Abstract: In this paper, the 2-D unsteady viscous flow around
two cam shaped cylinders in tandem arrangement is numerically
simulated in order to study the characteristics of the flow in turbulent
regimes. The investigation covers the effects of high subcritical and
supercritical Reynolds numbers and L/D ratio on total drag
coefficient. The equivalent diameter of cylinders is 27.6 mm The
space between center to center of two cam shaped cylinders is define
as longitudinal pitch ratio and it varies in range of 1.5< L/D
Abstract: A solar receiver is designed for operation under
extremely uneven heat flux distribution, cyclic weather, and cloud
transient cycle conditions, which can include large thermal stress and
even receiver failure. In this study, the effect of different oil velocity
on convection coefficient factor and impact of wind velocity on local
Nusselt number by Finite Volume Method will be analyzed. This
study is organized to give an overview of the numerical modeling
using a MATLAB software, as an accurate, time efficient and
economical way of analyzing the heat transfer trends over stationary
receiver tube for different Reynolds number. The results reveal when
oil velocity is below 0.33m/s, the value of convection coefficient is
negligible at low temperature. The numerical graphs indicate that
when oil velocity increases up to 1.2 m/s, heat convection coefficient
increases significantly. In fact, a reduction in oil velocity causes a
reduction in heat conduction through the glass envelope. In addition,
the different local Nusselt number is reduced when the wind blows
toward the concave side of the collector and it has a significant effect
on heat losses reduction through the glass envelope.
Abstract: The steady flow of a second order fluid through
constricted tube with slip velocity at wall is modeled and analyzed
theoretically. The governing equations are simplified by implying no
slip in radial direction. Based on Karman Pohlhausen procedure
polynomial solution for axial velocity profile is presented.
Expressions for pressure gradient, shear stress, separation and
reattachment points, and radial velocity are also calculated. The
effect of slip and no slip velocity on magnitude velocity, shear stress,
and pressure gradient are discussed and depicted graphically. It is
noted that when Reynolds number increases magnitude velocity of
the fluid decreases in both slip and no slip conditions. It is also found
that the wall shear stress, separation, and reattachment points are
strongly affected by Reynolds number.
Abstract: An experimental study with four different types of bed
conditions was carried out to understand the effect of roughness in
open channel flow at two different Reynolds numbers. The bed
conditions include a smooth surface and three different roughness
conditions, which were generated using sand grains with a median
diameter of 2.46 mm. The three rough conditions include a surface
with distributed roughness, a surface with continuously distributed
roughness and a sand bed with a permeable interface. A commercial
two-component fibre-optic LDA system was used to conduct the
velocity measurements. The variables of interest include the mean
velocity, turbulence intensity, correlation between the streamwise and
the wall normal turbulence, Reynolds shear stress and velocity triple
products. Quadrant decomposition was used to extract the magnitude
of the Reynolds shear stress of the turbulent bursting events. The
effect of roughness was evident throughout the flow depth. The
results show that distributed roughness has the greatest roughness
effect followed by the sand bed and the continuous roughness.
Compared to the smooth bed, the streamwise turbulence intensity
reduces but the vertical turbulence intensity increases at a location
very close to the bed due to the introduction of roughness. Although
the same sand grain is used to create the three different rough bed
conditions, the difference in the turbulence intensity is an indication
that the specific geometry of the roughness has an influence on
turbulence structure.
Abstract: The hydrodynamic and thermal behaviors of fluid
flow in wavy microchannel are investigated numerically. Effects of
Reynolds number on the hydrodynamics and thermal behaviors are
investigated. Three cases of Reynolds number (580, 1244, and 1910)
are adopted in this study. It is found that the separation zone begin
appears when Reynolds number is greater than 1910 at the endsection
of the wave. Also it is found that dimensionless maximum
velocity at the mid-section of the wave decreases and becomes as a
turbulent behavior as Reynolds numbers increases. The maximum
temperature at the center line at the mid-section of the wave increases
as Reynolds number increases until it reaches the turbulent behavior
when Reynolds number is equal or greater than 1244, while this
behavior will be achieved at very high velocities at the end section of
the wave.
Abstract: In this numerical work, mixed convection and entropy
generation of Cu–water nanofluid in a lid-driven square cavity have
been investigated numerically using the Lattice Boltzmann Method.
Horizontal walls of the cavity are adiabatic and vertical walls have
constant temperature but different values. The top wall has been
considered as moving from left to right at a constant speed, U0. The
effects of different parameters such as nanoparticle volume
concentration (0–0.05), Rayleigh number (104–106) and Reynolds
numbers (1, 10 and 100) on the entropy generation, flow and
temperature fields are studied. The results have shown that addition
of nanoparticles to the base fluid affects the entropy generation, flow
pattern and thermal behavior especially at higher Rayleigh and low
Reynolds numbers. For pure fluid as well as nanofluid, the increase
of Reynolds number increases the average Nusselt number and the
total entropy generation, linearly. The maximum entropy generation
occurs in nanofluid at low Rayleigh number and at high Reynolds
number. The minimum entropy generation occurs in pure fluid at low
Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers. Also at higher Reynolds number,
the effect of Cu nanoparticles on enhancement of heat transfer was
decreased because the effect of lid-driven cavity was increased. The
present results are validated by favorable comparisons with
previously published results. The results of the problem are presented
in graphical and tabular forms and discussed.
Abstract: In this paper numerical studies have been carried out
to examine the pre-ignition flow features of high-performance solid
propellant rocket motors with two different port geometries but with
same propellant loading density. Numerical computations have been
carried out using a validated 3D, unsteady, 2nd-order implicit, SST k-
ω turbulence model. In the numerical study, a fully implicit finite
volume scheme of the compressible, Reynolds-Averaged, Navier-
Stokes equations is employed. We have observed from the numerical
results that in solid rocket motors with highly loaded propellants
having divergent port geometry the hot igniter gases can create preignition
pressure oscillations leading to thrust oscillations due to the
flow unsteadiness and recirculation. We have also observed that the
igniter temperature fluctuations are diminished rapidly thereby
reaching the steady state value faster in the case of solid propellant
rocket motors with convergent port than the divergent port
irrespective of the igniter total pressure. We have concluded that the
prudent selection of the port geometry, without altering the propellant
loading density, for damping the total temperature fluctuations within
the motor is a meaningful objective for the suppression and control of
instability and/or thrust oscillations often observed in solid propellant
rocket motors with non-uniform port geometry.
Abstract: In this paper comprehensive studies have been carried
out for the design optimization of a waste heat recovery system for
effectively utilizing the domestic air conditioner heat energy for
producing hot water. Numerical studies have been carried for the
geometry optimization of a waste heat recovery system for domestic
air conditioners. Numerical computations have been carried out using
a validated 2d pressure based, unsteady, 2nd-order implicit, SST k-ω
turbulence model. In the numerical study, a fully implicit finite
volume scheme of the compressible, Reynolds-Averaged, Navier-
Stokes equations is employed. At identical inflow and boundary
conditions various geometries were tried and effort has been taken for
proposing the best design criteria. Several combinations of pipe line
shapes viz., straight and spiral with different number of coils for the
radiator have been attempted and accordingly the design criteria has
been proposed for the waste heat recovery system design. We have
concluded that, within the given envelope, the geometry optimization
is a meaningful objective for getting better performance of waste heat
recovery system for air conditioners.
Abstract: This paper presents a computational study of steady
state three dimensional very high turbulent flow and heat transfer
characteristics in a constant temperature-surfaced circular duct fitted
with 900 hemispherical inline baffles. The computations are based on
realizable k-ɛ model with standard wall function considering the
finite volume method, and the SIMPLE algorithm has been
implemented. Computational Study are carried out for Reynolds
number, Re ranging from 80000 to 120000, Prandtl Number, Pr of
0.73, Pitch Ratios, PR of 1,2,3,4,5 based on the hydraulic diameter of
the channel, hydrodynamic entry length, thermal entry length and the
test section. Ansys Fluent 15.0 software has been used to solve the
flow field. Study reveals that circular pipe having baffles has a higher
Nusselt number and friction factor compared to the smooth circular
pipe without baffles. Maximum Nusselt number and friction factor
are obtained for the PR=5 and PR=1 respectively. Nusselt number
increases while pitch ratio increases in the range of study; however,
friction factor also decreases up to PR 3 and after which it becomes
almost constant up to PR 5. Thermal enhancement factor increases
with increasing pitch ratio but with slightly decreasing Reynolds
number in the range of study and becomes almost constant at higher
Reynolds number. The computational results reveal that optimum
thermal enhancement factor of 900 inline hemispherical baffle is
about 1.23 for pitch ratio 5 at Reynolds number 120000.It also shows
that the optimum pitch ratio for which the baffles can be installed in
such very high turbulent flows should be 5. Results show that pitch
ratio and Reynolds number play an important role on both fluid flow
and heat transfer characteristics.
Abstract: Heat transfer due to forced convection of copper water
based nanofluid has been predicted by Artificial Neural network
(ANN). The present nanofluid is formed by mixing copper
nanoparticles in water and the volume fractions are considered here
are 0% to 15% and the Reynolds number are kept constant at 100.
The back propagation algorithm is used to train the network. The
present ANN is trained by the input and output data which has been
obtained from the numerical simulation, performed in finite volume
based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial software
Ansys Fluent. The numerical simulation based results are compared
with the back propagation based ANN results. It is found that the
forced convection heat transfer of water based nanofluid can be
predicted correctly by ANN. It is also observed that the back
propagation ANN can predict the heat transfer characteristics of
nanofluid very quickly compared to standard CFD method.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical investigation of two
horizontally mounted four-lobed swirl pipes in terms of swirl
induction effectiveness into flows passing through them. The swirl
flows induced by the two swirl pipes have the potential to improve
the efficiency of Clean-In-Place procedures in a closed processing
system by local intensification of hydrodynamic impact on the
internal pipe surface. Pressure losses, swirl development within the
two swirl pipe, swirl induction effectiveness, swirl decay and wall
shear stress variation downstream of two swirl pipes are analyzed and
compared. It was found that a shorter length of swirl inducing pipe
used in joint with transition pipes is more effective in swirl induction
than when a longer one is used, in that it has a less constraint to the
induced swirl and results in slightly higher swirl intensity just
downstream of it with the expense of a smaller pressure loss. The
wall shear stress downstream of the shorter swirl pipe is also slightly
larger than that downstream of the longer swirl pipe due to the
slightly higher swirl intensity induced by the shorter swirl pipe. The
advantage of the shorter swirl pipe in terms of swirl induction is more
significant in flows with a larger Reynolds Number.
Abstract: In this research numerical simulations are performed,
using the multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method, in the
range 3 ≤ β = w[d] ≤ 30 at Re = 100, 200 and 300, where β the
blockage ratio, w is the equispaced distance between centers of
cylinders, d is the diameter of the cylinder and Re is the Reynolds
number, respectively. Special attention is paid to the effect of the
equispaced distance between centers of cylinders. Visualization of
the vorticity contour visualization are presented for some simulation
showing the flow dynamics and patterns for blockage effect. Results
show that the drag and mean drag coefficients, and Strouhal number,
in general, decrease with the increase of β for fixed Re. It is found
that the decreasing rate of drag and mean drag coefficients and
Strouhal number is more distinct in the range 3 ≤ β ≤ 15. We found
that when β > 15, the blockage effect almost diminishes. Our results
further indicate that the drag and mean drag coefficients, peak value
of the lift coefficient, root-mean-square value of the lift and drag
coefficients and the ratio between lift and drag coefficients decrease
with the increase of Re. The results indicate that symmetry boundary
condition have more blockage effect as compared to periodic
boundary condition.
Abstract: Fixed-geometry hydrodynamic journal bearings are
one of the best supporting systems for several applications of rotating
machinery. Cylindrical journal bearings present excellent loadcarrying
capacity and low manufacturing costs, but they are subjected
to the oil-film instability at high speeds. An attempt of overcoming
this instability problem has been the development of non-circular
journal bearings. This work deals with an analysis of oil-lubricated
elliptical journal bearings using the finite element method. Steadystate
and dynamic performance characteristics of elliptical bearings
are rendered by zeroth- and first-order lubrication equations obtained
through a linearized perturbation method applied on the classical
Reynolds equation. Four-node isoparametric rectangular finite
elements are employed to model the bearing thin film flow. Curves of
elliptical bearing load capacity and dynamic force coefficients are
rendered at several operating conditions. The results presented in this
work demonstrate the influence of the bearing ellipticity on its
performance at different loading conditions.
Abstract: An analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of
magnetic field and heat source on the steady boundary layer flow and
heat transfer of a Casson nanofluid over a vertical cylinder stretching
exponentially along its radial direction. Using a similarity
transformation, the governing mathematical equations, with the
boundary conditions are reduced to a system of coupled, non –linear
ordinary differential equations. The resulting system is solved
numerically by the fourth order Runge – Kutta scheme with shooting
technique. The influence of various physical parameters such as
Reynolds number, Prandtl number, magnetic field, Brownian motion
parameter, thermophoresis parameter, Lewis number and the natural
convection parameter are presented graphically and discussed for non
– dimensional velocity, temperature and nanoparticle volume
fraction. Numerical data for the skin – friction coefficient, local
Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number have been tabulated
for various parametric conditions. It is found that the local Nusselt
number is a decreasing function of Brownian motion parameter Nb
and the thermophoresis parameter Nt.
Abstract: In this report we have discussed the theoretical aspects
of the flow transformation, occurring through a series of bifurcations.
The parameters and their continuous diversion, the intermittent bursts
in the transition zone, variation of velocity and pressure with time,
effect of roughness in turbulent zone, and changes in friction factor
and head loss coefficient as a function of Reynolds number for a
transverse flow across a cylinder have been discussed. An analysis of
the variation in the wake length with Reynolds number was done in
FORTRAN.
Abstract: In the present study, mixed convection in a horizontal
rectangular duct using Al2O3 is numerically investigated. The effects
of different Rayleigh number, Reynolds number and radiation on
flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied in detail. This study
covers Rayleigh number in the range of 2 × 10^6 ≤ Ra ≤ 2 × 10^7 and
Reynolds number in the range of 100 ≤ Re ≤ 1100. Results reveal that
the Nusselt number increases as Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers
increase. It is also found that the dimensionless temperature
distribution increases as Rayleigh number increases.
Abstract: The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of
stirred tank with the air-water interface are carried out in the presence
of different types of the impeller and with or without baffles. A
multiple reference frame (MRF) approach with the volume of fluid
(VOF) method is used to capture the air-water interface. The RANS
(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations with k-ε turbulence
model are solved to predict the flow behavior of water and air phase
which are treated as a different phases. The predicted results have
shown that the VOF method is able to capture the interface in the
unbaffled tank. While, the VOF method is showing an unfeasible
results in the baffled tank with high rotational impeller speed. For
continuous stirred tank, the air-water interface is disturbed by the
inflow and the level of water is also increased with time.
Abstract: In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a threelobe
journal bearing lubricated with micropolar fluids are determined
by the linear stability theory. Lubricating oil containing additives and
contaminants is modelled as micropolar fluid. The modified
Reynolds equation is obtained using the micropolar lubrication theory
.The finite difference technique has been used to determine the
solution of the modified Reynolds equation. The dynamic
characteristics in terms of stiffness, damping coefficients, the critical
mass and whirl ratio are determined for various values of size of
material characteristic length and the coupling number. The
computed results show that the three-lobe bearing lubricated with
micropolar fluid exhibits better stability compared with that
lubricated with Newtonian fluid. According to the results obtained,
the effect of the parameter micropolar fluid is remarkable on the
dynamic characteristics and stability of the three-lobe bearing.
Abstract: The reliability of the filtered HVBK model is now
investigated via some large eddy simulations (LES) of freely
decaying isotropic superfluid turbulence. For homogeneous
turbulence at very high Reynolds numbers, comparison of the terms
in the spectral kinetic energy budget equation indicates, in the
energy-containing range, that the production and energy transfer
effects become significant except for dissipation. In the inertial range,
where the two fluids are perfectly locked, the mutual friction maybe
neglected with respect to other terms. Also, the LES results for the
other terms of the energy balance are presented.
Abstract: A computational fluid dynamics simulation is done for
non-Newtonian fluid in a baffled stirred tank. The CMC solution is
taken as non-Newtonian shear thinning fluid for simulation. The
Reynolds Average Navier Stocks equation with steady state multi
reference frame approach is used to simulate flow in the stirred tank.
The turbulent flow field is modelled using realizable k-ε turbulence
model. The simulated velocity profiles of Rushton turbine is
validated with literature data. Then, the simulated flow field of CD-6
impeller is compared with the Rushton turbine. The flow field
generated by CD-6 impeller is less in magnitude than the Rushton
turbine. The impeller global parameter, power number and flow
number, and entropy generation due to viscous dissipation rate is also
reported.
