Abstract: In this study, to clarify the effectiveness of an
aluminum/chromium/tungsten-based-coated tool for cutting sintered
steel, tool wear was experimentally investigated. The sintered steel
was turned with the (Al60,Cr25,W15)N-, (Al60,Cr25,W15)(C,N)- and
(Al64,Cr28,W8)(C,N)-coated cemented carbide tools according to the
physical vapor deposition (PVD) method. Moreover, the tool wear of
the aluminum/chromium/tungsten-based-coated item was compared
with that of the (Al,Cr)N coated tool. Furthermore, to clarify the tool
wear mechanism of the aluminum/chromium/tungsten-coating film for
cutting sintered steel, Scanning Electron Microscope observation and
Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy mapping analysis were
conducted on the abraded surface. The following results were
obtained: (1) The wear progress of the (Al64,Cr28,W8)(C,N)-coated
tool was the slowest among that of the five coated tools. (2) Adding
carbon (C) to the aluminum/chromium/tungsten-based-coating film
was effective for improving the wear-resistance. (3) The main wear
mechanism of the (Al60,Cr25,W15)N-, the (Al60,Cr25,W15)(C,N)-
and the (Al64,Cr28,W8)(C,N)-coating films was abrasive wear.
Abstract: Superabsorbent polymers received much attention and
are used in many fields because of their superior characters to
traditional absorbents, e.g., sponge and cotton. So, it is very
important but challenging to prepare highly and fast-swelling
superabsorbents. A reliable, efficient and low-cost technique for
removing heavy metal ions from wastewater is the adsorption using
bio-adsorbents obtained from biological materials, such as
polysaccharides-based hydrogels superabsorbents. In this study, novel multi-functional superabsorbent composites
type semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (Semi-IPNs) were
prepared via graft polymerization of acrylamide onto chitosan
backbone in presence of gelatin, CTS-g-PAAm/Ge, using potassium
persulfate and N,N’-methylene bisacrylamide as initiator and
crosslinker, respectively. These hydrogels were also partially
hydrolyzed to achieve superabsorbents with ampholytic properties
and uppermost swelling capacity. The formation of the grafted
network was evidenced by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
(ATR-FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The porous
structures were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
From TGA analysis, it was concluded that the incorporation of the Ge
in the CTS-g-PAAm network has marginally affected its thermal
stability. The effect of gelatin content on the swelling capacities of
these superabsorbent composites was examined in various media
(distilled water, saline and pH-solutions). The water absorbency was
enhanced by adding Ge in the network, where the optimum value was
reached at 2 wt. % of Ge. Their hydrolysis has not only greatly
optimized their absorption capacity but also improved the swelling
kinetic. These materials have also showed reswelling ability. We
believe that these super-absorbing materials would be very effective
for the adsorption of harmful metal ions from wastewater.
Abstract: Numerical investigations were conducted to study the
influence of flexural reinforcement ratio on the diagonal cracking
strength and ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC)
beams without stirrups. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element
analyses (FEAs) of the beams with flexural reinforcement ratios
ranging from 0.58% to 2.20% subjected to a mid-span concentrated
load were carried out. It is observed that the load-deflection and loadstrain
curves obtained from the numerical analyses agree with those
obtained from the experiments. It is concluded that flexural
reinforcement ratio has a significant effect on the shear strength and
deflection capacity of RC beams without stirrups. The predictions of
diagonal cracking strength and ultimate shear strength of beams
obtained by using the equations defined by a number of codes and
researchers are compared with each other and with the experimental
values.
Abstract: This paper directs attention to the limitations of the
teacher-centered strategy in teaching. The aim of this study is to draw
more educational attention to learner-centered strategy in order to
shift the emphasis from the traditional concept of teaching to a new
concept in teaching. To begin bridging the traditional concept of
teaching and the new concept, the study will explore the new concept
of teaching to support teaching in Arab World generally and in Iraq
specifically. A qualitative case study orientation was used to collect
data in the form of classroom observations, interviews and field
notes. The teaching practices used by three university instructors are
investigated and according to the findings, some explanations and
recommendations are made.
Abstract: In present global scenario, aluminum alloys are
coining the attention of many innovators as competing structural
materials for automotive and space applications. Comparing to other
challenging alloys, especially, 7xxx series aluminum alloys have
been studied seriously because of benefits such as moderate strength;
better deforming characteristics and affordable cost. It is expected
that substitution of aluminum alloys for steels will result in great
improvements in energy economy, durability and recyclability.
However, it is necessary to improve the strength and the formability
levels at low temperatures in aluminum alloys for still better
applications. Aluminum–Zinc–Magnesium with or without other
wetting agent denoted as 7XXX series alloys are medium strength
heat treatable alloys. In addition to Zn, Mg as major alloying
additions, Cu, Mn and Si are the other solute elements which
contribute for the improvement in mechanical properties by suitable
heat treatment process. Subjecting to suitable treatments like age
hardening or cold deformation assisted heat treatments; known as low
temperature thermomechanical treatments (LTMT) the challenging
properties might be incorporated. T6 is the age hardening or
precipitation hardening process with artificial aging cycle whereas T8
comprises of LTMT treatment aged artificially with X% cold
deformation. When the cold deformation is provided after solution
treatment, there is increase in hardness related properties such as
wear resistance, yield and ultimate strength, toughness with the
expense of ductility. During precipitation hardening both hardness
and strength of the samples are increasing. The hardness value may
further improve when room temperature deformation is positively
supported with age hardening known as thermomechanical treatment.
It is intended to perform heat treatment and evaluate hardness, tensile
strength, wear resistance and distribution pattern of reinforcement in
the matrix. 2 to 2.5 and 3 to 3.5 times increase in hardness is reported
in age hardening and LTMT treatments respectively as compared to
as-cast composite. There was better distribution of reinforcements in
the matrix, nearly two fold increase in strength levels and up to 5
times increase in wear resistance are also observed in the present
study.
Abstract: Numerical studies have been carried out using a
validated two-dimensional standard k-omega turbulence model for
the design optimization of a thrust vector control system using shock
induced self-impinging supersonic secondary double jet. Parametric
analytical studies have been carried out at different secondary
injection locations to identifying the highest unsymmetrical
distribution of the main gas flow due to shock waves, which produces
a desirable side force more lucratively for vectoring. The results from
the parametric studies of the case on hand reveal that the shock
induced self-impinging supersonic secondary double jet is more
efficient in certain locations at the divergent region of a CD nozzle
than a case with supersonic single jet with same mass flow rate. We
observed that the best axial location of the self-impinging supersonic
secondary double jet nozzle with a given jet interaction angle, built-in
to a CD nozzle having area ratio 1.797, is 0.991 times the primary
nozzle throat diameter from the throat location. We also observed
that the flexible steering is possible after invoking ON/OFF facility to
the secondary nozzles for meeting the onboard mission requirements.
Through our case studies we concluded that the supersonic self-impinging
secondary double jet at predesigned jet interaction angle
and location can provide more flexible steering options facilitating
with 8.81% higher thrust vectoring efficiency than the conventional
supersonic single secondary jet without compromising the payload
capability of any supersonic aerospace vehicle.
Abstract: This paper aims to project the construction of a
prototype azimuthal thruster, mounted with materials of low cost and
easy access, testing in a controlled environment to measure their
performance, characteristics and feasibility of future projects. The
construction of the simulation of dynamic positioning software,
responsible for simulating a vessel and reposition it when necessary.
Validation tests were performed in the form of partial or complete
system. These tests validate the system manually or automatically.
The system provides an interface to the user and simulates the
conditions unfavorable positioning of a vessel, accurately calculates
the azimuth angle, the direction of rotation of the helix and the time
that this should be turned on so that the vessel back to position
original. A serial communication connects the Simulation Dynamic
Positioning System with Embedded System causing the usergenerated
data to simulate the DP system arrives in the form of
control signals to the motors of the propellant. This article addresses
issues in the marine industry employees.
Abstract: Contemporary theories of sustainability, concerning
the natural and built environment, have recently introduced an
environmental attitude towards the architectural design that, in turn,
affects the practice of conservation and reuse of the existing building
stock. This paper presents an environmentally friendly approach
towards the conservation of vernacular architecture and it is based on
the results of a research program which involved the investigation of
sustainable design elements of traditional buildings in Cyprus. The
research in question showed that Cypriot vernacular architecture gave
more emphasis on cooling rather than heating strategies. Another
notable finding of the investigation was the great importance given to
courtyards as they enhance considerably, and in various ways, the
microclimatic conditions of the immediate environment with
favorable results throughout the year. Moreover, it was shown that
the reduction in temperature fluctuation observed in the closed and
semi-open spaces, compared to the respective temperature fluctuation
of the external environment -due to the thermal inertia of the building
envelope- helps towards the achievement of more comfortable living
conditions within traditional dwellings. This paper concludes with a
proposal of a sustainable approach towards the conservation of the
existing environment and the introduction of new environmental
criteria for the conservation of traditional buildings, beyond the
aesthetic, morphological and structural ones that are generally
applied.
Abstract: SARA is a common and serious metabolic disorder in
early lactation in dairy cattle and in finishing beef cattle, caused by
diets with high inclusion of cereal grain. This experiment was
performed to determine the efficacy of Megasphaera elsdenii, a
major lactate-utilizing bacterium in prevention/treatment of SARA in
vivo. In vivo experimentation, it was used eight ruminally cannulated
rams and it was applied the rapid adaptation with the mixture of grain
based on wheat (80% wheat, 20% barley) and barley (80% barley,
20% wheat). During the systematic adaptation, it was followed the
probability of SARA formation by being measured the rumen pH
with two hours intervals after and before feeding. After being
evaluated the data, it was determined the ruminal pH ranged from
5.2-5.6 on the condition of feeding with 60 percentage of grain
mixture based on barley and wheat, that assured the definite form of
subacute acidosis. In four days SARA period, M. elsdenii (1010 cfu
ml-1) was inoculated during the first two days. During the SARA
period, it was observed the decrease of feed intake with M. elsdenii
inoculation. Inoculation of M. elsdenii was caused to differentiation
of rumen pH (P
Abstract: The work aims to develop a robot in the form of
autonomous vehicle to detect, inspection and mapping of
underground pipelines through the ATmega328 Arduino platform.
Hardware prototyping is very similar to C / C ++ language that
facilitates its use in robotics open source, resembles PLC used in
large industrial processes. The robot will traverse the surface
independently of direct human action, in order to automate the
process of detecting buried pipes, guided by electromagnetic
induction. The induction comes from coils that send the signal to the
Arduino microcontroller contained in that will make the difference in
intensity and the treatment of the information, and then this
determines actions to electrical components such as relays and
motors, allowing the prototype to move on the surface and getting the
necessary information. This change of direction is performed by a
stepper motor with a servo motor. The robot was developed by
electrical and electronic assemblies that allowed test your application.
The assembly is made up of metal detector coils, circuit boards and
microprocessor, which interconnected circuits previously developed
can determine, process control and mechanical actions for a robot
(autonomous car) that will make the detection and mapping of buried
pipelines plates. This type of prototype can prevent and identifies
possible landslides and they can prevent the buried pipelines suffer an
external pressure on the walls with the possibility of oil leakage and
thus pollute the environment.
Abstract: The main objective of this study was to assess the
seasonal variation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon
(PAH) concentrations associated with PM10 in an urban site of Győr,
Hungary. A total of 112 PM10 aerosol samples were collected in the
years of 2012 and 2013 and analyzed for PAHs by gas
chromatography method. The total PAH concentrations (sum of the
concentrations of 19 individual PAH compounds) ranged from 0.19
to 70.16 ng/m3 with the mean value of 12.29 ng/m3. Higher
concentrations of both total PAHs and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) were
detected in samples collected in the heating seasons. Using BaPequivalent
potency index on the carcinogenic PAH concentration
data, the local population appears to be exposed to significantly
higher cancer risk in the heating seasons. However, the comparison
of the BaP and total PAH concentrations observed for Győr with
other cities it was found that the PAH levels in Győr generally
corresponded to the EU average.
Abstract: Brownfields are one of the most important problems
that must be solved by today's cities. The topic of this article is
description of developing a comprehensive transformation of postindustrial
area of the former iron factory national cultural heritage
lower Vítkovice. City of Ostrava used to be industrial superpower of
the Czechoslovak Republic, especially in the area of coal mining and
iron production, after declining industrial production and mining in
the 80s left many unused areas of former factories generally
brownfields and backfields. Since the late 90s we are observing how
the city officials or private entities seeking to remedy this situation.
Regeneration of brownfields is a very expensive and long-term
process. The area is now rebuilt for tourists and residents of the city
in the entertainment, cultural, and social center. It was necessary do
the reconstruction of the industrial monuments. Equally important
was the construction of new buildings, which helped reusing of the
entire complex. This is a unique example of transformation of
technical monuments and completion of necessary new objects, so
that the area could start working again and reintegrate back into the
urban system.
Abstract: Si ion implantation was widely used to synthesize
specimens of SiO2 containing supersaturated Si and subsequent high
temperature annealing induces the formation of embedded
luminescent Si nanocrystals. In this work, the potentialities of excimer
UV-light (172 nm, 7.2 eV) irradiation and rapid thermal annealing
(RTA) to enhance the photoluminescence and to achieve low
temperature formation of Si nanocrystals have been investigated. The
Si ions were introduced at acceleration energy of 180 keV to fluence of
7.5 x 1016 ions/cm2. The implanted samples were subsequently
irradiated with an excimer-UV lamp. After the process, the samples
were rapidly thermal annealed before furnace annealing (FA).
Photoluminescence spectra were measured at various stages at the
process. We found that the luminescence intensity is strongly
enhanced with excimer-UV irradiation and RTA. Moreover, effective
visible photoluminescence is found to be observed even after FA at
900 oC, only for specimens treated with excimer-UV lamp and RTA.
We also prepared specimens of Si nanocrystals embedded in a SiO2 by
reactive pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in an oxygen atmosphere. We
will make clear the similarities and differences with the way of
preparation.
Abstract: This work studies the effect of chemical composition
on the activity and selectivity of γ–alumina supported CuO/
MnO2/Cr2O3 catalysts toward deep oxidation of CO, dimethyl ether
(DME) and methanol. The catalysts were prepared by impregnation
of the support with an aqueous solution of copper nitrate, manganese
nitrate and CrO3 under different conditions. Thermal, XRD and TPR
analysis were performed. The catalytic measurements of single
compounds oxidation were carried out on continuous flow equipment
with a four-channel isothermal stainless steel reactor. Flow-line
equipment with an adiabatic reactor for simultaneous oxidation of all
compounds under the conditions that mimic closely the industrial
ones was used. The reactant and product gases were analyzed by
means of on-line gas chromatographs.
On the basis of XRD analysis it can be concluded that the active
component of the mixed Cu-Mn-Cr/γ–alumina catalysts consists of at
least six compounds – CuO, Cr2O3, MnO2, Cu1.5Mn1.5O4,
Cu1.5Cr1.5O4 and CuCr2O4, depending on the Cu/Mn/Cr molar ratio.
Chemical composition strongly influences catalytic properties, this
influence being quite variable with regards to the different processes.
The rate of CO oxidation rapidly decrease with increasing of
chromium content in the active component while for the DME was
observed the reverse trend. It was concluded that the best
compromise are the catalysts with Cu/(Mn + Cr) molar ratio 1:5 and
Mn/Cr molar ratio from 1:3 to 1:4.

Abstract: In this study, breeding biology and induced breeding
of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was observed during the
experimental period from February to June, 2013. Breeding biology
of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was considered in terms of
gonadosomatic index, length-weight relationship of gonad, ova
diameter and fecundity. The ova diameter was recorded from 0.3 mm
to 4.30 mm and the individual fecundity was recorded from 155 to
1495 while relative fecundity was found from 2.64 to 12.45. The
fecundity related to body weight and length of fish was also
discussed. A peak of GSI was observed 2.14±0.2 in male and 5.1
±1.09 in female. Induced breeding of freshwater mud eel,
Monopterus cuchia was also practiced with different doses of
different inducing agents like pituitary gland (PG), human chorionic
gonadotropin (HCG), Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and
Ovuline-a synthetic hormone in different environmental conditions.
However, it was observed that the artificial breeding of freshwater
mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was not yet succeeded through inducing
agents in captive conditions, rather the inducing agent showed
negative impacts on fecundity and ovarian tissues. It was seen that
mature eggs in the oviduct were reduced, absorbed and some eggs
were found in spoiled condition.
Abstract: Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU), a
subsidiary of ExxonMobil and the highest crude oil & condensate
producer in Nigeria has its operational base and an oil terminal, the
Qua Iboe terminal (QIT) located at Ibeno, Nigeria. Other oil
companies like Network Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd,
Frontier Oil Ltd; Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd; Elf
Petroleum Nigeria Ltd and Nigerian Agip Energy, a subsidiary of the
Italian ENI E&P operate onshore, on the continental shelf and in deep
offshore of the Atlantic Ocean, respectively with the coastal waters of
Ibeno, Nigeria as the nearest shoreline. This study was designed to
delineate the oil-polluted sites in Ibeno, Nigeria using
microbiological and physico-chemical characterization of soils,
sediments and ground and surface water samples from the study area.
Results obtained revealed that there have been significant recent
hydrocarbon inputs into this environment as observed from the high
counts of hydrocarbonoclastic microorganisms in excess of 1% at all
the stations sampled. Moreover, high concentrations of THC, BTEX
and heavy metals contents in all the samples analyzed corroborate the
high recent crude oil input into the study area. The results also
showed that the pollution of the different environmental media
sampled were of varying degrees, following the trend: ground water
> surface water > sediments > soils.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose moving object detection
method which is helpful for driver to safely take his/her car out of
parking lot. When moving objects such as motorbikes, pedestrians,
the other cars and some obstacles are detected at the rear-side of host
vehicle, the proposed algorithm can provide to driver warning. We
assume that the host vehicle is just before departure. Gaussian
Mixture Model (GMM) based background subtraction is basically
applied. Pre-processing such as smoothing and post-processing as
morphological filtering are added. We examine “which color space
has better performance for detection of moving objects?” Three color
spaces including RGB, YCbCr, and Y are applied and compared, in
terms of detection rate. Through simulation, we prove that RGB
space is more suitable for moving object detection based on
background subtraction.
Abstract: Today, there is a large number of political transcripts
available on the Web to be mined and used for statistical analysis,
and product recommendations. As the online political resources are
used for various purposes, automatically determining the political
orientation on these transcripts becomes crucial. The methodologies
used by machine learning algorithms to do an automatic classification
are based on different features that are classified under categories
such as Linguistic, Personality etc. Considering the ideological
differences between Liberals and Conservatives, in this paper, the
effect of Personality traits on political orientation classification is
studied. The experiments in this study were based on the correlation
between LIWC features and the BIG Five Personality traits. Several
experiments were conducted using Convote U.S. Congressional-
Speech dataset with seven benchmark classification algorithms. The
different methodologies were applied on several LIWC feature sets
that constituted by 8 to 64 varying number of features that are
correlated to five personality traits. As results of experiments,
Neuroticism trait was obtained to be the most differentiating
personality trait for classification of political orientation. At the same
time, it was observed that the personality trait based classification
methodology gives better and comparable results with the related
work.
Abstract: Durability of Membrane Electrode Assembly for
Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells was evaluated in both steady
state and accelerated decay modes. Steady state mode was carried out
at constant current of 800mA/cm2 for 2500 hours using air as cathode
feed and pure hydrogen as anode feed. The degradation of the cell
voltage was 0.015V after such 2500 hrs operation. The degradation
rate was therefore calculated to be 6uV/hr. Continuously Vigorous
fluctuation of the cell voltage, which was switched between OCV and
0.2V, was employed for the accelerated decay mode. No obvious
change in performance of the MEA was observed after 10000 cycles
of such operation.
