Abstract: The aim of this paper to characterize a larger set of
wavelet functions for implementation in a still image compression
system using SPIHT algorithm. This paper discusses important
features of wavelet functions and filters used in sub band coding to
convert image into wavelet coefficients in MATLAB. Image quality
is measured objectively using peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and
its variation with bit rate (bpp). The effect of different parameters is
studied on different wavelet functions. Our results provide a good
reference for application designers of wavelet based coder.
Abstract: Considering a reservoir with periodic states and
different cost functions with penalty, its release rules can be
modeled as a periodic Markov decision process (PMDP). First,
we prove that policy- iteration algorithm also works for the
PMDP. Then, with policy- iteration algorithm, we obtain the
optimal policies for a special aperiodic reservoir model with
two cost functions under large penalty and give a discussion
when the penalty is small.
Abstract: This paper discusses EM algorithm and Bootstrap
approach combination applied for the improvement of the satellite
image fusion process. This novel satellite image fusion method based
on estimation theory EM algorithm and reinforced by Bootstrap
approach was successfully implemented and tested. The sensor
images are firstly split by a Bayesian segmentation method to
determine a joint region map for the fused image. Then, we use the
EM algorithm in conjunction with the Bootstrap approach to develop
the bootstrap EM fusion algorithm, hence producing the fused
targeted image. We proposed in this research to estimate the
statistical parameters from some iterative equations of the EM
algorithm relying on a reference of representative Bootstrap samples
of images. Sizes of those samples are determined from a new
criterion called 'hybrid criterion'. Consequently, the obtained results
of our work show that using the Bootstrap EM (BEM) in image
fusion improve performances of estimated parameters which involve
amelioration of the fused image quality; and reduce the computing
time during the fusion process.
Abstract: In this paper, we use nonlinear system identification method to predict and detect process fault of a cement rotary kiln. After selecting proper inputs and output, an input-output model is identified for the plant. To identify the various operation points in the
kiln, Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy (LLNF) model is used. This model is trained by LOLIMOT algorithm which is an incremental treestructure
algorithm. Then, by using this method, we obtained 3
distinct models for the normal and faulty situations in the kiln. One of the models is for normal condition of the kiln with 15 minutes
prediction horizon. The other two models are for the two faulty situations in the kiln with 7 minutes prediction horizon are presented.
At the end, we detect these faults in validation data. The data collected from White Saveh Cement Company is used for in this study.
Abstract: This study presents an exact general solution for
steady-state conductive heat transfer in cylindrical composite
laminates. Appropriate Fourier transformation has been obtained
using Sturm-Liouville theorem. Series coefficients are achieved by
solving a set of equations that related to thermal boundary conditions
at inner and outer of the cylinder, also related to temperature
continuity and heat flux continuity between each layer. The solution
of this set of equations are obtained using Thomas algorithm. In this
paper, the effect of fibers- angle on temperature distribution of
composite laminate is investigated under general boundary
conditions. Here, we show that the temperature distribution for any
composite laminates is between temperature distribution for
laminates with θ = 0° and θ = 90° .
Abstract: Distance protection of transmission lines including advanced flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices has been a very challenging task. FACTS devices of interest in this paper are static synchronous series compensators (SSSC) and unified power flow controller (UPFC). In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to detect and classify the fault and identify the fault position in a transmission line with respect to a FACTS device placed in the midpoint of the transmission line. Discrete wavelet transformation and wavelet entropy calculations are used to analyze during fault current and voltage signals of the compensated transmission line. The proposed algorithm is very simple and accurate in fault detection and classification. A variety of fault cases and simulation results are introduced to show the effectiveness of such algorithm.
Abstract: A neurofuzzy approach for a given set of input-output training data is proposed in two phases. Firstly, the data set is partitioned automatically into a set of clusters. Then a fuzzy if-then rule is extracted from each cluster to form a fuzzy rule base. Secondly, a fuzzy neural network is constructed accordingly and parameters are tuned to increase the precision of the fuzzy rule base. This network is able to learn and optimize the rule base of a Sugeno like Fuzzy inference system using Hybrid learning algorithm, which combines gradient descent, and least mean square algorithm. This proposed neurofuzzy system has the advantage of determining the number of rules automatically and also reduce the number of rules, decrease computational time, learns faster and consumes less memory. The authors also investigate that how neurofuzzy techniques can be applied in the area of control theory to design a fuzzy controller for linear and nonlinear dynamic systems modelling from a set of input/output data. The simulation analysis on a wide range of processes, to identify nonlinear components on-linely in a control system and a benchmark problem involving the prediction of a chaotic time series is carried out. Furthermore, the well-known examples of linear and nonlinear systems are also simulated under the Matlab/Simulink environment. The above combination is also illustrated in modeling the relationship between automobile trips and demographic factors.
Abstract: The reliability of distributed systems and computer
networks have been modeled by a probabilistic network or a graph G.
Computing the residual connectedness reliability (RCR), denoted by
R(G), under the node fault model is very useful, but is an NP-hard
problem. Since it may need exponential time of the network size to
compute the exact value of R(G), it is important to calculate its tight
approximate value, especially its lower bound, at a moderate
calculation time. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for
reliability lower bound of distributed systems with unreliable nodes.
We also applied our algorithm to several typical classes of networks
to evaluate the lower bounds and show the effectiveness of our
algorithm.
Abstract: Warranty is a powerful marketing tool for the
manufacturer and a good protection for both the manufacturer and the
customer. However, warranty always involves additional costs to the
manufacturer, which depend on product reliability characteristics and
warranty parameters. This paper presents an approach to optimisation
of warranty parameters for known product failure distribution to
reduce the warranty costs to the manufacturer while retaining the
promotional function of the warranty. Combination free replacement
and pro-rata warranty policy is chosen as a model and the length of
free replacement period and pro-rata policy period are varied, as well
as the coefficients that define the pro-rata cost function. Multiparametric
warranty optimisation is done by using genetic algorithm.
Obtained results are guideline for the manufacturer to choose the
warranty policy that minimises the costs and maximises the profit.
Abstract: The structure of retinal vessels is a prominent feature,
that reveals information on the state of disease that are reflected in
the form of measurable abnormalities in thickness and colour.
Vascular structures of retina, for implementation of clinical diabetic
retinopathy decision making system is presented in this paper.
Retinal Vascular structure is with thin blood vessel, whose accuracy
is highly dependent upon the vessel segmentation. In this paper the
blood vessel thickness is automatically detected using preprocessing
techniques and vessel segmentation algorithm. First the capture
image is binarized to get the blood vessel structure clearly, then it is
skeletonised to get the overall structure of all the terminal and
branching nodes of the blood vessels. By identifying the terminal
node and the branching points automatically, the main and branching
blood vessel thickness is estimated. Results are presented and
compared with those provided by clinical classification on 50 vessels
collected from Bejan Singh Eye hospital..
Abstract: This paper presents a Particle Swarm Optimization
(PSO) method for determining the optimal parameters of a first-order
controller for TCP/AQM system. The model TCP/AQM is described
by a second-order system with time delay. First, the analytical
approach, based on the D-decomposition method and Lemma of
Kharitonov, is used to determine the stabilizing regions of a firstorder
controller. Second, the optimal parameters of the controller are
obtained by the PSO algorithm. Finally, the proposed method is
implemented in the Network Simulator NS-2 and compared with the
PI controller.
Abstract: Automatic segmentation of skin lesions is the first step
towards development of a computer-aided diagnosis of melanoma.
Although numerous segmentation methods have been developed,
few studies have focused on determining the most discriminative
and effective color space for melanoma application. This paper
proposes a novel automatic segmentation algorithm using color space
analysis and clustering-based histogram thresholding, which is able to
determine the optimal color channel for segmentation of skin lesions.
To demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, it is tested on a set of 30
high resolution dermoscopy images and a comprehensive evaluation
of the results is provided, where borders manually drawn by four
dermatologists, are compared to automated borders detected by the
proposed algorithm. The evaluation is carried out by applying three
previously used metrics of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity and
a new metric of similarity. Through ROC analysis and ranking the
metrics, it is shown that the best results are obtained with the X and
XoYoR color channels which results in an accuracy of approximately
97%. The proposed method is also compared with two state-ofthe-
art skin lesion segmentation methods, which demonstrates the
effectiveness and superiority of the proposed segmentation method.

Abstract: Web usage mining algorithms have been widely
utilized for modeling user web navigation behavior. In this study we
advance a model for mining of user-s navigation pattern. The model
makes user model based on expectation-maximization (EM)
algorithm. An EM algorithm is used in statistics for finding maximum
likelihood estimates of parameters in probabilistic models, where the
model depends on unobserved latent variables. The experimental
results represent that by decreasing the number of clusters, the log
likelihood converges toward lower values and probability of the
largest cluster will be decreased while the number of the clusters
increases in each treatment.
Abstract: This article proposes an Ant Colony Optimization
(ACO) metaheuristic to minimize total makespan for scheduling a set
of jobs and assign workers for uniformly related parallel machines.
An algorithm based on ACO has been developed and coded on a
computer program Matlab®, to solve this problem. The paper
explains various steps to apply Ant Colony approach to the problem
of minimizing makespan for the worker assignment & jobs
scheduling problem in a parallel machine model and is aimed at
evaluating the strength of ACO as compared to other conventional
approaches. One data set containing 100 problems (12 Jobs, 03
machines and 10 workers) which is available on internet, has been
taken and solved through this ACO algorithm. The results of our
ACO based algorithm has shown drastically improved results,
especially, in terms of negligible computational effort of CPU, to
reach the optimal solution. In our case, the time taken to solve all 100
problems is even lesser than the average time taken to solve one
problem in the data set by other conventional approaches like GA
algorithm and SPT-A/LMC heuristics.
Abstract: Falls are the primary cause of accidents in people over
the age of 65, and frequently lead to serious injuries. Since the early
detection of falls is an important step to alert and protect the aging
population, a variety of research on detecting falls was carried out
including the use of accelerators, gyroscopes and tilt sensors. In
exiting studies, falls were detected using an accelerometer with
errors. In this study, the proposed method for detecting falls was to
use two accelerometers to reject wrong falls detection. As falls are
accompanied by the acceleration of gravity and rotational motion, the
falls in this study were detected by using the z-axial acceleration
differences between two sites. The falls were detected by calculating
the difference between the analyses of accelerometers placed on two
different positions on the chest of the subject. The parameters of the
maximum difference of accelerations (diff_Z) and the integration of
accelerations in a defined region (Sum_diff_Z) were used to form the
fall detection algorithm. The falls and the activities of daily living
(ADL) could be distinguished by using the proposed parameters
without errors in spite of the impact and the change in the positions
of the accelerometers. By comparing each of the axial accelerations,
the directions of falls and the condition of the subject afterwards
could be determined. In this study, by using two accelerometers
without errors attached to two sites to detect falls, the usefulness of
the proposed fall detection algorithm parameters, diff_Z and
Sum_diff_Z, were confirmed.
Abstract: ECG analysis method was developed using ROC
analysis of PVC detecting algorithm. ECG signal of MIT-BIH
arrhythmia database was analyzed by MATLAB. First of all, the
baseline was removed by median filter to preprocess the ECG signal.
R peaks were detected for ECG analysis method, and normal VCG
was extracted for VCG analysis method. Four PVC detecting
algorithm was analyzed by ROC curve, which parameters are
maximum amplitude of QRS complex, width of QRS complex, r-r
interval and geometric mean of VCG. To set cut-off value of
parameters, ROC curve was estimated by true-positive rate
(sensitivity) and false-positive rate. sensitivity and false negative rate
(specificity) of ROC curve calculated, and ECG was analyzed using
cut-off value which was estimated from ROC curve. As a result, PVC
detecting algorithm of VCG geometric mean have high availability,
and PVC could be detected more accurately with amplitude and width
of QRS complex.
Abstract: In this article an evolutionary technique has been used
for the solution of nonlinear Riccati differential equations of fractional order. In this method, genetic algorithm is used as a tool for
the competent global search method hybridized with active-set algorithm for efficient local search. The proposed method has been
successfully applied to solve the different forms of Riccati
differential equations. The strength of proposed method has in its
equal applicability for the integer order case, as well as, fractional
order case. Comparison of the method has been made with standard
numerical techniques as well as the analytic solutions. It is found
that the designed method can provide the solution to the equation
with better accuracy than its counterpart deterministic approaches.
Another advantage of the given approach is to provide results on
entire finite continuous domain unlike other numerical methods
which provide solutions only on discrete grid of points.
Abstract: In this paper, a robust digital image watermarking
scheme for copyright protection applications using the singular value
decomposition (SVD) is proposed. In this scheme, an entropy
masking model has been applied on the host image for the texture
segmentation. Moreover, the local luminance and textures of the host
image are considered for watermark embedding procedure to
increase the robustness of the watermarking scheme. In contrast to all
existing SVD-based watermarking systems that have been designed
to embed visual watermarks, our system uses a pseudo-random
sequence as a watermark. We have tested the performance of our
method using a wide variety of image processing attacks on different
test images. A comparison is made between the results of our
proposed algorithm with those of a wavelet-based method to
demonstrate the superior performance of our algorithm.
Abstract: In this paper, a Cooperative Multi-robot for Carrying
Targets (CMCT) algorithm is proposed. The multi-robot team
consists of three robots, one is a supervisor and the others are
workers for carrying boxes in a store of 100×100 m2. Each robot has
a self recharging mechanism. The CMCT minimizes robot-s worked
time for carrying many boxes during day by working in parallel. That
is, the supervisor detects the required variables in the same time
another robots work with previous variables. It works with
straightforward mechanical models by using simple cosine laws. It
detects the robot-s shortest path for reaching the target position
avoiding obstacles by using a proposed CMCT path planning
(CMCT-PP) algorithm. It prevents the collision between robots
during moving. The robots interact in an ad hoc wireless network.
Simulation results show that the proposed system that consists of
CMCT algorithm and its accomplished CMCT-PP algorithm
achieves a high improvement in time and distance while performing
the required tasks over the already existed algorithms.
