Abstract: Network security attacks are the violation of
information security policy that received much attention to the
computational intelligence society in the last decades. Data mining
has become a very useful technique for detecting network intrusions
by extracting useful knowledge from large number of network data
or logs. Naïve Bayesian classifier is one of the most popular data
mining algorithm for classification, which provides an optimal way
to predict the class of an unknown example. It has been tested that
one set of probability derived from data is not good enough to have
good classification rate. In this paper, we proposed a new learning
algorithm for mining network logs to detect network intrusions
through naïve Bayesian classifier, which first clusters the network
logs into several groups based on similarity of logs, and then
calculates the prior and conditional probabilities for each group of
logs. For classifying a new log, the algorithm checks in which cluster
the log belongs and then use that cluster-s probability set to classify
the new log. We tested the performance of our proposed algorithm by
employing KDD99 benchmark network intrusion detection dataset,
and the experimental results proved that it improves detection rates
as well as reduces false positives for different types of network
intrusions.
Abstract: Forecasting the values of the indicators, which
characterize the effectiveness of performance of organizations is of
great importance for their successful development. Such forecasting
is necessary in order to assess the current state and to foresee future
developments, so that measures to improve the organization-s
activity could be undertaken in time. The article presents an
overview of the applied mathematical and statistical methods for
developing forecasts. Special attention is paid to artificial neural
networks as a forecasting tool. Their strengths and weaknesses are
analyzed and a synopsis is made of the application of artificial neural
networks in the field of forecasting of the values of different
education efficiency indicators. A method of evaluation of the
activity of universities using the Balanced Scorecard is proposed and
Key Performance Indicators for assessment of e-learning are
selected. Resulting indicators for the evaluation of efficiency of the
activity are proposed. An artificial neural network is constructed and
applied in the forecasting of the values of indicators for e-learning
efficiency on the basis of the KPI values.
Abstract: There has been a strong link between computermediated education and constructivism learning and teaching theory.. Acknowledging how well the constructivism doctrine would work online, it has been established that constructivist views of learning would agreeably correlate with the philosophy of open and distance learning. Asynchronous and synchronous communications have placed online learning on the right track of a constructive learning path. This paper is written based on the social constructivist framework, where knowledge is constructed from social communication and interaction. The study explores the possibility of practicing this theory through incorporating online discussion in the syllabus and the ways it can be implemented to contribute to young people-s personality and social development by addressing some aspects that may contribute to the social problem such as prejudice, ignorance and intolerance.
Abstract: This paper demonstrates a model of an e-Learning
system based on nowadays learning theory and distant education
practice. The relationships in the model are designed to be simple
and functional and do not necessarily represent any particular e-
Learning environments. It is meant to be a generic e-Learning
system model with implications for any distant education course
instructional design. It allows online instructors to move away from
the discrepancy between the courses and body of knowledge. The
interrelationships of four primary sectors that are at the e-Learning
system are presented in this paper. This integrated model includes
[1] pedagogy, [2] technology, [3] teaching, and [4] learning. There
are interactions within each of these sectors depicted by system loop
map.
Abstract: One of the most important aspects expected from an
ERP system is to mange user\administrator manual documents
dynamically. Since an ERP package is frequently changed during its
implementation in customer sites, it is often needed to add new
documents and/or apply required changes to existing documents in
order to cover new or changed capabilities. The worse is that since
these changes occur continuously, the corresponding documents
should be updated dynamically; otherwise, implementing the ERP
package in the organization encounters serious risks. In this paper, we
propose a new architecture which is based on the agent oriented
vision and supplies the dynamic document generation expected from
ERP systems using several independent but cooperative agents.
Beside the dynamic document generation which is the main issue of
this paper, the presented architecture will address some aspects of
intelligence and learning capabilities existing in ERP.
Abstract: In this paper, we present an innovative scheme of
blindly extracting message bits from an image distorted by an attack.
Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used to nonlinearly classify the
bits of the embedded message. Traditionally, a hard decoder is used
with the assumption that the underlying modeling of the Discrete
Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients does not appreciably change.
In case of an attack, the distribution of the image coefficients is
heavily altered. The distribution of the sufficient statistics at the
receiving end corresponding to the antipodal signals overlap and a
simple hard decoder fails to classify them properly. We are
considering message retrieval of antipodal signal as a binary
classification problem. Machine learning techniques like SVM is
used to retrieve the message, when certain specific class of attacks is
most probable. In order to validate SVM based decoding scheme, we
have taken Gaussian noise as a test case. We generate a data set using
125 images and 25 different keys. Polynomial kernel of SVM has
achieved 100 percent accuracy on test data.
Abstract: This paper presents an exact pruning algorithm with
adaptive pruning interval for general dynamic neural networks
(GDNN). GDNNs are artificial neural networks with internal dynamics.
All layers have feedback connections with time delays to the
same and to all other layers. The structure of the plant is unknown, so
the identification process is started with a larger network architecture
than necessary. During parameter optimization with the Levenberg-
Marquardt (LM) algorithm irrelevant weights of the dynamic neural
network are deleted in order to find a model for the plant as
simple as possible. The weights to be pruned are found by direct
evaluation of the training data within a sliding time window. The
influence of pruning on the identification system depends on the
network architecture at pruning time and the selected weight to be
deleted. As the architecture of the model is changed drastically during
the identification and pruning process, it is suggested to adapt the
pruning interval online. Two system identification examples show
the architecture selection ability of the proposed pruning approach.
Abstract: In this paper challenges associated with a new
generation of Computer Science students are examined. The mode of
education in tertiary institutes has progressed slowly while the needs
of students have changed rapidly in an increasingly technological
world. The major learning paradigms and learning theories within
these paradigms are studied to find a suitable strategy for educating
modern students. These paradigms include Behaviourism,
Constructivism, Humanism and Cogntivism. Social Learning theory
and Elaboration theory are two theories that are further examined and
a survey is done to determine how these strategies will be received by
students. The results and findings are evaluated and indicate that
students are fairly receptive to a method that incorporates both Social
Learning theory and Elaboration theory, but that some aspects of all
paradigms need to be implemented to create a balanced and effective
strategy with technology as foundation.
Abstract: This paper deals with the application of a fuzzy set in
measuring teachers- beliefs about mathematics. The vagueness of
beliefs was transformed into standard mathematical values using a
fuzzy preferences model. The study employed a fuzzy approach
questionnaire which consists of six attributes for measuring
mathematics teachers- beliefs about mathematics. The fuzzy conjoint
analysis approach based on fuzzy set theory was used to analyze the
data from twenty three mathematics teachers from four secondary
schools in Terengganu, Malaysia. Teachers- beliefs were recorded in
form of degrees of similarity and its levels of agreement. The
attribute 'Drills and practice is one of the best ways of learning
mathematics' scored the highest degree of similarity at 0. 79860 with
level of 'strongly agree'. The results showed that the teachers- beliefs
about mathematics were varied. This is shown by different levels of
agreement and degrees of similarity of the measured attributes.
Abstract: Markov games can be effectively used to design
controllers for nonlinear systems. The paper presents two novel
controller design algorithms by incorporating ideas from gametheory
literature that address safety and consistency issues of the
'learned' control strategy. A more widely used approach for
controller design is the H∞ optimal control, which suffers from high
computational demand and at times, may be infeasible. We generate
an optimal control policy for the agent (controller) via a simple
Linear Program enabling the controller to learn about the unknown
environment. The controller is facing an unknown environment and
in our formulation this environment corresponds to the behavior rules
of the noise modeled as the opponent. Proposed approaches aim to
achieve 'safe-consistent' and 'safe-universally consistent' controller
behavior by hybridizing 'min-max', 'fictitious play' and 'cautious
fictitious play' approaches drawn from game theory. We empirically
evaluate the approaches on a simulated Inverted Pendulum swing-up
task and compare its performance against standard Q learning.
Abstract: The way music is interpreted by the human brain is a very interesting topic, but also an intricate one. Although this domain has been studied for over a century, many gray areas remain in the understanding of music. Recent advances have enabled us to perform accurate measurements of the time taken by the human brain to interpret and assimilate a sound. Cognitive computing provides tools and development environments that facilitate human cognition simulation. ACT-R is a cognitive architecture which offers an environment for implementing human cognitive tasks. This project combines our understanding of the music interpretation by a human listener and the ACT-R cognitive architecture to build SINGER, a computerized simulation for listening and recalling songs. The results are similar to human experimental data. Simulation results also show how it is easier to remember short melodies than long melodies which require more trials to be recalled correctly.
Abstract: The Norwegian Military Academy (Army) has been
using a tactical simulator for the last two years. During this time
there has been some discussion concerning how to use the simulator
most efficiently and what type of learning one achieves by using the
simulator. The problem that is addressed in this paper is how
simulators can be used as a learning resource for students concerned
with developing their military profession. The aim of this article is to
create a wider consciousness regarding the use of a simulator while
educating officers in a military profession. The article discusses the
use of simulators from two different perspectives. The first
perspective deals with using the simulator as a computer game, and
the second perspective looks at the simulator as a socio-cultural
artefact. Furthermore the article discusses four different ways the
simulator can be looked upon as a useful learning resource when
educating students of a military profession.
Abstract: Ambient Intelligence (AmI) environments bring
significant potential to exploit sophisticated computer technology in
everyday life. In particular, the educational domain could be
significantly enhanced through AmI, as personalized and adapted
learning could be transformed from paper concepts and prototypes to
real-life scenarios. In this paper, an integrated framework is
presented, named ClassMATE, supporting ubiquitous computing and
communication in a school classroom. The main objective of
ClassMATE is to enable pervasive interaction and context aware
education in the technologically augmented classroom of the future.
Abstract: Mobile Learning (M-Learning) is a new technology
which is to enhance current learning practices and activities for all
people especially students and academic practitioners UTP is
currently, implemented two types of learning styles which are
conventional and electronic learning. In order to improve current
learning approaches, it is necessary for UTP to implement m-learning
in UTP. This paper presents a study on the students- perceptions on
mobile utilization in the learning practices in UTP. Besides, this
paper also presents a survey that was conducted among 82 students
from System Analysis and Design (SAD) course in UTP. The survey
includes basic information of mobile devices that have been used by
the students, opinions on current learning practices and also the
opinions regarding the m-learning implementation in the current
learning practices especially in SAD course. Based on the results of
the survey, majority of the students are using the mobile devices that
can support m-learning environment. Other than that, students also
agreed that current learning practices are ineffective and they believe
that m-learning utilization can improve the effectiveness of current
learning practices.
Abstract: Music segmentation is a key issue in music information
retrieval (MIR) as it provides an insight into the
internal structure of a composition. Structural information about
a composition can improve several tasks related to MIR such
as searching and browsing large music collections, visualizing
musical structure, lyric alignment, and music summarization.
The authors of this paper present the MTSSM framework, a twolayer
framework for the multi-track segmentation of symbolic
music. The strength of this framework lies in the combination of
existing methods for local track segmentation and the application
of global structure information spanning via multiple tracks.
The first layer of the MTSSM uses various string matching
techniques to detect the best candidate segmentations for each
track of a multi-track composition independently. The second
layer combines all single track results and determines the best
segmentation for each track in respect to the global structure of
the composition.
Abstract: Many real-world data sets consist of a very high dimensional feature space. Most clustering techniques use the distance or similarity between objects as a measure to build clusters. But in high dimensional spaces, distances between points become relatively uniform. In such cases, density based approaches may give better results. Subspace Clustering algorithms automatically identify lower dimensional subspaces of the higher dimensional feature space in which clusters exist. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm, ISC – Intelligent Subspace Clustering, which tries to overcome three major limitations of the existing state-of-art techniques. ISC determines the input parameter such as є – distance at various levels of Subspace Clustering which helps in finding meaningful clusters. The uniform parameters approach is not suitable for different kind of databases. ISC implements dynamic and adaptive determination of Meaningful clustering parameters based on hierarchical filtering approach. Third and most important feature of ISC is the ability of incremental learning and dynamic inclusion and exclusions of subspaces which lead to better cluster formation.
Abstract: We present a new algorithm for nonlinear dimensionality reduction that consistently uses global information, and that enables understanding the intrinsic geometry of non-convex manifolds. Compared to methods that consider only local information, our method appears to be more robust to noise. Unlike most methods that incorporate global information, the proposed approach automatically handles non-convexity of the data manifold. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm and compare it to state-of-the-art methods on synthetic as well as real data.
Abstract: There are a lot of extensions made to the classic model of multi-layer perceptron (MLP). A notable amount of them has been designed to hasten the learning process without considering the quality of generalization. The paper proposes a new MLP extension based on exploiting topology of the input layer of the network. Experimental results show the extended model to improve upon generalization capability in certain cases. The new model requires additional computational resources to compare to the classic model, nevertheless the loss in efficiency isn-t regarded to be significant.
Abstract: The myoelectric signal (MES) is one of the Biosignals
utilized in helping humans to control equipments. Recent approaches
in MES classification to control prosthetic devices employing pattern
recognition techniques revealed two problems, first, the classification
performance of the system starts degrading when the number of
motion classes to be classified increases, second, in order to solve the
first problem, additional complicated methods were utilized which
increase the computational cost of a multifunction myoelectric
control system. In an effort to solve these problems and to achieve a
feasible design for real time implementation with high overall
accuracy, this paper presents a new method for feature extraction in
MES recognition systems. The method works by extracting features
using Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) applied on the MES from
multiple channels, and then employs Fuzzy c-means (FCM)
algorithm to generate a measure that judges on features suitability for
classification. Finally, Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is
utilized to reduce the size of the data before computing the
classification accuracy with a multilayer perceptron neural network.
The proposed system produces powerful classification results (99%
accuracy) by using only a small portion of the original feature set.
Abstract: A suitable e-learning system management needs to
carry out a web-information system in order to allow integrated
fruition of data and metadata concerning the activities typical of elearning
environment. The definition of a “web information system"
for e-learning takes advantage of the potentialities of Web
technologies both as for the access to metadata present on the several
platforms, and as for the implementation of courseware which make
up the relative didactic environment. What information systems have
in common is the technological environment on which they are
generally implemented and the use of metadata in order to structure
information at all cognitive and organization levels. In this work we
are going to define a methodology for the implementation of a
specific web information system for an e-learning environment.
