Abstract: Software development is moving towards agility with use cases and scenarios being used for requirements stories. Estimates of software costs are becoming even more important than before as effects of delays is much larger in successive short releases context of agile development. Thus, this paper reports on the development of new linear use case based software cost estimation model applicable in the very early stages of software development being based on simple metric. Evaluation showed that accuracy of estimates varies between 43% and 55% of actual effort of historical test projects. These results outperformed those of wellknown models when applied in the same context. Further work is being carried out to improve the performance of the proposed model when considering the effect of non-functional requirements.
Abstract: Summarizing skills have been introduced to English
syllabus in secondary school in Malaysia to evaluate student-s comprehension for a given text where it requires students to employ several strategies to produce the summary. This paper reports on our effort to develop a computer-based summarization assessment system
that detects the strategies used by the students in producing their
summaries. Sentence decomposition of expert-written summaries is
used to analyze how experts produce their summary sentences. From
the analysis, we identified seven summarizing strategies and their
rules which are then transformed into a set of heuristic rules on how
to determine the summarizing strategies. We developed an algorithm
based on the heuristic rules and performed some experiments to
evaluate and support the technique proposed.
Abstract: With the resource exhaustion, bad affections of human
activities and the awakening of the human rights, the corporate social
responsibility became popular corporate strategy achieving
sustainable development of both corporation and society. The issue of
Guideline of Chinese Corporate Social Responsibility Report
promotes greatly corporation to take social responsibility. This paper
built the index system according to this guideline and takes the textile
industry as an example, uses the analytical hierarchy process to
identify the weightings of different responsibilities of corporation to
guide the corporate social responsibility performance assessment.

of emerging products.
Abstract: The copper flotation tailings from Konkola Copper
mine in Nchanga, Zambia were used in the study. The purpose of this
study was to determine the leaching characteristics of the tailings
material prior and after the physical beneficiation process is
employed. The Knelson gravity concentrator (KC-MD3) was used for
the beneficiation process. The copper leaching efficiencies and
impurity co-extraction percentages in both the upgraded and the raw
feed material were determined at different pH levels and temperature.
It was observed that the copper extraction increased with an increase
in temperature and a decrease in pH levels. In comparison to the raw
feed sample, the upgraded sample reported a maximum copper
extraction of 69% which was 9%, higher than raw feed % extractions.
The impurity carry over was reduced from 18% to 4 % on the
upgraded sample. The reduction in impurity co-extraction was as a
result of the removal of the reactive gangue elements during the
upgrading process, this minimized the number of side reaction
occurring during leaching.
Abstract: This paper reports on the enhanced photoluminescence
(PL) of nanocomposites through the layered structuring of phosphor
and quantum dot (QD). Green phosphor of Sr2SiO4:Eu, red QDs of
CdSe/CdS/CdZnS/ZnS core-multishell, and thermo-curable resin
were used for this study. Two kinds of composite (layered and mixed)
were prepared, and the schemes for optical energy transfer between
QD and phosphor were suggested and investigated based on PL decay
characteristics. It was found that the layered structure is more effective
than the mixed one in the respects of PL intensity, PL decay and
thermal loss. When this layered nanocomposite (QDs on phosphor) is
used to make white light emitting diode (LED), the brightness is
increased by 37 %, and the color rendering index (CRI) value is raised
to 88.4 compared to the mixed case of 80.4.
Abstract: In order to maximize efficiency of an information management platform and to assist in decision making, the collection, storage and analysis of performance-relevant data has become of fundamental importance. This paper addresses the merits and drawbacks provided by the OLAP paradigm for efficiently navigating large volumes of performance measurement data hierarchically. The system managers or database administrators navigate through adequately (re)structured measurement data aiming to detect performance bottlenecks, identify causes for performance problems or assessing the impact of configuration changes on the system and its representative metrics. Of particular importance is finding the root cause of an imminent problem, threatening availability and performance of an information system. Leveraging OLAP techniques, in contrast to traditional static reporting, this is supposed to be accomplished within moderate amount of time and little processing complexity. It is shown how OLAP techniques can help improve understandability and manageability of measurement data and, hence, improve the whole Performance Analysis process.
Abstract: To understand working features of a micro combustor,
a computer code has been developed to study combustion of
hydrogen–air mixture in a series of chambers with same shape aspect
ratio but various dimensions from millimeter to micrometer level.
The prepared algorithm and the computer code are capable of
modeling mixture effects in different fluid flows including chemical
reactions, viscous and mass diffusion effects. The effect of various
heat transfer conditions at chamber wall, e.g. adiabatic wall, with
heat loss and heat conduction within the wall, on the combustion is
analyzed. These thermal conditions have strong effects on the
combustion especially when the chamber dimension goes smaller and
the ratio of surface area to volume becomes larger.
Both factors, such as larger heat loss through the chamber wall
and smaller chamber dimension size, may lead to the thermal
quenching of micro-scale combustion. Through such systematic
numerical analysis, a proper operation space for the micro-combustor
is suggested, which may be used as the guideline for microcombustor
design. In addition, the results reported in this paper
illustrate that the numerical simulation can be one of the most
powerful and beneficial tools for the micro-combustor design,
optimization and performance analysis.
Abstract: In this report we present a rule-based approach to
detect anomalous telephone calls. The method described here uses
subscriber usage CDR (call detail record) data sampled over two
observation periods: study period and test period. The study period
contains call records of customers- non-anomalous behaviour.
Customers are first grouped according to their similar usage
behaviour (like, average number of local calls per week, etc). For
customers in each group, we develop a probabilistic model to describe
their usage. Next, we use maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to
estimate the parameters of the calling behaviour. Then we determine
thresholds by calculating acceptable change within a group. MLE is
used on the data in the test period to estimate the parameters of the
calling behaviour. These parameters are compared against thresholds.
Any deviation beyond the threshold is used to raise an alarm. This
method has the advantage of identifying local anomalies as compared
to techniques which identify global anomalies. The method is tested
for 90 days of study data and 10 days of test data of telecom
customers. For medium to large deviations in the data in test window,
the method is able to identify 90% of anomalous usage with less than
1% false alarm rate.
Abstract: This paper presents a new method for estimating the mean curve of impulse voltage waveforms that are recorded during impulse tests. In practice, these waveforms are distorted by noise, oscillations and overshoot. The problem is formulated as an estimation problem. Estimation of the current signal parameters is achieved using a fast and accurate technique. The method is based on discrete dynamic filtering algorithm (DDF). The main advantage of the proposed technique is its ability in producing the estimates in a very short time and at a very high degree of accuracy. The algorithm uses sets of digital samples of the recorded impulse waveform. The proposed technique has been tested using simulated data of practical waveforms. Effects of number of samples and data window size are studied. Results are reported and discussed.
Abstract: A company CSR commitment, as stated in its Social
Report is, actually, perceived by its stakeholders? And in what
measure? Moreover, are stakeholders satisfied with the company
CSR efforts? Indeed, business returns from Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) practices, such as company reputation and
customer loyalty, depend heavily on how stakeholders perceive the
company social conduct. In this paper, we propose a methodology to
assess a company CSR commitment based on Global Reporting
Initiative (GRI) indicators, Content Analysis and a CSR positioning
matrix. We evaluate three aspects of CSR: the company commitment
disclosed through its Social Report; the company commitment
perceived by its stakeholders; the CSR commitment that stakeholders
require to the company. The positioning of the company under study
in the CSR matrix is based on the comparison among the three
commitment aspects (disclosed, perceived, required) and it allows
assessment and development of CSR strategies.
Abstract: Caching was suggested as a solution for reducing bandwidth utilization and minimizing query latency in mobile environments. Over the years, different caching approaches have been proposed, some relying on the server to broadcast reports periodically informing of the updated data while others allowed the clients to request for the data whenever needed. Until recently a hybrid cache consistency scheme Scalable Asynchronous Cache Consistency Scheme SACCS was proposed, which combined the two different approaches benefits- and is proved to be more efficient and scalable. Nevertheless, caching has its limitations too, due to the limited cache size and the limited bandwidth, which makes the implementation of cache replacement strategy an important aspect for improving the cache consistency algorithms. In this thesis, we proposed a new cache replacement strategy, the Least Unified Value strategy (LUV) to replace the Least Recently Used (LRU) that SACCS was based on. This paper studies the advantages and the drawbacks of the new proposed strategy, comparing it with different categories of cache replacement strategies.
Abstract: Ethanol has become more attractive in fuel industry
either as fuel itself or an additive that helps enhancing the octane
number and combustibility of gasoline. This research studied a
pressure swing adsorption using cassava-based adsorbent prepared
from mixture of cassava starch and cassava pulp for dehydration of
ethanol vapor. The apparatus used in the experiments consisted of
double adsorption columns, an evaporator, and a vacuum pump. The
feed solution contained 90-92 %wt of ethanol. Three process
variables: adsorption temperatures (110, 120 and 130°C), adsorption
pressures (1 and 2 bar gauge) and feed vapor flow rate (25, 50 and 75
% valve opening of the evaporator) were investigated. According to
the experimental results, the optimal operating condition for this
system was found to be at 2 bar gauge for adsorption pressure, 120°C
for adsorption temperature and 25% valve opening of the evaporator.
Production of 1.48 grams of ethanol with concentration higher than
99.5 wt% per gram of adsorbent was obtained. PSA with cassavabased
adsorbent reported in this study could be an alternative method
for production of nearly anhydrous ethanol. Dehydration of ethanol
vapor achieved in this study is due to an interaction between free
hydroxyl group on the glucose units of the starch and the water
molecules.
Abstract: Today, canines are still used effectively in acceleration detection situation. However, this method is becoming impractical in modern age and a new automated replacement to the canine is required. This paper reports the design of an innovative accelerant detector. Designing an accelerant detector is a long process as is any design process; therefore, a solution to the need for a mobile, effective accelerant detector is hereby presented. The device is simple and efficient to ensure that any accelerant detection can be conducted quickly and easily. The design utilizes Ultra Violet (UV) light to detect the accelerant. When the UV light shines on an accelerant, the hydrocarbons in the accelerant emit florescence. The advantages of using the UV light to detect accelerant are also outlined in this paper. The mobility of the device is achieved by using a Direct Current (DC) motor to run tank tracks. Tank tracks were chosen as to ensure that the device will be mobile in the rough terrain of a fire site. The materials selected for the various parts are also presented. A Solid Works Simulation was also conducted on the stresses in the shafts and the results are presented. This design is an innovative solution which offers a user friendly interface. The design is also environmentally friendly, ecologically sound and safe to use.
Abstract: In this paper, a thermal model of cast- resin dry type
transformer is proposed. The proposed thermal model is solved by
finite element technique to get the temperature at any location of the
transformer. The basic modes of heat transfer such as conduction;
convection and radiation are used to get the steady state temperature
distribution of the transformer. The predicted temperatures are
compared with experimental results reported in this paper and it is
found a good agreement between them. The effects of various
parameters such as width of air duct, ambient temperature and
emissivity of the outer surface were also studied.
Abstract: In this paper, four carbazole-based D-D-π-A organic
dyes code as CCT2A, CCT3A, CCT1PA and CCT2PA were reported.
A series of these organic dyes containing identical donor and
acceptor group but different π-system. The effect of replacing of
thiophene by phenyl thiophene as π-system on the physical
properties has been focused. The structural, energetic properties and
absorption spectra were theoretically investigated by means of
Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density
Functional Theory (TD-DFT). The results show that nonplanar
conformation due to steric hindrance in donor part (cabazolecarbazole
unit) of dye molecule can prevent unfavorable dye
aggregation. By means of the TD-DFT method, the absorption
spectra were calculated by B3LYP and BHandHLYP to study the
affect of hybrid functional on the excitation energy (Eg). The results
revealed the increasing of thiophene units not only resulted in
decreasing of Eg, but also found the shifting of absorption spectra to
higher wavelength. TD-DFT/BHandHLYP calculated results are
more strongly agreed with the experimental data than B3LYP
functions. Furthermore, the adsorptions of CCT2A and CCT3A on the
TiO2 anatase (101) surface were carried out by mean of the chemical
periodic calculation. The result exhibit the strong adsorption energy.
The calculated results provide our new organic dyes can be
effectively used as dye for Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSC).
Abstract: Developers need to evaluate software's performance to make software efficient. This paper suggests a performance evaluation system for embedded software. The suggested system consists of code analyzer, testing agents, data analyzer, and report viewer. The code analyzer inserts additional code dependent on target system into source code and compiles the source code. The testing agents execute performance test. The data analyzer translates raw-level results data to class-level APIs for reporting viewer. The report viewer offers users graphical report views by using the APIs. We hope that the suggested tool will be useful for embedded-related software development, because developers can easily and intuitively analyze software's performance and resource utilization.
Abstract: We report a novel fusion tag for expressing
recombinant proteins in E. coli. The fusion tag is the C-terminus part
of the human GMCSF gene comprising 45 amino acids, which aid in
over expression of otherwise non expressible genes. Expression of
hIFN a2b with this fusion tag also escapes the requirement of rare
codons for expression. This is also a first report of a small fusion tag
of human origin having affinity to heparin sepharose column
facilitating the purification of fusion protein.
Abstract: The objective of the study is to investigate the
effect of a footballer-s postural on selected physical fitness

Abstract: Here we report on the utilization of Laser-Induced
Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for determination of Quantum Dots
(QDs) in liquid solution. The process of optimization of experimental
conditions from choosing the carrier medium to application of colloid
QDs is described. The main goal was to get the best possible signal to
noise ratio.
The results obtained from the measurements confirmed the capability
of LIBS technique for qualitative and afterwards quantitative
determination of QDs in liquid solution.
