Abstract: Six Sigma is a well known discipline that reduces
variation using complex statistical tools and the DMAIC model. By
integrating Goldratts-s Theory of Constraints, the Five Focusing
Points and System Thinking tools, Six Sigma projects can be selected
where it can cause more impact in the company. This research
defines an integrated model of six sigma and constraint management
that shows a step-by-step guide using the original methodologies
from each discipline and is evaluated in a case study from the
production line of a Automobile engine monoblock V8, resulting in
an increase in the line capacity from 18.7 pieces per hour to 22.4
pieces per hour, a reduction of 60% of Work-In-Process and a
variation decrease of 0.73%.
Abstract: Theory of Constraints has been emerging as an
important tool for optimization of manufacturing/service systems.
Goldratt in his first book “ The Goal " gave the introduction on
Theory of Constraints and its applications in a factory scenario. A
large number of production managers around the globe read this book
but only a few could implement it in their plants because the book did
not explain the steps to implement TOC in the factory. To overcome
these limitations, Goldratt wrote this book to explain TOC, DBR and
the method to implement it. In this paper, an attempt has been made
to summarize the salient features of TOC and DBR listed in the book
and the correct approach to implement TOC in a factory setting. The
simulator available along with the book was actually used by the
authors and the claim of Goldratt regarding the use of DBR and
Buffer management to ease the work of production managers was
tested and was found to be correct.
Abstract: Dr Eliyahu Goldratt has done the pioneering work in
the development of Theory of Constraints. Since then, many more
researchers around the globe are working to enhance this body of
knowledge. In this paper, an attempt has been made to compile the
salient features of this theory from the work done by Goldratt and
other researchers. This paper will provide a good starting point to the
potential researchers interested to work in Theory of Constraints. The
paper will also help the practicing managers by clarifying their
concepts on the theory and will facilitate its successful
implementation in their working areas.
