Abstract: We consider here the subsonic impinging jet
representing the flow field of a vertical take-off aircraft or the initial
stage of rocket launching. Implicit Large-Eddy Simulation (ILES) is
used to calculate the time-dependent flow field and the radiate sound
pressure associated with jet impinging. With proper boundary
treatments and high-order numerical scheme, the near field sound
pressure is successfully obtained. Results are presented for both a
rectangular as well a circular jet.
Abstract: Threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted on a full scale CANDU Moderator and Transient variations of the temperature and velocity distributions inside the tank are determined. The results show that the flow and temperature distributions inside the moderator tank are three dimensional and no symmetry plane can be identified.Competition between the upward moving buoyancy driven flows and the downward moving momentum driven flows, results in the formation of circulation zones. The moderator tank operates in the buoyancy driven mode and any small disturbances in the flow or temperature makes the system unstable and asymmetric. Different types of temperature fluctuations are noted inside the tank: (i) large amplitude are at the boundaries between the hot and cold (ii) low amplitude are in the core of the tank (iii) high frequency fluctuations are in the regions with high velocities and (iv) low frequency fluctuations are in the regions with lower velocities.
Abstract: A semi-analytic boundary discretization method, the Method of Auxiliary Sources (MAS) is used to analyze Optical Antennas consisting of metallic parts. In addition to standard dipoletype antennas, consisting of two pieces of metal, a new structure consisting of a single metal piece with a tiny groove in the center is analyzed. It is demonstrated that difficult numerical problems are caused because optical antennas exhibit strong material dispersion, loss, and plasmon-polariton effects that require a very accurate numerical simulation. This structure takes advantage of the Channel Plasmon-Polariton (CPP) effect and exhibits a strong enhancement of the electric field in the groove. Also primitive 3D antenna model with spherical nano particles is analyzed.
Abstract: We obtain appropriate sharp estimates for rough oscillatory integrals. Our results represent significant improvements as well as natural extensions of what was known previously.
Abstract: We propose an integral tracking control method for a piezoelectric actuator system. The proposed method achieves the output tracking without requiring any hysteresis observer or schemes to compensate the hysteresis effect. With the proposed control law, the system is converted into the standard singularly perturbed model. Using Tikhonov-s theorem, we guarantee that the tracking error can be reduced to arbitrarily small bound. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
Abstract: Representation and description of object shapes by the
slopes of their contours or borders are proposed. The idea is to capture
the essence of the features that make it easier for a shape to be
stored, transmitted, compared and recognized. These features must
be independent of translation, rotation and scaling of the shape. A
approach is proposed to obtain high performance, efficiency and to
merge the boundaries into sequence of straight line segments with
the fewest possible segments. Evaluation on the performance of the
proposed method is based on its comparison with established method
of object shape description.
Abstract: Calcium [Ca2+] dynamics is studied as a potential form
of neuron excitability that can control many irregular processes like
metabolism, secretion etc. Ca2+ ion enters presynaptic terminal and
increases the synaptic strength and thus triggers the neurotransmitter
release. The modeling and analysis of calcium dynamics in neuron
cell becomes necessary for deeper understanding of the processes
involved. A mathematical model has been developed for cylindrical
shaped neuron cell by incorporating physiological parameters like
buffer, diffusion coefficient, and association rate. Appropriate initial
and boundary conditions have been framed. The closed form solution
has been developed in terms of modified Bessel function. A computer
program has been developed in MATLAB 7.11 for the whole
approach.
Abstract: We present a novel construction of 16-QAM codewords of length n = 2k . The number of constructed codewords is 162×[4k-1×k-k+1] . When these constructed codewords are utilized as a code in OFDM systems, their peak-to-mean envelope power ratios (PMEPR) are bounded above by 3.6 . The principle of our scheme is illustrated with a four subcarrier example.
Abstract: In this paper, an analytical approach is used to study the coupled lateral-torsional vibrations of laminated composite beam. It is known that in such structures due to the fibers orientation in various layers, any lateral displacement will produce a twisting moment. This phenomenon is modeled by the bending-twisting material coupling rigidity and its main feature is the coupling of lateral and torsional vibrations. In addition to the material coupling, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are taken into account in the definition of the potential and kinetic energies. Then, the governing differential equations are derived using the Hamilton-s principle and the mathematical model matches the Timoshenko beam model when neglecting the effect of bending-twisting rigidity. The equations of motion which form a system of three coupled PDEs are solved analytically to study the free vibrations of the beam in lateral and rotational modes due to the bending, as well as the torsional mode caused by twisting. The analytic solution is carried out in three steps: 1) assuming synchronous motion for the kinematic variables which are the lateral, rotational and torsional displacements, 2) solving the ensuing eigenvalue problem which contains three coupled second order ODEs and 3) imposing different boundary conditions related to combinations of simply, clamped and free end conditions. The resulting natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with similar results in the literature and good agreement is achieved.
Abstract: In this paper, we consider nested sliding mode control of SISO nonlinear systems, perturbed by bounded matched and unmatched uncertainties. The systems are assumed to be in strict-feedback form. A step wise procedure is introduced to obtain the controller. In each step, a continuous sliding mode controller is designed as virtual control law. Then the next step sliding surface is defined by using this virtual controller. These sliding surfaces are selected as nonlinear static functions of the system states. Finally in the last step, smooth static state feedback control law is determined such that the output reaches the desired set-point while the system is forced arbitrary close to the intersection of sliding surfaces and the states remain bounded.
Abstract: This paper presents a research agenda on the SCOR
model adaptation. SCOR model is designated to measure supply
chain performance and logistics impact across the boundaries of
individual organizations. It is at its growing stage of its life cycle and
is enjoying the leverage of becoming the industry standard. The
SCOR model has been developed and used widely in developed
countries context. This research focuses on the SCOR model
adaptation for the manufacturing industry in developing countries.
With a necessary understanding of the characteristics, difficulties and
problems of the manufacturing industry in developing countries-
supply chain; consequently, we will try to designs an adapted model
with its building blocks: business process model, performance
measures and best practices.
Abstract: The dynamic model of a drill in drilling process was
proposed and investigated in this study. To assure a good drilling quality, the vibration variation on the drill tips during high speed
drilling is needed to be investigated. A pre-twisted beam is used to
simulate the drill. The moving Winkler-Type elastic foundation is used to characterize the tip boundary variation in drilling. Due to the
variation of the drill depth, a time dependent dynamic model for the drill is proposed. Results simulated from this proposed model indicate that an abrupt natural frequencies drop are experienced as the drill tip
tough the workpiece, and a severe vibration is induced. The effects of parameters, e.g. drilling speed, depth, drill size and thrust force on the
drill tip responses studied.
Abstract: This study presents a novel means of designing a simple and effective torque controller for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). The overall stability of the system is shown using Lyapunov technique. The Lyapunov functions used contain a term penalizing the integral of the tracking error, enhancing the stability. The tracking error is shown to be globally uniformly bounded. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the approach.
Abstract: Nowadays, a passenger car suspension must has high
performance criteria with light weight, low cost, and low energy
consumption. Pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and
analyzed to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, and to get a
fast response of the damper, a reverse damping mechanism is adapted.
The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH
damper which offers good body control with reduced transferred input
force from the tire, compared with any other type of suspension
system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and
compression damping forces can be tuned independently, of which the
variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with
respect to the flow rate after blow-off becomes smooth when the fixed
orifice size increases, which means that the blow-off slope is
controllable using the fixed orifice size. Damping forces are measured
with the change of the solenoid current at the different piston
velocities to confirm the maximum hysteresis of 20 N, linearity, and
variance of damping force. The damping force variance is wide and
continuous, and is controlled by the spool opening, of which scheme is
usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous
variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in
the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its
performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through a real
car test.
Abstract: It is the living conditions in the cities that determine the future of our livelihood. “To change life, we must first change space"- Henri Lefebvre. Sustainable development is a utopian aspiration for South African cities (especially the case study of the Gauteng City Region), which are currently characterized by unplanned growth and increasing urban sprawl. While the reasons for poor environmental quality and living conditions are undoubtedly diverse and complex, having political, economical and social dimensions, it is argued that the prevailing approach to layout planning in South Africa is part of the problem. This article seeks a solution to the problem of sustainability, from a spatial planning perspective. The spatial planning tool, the urban development boundary, is introduced as the concept that will ensure empty talk being translated into a sustainable vision. The urban development boundary is a spatial planning tool that can be used and implemented to direct urban growth towards a more sustainable form. The urban development boundary aims to ensure planned urban areas, in contrast to the current unplanned areas characterized by urban sprawl and insufficient infrastructure. However, the success of the urban development boundary concept is subject to effective implementation measures, as well as adequate and efficient management. The concept of sustainable development can function as a driving force underlying societal change and transformation, but the interface between spatial planning and environmental management needs to be established (as this is the core aspects underlying sustainable development), and authorities needs to understand and implement this interface consecutively. This interface can, however, realize in terms of the objectives of the planning tool – the urban development boundary. The case study, the Gauteng City Region, is depicted as a site of economic growth and innovation, but there is a lack of good urban and regional governance, impacting on the design (layout) and function of urban areas and land use, as current authorities make uninformed decisions in terms of development applications, leading to unsustainable urban forms and unsustainable nodes. Place and space concepts are thus critical matters applicable to planning of the Gauteng City Region. The urban development boundary are thus explored as a planning tool to guide decision-making, and create a sustainable urban form, leading to better environmental and living conditions, and continuous sustainability.
Abstract: A simple microstructure optical fiber design based on an octagonal cladding structure is presented for simultaneously controlling dispersion and leakage properties. The finite difference method with anisotropic perfectly matched boundary layer is used to investigate the guiding properties. It is demonstrated that octagonal photonic crystal fibers with four rings can assume negative ultra-flattened dispersion of -19 + 0.23 ps/nm/km in the wavelength range of 1.275 μm to 1.68 μm, nearly zero ultra-flattened dispersion of 0 ± 0.40 ps/nm/km in a 1.38 to 1.64 μm, and low confinement losses less than 10-3 dB/km in the entire band of interest.
Abstract: A submerged horizontal plate type breakwater is
pointed out as an efficient wave protection device for cage culture in
marine fishery. In order to reveal the wave elimination principle of this
type breakwater, boundary element method is utilized to investigate
this problem. The flow field and the trajectory of water particles are
studied carefully. The flow field analysis shows that: the interaction of
incident wave and adverse current above the plate disturbs the water
domain drastically. This can slow down the horizontal velocity and
vertical velocity of the water particles.
Abstract: A study of the H-beam's nanosize structure phase
states after thermomechanical strengthening was carried out by TEM.
The following processes were analyzed. 1. The dispersing of the
cementite plates by cutting them by moving dislocations. 2. The
dissolution of cementite plates and repeated precipitation of the
cementite particles on the dislocations, the boundaries, subgrains and
grains. 3. The decay of solid solution of carbon in the α-iron after
"self-tempering" of martensite. 4. The final transformation of the
retained austenite in beinite with α-iron particles and cementite
formation. 5. The implementation of the diffusion mechanism of γ ⇒
α transformation.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with an investigation into the
localized non-stability of a thin elastic orthotropic semi-infinite plate.
In this study, a semi-infinite plate, simply supported on two edges
and different boundary conditions, clamped, hinged, sliding contact
and free on the other edge, are considered. The mathematical model
is used and a general solution is presented the conditions under which
localized solutions exist are investigated.
Abstract: This research paper designs a unique motion planner
of multiple platoons of nonholonomic car-like robots as a feasible
solution to the lane changing/merging maneuvers. The decentralized
planner with a leaderless approach and a path-guidance principle
derived from the Lyapunov-based control scheme generates collision
free avoidance and safe merging maneuvers from multiple lanes to a
single lane by deploying a split/merge strategy. The fixed obstacles
are the markings and boundaries of the road lanes, while the moving
obstacles are the robots themselves. Real and virtual road lane
markings and the boundaries of road lanes are incorporated into a
workspace to achieve the desired formation and configuration of the
robots. Convergence of the robots to goal configurations and the
repulsion of the robots from specified obstacles are achieved by
suitable attractive and repulsive potential field functions,
respectively. The results can be viewed as a significant contribution
to the avoidance algorithm of the intelligent vehicle systems (IVS).
Computer simulations highlight the effectiveness of the split/merge
strategy and the acceleration-based controllers.
