inservice teachers
completing a 14-week online professional development technology
course will be examined to demonstrate immediacy strategies that
improve cognitive learning and reduce student attrition. Results of
the study reveal that students can be motivated through various
interactions and instructional immediacy behaviors which lead to
higher completion rates, improved self-efficacy, and cognitive
learning.
Abstract: The number of framework conceived for e-learning
constantly increase, unfortunately the creators of learning materials
and educational institutions engaged in e-formation adopt a
“proprietor" approach, where the developed products (courses,
activities, exercises, etc.) can be exploited only in the framework
where they were conceived, their uses in the other learning
environments requires a greedy adaptation in terms of time and
effort. Each one proposes courses whose organization, contents,
modes of interaction and presentations are unique for all learners,
unfortunately the latter are heterogeneous and are not interested by
the same information, but only by services or documents adapted to
their needs. Currently the new tendency for the framework
conceived for e-learning, is the interoperability of learning materials,
several standards exist (DCMI (Dublin Core Metadata Initiative)[2],
LOM (Learning Objects Meta data)[1], SCORM (Shareable Content
Object Reference Model)[6][7][8], ARIADNE (Alliance of Remote
Instructional Authoring and Distribution Networks for Europe)[9],
CANCORE (Canadian Core Learning Resource Metadata
Application Profiles)[3]), they converge all to the idea of learning
objects. They are also interested in the adaptation of the learning
materials according to the learners- profile. This article proposes an
approach for the composition of courses adapted to the various
profiles (knowledge, preferences, objectives) of learners, based on
two ontologies (domain to teach and educational) and the learning
objects.
Abstract: The production of a plant can be measured in terms of
seeds. The generation of seeds plays a critical role in our social and
daily life. The fruit production which generates seeds, depends on the
various parameters of the plant, such as shoot length, leaf number,
root length, root number, etc When the plant is growing, some leaves
may be lost and some new leaves may appear. It is very difficult to
use the number of leaves of the tree to calculate the growth of the
plant.. It is also cumbersome to measure the number of roots and
length of growth of root in several time instances continuously after
certain initial period of time, because roots grow deeper and deeper
under ground in course of time. On the contrary, the shoot length of
the tree grows in course of time which can be measured in different
time instances. So the growth of the plant can be measured using the
data of shoot length which are measured at different time instances
after plantation. The environmental parameters like temperature, rain
fall, humidity and pollution are also play some role in production of
yield. The soil, crop and distance management are taken care to
produce maximum amount of yields of plant. The data of the growth
of shoot length of some mustard plant at the initial stage (7,14,21 &
28 days after plantation) is available from the statistical survey by a
group of scientists under the supervision of Prof. Dilip De. In this
paper, initial shoot length of Ken( one type of mustard plant) has
been used as an initial data. The statistical models, the methods of
fuzzy logic and neural network have been tested on this mustard
plant and based on error analysis (calculation of average error) that
model with minimum error has been selected and can be used for the
assessment of shoot length at maturity. Finally, all these methods
have been tested with other type of mustard plants and the particular
soft computing model with the minimum error of all types has been
selected for calculating the predicted data of growth of shoot length.
The shoot length at the stage of maturity of all types of mustard
plants has been calculated using the statistical method on the
predicted data of shoot length.
Abstract: In order to provide and maintain effective pedagogy for the burgeoning virtual reality community, it is vital to have trained faculty in the institutions of higher education who will teach these courses and be able to make full use of their academic knowledge and expertise. As the number of online courses continues to grow, there is a need for these institutions to establish mentoring programs that will support the novice online instructor. The environment in which this takes place and the factors that ensure its success are critical to the adoption of the new instructional delivery format taught by both seasoned educators and adjunct instructors. Effective one-on-one mentoring promotes a professional, compassionate and collegial faculty who will provide a consistent and rigorous academic program for students online.
Abstract: The development of competences and practical
capacities of students is getting an important incidence into the
guidelines of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The
methodology applied in this work is based on the education through
directed resolution of practical cases. All cases are related to
professional tasks that the students will have to develop in their
future career. The method is intended to form the necessary
competences of students of the Marine Engineering and Maritime
Transport Degree in the matter of “Physics".
The experience was applied in the course of 2011/2012. Students
were grouped, and a practical task was assigned to them, that should
be developed and solved within the team. The aim was to realize
students learning by three ways: their own knowledge, the
contribution of their teammates and the teacher's direction. The
results of the evaluation were compared with those obtained
previously by the traditional teaching method.
Abstract: Development of cities and villages, agricultural farms
and industrial regions in abutment and/or in the course of streams and
rivers or in prone flood lands has been caused more notations in
hydrology problems and city planning topics. In order to protection
of cities against of flood damages, embankment construction is a
desired and scientific method. The cities that located in arid zones
may damage by floods periodically. Zavvareh city in Ardestan
township(Isfahan province) with 7704 people located in Ardestan
plain that has been damaged by floods that have flowed from
dominant mountainous watersheds in past years with regard to return
period. In this study, according to flowed floods toward Zavvareh
city, was attempt to plan suitable hydraulic structures such as canals,
bridges and collectors in order to collection, conduction and
depletion of city surface runoff.
Abstract: The complexity of teaching English in higher
institutions by non-native speakers within a second/foreign language
setting has created continuous discussions and research about
teaching approaches and teaching practises, professional identities
and challenges. In addition, there is a growing awareness that
teaching English within discipline-specific contexts adds up to the
existing complexity. This awareness leads to reassessments,
discussions and suggestions on course design and content and
teaching approaches and techniques. In meeting expectations
teaching at a university specified in a particular discipline such as
engineering, English language educators are not only required to
teach students to be able to communicate in English effectively but
also to teach soft skills such as problem solving skills. This paper is
part of a research conducted to investigate how English language
educators negotiate with the complexities of teaching problem
solving skills through English language teaching at a technical
university. This paper reports the way an English language educator
identified himself and the way he approached his teaching in this
institutional context.
