Abstract: A recent neurospiking coding scheme for feature extraction from biosonar echoes of various plants is examined with avariety of stochastic classifiers. Feature vectors derived are employedin well-known stochastic classifiers, including nearest-neighborhood,single Gaussian and a Gaussian mixture with EM optimization.Classifiers' performances are evaluated by using cross-validation and bootstrapping techniques. It is shown that the various classifers perform equivalently and that the modified preprocessing configuration yields considerably improved results.
Abstract: Data mining incorporates a group of statistical
methods used to analyze a set of information, or a data set. It operates
with models and algorithms, which are powerful tools with the great
potential. They can help people to understand the patterns in certain
chunk of information so it is obvious that the data mining tools have
a wide area of applications. For example in the theoretical chemistry
data mining tools can be used to predict moleculeproperties or
improve computer-assisted drug design. Classification analysis is one
of the major data mining methodologies. The aim of thecontribution
is to create a classification model, which would be able to deal with a
huge data set with high accuracy. For this purpose logistic regression,
Bayesian logistic regression and random forest models were built
using R software. TheBayesian logistic regression in Latent GOLD
software was created as well. These classification methods belong to
supervised learning methods.
It was necessary to reduce data matrix dimension before construct
models and thus the factor analysis (FA) was used. Those models
were applied to predict the biological activity of molecules, potential
new drug candidates.
Abstract: The present work was conducted for Arsenic (III)
removal, which one of the most poisonous groundwater pollutants, by
synthetic nano size zerovalent iron (nZVI). Batch experiments were
performed to investigate the influence of As (III), nZVI
concentration, pH of solution and contact time on the efficiency of As
(III) removal. nZVI was synthesized by reduction of ferric chloride
by sodium borohydrid. SEM and XRD were used to determine
particle size and characterization of produced nanoparticles. Up to
99.9% removal efficiency for arsenic (III) was obtained by nZVI
dosage of 1 g/L at time equal to 10 min. and pH=7. It could be
concluded that the removal efficiency were enhanced with increasing
of ZVI dosage and reaction time, but decreased with increasing of
arsenic concentration and pH for nano sized ZVI. nZVI presented an
outstanding ability to remove As (III) due to not only a high surface
area and low particle size but also to high inherent activity.
Abstract: This paper seeks to develop simple yet practical and
efficient control scheme that enables cooperating arms to handle a
flexible beam. Specifically the problem studied herein is that of two
arms rigidly grasping a flexible beam and such capable of generating
forces/moments in such away as to move a flexible beam along a
predefined trajectory. The paper develops a sliding mode control law
that provides robustness against model imperfection and uncertainty.
It also provides an implicit stability proof. Simulation results for two
three joint arms moving a flexible beam, are presented to validate the
theoretical results.
Abstract: Particle detection in very noisy and low contrast images
is an active field of research in image processing. In this article, a
method is proposed for the efficient detection and sizing of subsurface
spherical particles, which is used for the processing of softly fused
Au nanoparticles. Transmission Electron Microscopy is used for
imaging the nanoparticles, and the proposed algorithm has been
tested with the two-dimensional projected TEM images obtained.
Results are compared with the data obtained by transmission optical
spectroscopy, as well as with conventional circular object detection
algorithms.
Abstract: In this paper, the dynamic analysis of fuel storage
tanks has been studied and some equations are presented for the
created fluid waves due to storage tank motions. Also, the equations
for finite elements of fluid and structure interactions, and boundary
conditions dominant on structure and fluid, were researched. In this
paper, a numerical simulation is performed for the dynamic analysis
of a storage tank contained a fluid. This simulation has carried out by
ANSYS software, using FSI solver (Fluid and Structure Interaction
solver), and by considering the simulated fluid dynamic motions due
to earthquake loading, based on velocities and movements of
structure and fluid according to all boundary conditions dominant on
structure and fluid.
Abstract: A new genetic algorithm, termed the 'optimum individual monogenetic genetic algorithm' (OIMGA), is presented whose properties have been deliberately designed to be well suited to hardware implementation. Specific design criteria were to ensure fast access to the individuals in the population, to keep the required silicon area for hardware implementation to a minimum and to incorporate flexibility in the structure for the targeting of a range of applications. The first two criteria are met by retaining only the current optimum individual, thereby guaranteeing a small memory requirement that can easily be stored in fast on-chip memory. Also, OIMGA can be easily reconfigured to allow the investigation of problems that normally warrant either large GA populations or individuals many genes in length. Local convergence is achieved in OIMGA by retaining elite individuals, while population diversity is ensured by continually searching for the best individuals in fresh regions of the search space. The results given in this paper demonstrate that both the performance of OIMGA and its convergence time are superior to those of a range of existing hardware GA implementations.
Abstract: In this work, the surgical theater of a local hospital in
KSA was analyzed using simulation. The focus was on attempting to
answer questions related to how many Operating Rooms (ORs) to
open and to analyze the performance of the surgical theater in
general and mainly the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to assist
making decisions regarding PACU staffing. The surgical theater
consists of ten operating rooms and the PACU unit which has a
maximum capacity of fifteen beds. Different sequencing rules to
sequence the surgical cases were tested and the Longest Case First
(LCF) were superior to others. The results of the different
alternatives developed and tested can be used by the manager as a
tool to plan and manage the OR and PACU
Abstract: The concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in atmospheric aerosol samples collected at a rural site in Hungary (K-puszta, summer 2008), a boreal forest (Hyytiälä,
April 2007) and a polluted rural area in Italy (San Pietro Capofiume, Po Valley, April 2008). A clear distinction between “clean" and “polluted" periods was observed. Concentrations obtained for Hyytiälä are significantly lower than those for the other two sites. Source reconciliation was performed using diagnostic parameters, such as the carbon preference index and ratios between PAH. The presence of an unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons, especially for the Finnish and Italian samples, is indicative of petrogenic inputs. In K-puszta, the aliphatic hydrocarbons are dominated by leaf wax n-alkanes. The long range transport of anthropogenic pollution contributed to the Finnish aerosol. Industrial activities and vehicular emissions represent major sources in San Pietro Capofiume. PAH in K-puszta consist of both pyrogenic and petrogenic compounds.
Abstract: This paper presents a low cost automatic system for
sampling the electric field in a limited area. The scanning area is a
flat surface parallel to the ground at a selected height. We discuss
in detail the hardware, software and all the arrangements involved
in the system operation. In order to show the system performance
we include a campaign of narrow band measurements with 6017
sample points in the surroundings of a cellular base station. A
commercial isotropic antenna with three orthogonal axes was used
as sampling device. The results are analyzed in terms of its space
average, standard deviation and statistical distribution.
Abstract: This paper describes the optimization of a complex
dairy farm simulation model using two quite different methods of
optimization, the Genetic algorithm (GA) and the Lipschitz
Branch-and-Bound (LBB) algorithm. These techniques have been
used to improve an agricultural system model developed by Dexcel
Limited, New Zealand, which describes a detailed representation of
pastoral dairying scenarios and contains an 8-dimensional parameter
space. The model incorporates the sub-models of pasture growth and
animal metabolism, which are themselves complex in many cases.
Each evaluation of the objective function, a composite 'Farm
Performance Index (FPI)', requires simulation of at least a one-year
period of farm operation with a daily time-step, and is therefore
computationally expensive. The problem of visualization of the
objective function (response surface) in high-dimensional spaces is
also considered in the context of the farm optimization problem.
Adaptations of the sammon mapping and parallel coordinates
visualization are described which help visualize some important
properties of the model-s output topography. From this study, it is
found that GA requires fewer function evaluations in optimization
than the LBB algorithm.
Abstract: This paper presents positive and negative full-wave
rectifier. The proposed structure is based on OTA using
commercially available ICs (LT1228). The features of the proposed
circuit are that: it can rectify and amplify voltage signal with
controllable output magnitude via input bias current: the output
voltage is free from temperature variation. The circuit description
merely consists of 1 single ended and 3 fully differential OTAs. The
performance of the proposed circuit are investigated though PSpice.
They show that the proposed circuit can function as positive/negative
full-wave rectifier, where the voltage input wide-dynamic range from
-5V to 5V. Furthermore, the output voltage is slightly dependent on
the temperature variations.
Abstract: Smith Predictor control is theoretically a good solution to the problem of controlling the time delay systems. However, it seldom gets use because it is almost impossible to find out a precise mathematical model of the practical system and very sensitive to uncertain system with variable time-delay. In this paper is concerned with a design method of smith predictor for temperature control system by Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM). The simulation results show that the control system with smith predictor design by CDM is stable and robust whilst giving the desired time domain system performance.
Abstract: The aim of the study was to identify seat belt wearing
factor among road users in Malaysia. Evidence-based approach
through in-depth crash investigation was utilised to determine the
intended objectives. The objective was scoped into crashes
investigated by Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research
(MIROS) involving passenger vehicles within 2007 and 2010. Crash
information of a total of 99 crash cases involving 240 vehicles and
864 occupants were obtained during the study period. Statistical test
and logistic regression analysis have been performed. Results of the
analysis revealed that gender, seat position and age were associated
with seat belt wearing compliance in Malaysia. Males are 97.6%
more likely to wear seat belt compared to females (95% CI 1.317 to
2.964). By seat position, the finding indicates that frontal occupants
were 82 times more likely to be wearing seat belt (95% CI 30.199 to
225.342) as compared to rear occupants. It is also important to note
that the odds of seat belt wearing increased by about 2.64% (95% CI
1.0176 to 1.0353) for every one year increase in age. This study is
essential in understanding the Malaysian tendency in belting up
while being occupied in a vehicle. The factors highlighted in this
study should be emphasized in road safety education in order to
increase seat belt wearing rate in this country and ultimately in
preventing deaths due to road crashes.
Abstract: This paper proposes a low power SRAM based on
five transistor SRAM cell. Proposed SRAM uses novel word-line
decoding such that, during read/write operation, only selected cell
connected to bit-line whereas, in conventional SRAM (CV-SRAM),
all cells in selected row connected to their bit-lines, which in turn
develops differential voltages across all bit-lines, and this makes
energy consumption on unselected bit-lines. In proposed SRAM
memory array divided into two halves and this causes data-line
capacitance to reduce. Also proposed SRAM uses one bit-line and
thus has lower bit-line leakage compared to CV-SRAM.
Furthermore, the proposed SRAM incurs no area overhead, and has
comparable read/write performance versus the CV-SRAM.
Simulation results in standard 0.25μm CMOS technology shows in
worst case proposed SRAM has 80% smaller dynamic energy
consumption in each cycle compared to CV-SRAM. Besides, energy
consumption in each cycle of proposed SRAM and CV-SRAM
investigated analytically, the results of which are in good agreement
with the simulation results.
Abstract: This paper presents a wrap-around view system with 4
smart cameras module and remote motion mobile robot control equipped with smart camera module system. The two-level scheme for
remote motion control with smart-pad(IPAD) is introduced on this
paper. In the low-level, the wrap-around view system is controlled or operated to keep the reference points lying around top view image
plane. On the higher level, a robot image based motion controller is utilized to drive the mobile platform to reach the desired position or
track the desired motion planning through image feature feedback. The
design wrap-around view system equipped on presents such advantages as follows: 1) a satisfactory solution for the FOV and affine
problem; 2) free of any complex and constraint with robot pose. The performance of the wrap-around view equipped on mobile robot
remote control is proven by experimental results.
Abstract: Tread design has evolved over the years to achieve the common tread pattern used in current vehicles. However, to meet safety and comfort requirements, tread design considers more than one design factor. Tread design must consider the grip and drainage, and the manner in which to reduce rolling noise, which is one of the main factors considered by manufacturers. The main objective of this study was the application the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique to simulate the contact surface of the tire and ground. The results demonstrated an air-Pumping and large pressure drop effect in the process of contact surface. The results also revealed that the pressure can be used to analyze sound pressure level (SPL).
Abstract: With major technological advances and to reduce the
cost of training apprentices for real-time critical systems, it was
necessary the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems for
training apprentices in these systems. These systems, in general, have
interactive features so that the learning is actually more efficient,
making the learner more familiar with the mechanism in question. In
the home stage of learning, tests are performed to obtain the student's
income, a measure on their use. The aim of this paper is to present a
framework to model an Intelligent Tutoring Systems using the UML
language. The various steps of the analysis are considered the
diagrams required to build a general model, whose purpose is to
present the different perspectives of its development.
Abstract: A study was undertaken to assess the potential of an
Algal Turf Scrubber to remove nitrogen from aquaculture effluent to
reduce environmental pollution. High total ammonia nitrogen
concentrations were introduced to an Algal Turf Scrubber developed
under varying hydraulic surface loading rates of African catfish
(Clarius gariepinus) effluent in a recirculating aquaculture system.
Nutrient removal rates were not affected at total suspended solids
concentration of up to 0.04g TSS/l (P > 0.05). Nitrogen removal
rates 0.93-0.99g TAN/m²/d were recorded at very high loading rates
3.76-3.81 g TAN/m²/d. Total ammonia removal showed ½ order
kinetics between 1.6 to 2.3mg/l Total Ammonia Nitrogen
concentrations. Nitrogen removal increased with its loading, which
increased with hydraulic surface loading rate. Total Ammonia
Nitrogen removal by Algal turf scrubber was higher than reported
values for fluidized bed filters and trickling filters. The algal turf
scrubber also effectively removed nitrate thereby reducing the need
for water exchange.
Abstract: This paper attempts to establish the fact that Multi
State Network Classification is essential for performance
enhancement of Transport protocols over Satellite based Networks. A
model to classify Multi State network condition taking into
consideration both congestion and channel error is evolved. In order
to arrive at such a model an analysis of the impact of congestion and
channel error on RTT values has been carried out using ns2. The
analysis results are also reported in the paper. The inference drawn
from this analysis is used to develop a novel statistical RTT based
model for multi state network classification.
An Adaptive Multi State Proactive Transport Protocol consisting
of Proactive Slow Start, State based Error Recovery, Timeout Action
and Proactive Reduction is proposed which uses the multi state
network state classification model. This paper also confirms through
detail simulation and analysis that a prior knowledge about the
overall characteristics of the network helps in enhancing the
performance of the protocol over satellite channel which is
significantly affected due to channel noise and congestion.
The necessary augmentation of ns2 simulator is done for
simulating the multi state network classification logic. This
simulation has been used in detail evaluation of the protocol under
varied levels of congestion and channel noise. The performance
enhancement of this protocol with reference to established protocols
namely TCP SACK and Vegas has been discussed. The results as
discussed in this paper clearly reveal that the proposed protocol
always outperforms its peers and show a significant improvement in
very high error conditions as envisaged in the design of the protocol.
