Abstract: In this paper a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) slot antenna with band notch characteristics for world interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) is proposed. The designed antenna consists of a rectangular radiating patch and a ground plane with tapered shape slot. To realize a notch band, a curved parasitic element has been etched out along with the radiating patch. It is observed that by adjusting the length, thickness and position of the parasitic element, the proposed antenna can achieved an impedance bandwidth of 8.01GHz (2.84 to 10.85GHz) with a notched band of 3.28-3.85GHz. Compared to the recently reported band notch antennas, the proposed antenna has a simple configuration to realize band notch characteristics in order to mitigate the potential interference between WiMAX and UWB system. Furthermore, a stable radiation pattern and moderate gain except at the notched band makes the proposed antenna suitable for various UWB applications.
Abstract: In recent years fuel cell vehicles are rapidly appearing
all over the globe. In less than 10 years, fuel cell vehicles have gone
from mere research novelties to operating prototypes and demonstration
models. At the same time, government and industry in development
countries have teamed up to invest billions of dollars in partnerships
intended to commercialize fuel cell vehicles within the early
years of the 21st century.
The purpose of this study is evaluation of model and performance
of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle in different drive cycles. A fuel
cell system model developed in this work is a semi-experimental
model that allows users to use the theory and experimental relationships
in a fuel cell system. The model can be used as part of a complex
fuel cell vehicle model in advanced vehicle simulator (ADVISOR).
This work reveals that the fuel consumption and energy efficiency
vary in different drive cycles. Arising acceleration and speed in a
drive cycle leads to Fuel consumption increase. In addition, energy
losses in drive cycle relates to fuel cell system power request. Parasitic
power in different parts of fuel cell system will increase when
power request increases. Finally, most of energy losses in drive cycle
occur in fuel cell system because of producing a lot of energy by fuel
cell stack.
Abstract: The freezing point of milk is in important indicator of
the milk quality. The freezing point of milk is determined primarily
to prove milk adulteration with water and to determine the amount of
water in it. Chemical composition and properties of milk, thermal
treatment and presence of any substance can influence freezing point
of product. There are different substances, which can be added to
milk with main purpose to prolong shelf-life of raw milk. There are
detergent, preservatives, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide,
antibiotics, sodium carbonate, and hydrogen peroxide. Therefore the
aim of the present study was to determine freezing point of milk,
skimmed milk, pasteurized milk and milk with different substances
(formaldehyde, antibiotics, sodium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide,
disinfectant, and detergent) in different concentrations. The thermal
treatment and different undesirable substances presence in milk have
significant influence on freezing point of it.
Abstract: Grasslands of Iran are encountered with a vast
desertification and destruction. Some legumes are plants of forage
importance with high palatability. Studied legumes in this project are
Onobrychis, Medicago sativa (alfalfa) and Trifolium repens. Seeds
were cultivated in research field of Kaboutarabad (33 km East of
Isfahan, Iran) with an average 80 mm. annual rainfall. Plants were
cultivated in a split plot design with 3 replicate and two water
treatments (weekly irrigation, and under stress with same amount per
15 days interval). Water entrance to each plots were measured by
Partial flow. This project lasted 20 weeks. Destructive samplings
(1m2 each time) were done weekly. At each sampling plants were
gathered and weighed separately for each vegetative parts. An Area
Meter (Vista) was used to measure root surface and leaf area. Total
shoot and root fresh and dry weight, leaf area index and soil coverage
were evaluated too. Dry weight was achieved in 750c oven after 24
hours. Statgraphic and Harvard Graphic software were used to
formulate and demonstrate the parameters curves due to time. Our
results show that Trifolium repens has affected 60 % and Medicago
sativa 18% by water stress. Onobrychis total fresh weight was
reduced 45%. Dry weight or Biomass in alfalfa is not so affected by
water shortage. This means that in alfalfa fields we can decrease the
irrigation amount and have some how same amount of Biomass.
Onobrychis show a drastic decrease in Biomass. The increases in
total dry matter due to time in studied plants are formulated. For
Trifolium repens if removal or cattle entrance to meadows do not
occurred at perfect time, it will decrease the palatability and water
content of the shoots. Water stress in a short period could develop the
root system in Trifolium repens, but if it last more than this other
ecological and soil factors will affect the growth of this plant. Low
level of soil water is not so important for studied legume forges. But
water shortage affect palatability and water content of aerial parts.
Leaf area due to time in studied legumes is formulated. In fact leaf
area is decreased by shortage in available water. Higher leaf area
means higher forage and biomass production. Medicago and
Onobrychis reach to the maximum leaf area sooner than Trifolium
and are able to produce an optimum soil cover and inhibit the
transpiration of soil water of meadows. Correlation of root surface to
Total biomass in studied plants is formulated. Medicago under water
stress show a 40% decrease in crown cover while at optimum
condition this amount reach to 100%. In order to produce forage in
areas without soil erosion Medicago is the best choice even with a
shortage in water resources. It is tried to represent the growth
simulation of three famous Forage Legumes. By growth simulation
farmers and range managers could better decide to choose best plant
adapted to water availability without designing different time and
labor consuming field experiments.

low literate societies around the world. It states the relevance of the
issues or problems in Nigeria, which might be neutral or absent in
other countries. The need to understand the issues and how such an
understanding can contribute to the achievement of the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) is also being discussed. The paper
concludes by suggesting the responsibilities of science teachers to
remove the misconceptions surrounding the socioscientific issues.
Abstract: Fault detection determines faultexistence and detecting
time. This paper discusses two layered fault detection methods to
enhance the reliability and safety. Two layered fault detection methods
consist of fault detection methods of component level controllers and
system level controllers. Component level controllers detect faults by
using limit checking, model-based detection, and data-driven
detection and system level controllers execute detection by stability
analysis which can detect unknown changes. System level controllers
compare detection results via stability with fault signals from lower
level controllers. This paper addresses fault detection methods via
stability and suggests fault detection criteria in nonlinear systems. The
fault detection method applies tothe hybrid control unit of a military
hybrid electric vehicleso that the hybrid control unit can detect faults
of the traction motor.
Abstract: The paper deals with the development of portable aerosol concentrator and its application for the determination of nitrites and nitrates. The device enables the continuous trapping of pollutants in the air. An extensive literature search has been elaborated which aims at the development of samplers and the possibilities of their application in the continuous determination of volatile organic compounds. The practical part of the paper is focused on the development of the portable aerosol concentrator. The device using the Aerosol Enrichment Unit has been experimentally verified and subsequently realized. It operates on the principle of equilibrium accumulation of pollutants from the gaseous phase using absorption liquid polydisperse aerosol. The device has been applied for monitoring nitrites and nitrates in the air. The chemiluminescence detector was used for detection; the achieved detection limit for nitrites was 28 ng/m3 and for nitrates 78 ng/m3.
Abstract: In this paper we introduce an effective ECG compression algorithm based on two dimensional multiwavelet transform. Multiwavelets offer simultaneous orthogonality, symmetry and short support, which is not possible with scalar two-channel wavelet systems. These features are known to be important in signal processing. Thus multiwavelet offers the possibility of superior performance for image processing applications. The SPIHT algorithm has achieved notable success in still image coding. We suggested applying SPIHT algorithm to 2-D multiwavelet transform of2-D arranged ECG signals. Experiments on selected records of ECG from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database revealed that the proposed algorithm is significantly more efficient in comparison with previously proposed ECG compression schemes.
Abstract: Microscopic emission and fuel consumption models
have been widely recognized as an effective method to quantify real
traffic emission and energy consumption when they are applied with
microscopic traffic simulation models. This paper presents a
framework for developing the Microscopic Emission (HC, CO, NOx,
and CO2) and Fuel consumption (MEF) models for light-duty
vehicles. The variable of composite acceleration is introduced into
the MEF model with the purpose of capturing the effects of historical
accelerations interacting with current speed on emission and fuel
consumption. The MEF model is calibrated by multivariate
least-squares method for two types of light-duty vehicle using
on-board data collected in Beijing, China by a Portable Emission
Measurement System (PEMS). The instantaneous validation results
shows the MEF model performs better with lower Mean Absolute
Percentage Error (MAPE) compared to other two models. Moreover,
the aggregate validation results tells the MEF model produces
reasonable estimations compared to actual measurements with
prediction errors within 12%, 10%, 19%, and 9% for HC, CO, NOx
emissions and fuel consumption, respectively.
Abstract: The current-voltage characteristics of a PtSi/p-Si
Schottky barrier diode was measured at the temperature of 85 K and
from the forward bias region of the I-V curve, the electrical
parameters of the diode were measured by three methods. The results
obtained from the two methods which considered the series resistance
were in close agreement with each other and from them barrier height
(), ideality factor (n) and series resistance () were found to be
0.2045 eV, 2.877 and 14.556 K respectively. By measuring the I-V
characteristics in the temperature range of 85-136 K the electrical
parameters were observed to have strong dependency on temperature.
The increase of barrier height and decrease of ideality factor with
increasing temperature is attributed to the existence of barrier height
inhomogeneities in the silicide-semiconductor structure.

data mining processto cope their complexity; missing values, high
dimensionality, and the prediction problem by using the methods of
missing value replacement, feature selection, and classification. The
experimental results will extend to develop the prediction model for
cardiology.
Abstract: In this work, the influence of temperature on the
different parameters of solar cells based on organic semiconductors
are studied. The short circuit current Isc increases so monotonous
with temperature and then saturates to a maximum value before
decreasing at high temperatures. The open circuit voltage Vco
decreases linearly with temperature. The fill factor FF and efficiency,
which are directly related with Isc and Vco follow the variations of
the letters. The phenomena are explained by the behaviour of the
mobility which is a temperature activated process.
Abstract: Superelastic Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) is accepted
when it used as connection in steel structures. The seismic behaviour
of steel frames with SMA is being assessed in this study. Three eightstorey
steel frames with different SMA systems are suggested, the
first one of which is braced with diagonal bracing system, the second
one is braced with nee bracing system while the last one is which the
SMA is used as connection at the plastic hinge regions of beams.
Nonlinear time history analyses of steel frames with SMA subjected
to two different ground motion records have been performed using
Seismostruct software. To evaluate the efficiency of suggested
systems, the dynamic responses of the frames were compared. From
the comparison results, it can be concluded that using SMA element
is an effective way to improve the dynamic response of structures
subjected to earthquake excitations. Implementing the SMA braces
can lead to a reduction in residual roof displacement. The shape
memory alloy is effective in reducing the maximum displacement at
the frame top and it provides a large elastic deformation range. SMA
connections are very effective in dissipating energy and reducing the
total input energy of the whole frame under severe seismic ground
motion. Using of the SMA connection system is more effective in
controlling the reaction forces at the base frame than other bracing
systems. Using SMA as bracing is more effective in reducing the
displacements. The efficiency of SMA is dependant on the input
wave motions and the construction system as well.

Abstract: Knowledge sharing culture contributes to a positive
working environment. Currently, there is no platform for the Faculty
of Industrial Information Technology (FIIT), Unisel academic staff to
share knowledge among them. As it is done manually, the sharing
process is through common meeting or by any offline discussions.
There is no repository for future retrieval. However, with open
source solution the development of knowledge based application may
reduce the cost tremendously. In this paper we discuss about the
domain on which this knowledge portal is being developed and also
the deployment of open source tools such as JOOMLA, PHP
programming language and MySQL. This knowledge portal is
evidence that open source tools also reliable in developing
knowledge based portal. These recommendations will be useful to
the open source community to produce more open source products in
future.
Abstract: In the present study the efficiency of Big Bang-Big
Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm is investigated in discrete structural
design optimization. It is shown that a standard version of the BB-BC
algorithm is sometimes unable to produce reasonable solutions to
problems from discrete structural design optimization. Two
reformulations of the algorithm, which are referred to as modified
BB-BC (MBB-BC) and exponential BB-BC (EBB-BC), are
introduced to enhance the capability of the standard algorithm in
locating good solutions for steel truss and frame type structures,
respectively. The performances of the proposed algorithms are
experimented and compared to its standard version as well as some
other algorithms over several practical design examples. In these
examples, steel structures are sized for minimum weight subject to
stress, stability and displacement limitations according to the
provisions of AISC-ASD.
Abstract: Calcium oxide (CaO) as carbon dioxide (CO2)
adsorbent at the elevated temperature has been very well-received
thus far. The CaO can be synthesized from natural calcium carbonate
(CaCO3) sources through the reversible calcination-carbonation
process. In the study, cockle shell has been selected as CaO
precursors. The objectives of the study are to investigate the
performance of calcination and carbonation with respect to different
temperature, heating rate, particle size and the duration time. Overall,
better performance is shown at the calcination temperature of 850oC
for 40 minutes, heating rate of 20oC/min, particle size of < 0.125mm
and the carbonation temperature is at 650oC. The synthesized
materials have been characterized by nitrogen physisorption and
surface morphology analysis. The effectiveness of the synthesized
cockle shell in capturing CO2 (0.72 kg CO2/kg adsorbent) which is
comparable to the commercialized adsorbent (0.60 kg CO2/kg
adsorbent) makes them as the most promising materials for CO2
capture.
Abstract: The purpose of suspension system in automobiles is to
improve the ride comfort and road handling. In this research the ride
and handling performance of a specific automobile with passive
suspension system is compared to a proposed fuzzy logic semi active
suspension system designed for that automobile. The bodysuspension-
wheel system is modeled as a two degree of freedom
quarter car model. MATLAB/SIMULINK [1] was used for
simulation and controller design. The fuzzy logic controller is based
on two inputs namely suspension velocity and body velocity. The
output of the fuzzy controller is the damping coefficient of the
variable damper. The result shows improvement over passive
suspension method.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a non-blind technique of
adding the watermark to the Fourier spectral components of audio
signal in a way such that the modified amplitude does not exceed the
maximum amplitude spread (MAS). This MAS is due to individual
Discrete fourier transform (DFT) coefficients in that particular frame,
which is derived from the Energy Spreading function given by
Schroeder. Using this technique one can store double the information
within a given frame length i.e. overriding the watermark on the
host of equal length with least perceptual distortion. The watermark
is uniformly floating on the DFT components of original signal.
This helps in detecting any intentional manipulations done on the
watermarked audio. Also, the scheme is found robust to various signal
processing attacks like presence of multiple watermarks, Additive
white gaussian noise (AWGN) and mp3 compression.
