Abstract: One area of special importance for the surface-level study of heat exchangers is tubes with internal micro-fins (< 0.5 mm tall). Micro-finned surfaces are a kind of extended solid surface in which energy is exchanged with water that acts as the source or sink of energy. Significant performance gains are possible for either shell, tube, or double pipe heat exchangers if the best surfaces are identified. The parametric studies of micro-finned tubes that have appeared in the literature left some key parameters unexplored. Specifically, they ignored three-dimensional (3D) micro-fin configurations, conduction heat transfer in the fins, and conduction in the solid surface below the micro-fins. Thus, this study aimed at implementing a parametric study of 3D micro-finned tubes that considered micro-fine height and discontinuity features. A 3D conductive and convective heat-transfer simulation through coupled solid and periodic fluid domains is applied in a commercial package, ANSYS Fluent 19.1. The simulation is steady-state with turbulent water flow cooling the inner wall of a tube with micro-fins. The simulation utilizes a constant and uniform temperature on the tube outer wall. Performance is mapped for 18 different simulation cases, including a smooth tube using a realizable k-ε turbulence model at a Reynolds number of 48,928. Results compared the performance of 3D tubes with results for the similar two-dimensional (2D) one. Results showed that the micro-fine height has a greater impact on performance factors than discontinuity features in 3D micro-fin tubes. A transformed 3D micro-fin tube can enhance heat transfer, and pressure drops up to 21% and 56% compared to a 2D one, respectfully.
Abstract: A numerical approach of the effectiveness of numerous
parameters on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) natural convection
heat and mass transfer problem of a dusty micropolar fluid in
a non-Darcy porous regime is prepared in the current paper.
In addition, a convective boundary condition is scrutinized into
the micropolar dusty fluid model. The governing boundary layer
equations are converted utilizing similarity transformations to a
system of dimensionless equations to be convenient for numerical
treatment. The resulting equations for fluid phase and dust phases
of momentum, angular momentum, energy, and concentration with
the appropriate boundary conditions are solved numerically applying
the Runge-Kutta method of fourth-order. In accordance with the
numerical study, it is obtained that the magnitude of the velocity
of both fluid phase and particle phase reduces with an increasing
magnetic parameter, the mass concentration of the dust particles, and
Forchheimer number. While rises due to an increment in convective
parameter and Darcy number. Also, the results refer that high values
of the magnetic parameter, convective parameter, and Forchheimer
number support the temperature distributions. However, deterioration
occurs as the mass concentration of the dust particles and Darcy
number increases. The angular velocity behavior is described by
progress when studying the effect of the magnetic parameter and
microrotation parameter.
Abstract: Radiant heating systems work fundamentally differently from air systems by taking advantage of both radiant and convective heat transfer to remove space heating load. There are rare studies on differences of heating systems between all-air system and radiant floor system. This paper uses the method of simulation based on state-space to calculate the indoor temperature and wall temperature of each system and shows how the dynamic heat transfer in rooms conditioned by a radiant system is different from an air system. Then this paper analyses the changes of indoor temperature of these two systems, finding out the differences between all-air heating system and radiant floor heating system to help the designer choose a more suitable heating system.
Abstract: The purification of brackish seawater becomes a necessity and not a choice against demographic and industrial growth especially in third world countries. Two models can be used in this work: simple solar still and simple solar still coupled with a heat pump. In this research, the productivity of water by Simple Solar Distiller (SSD) and Simple Solar Distiller Hybrid Heat Pump (SSDHP) was determined by the orientation, the use of heat pump, the simple or double glass cover. The productivity can exceed 1.2 L/m²h for the SSDHP and 0.5 L/m²h for SSD model. The result of the global efficiency is determined for two models SSD and SSDHP give respectively 30%, 50%. The internal efficiency attained 35% for SSD and 60% of the SSDHP models. Convective heat coefficient can be determined by attained 2.5 W/m²°C and 0.5 W/m²°C respectively for SSDHP and SSD models.
Abstract: The convective and radiative heat transfer performance and entropy generation on forced convection through a direct absorption solar collector (DASC) is investigated numerically. Four different fluids, including Cu-water nanofluid, Al2O3-waternanofluid, TiO2-waternanofluid, and pure water are used as the working fluid. Entropy production has been taken into account in addition to the collector efficiency and heat transfer enhancement. Penalty finite element method with Galerkin’s weighted residual technique is used to solve the governing non-linear partial differential equations. Numerical simulations are performed for the variation of mass flow rate. The outcomes are presented in the form of isotherms, average output temperature, the average Nusselt number, collector efficiency, average entropy generation, and Bejan number. The results present that the rate of heat transfer and collector efficiency enhance significantly for raising the values of m up to a certain range.
Abstract: This paper copes with the numerical simulation for convective heat transfer in the stator disk of an axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) electrical machine. Overheating is one of the main issues in the design of AFMPs, which mainly occurs in the stator disk, so that it needs to be prevented. A rotor-stator configuration with 16 magnets at the periphery of the rotor is considered. Air is allowed to flow through openings in the rotor disk and channels being formed between the magnets and in the gap region between the magnets and the stator surface. The rotating channels between the magnets act as a driving force for the air flow. The significant non-dimensional parameters are the rotational Reynolds number, the gap size ratio, the magnet thickness ratio, and the magnet angle ratio. The goal is to find correlations for the Nusselt number on the stator disk according to these non-dimensional numbers. Therefore, CFD simulations have been performed with the multiple reference frame (MRF) technique to model the rotary motion of the rotor and the flow around and inside the machine. A minimization method is introduced by a pattern-search algorithm to find the appropriate values of the reference temperature. It is found that the correlations are fast, robust and is capable of predicting the stator heat transfer with a good accuracy. The results reveal that the magnet angle ratio diminishes the stator heat transfer, whereas the rotational Reynolds number and the magnet thickness ratio improve the convective heat transfer. On the other hand, there a certain gap size ratio at which the stator heat transfer reaches a maximum.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation of electrically driven flow for enhancing convective heat transfer in a channel flow. This study focuses on the electrode arrangements, number of electrode and electrical voltage on Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) and effect of airflow driven on solid sample surface. The inlet airflow and inlet temperature are 0.35 m/s and 60 oC, respectively. High electrical voltage is tested in the range of 0-30 kV and number of electrode is tested in the range of 1-5. The numerical results show that electric field intensity is depended on electrical voltage and number of electrode. Increasing number of electrodes is increased shear flow, so swirling flow is increased. The swirling flows from aligned and staggered arrangements are affecting within the solid sample. When electrical voltage is increased, temperature distribution and convective heat transfer on the solid sample are significantly increased due to the electric force much stronger.
Abstract: Since graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) is a promising material due to desirable thermal properties, this paper is related to the thermophysical and heat transfer performance of covalently functionalized GNP-based water/ethylene glycol nanofluid through an annular channel. After experimentally measuring thermophysical properties of prepared samples, a computational fluid dynamics study has been carried out to examine the heat transfer and pressure drop of well-dispersed and stabilized nanofluids. The effect of concentration of GNP and Reynolds number at constant wall temperature boundary condition under turbulent flow regime on convective heat transfer coefficient has been investigated. Based on the results, for different Reynolds numbers, the convective heat transfer coefficient of the prepared nanofluid is higher than that of the base fluid. Also, the enhancement of convective heat transfer coefficient and thermal conductivity increase with the increase of GNP concentration in base-fluid. Based on the results of this investigation, there is a significant enhancement on the heat transfer rate associated with loading well-dispersed GNP in base-fluid.
Abstract: Numerical investigation into convective heat transfer of CuO-Water based nanofluid in a pipe with return bend under laminar flow conditions has been done. The impacts of Reynolds number and the volume concentration of nanoparticles on the flow and the convective heat transfer behaviour are investigated. The results indicate that the increase in Reynolds number leads to the enhancement of average Nusselt number, and the increase in specific heat in the presence of the nanofluid results in improvement in heat transfer. Also, the presence of the secondary flow in the curve plays a key role in increasing the average Nusselt number and it appears higher than the inlet and outlet tubes. However, the pressure drop curve increases significantly in the tubes with the increase in nanoparticles concentration.
Abstract: In the present article, we investigate experimental
laminar forced convective heat transfer specifications of TiO2/water
nanofluids through conduits with different cross sections. we check
the effects of different parameters such as cross sectional shape,
Reynolds number and concentration of nanoparticles in stable
suspension on increasing convective heat transfer by designing and
assembling of an experimental apparatus. The results demonstrate
adding a little amount of nanoparticles to the base fluid, improves
heat transfer behavior in conduits. Moreover, conduit with circular
cross-section has better performance compared to the square and
triangular cross sections. However, conduits with square and
triangular cross sections have more relative heat transfer enchantment
than conduit with circular cross section.

Abstract: The new design of heat exchangers utilizing an
annular distributor opens a new gateway for realizing higher energy
optimization. To realize this goal, graphene nanoplatelet-based water
nanofluids with promising thermophysical properties were
synthesized in the presence of covalent and noncovalent
functionalization. Thermal conductivity, density, viscosity and
specific heat capacity were investigated and employed as a raw data
for ANSYS-Fluent to be used in two-phase approach. After
validation of obtained results by analytical equations, two special
parameters of convective heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop
were investigated. The study followed by studying other heat transfer
parameters of annular pass in the presence of graphene nanopletelesbased
water nanofluids at different weight concentrations, input
powers and temperatures. As a result, heat transfer performance and
friction loss are predicted for both synthesized nanofluids.
Abstract: In the present study, a numerical approach to describe the pyrolysis of a single solid particle of wood is used to study the influence of various conditions such as particle size, heat transfer coefficient, reactor temperature and heating rate. The influence of these parameters in the change of the duration of the pyrolysis cycle was studied. Mathematical modeling was employed to simulate the heat, mass transfer, and kinetic processes inside the reactor. The evolutions of the mass loss as well as the evolution of temperature inside the thick piece are investigated numerically. The elaborated model was also employed to study the effect of the reactor temperature and the rate of heating on the change of the temperature and the local loss of the mass inside the piece of wood. The obtained results are in good agreement with the experimental data available in the literature.
Abstract: The objective of the paper is a numerical study of heat
transfer between perforated metal plates and the surrounding air
flows. Different perforation structures can nowadays be found in
various industrial products. Besides improving the mechanical
properties, the perforations can intensify the heat transfer as well. The
heat transfer coefficient depends on a wide range of parameters such
as type of perforation, size, shape, flow properties of the surrounding
air etc. The paper was focused on three different perforation
structures which have been investigated from the point of the view of
the production in the previous studies. To determine the heat
coefficients and the Nusselt numbers, the numerical simulation
approach was adopted. The calculations were performed using the
OpenFOAM software. The three-dimensional, unstable, turbulent and
incompressible air flow around the perforated surface metal plate was
considered.
Abstract: This work consists of a numerical simulation of
convective heat transfer in a vertical plane channel filled with a heat
generating porous medium, in the absence of local thermal
equilibrium. The walls are maintained to a constant temperature and
the inlet velocity is uniform. The dynamic range is described by the
Darcy-Brinkman model and the thermal field by two energy
equations model. A dimensionless formulation is developed for
performing a parametric study based on certain dimensionless groups
such as, the Biot interstitial number, the thermal conductivity ratio
and the volumetric heat generation, q '''. The governing equations are
solved using the finite volume method, gave rise to a multitude of
results concerning in particular the thermal field in the porous
channel and the existence or not of the local thermal equilibrium.
Abstract: The convective heat and mass transfer in nanofluid
flow through a porous media due to a permeable stretching sheet with
magnetic field, viscous dissipation, chemical reaction and Soret
effects are numerically investigated. Two types of nanofluids, namely
Cu-water and Ag-water were studied. The governing boundary layer
equations are formulated and reduced to a set of ordinary differential
equations using similarity transformations and then solved
numerically using the Keller box method. Numerical results are
obtained for the skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and
Sherwood number as well as for the velocity, temperature and
concentration profiles for selected values of the governing
parameters. Excellent validation of the present numerical results has
been achieved with the earlier linearly stretching sheet problems in
the literature.
Abstract: In the present study, mixed convection in a horizontal
rectangular duct using Al2O3 is numerically investigated. The effects
of different Rayleigh number, Reynolds number and radiation on
flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied in detail. This study
covers Rayleigh number in the range of 2 × 10^6 ≤ Ra ≤ 2 × 10^7 and
Reynolds number in the range of 100 ≤ Re ≤ 1100. Results reveal that
the Nusselt number increases as Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers
increase. It is also found that the dimensionless temperature
distribution increases as Rayleigh number increases.
Abstract: Solar air heater is a type of heat exchanger which
transforms solar radiation into heat energy. The thermal performance
of conventional solar air heater has been found to be poor because of
the low convective heat transfer coefficient from the absorber plate to
the air. It is attributed to the formation of a very thin boundary layer
at the absorber plate surface commonly known as viscous sub-layer.
Thermal efficiency of solar air heater can be improved by providing
the artificial roughness on absorber plate is the most efficient
technique. In this paper an attempt is made to provide artificial
roughness by incorporating inclined multiple V-ribs in the underside
of the absorber plate. 60˚V – ribs are arranged inclined to the
direction of air flow. Performance of collector estimated theoretically
and experimentally. Results of the investigation reveal that thermal
efficiency of collector with multiple V-ribs increased by 14%.
Abstract: Heat transfer from flat tube is studied numerically. Reynolds number is defined base on equivalent circular tube which is varied in range of 100 to 300. In these range of Reynolds number flow is considered to be laminar, unsteady, and incompressible. Equations are solved by using finite volume method. Results show that increasing l/D from 1 to 2 has insignificant effect on heat transfer and Nusselt number of flat tube is slightly lower than circular tube. However, thermal-hydraulic performance of flat tube is up to 2.7 times greater than circular tube.
Abstract: In this paper the influence of a vertical plate’s thermal capacity is numerically investigated in order to evaluate the evolution of the thermal boundary layer structure, as well as the convective heat transfer coefficient and the velocity and temperature profiles. Whereas the heat flux of the heated vertical plate is evaluated under time depending boundary conditions. The main important feature of this problem is the unsteadiness of the physical phenomena. A 2D CFD model is developed with the Ansys Fluent 14.0 environment and is validated using unsteady data obtained for plasterboard studied under a dynamic temperature evolution. All the phenomena produced in the vicinity of the thermal conductive vertical plate (plasterboard) are analyzed and discussed. This work is the first stage of a holistic research on transient free convection that aims, in the future, to study the natural convection in the vicinity of a vertical plate containing Phase Change Materials (PCM).
