Abstract: The Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) due to timevarying
fading channel is the main cause of the loss of orthogonality
among OFDM subcarriers which is linked to inter-carrier interference
(ICI). Hence, it is necessary to precisely estimate and compensate the
CFO. Especially for mobile broadband communications, CFO and
channel gain also have to be estimated and tracked to maintain the
system performance. Thus, synchronization pilots are embedded in
every OFDM symbol to track the variations. In this paper, we present
the pilot scheme for both channel and CFO estimation where channel
estimation process can be carried out with only one OFDM symbol.
Additional, the proposed pilot scheme also provides better
performance in CFO estimation comparing with the conventional
orthogonal pilot scheme due to the increasing of signal-tointerference
ratio.
Abstract: The effect of the number of quantum dot (QD) layers
on the saturated gain of doped QD semiconductor optical amplifiers
(SOAs) has been studied using multi-population coupled rate
equations. The developed model takes into account the effect of
carrier coupling between adjacent layers. It has been found that
increasing the number of QD layers (K) increases the unsaturated
optical gain for K
Abstract: Search for a tertiary substructure that geometrically
matches the 3D pattern of the binding site of a well-studied protein provides a solution to predict protein functions. In our previous work,
a web server has been built to predict protein-ligand binding sites
based on automatically extracted templates. However, a drawback of such templates is that the web server was prone to resulting in many
false positive matches. In this study, we present a sequence-order constraint to reduce the false positive matches of using automatically
extracted templates to predict protein-ligand binding sites. The binding site predictor comprises i) an automatically constructed template library and ii) a local structure alignment algorithm for
querying the library. The sequence-order constraint is employed to
identify the inconsistency between the local regions of the query protein and the templates. Experimental results reveal that the sequence-order constraint can largely reduce the false positive matches and is effective for template-based binding site prediction.
Abstract: Pattern recognition is the research area of Artificial Intelligence that studies the operation and design of systems that recognize patterns in the data. Important application areas are image analysis, character recognition, fingerprint classification, speech analysis, DNA sequence identification, man and machine diagnostics, person identification and industrial inspection. The interest in improving the classification systems of data analysis is independent from the context of applications. In fact, in many studies it is often the case to have to recognize and to distinguish groups of various objects, which requires the need for valid instruments capable to perform this task. The objective of this article is to show several methodologies of Artificial Intelligence for data classification applied to biomedical patterns. In particular, this work deals with the realization of a Computer-Aided Detection system (CADe) that is able to assist the radiologist in identifying types of mammary tumor lesions. As an additional biomedical application of the classification systems, we present a study conducted on blood samples which shows how these methods may help to distinguish between carriers of Thalassemia (or Mediterranean Anaemia) and healthy subjects.
Abstract: Hexapod Machine Tool (HMT) is a parallel robot
mostly based on Stewart platform. Identification of kinematic
parameters of HMT is an important step of calibration procedure. In
this paper an algorithm is presented for identifying the kinematic
parameters of HMT using inverse kinematics error model. Based on
this algorithm, the calibration procedure is simulated. Measurement
configurations with maximum observability are decided as the first
step of this algorithm for a robust calibration. The errors occurring in
various configurations are illustrated graphically. It has been shown
that the boundaries of the workspace should be searched for the
maximum observability of errors. The importance of using
configurations with sufficient observability in calibrating hexapod
machine tools is verified by trial calibration with two different
groups of randomly selected configurations. One group is selected to
have sufficient observability and the other is in disregard of the
observability criterion. Simulation results confirm the validity of the
proposed identification algorithm.
Abstract: CT assessment of postoperative spine is challenging in the presence of metal streak artifacts that could deteriorate the
quality of CT images. In this paper, we studied the influence of different acquisition parameters on the magnitude of metal streaking.
A water-bath phantom was constructed with metal insertion similar with postoperative spine assessment. The phantom was scanned with
different acquisition settings and acquired data were reconstructed
using various reconstruction settings. Standardized ROIs were defined within streaking region for image analysis. The result shows
increased kVp and mAs enhanced SNR values by reducing image
noise. Sharper kernel enhanced image quality compared to smooth
kernel, but produced more noise in the images with higher CT fluctuation. The noise between both kernels were significantly
different (P
Abstract: Sensory nerves in the foot play an important part in the diagnosis of various neuropathydisorders, especially in diabetes mellitus. However, a detailed description of the anatomical distribution of the nerves is currently lacking. A computationalmodel of the afferent nerves inthe foot may bea useful tool for the study of diabetic neuropathy. In this study, we present the development of an anatomically-based model of various major sensory nerves of the sole and dorsal sidesof the foot. In addition, we presentan algorithm for generating synthetic somatosensory nerve networks in the big-toe region of a right foot model. The algorithm was based on a modified version of the Monte Carlo algorithm, with the capability of being able to vary the intra-epidermal nerve fiber density in differentregionsof the foot model. Preliminary results from the combinedmodel show the realistic anatomical structure of the major nerves as well as the smaller somatosensory nerves of the foot. The model may now be developed to investigate the functional outcomes of structural neuropathyindiabetic patients.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to reduce the amount of incomplete coating of stainless steel washers in the electrodeposition painting process by using an experimental design technique. The surface preparation was found to be a major cause of painted surface quality. The influence of pretreating and painting process parameters, which are cleaning time, chemical concentration and shape of hanger were studied. A 23 factorial design with two replications was performed. The analysis of variance for the designed experiment showed the great influence of cleaning time and shape of hanger. From this study, optimized cleaning time was determined and a newly designed electrical conductive hanger was proved to be superior to the original one. The experimental verification results showed that the amount of incomplete coating defects decreased from 4% to 1.02% and operation cost decreased by 10.5%.
Abstract: In the present study, the surface temperature history of the adaptor part in a two-stage supersonic launch vehicle is accurately predicted. The full Navier-Stokes equations are used to estimate the aerodynamic heat flux and the one-dimensional heat conduction in solid phase is used to compute the temperature history. The instantaneous surface temperature is used to improve the applied heat flux, to improve the accuracy of the results.
Abstract: Diatoms are an important group of aquatic ecosystems and diatom-based indices are increasingly becoming important tools for the assessment of ecological conditions in lotic systems. Although the studies are very limited about Turkish rivers, diatom indices were used for monitoring rivers in different basins. In the present study, we used OMNIDIA program for estimation of stream quality. Some indices have less sensitive (IDP, WAT, LOBO, GENRE, TID, CEE, PT), intermediate sensitivities (IDSE, DESCY, IPS, DI-CH, SLA, IDAP), the others higher sensitivities (SID, IBD, SHE, EPI-D). Among the investigated diatom communities, only a few taxa indicated alfa-mesosaprobity and polysaprobity. Most of the sites were characterized by a great relative contribution of eutraphent and tolerant ones as well as oligosaprobic and betamesosaprobic diatoms. In general, SID and IBD indices gave the best results. This study suggests that the structure of benthic diatom communities and diatom indices, especially SID, can be applied for monitoring rivers in Southern Turkey.
Abstract: The benefits of physical activity for children are promoted widely and well understood; however factors which impact on children-s beliefs and attitudes towards physical education need to be explored in more detail. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how primary school children value and perceive their involvement in physical education (PE) classes through the use of drawings. While this type of data collection has been used previously to determine a child-s response to specific health education classes, such as drug education, to the best of our knowledge it has not been used in the context of PE. Results from this study showed that kindergarten children found PE classes fun and engaging. Children in Year 4 and Year 6 were less satisfied with PE classes because of the activities offered, the lack of opportunity to play sport, and perception that teachers did not appear to value this area of the curriculum.

Abstract: An improved topology of a voltage-fed quasi-resonant
soft switching LCrCdc series-parallel half bridge inverter with a constant-frequency for electronic ballast applications is proposed in this paper. This new topology introduces a low-cost solution to
reduce switching losses and circuit rating to achieve high-efficiency
ballast. Switching losses effect on ballast efficiency is discussed
through experimental point of view. In this discussion, an improved
topology in which accomplishes soft switching operation over a wide
power regulation range is proposed. The proposed structure uses reverse recovery diode to provide better operation for the ballast system. A symmetrical pulse wide modulation (PWM) control scheme is implemented to regulate a wide range of out-put power.
Simulation results are kindly verified with the experimental
measurements obtained by ballast-lamp laboratory prototype. Different load conditions are provided in order to clarify the
performance of the proposed converter.
Abstract: Variable ordering heuristics are used in constraint satisfaction algorithms. Different characteristics of various variable ordering heuristics are complementary. Therefore we have tried to get the advantages of all heuristics to improve search algorithms performance for solving constraint satisfaction problems. This paper considers combinations based on products and quotients, and then a newer form of combination based on weighted sums of ratings from a set of base heuristics, some of which result in definite improvements in performance.
Abstract: The H.264/AVC standard is a highly efficient video
codec providing high-quality videos at low bit-rates. As employing
advanced techniques, the computational complexity has been
increased. The complexity brings about the major problem in the
implementation of a real-time encoder and decoder. Parallelism is the
one of approaches which can be implemented by multi-core system.
We analyze macroblock-level parallelism which ensures the same bit
rate with high concurrency of processors. In order to reduce the
encoding time, dynamic data partition based on macroblock region is
proposed. The data partition has the advantages in load balancing and
data communication overhead. Using the data partition, the encoder
obtains more than 3.59x speed-up on a four-processor system. This
work can be applied to other multimedia processing applications.
Abstract: This paper describes a study of geometrically
nonlinear free vibration of thin circular functionally graded (CFGP)
plates resting on Winkler elastic foundations. The material properties
of the functionally graded composites examined here are assumed to
be graded smoothly and continuously through the direction of the
plate thickness according to a power law and are estimated using the
rule of mixture. The theoretical model is based on the classical Plate
theory and the Von-Kármán geometrical nonlinearity assumptions.
An homogenization procedure (HP) is developed to reduce the
problem considered here to that of isotropic homogeneous circular
plates resting on Winkler foundation. Hamilton-s principle is applied
and a multimode approach is derived to calculate the fundamental
nonlinear frequency parameters which are found to be in a good
agreement with the published results. On the other hand, the
influence of the foundation parameters on the nonlinear fundamental
frequency has also been analysed.
Abstract: Emerging Bio-engineering fields such as Brain
Computer Interfaces, neuroprothesis devices and modeling and
simulation of neural networks have led to increased research activity
in algorithms for the detection, isolation and classification of Action
Potentials (AP) from noisy data trains. Current techniques in the field
of 'unsupervised no-prior knowledge' biosignal processing include
energy operators, wavelet detection and adaptive thresholding. These
tend to bias towards larger AP waveforms, AP may be missed due to
deviations in spike shape and frequency and correlated noise
spectrums can cause false detection. Also, such algorithms tend to
suffer from large computational expense.
A new signal detection technique based upon the ideas of phasespace
diagrams and trajectories is proposed based upon the use of a
delayed copy of the AP to highlight discontinuities relative to
background noise. This idea has been used to create algorithms that
are computationally inexpensive and address the above problems.
Distinct AP have been picked out and manually classified from
real physiological data recorded from a cockroach. To facilitate
testing of the new technique, an Auto Regressive Moving Average
(ARMA) noise model has been constructed bases upon background
noise of the recordings. Along with the AP classification means this
model enables generation of realistic neuronal data sets at arbitrary
signal to noise ratio (SNR).
Abstract: In present work the problem of the ITER fusion
plasma neutron source parameter reconstruction using only the
Vertical Neutron Camera data was solved. The possibility of neutron
source parameter reconstruction was estimated by the numerical
simulations and the analysis of adequateness of mathematic model
was performed. The neutron source was specified in a parametric
form. The numerical analysis of solution stability with respect to data
distortion was done. The influence of the data errors on the
reconstructed parameters is shown:
• is reconstructed with errors less than 4% at all examined values
of δ (until 60%);
• is determined with errors less than 10% when δ do not overcome
5%;
• is reconstructed with relative error more than 10 %;
• integral intensity of the neutron source is determined with error
10% while δ error is less than 15%;
where -error of signal measurements, (R0,Z0), the plasma center

Abstract: This paper characterizes the effects of artificial short
term aging in the laboratory on the rheological properties of virgin
80/100 penetration grade asphalt binder. After several years in
service, asphalt mixture started to deteriorate due to aging. Aging is a
complex physico-chemical phenomenon that influences asphalt
binder rheological properties causing a deterioration in asphalt
mixture performance. To ascertain asphalt binder aging effects, the
virgin, artificially aged and extracted asphalt binder were tested via
the Rolling Thin film Oven (RTFO), Dynamic Shear Rheometer
(DSR) and Rotational Viscometer (RV). A comparative study
between laboratory and field aging conditions were also carried out.
The results showed that the specimens conditioned for 85 minutes
inside the RTFO was insufficient to simulate the actual short term
aging caused that took place in the field under Malaysian field
conditions
Abstract: Earlier studies in kinship networks have primarily
focused on observing the social relationships existing between family
relatives. In this study, we pre-identified hubs in the network to
investigate if they could play a catalyst role in the transfer of physical
information. We conducted a case study of a ceremony performed in
one of the families of a small Hindu community – the Uttar Rarhi
Kayasthas. Individuals (n = 168) who resided in 11 geographically
dispersed regions were contacted through our hub-based
representation. We found that using this representation, over 98% of
the individuals were successfully contacted within the stipulated
period. The network also demonstrated a small-world property, with
an average geodesic distance of 3.56.
