Abstract: In vitro conservation of orchid germplasm provides an effective technique for ex situ conservation of orchid diversity. In this study, an efficient protocol for in vitro conservation of Vandopsis lissochiloides (Gaudich.) Pfitz. plantlet under slow growth conditions was investigated. Plantlets were cultured on different strength of Vacin and Went medium (½VW and ¼VW) supplemented with different concentrations of mannitol (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%), sucrose (0 and 3%) and 50 g/L potato extract, 150 mL/L coconut water. The cultures were incubated at 25±2 °C and maintained under 20 µmol/m2s light intensity for 24 weeks without subculture. At the end of preservation period, the plantlets were subcultured to fresh medium for growth recovery. The results found that the highest leaf number per plantlet could be observed on ¼VW medium without adding sucrose and mannitol while the highest root number per plantlet was found on ½VW added with 3% sucrose without adding mannitol after 24 weeks of in vitro storage. The results showed that the maximum number of leaves (5.8 leaves) and roots (5.0 roots) of preserved plantlets were produced on ¼VW medium without adding sucrose and mannitol. Therefore, ¼VW medium without adding sucrose and mannitol was the best minimum growth conditions for medium-term storage of V. lissochiloides plantlets.
Abstract: Antoni Gaudi and Santiago Calatrava have reputation for designing bio-inspired creative and technical buildings. Even though they have followed different independent approaches towards design, the source of bio-inspiration seems to be common. Taking a closer look at their projects reveals that Calatrava has been influenced by Gaudi in terms of interpreting nature and applying natural principles into the design process. This research firstly discusses the dialogue between Biomimicry and architecture. This review also explores human/nature discourse during the history by focusing on how nature revealed itself to the fine arts. This is explained by introducing naturalism and romantic style in architecture as the outcome of designers’ inclination towards nature. Reviewing the literature, theoretical background and practical illustration of nature have been included. The most dominant practical aspects of imitating nature are form and function. Nature has been reflected in architectural science resulted in shaping different architectural styles such as organic, green, sustainable, bionic, and biomorphic. By defining a set of common aspects of Gaudi and Calatrava‘s design approach and by considering biomimetic design categories (organism, ecosystem, and behaviour as the main division and form, function, process, material, and construction as subdivisions), Gaudi’s and Calatrava’s project have been analysed. This analysis explores if their design approaches are equivalent or different. Based on this analysis, Gaudi’s architecture can be recognised as biomorphic while Calatrava’s projects are literally biomimetic. Referring to these architects, this review suggests a new set of principles by which a bio-inspired project can be determined either biomorphic or biomimetic.
Abstract: We present an Electronic Nose (ENose), which is
aimed at identifying the presence of one out of two gases, possibly
detecting the presence of a mixture of the two. Estimation of the
concentrations of the components is also performed for a volatile
organic compound (VOC) constituted by methanol and acetone, for
the ranges 40-400 and 22-220 ppm (parts-per-million), respectively.
Our system contains 8 sensors, 5 of them being gas sensors (of the
class TGS from FIGARO USA, INC., whose sensing element is a tin
dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor), the remaining being a temperature
sensor (LM35 from National Semiconductor Corporation), a
humidity sensor (HIH–3610 from Honeywell), and a pressure sensor
(XFAM from Fujikura Ltd.).
Our integrated hardware–software system uses some machine
learning principles and least square regression principle to identify at
first a new gas sample, or a mixture, and then to estimate the
concentrations. In particular we adopt a training model using the
Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach with linear kernel to teach
the system how discriminate among different gases. Then we apply
another training model using the least square regression, to predict
the concentrations.
The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed
multiclassification and regression scheme is effective in the
identification of the tested VOCs of methanol and acetone with
96.61% correctness. The concentration prediction is obtained with
0.979 and 0.964 correlation coefficient for the predicted versus real
concentrations of methanol and acetone, respectively.
Abstract: Two completely different approaches for a Gigabit
Ethernet compliant stream transmission over 50m of 1mm PMMA SI-POF have been experimentally demonstrated and are compared in this paper. The first solution is based on a commercial RC-LED
transmission and a careful optimization of the physical layer architecture, realized during the POF-PLUS EU Project. The second solution exploits the performance of an edge-emitting laser at the
transmitter side in order to avoid any sort of electrical equalization at the receiver side.
Abstract: We demonstrate a 40Gbps downstream PON
transmission based on PM-QPSK modulation using commercial DFB
lasers without optical amplifier in the ODN, obtaining 40dB power
budget. We discuss this solution within NG-PON2 architectures.
