Abstract: Although face recognition seems as an easy task for
human, automatic face recognition is a much more challenging task
due to variations in time, illumination and pose. In this paper, the
influence of time-lapse on visible and thermal images is examined.
Orthogonal moment invariants are used as a feature extractor to
analyze the effect of time-lapse on thermal and visible images and the
results are compared with conventional Principal Component
Analysis (PCA). A new triangle square ratio criterion is employed
instead of Euclidean distance to enhance the performance of nearest
neighbor classifier. The results of this study indicate that the ideal
feature vectors can be represented with high discrimination power
due to the global characteristic of orthogonal moment invariants.
Moreover, the effect of time-lapse has been decreasing and enhancing
the accuracy of face recognition considerably in comparison with
PCA. Furthermore, our experimental results based on moment
invariant and triangle square ratio criterion show that the proposed
approach achieves on average 13.6% higher in recognition rate than
PCA.
Abstract: True integration of multimedia services over wired or
wireless networks increase the productivity and effectiveness in
today-s networks. IP Multimedia Subsystems are Next Generation
Network architecture to provide the multimedia services over fixed
or mobile networks. This paper proposes an extended SIP-based QoS
Management architecture for IMS services over underlying IP access
networks. To guarantee the end-to-end QoS for IMS services in
interconnection backbone, SIP based proxy Modules are introduced
to support the QoS provisioning and to reduce the handoff disruption
time over IP access networks. In our approach these SIP Modules
implement the combination of Diffserv and MPLS QoS mechanisms
to assure the guaranteed QoS for real-time multimedia services. To
guarantee QoS over access networks, SIP Modules make QoS
resource reservations in advance to provide best QoS to IMS users
over heterogeneous networks. To obtain more reliable multimedia
services, our approach allows the use of SCTP protocol over SIP
instead of UDP due to its multi-streaming feature. This architecture
enables QoS provisioning for IMS roaming users to differentiate IMS
network from other common IP networks for transmission of realtime
multimedia services. To validate our approach simulation
models are developed on short scale basis. The results show that our
approach yields comparable performance for efficient delivery of
IMS services over heterogeneous IP access networks.
Abstract: The aerodynamic noise radiation from a side view mirror (SVM) in the high-speed airflow is calculated by the combination of unsteady incompressible fluid flow analysis and acoustic analysis. The transient flow past the generic SVM is simulated with variable turbulence model, namely DES Detached Eddy Simulation and LES (Large Eddy Simulation). Detailed velocity vectors and contour plots of the time-varying velocity and pressure fields are presented along cut planes in the flow-field. Mean and transient pressure are also monitored at several points in the flow field and compared to corresponding experimentally data published in literature. The acoustic predictions made using the Ffowcs-Williams-Hawkins acoustic analogy (FW-H) and the boundary element (BEM).
Abstract: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in mathematical education is a very active field of research and innovation, where learning is understood to be meaningful and grasping multiple linked representation rather than rote memorization, a great amount of literature offering a wide range of theories, learning approaches, methodologies and interpretations, are generally stressing the potentialities for teaching and learning using ICT. Despite the utilization of new learning approaches with ICT, students experience difficulties in learning concepts relevant to understanding mathematics, much remains unclear about the relationship between the computer environment, the activities it might support, and the knowledge that might emerge from such activities. Many questions that might arise in this regard: to what extent does the use of ICT help students in the process of understanding and solving tasks or problems? Is it possible to identify what aspects or features of students' mathematical learning can be enhanced by the use of technology? This paper will highlight the interest of the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) into the teaching and learning of mathematics (quadratic functions), it aims to investigate the effect of four instructional methods on students- mathematical understanding and problem solving. Quantitative and qualitative methods are used to report about 43 students in middle school. Results showed that mathematical thinking and problem solving evolves as students engage with ICT activities and learn cooperatively.
Abstract: This paper will discuss about an active power generator scheduling method in order to increase the limit level of steady state systems. Some power generator optimization methods such as Langrange, PLN (Indonesian electricity company) Operation, and the proposed Z-Thevenin-based method will be studied and compared in respect of their steady state aspects. A method proposed in this paper is built upon the thevenin equivalent impedance values between each load respected to each generator. The steady state stability index obtained with the REI DIMO method. This research will review the 500kV-Jawa-Bali interconnection system. The simulation results show that the proposed method has the highest limit level of steady state stability compared to other optimization techniques such as Lagrange, and PLN operation. Thus, the proposed method can be used to create the steady state stability limit of the system especially in the peak load condition.
Abstract: Since the late 1980s, the new phenomena of 'employment subcentres' or 'polycentricity' has appeared in the metropolises of North American and Western Europe and it has been an interesting topic for academics and researchers. This paper specifically uses one case study-Guangzhou to explore the development and the mechanism of employment subcentres and polycentricity in Chinese metropolises by spatial analysis method on the basis of the first economic census data. In conclusion, the paper regards that the employment subcentres and polycentricity has existed in Chinese metropolises. And that, the mechanism of them is mainly from the secondary industry instead of the tertiary industry in North American and Western Europe
Abstract: The purpose of the study is to determine the primary mathematics student teachers- views related to use instructional technology tools in course of the learning process and to reveal how the sample presentations towards different mathematical concepts affect their views. This is a qualitative study involving twelve mathematics students from a public university. The data gathered from two semi-structural interviews. The first one was realized in the beginning of the study. After that the representations prepared by the researchers were showed to the participants. These representations contain animations, Geometer-s Sketchpad activities, video-clips, spreadsheets, and power-point presentations. The last interview was realized at the end of these representations. The data from the interviews and content analyses were transcribed and read and reread to explore the major themes. Findings revealed that the views of the students changed in this process and they believed that the instructional technology tools should be used in their classroom.
Abstract: The main objective of this project is to build an
autonomous microcontroller-based mobile robot for a local robot
soccer competition. The black competition field is equipped with
white lines to serve as the guidance path for competing robots. Two
prototypes of soccer robot embedded with the Basic Stamp II
microcontroller have been developed. Two servo motors are used as
the drive train for the first prototype whereas the second prototype
uses two DC motors as its drive train. To sense the lines, lightdependent
resistors (LDRs) supply the analog inputs for the
microcontroller. The performances of both prototypes are evaluated.
The DC motor-driven robot has produced better trajectory control
over the one using servo motors and has brought the team into the
final round.
Abstract: Position based routing protocols are the kinds of
routing protocols, which they use of nodes location information,
instead of links information to routing. In position based routing
protocols, it supposed that the packet source node has position
information of itself and it's neighbors and packet destination node.
Greedy is a very important position based routing protocol. In one of
it's kinds, named MFR (Most Forward Within Radius), source node
or packet forwarder node, sends packet to one of it's neighbors with
most forward progress towards destination node (closest neighbor to
destination). Using distance deciding metric in Greedy to forward
packet to a neighbor node, is not suitable for all conditions. If closest
neighbor to destination node, has high speed, in comparison with
source node or intermediate packet forwarder node speed or has very
low remained battery power, then packet loss probability is
increased. Proposed strategy uses combination of metrics distancevelocity
similarity-power, to deciding about giving the packet to
which neighbor. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy
has lower lost packets average than Greedy, so it has more reliability.
Abstract: This paper presents the result of three senior capstone
projects at the Department of Computer Engineering, Prince of
Songkla University, Thailand. These projects focus on developing an
examination management system for the Faculty of Engineering in
order to manage the examination both the examination room
assignments and the examination proctor assignments in each room.
The current version of the software is a web-based application. The
developed software allows the examination proctors to select their
scheduled time online while each subject is assigned to each available
examination room according to its type and the room capacity. The
developed system is evaluated using real data by prospective users of
the system. Several suggestions for further improvements are given
by the testers. Even though the features of the developed software are
not superior, the developing process can be a case study for a projectbased
teaching style. Furthermore, the process of developing this
software can show several issues in developing an educational
support application.
Abstract: Inadequate curriculum for software engineering is considered to be one of the most common software risks. A number of solutions, on improving Software Engineering Education (SEE) have been reported in literature but there is a need to collectively present these solutions at one place. We have performed a mapping study to present a broad view of literature; published on improving the current state of SEE. Our aim is to give academicians, practitioners and researchers an international view of the current state of SEE. Our study has identified 70 primary studies that met our selection criteria, which we further classified and categorized in a well-defined Software Engineering educational framework. We found that the most researched category within the SE educational framework is Innovative Teaching Methods whereas the least amount of research was found in Student Learning and Assessment category. Our future work is to conduct a Systematic Literature Review on SEE.

Abstract: Malaysian corporations going global increased
many folds. The shift from domestic to international operations
requires increased expatriation to achieve global business goals.
Therefore, this study aims to identify the determinants for success
in expatriation of Malaysian international corporations. There are
certain attributes necessary for a global employee to succeed in
international assignment. Self-administered questionnaires were
sent to 327 respondents with a response rate of 35.2 percent. The
results indicated that most Malaysian manufacturers are involved
in expatriation. For a global employee to succeed in an
international assignment, the ability to work in international teams
was identified and ranked as the most important factor in
determining the effectiveness of expatriation followed by language
proficiency, adaptability to the international assignment and
expatriate sensitivity to cultural elements. The results support
previous research with regard to the importance of an effective
expatriation selection process in order for a company-s
international expansion strategy to succeed.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical analysis of the
performance of a three-bladed Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbine
based on the DU91-W2-250 airfoil. A complete campaign of 2-D
simulations, performed for several values of tip speed ratio and based
on RANS unsteady calculations, has been performed to obtain the
rotor torque and power curves. Rotor performances have been
compared with the results of a previous work based on the use of the
NACA 0021 airfoil. Both the power coefficient and the torque
coefficient have been determined as a function of the tip speed ratio.
The flow field around rotor blades has also been analyzed. As a final
result, the performance of the DU airfoil based rotor appears to be
lower than the one based on the NACA 0021 blade section. This
behavior could be due to the higher stall characteristics of the NACA
profile, being the separation zone at the trailing edge more extended
for the DU airfoil.
Abstract: This paper explains how mobile learning assures sustainable e-education for multicultural group of students. This paper reports the impact of mobile learning on distance education in multicultural environment. The emergence of learning technologies through CD, internet, and mobile is increasingly adopted by distance institutes for quick delivery and cost-effective purposes. Their sustainability is conditioned by the structure of learners as well as the teaching community. The experimental study was conducted among the distant learners of Vinayaka Missions University located at Salem in India. Students were drawn from multicultural environment based on different languages, religions, class and communities. During the mobile learning sessions, the students, who are divided on language, religion, class and community, were dominated by play impulse rather than study anxiety or cultural inhibitions. This study confirmed that mobile learning improved the performance of the students despite their division based on region, language or culture. In other words, technology was able to transcend the relative deprivation in the multicultural groups. It also confirms sustainable e-education through mobile learning and cost-effective system of instruction. Mobile learning appropriates the self-motivation and play impulse of the young learners in providing sustainable e-education to multicultural social groups of students.
Abstract: In this paper we propose, a Lagrangian method to solve unsteady gas equation which is a nonlinear ordinary differential equation on semi-infnite interval. This approach is based on Modified generalized Laguerre functions. This method reduces the solution of this problem to the solution of a system of algebraic equations. We also compare this work with some other numerical results. The findings show that the present solution is highly accurate.
Abstract: In this paper, a fiber based Fabry-Perot interferometer
is proposed and demonstrated for a non-contact displacement
measurement. A piece of micro-prism which attached to the
mechanical vibrator is served as the target reflector. Interference
signal is generated from the superposition between the sensing beam
and the reference beam within the sensing arm of the fiber sensor.
This signal is then converted to the displacement value by using a
developed program written in visual Cµ programming with a
resolution of λ/8. A classical function generator is operated for
controlling the vibrator. By fixing an excitation frequency of 100 Hz
and varying the excitation amplitude range of 0.1 – 3 Volts, the
output displacements measured by the fiber sensor are obtained from
1.55 μm to 30.225 μm. A reference displacement sensor with a
sensitivity of ~0.4 μm is also employed for comparing the
displacement errors between both sensors. We found that over the
entire displacement range, a maximum and average measurement
error are obtained of 0.977% and 0.44% respectively.
Abstract: This paper analyses the unsteady, two-dimensional
stagnation point flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a flat
sheet when the flow is started impulsively from rest and at the same
time, the sheet is suddenly stretched in its own plane with a velocity
proportional to the distance from the stagnation point. The partial
differential equations governing the laminar boundary layer forced
convection flow are non-dimensionalised using semi-similar
transformations and then solved numerically using an implicit finitedifference
scheme known as the Keller-box method. Results
pertaining to the flow and heat transfer characteristics are computed
for all dimensionless time, uniformly valid in the whole spatial region
without any numerical difficulties. Analytical solutions are also
obtained for both small and large times, respectively representing the
initial unsteady and final steady state flow and heat transfer.
Numerical results indicate that the velocity ratio parameter is found
to have a significant effect on skin friction and heat transfer rate at
the surface. Furthermore, it is exposed that there is a smooth
transition from the initial unsteady state flow (small time solution) to
the final steady state (large time solution).
Abstract: Determination of wellbore problems during a
production/injection process might be evaluated thorough
temperature log analysis. Other applications of this kind of log
analysis may also include evaluation of fluid distribution analysis
along the wellbore and identification of anomalies encountered
during production/injection process. While the accuracy of such
prediction is paramount, the common method of determination of a
wellbore temperature log includes use of steady-state energy balance
equations, which hardly describe the real conditions as observed in
typical oil and gas flowing wells during production operation; and
thus increase level of uncertainties. In this study, a practical method
has been proposed through development of a simplified semianalytical
model to apply for predicting temperature profile along the
wellbore. The developed model includes an overall heat transfer
coefficient accounting all modes of heat transferring mechanism,
which has been focused on the prediction of a temperature profile as
a function of depth for the injection/production wells. The model has
been validated with the results obtained from numerical simulation.
Abstract: Recognizing behavioral patterns of financial markets
is essential for traders. Japanese candlestick chart is a common tool to
visualize and analyze such patterns in an economic time series. Since
the world was introduced to Japanese candlestick charting, traders
saw how combining this tool with intelligent technical approaches
creates a powerful formula for the savvy investors.
This paper propose a generalization to box counting method of
Grassberger-Procaccia, which is based on computing the correlation
dimension of Japanese candlesticks instead commonly used 'close'
points. The results of this method applied on several foreign
exchange rates vs. IRR (Iranian Rial). Satisfactorily show lower
chaotic dimension of Japanese candlesticks series than regular
Grassberger-Procaccia method applied merely on close points of
these same candles. This means there is some valuable information
inside candlesticks.
