Abstract: There is inadequate information on the practice of
female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK, and there are often
myths and perceptions within communities that influence the
effectiveness of prevention programmes. This means it is difficult to
address the trends and changes in the practice in the UK.
To this end, FORWARD undertook novel and innovative research
using the Participatory Ethnographic and Evaluative Research
(PEER) method to explore the views of women from Eritrea, Sudan,
Somalia and Ethiopia that live in London and Bristol (two UK cities).
Women-s views, taken from PEER interviews, reflected reasons for
continued practice of FGM: marriageability, the harnessing and
control of female sexuality, and upholding traditions from their
countries of origin. It was also clear that the main supporters of the
practice were believed to be older women within families and
communities.
Women described the impact FGM was having on their lives as
isolating. And although it was clearly considered a private and
personal matter, they developed a real sense of connection with their
peers within the research process.
The women were overwhelmingly positive about combating the
practice, although they believed it would probably take a while
before it ends completely. They also made concrete
recommendations on how to improve support services for women
affected by FGM: Training for professionals (particularly in
healthcare), increased engagement with, and outreach to,
communities, culturally appropriate materials and information made
available and accessible to communities, and more consequent
implementation of legislation.
Finally, the women asked for more empathy and understanding,
particularly from health professionals. Rather than presenting FGM
as a completely alien and inconceivable practice, it may help for
those looking into these women-s lives and working with them to
understand the social and economic context in which the practice
takes place.
Abstract: Stable bacterial polymorphism on a single limiting resource may appear if between the evolved strains metabolic interactions take place that allow the exchange of essential nutrients [8]. Towards an attempt to predict the possible outcome of longrunning evolution experiments, a network based on the metabolic capabilities of homogeneous populations of every single gene knockout strain (nodes) of the bacterium E. coli is reconstructed. Potential metabolic interactions (edges) are allowed only between strains of different metabolic capabilities. Bacterial communities are determined by finding cliques in this network. Growth of the emerged hypothetical bacterial communities is simulated by extending the metabolic flux balance analysis model of Varma et al [2] to embody heterogeneous cell population growth in a mutual environment. Results from aerobic growth on 10 different carbon sources are presented. The upper bounds of the diversity that can emerge from single-cloned populations of E. coli such as the number of strains that appears to metabolically differ from most strains (highly connected nodes), the maximum clique size as well as the number of all the possible communities are determined. Certain single gene deletions are identified to consistently participate in our hypothetical bacterial communities under most environmental conditions implying a pattern of growth-condition- invariant strains with similar metabolic effects. Moreover, evaluation of all the hypothetical bacterial communities under growth on pyruvate reveals heterogeneous populations that can exhibit superior growth performance when compared to the performance of the homogeneous wild-type population.
Abstract: This paper describes the design concepts and
implementation of a 5-Joint mechanical arm for a rescue robot named
CEO Mission II. The multi-joint arm is a five degree of freedom
mechanical arm with a four bar linkage, which can be stretched to
125 cm. long. It is controlled by a teleoperator via the user-friendly
control and monitoring GUI program. With Inverse Kinematics
principle, we developed the method to control the servo angles of all
arm joints to get the desired tip position. By clicking the determined
tip position or dragging the tip of the mechanical arm on the
computer screen to the desired target point, the robot will compute
and move its multi-joint arm to the pose as seen on the GUI screen.
The angles of each joint are calculated and sent to all joint servos
simultaneously in order to move the mechanical arm to the desired
pose at once. The operator can also use a joystick to control the
movement of this mechanical arm and the locomotion of the robot.
Many sensors are installed at the tip of this mechanical arm for
surveillance from the high level and getting the vital signs of victims
easier and faster in the urban search and rescue tasks. It works very
effectively and easy to control. This mechanical arm and its software
were developed as a part of the CEO Mission II Rescue Robot that
won the First Runner Up award and the Best Technique award from
the Thailand Rescue Robot Championship 2006. It is a low cost,
simple, but functioning 5-Jiont mechanical arm which is built from
scratch, and controlled via wireless LAN 802.11b/g. This 5-Jiont
mechanical arm hardware concept and its software can also be used
as the basic mechatronics to many real applications.
Abstract: In this paper a novel, simple and reliable digital firing
scheme has been implemented for speed control of three-phase
induction motor using ac voltage controller. The system consists of
three-phase supply connected to the three-phase induction motor via
three triacs and its control circuit. The ac voltage controller has three
modes of operation depending on the shape of supply current. The
performance of the induction motor differs in each mode where the
speed is directly proportional with firing angle in two modes and
inversely in the third one. So, the control system has to detect the
current mode of operation to choose the correct firing angle of triacs.
Three sensors are used to feed the line currents to control system to
detect the mode of operation. The control strategy is implemented
using a low cost Xilinx Spartan-3E field programmable gate array
(FPGA) device. Three PI-controllers are designed on FPGA to
control the system in the three-modes. Simulation of the system is
carried out using PSIM computer program. The simulation results
show stable operation for different loading conditions especially in
mode 2/3. The simulation results have been compared with the
experimental results from laboratory prototype.
Abstract: In this paper, we develop quartic nonpolynomial
spline method for the numerical solution of third order two point
boundary value problems. It is shown that the new method gives
approximations, which are better than those produced by other spline
methods. Convergence analysis of the method is discussed through
standard procedures. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate
the applicability and efficiency of the novel method.
Abstract: As a vital activity for companies, new product
development (NPD) is also a very risky process due to the high
uncertainty degree encountered at every development stage and the
inevitable dependence on how previous steps are successfully
accomplished. Hence, there is an apparent need to evaluate new
product initiatives systematically and make accurate decisions under
uncertainty. Another major concern is the time pressure to launch a
significant number of new products to preserve and increase the
competitive power of the company. In this work, we propose an
integrated decision-making framework based on neural networks and
fuzzy logic to make appropriate decisions and accelerate the
evaluation process. We are especially interested in the two initial
stages where new product ideas are selected (go/no go decision) and
the implementation order of the corresponding projects are
determined. We show that this two-staged intelligent approach allows
practitioners to roughly and quickly separate good and bad product
ideas by making use of previous experiences, and then, analyze a
more shortened list rigorously.
Abstract: Designing and implementing intelligent systems has become a crucial factor for the innovation and development of better products of space technologies. A neural network is a parallel system, capable of resolving paradigms that linear computing cannot. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) is a digital device that owns reprogrammable properties and robust flexibility. For the neural network based instrument prototype in real time application, conventional specific VLSI neural chip design suffers the limitation in time and cost. With low precision artificial neural network design, FPGAs have higher speed and smaller size for real time application than the VLSI and DSP chips. So, many researchers have made great efforts on the realization of neural network (NN) using FPGA technique. In this paper, an introduction of ANN and FPGA technique are briefly shown. Also, Hardware Description Language (VHDL) code has been proposed to implement ANNs as well as to present simulation results with floating point arithmetic. Synthesis results for ANN controller are developed using Precision RTL. Proposed VHDL implementation creates a flexible, fast method and high degree of parallelism for implementing ANN. The implementation of multi-layer NN using lookup table LUT reduces the resource utilization for implementation and time for execution.
Abstract: This study reports results of a meta-analytic path analysis e-learning Acceptance Model with k = 27 studies, Databases searched included Information Sciences Institute (ISI) website. Variables recorded included perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward behavior, and behavioral intention to use e-learning. A correlation matrix of these variables was derived from meta-analytic data and then analyzed by using structural path analysis to test the fitness of the e-learning acceptance model to the observed aggregated data. Results showed the revised hypothesized model to be a reasonable, good fit to aggregated data. Furthermore, discussions and implications are given in this article.
Abstract: The electrical interaction between two axisymmetric
spheroidal particles in an electrolyte solution is examined numerically.
A Galerkin finite element method combined with a Newton-Raphson
iteration scheme is proposed to evaluate the spatial variation in the
electrical potential, and the result obtained used to estimate the
interaction energy between two particles. We show that if the surface
charge density is fixed, the potential gradient is larger at a point, which
has a larger curvature, and if surface potential is fixed, surface charge
density is proportional to the curvature. Also, if the total interaction
energy against closest surface-to-surface curve exhibits a primary
maximum, the maximum follows the order (oblate-oblate) >
(sphere-sphere)>(oblate-prolate)>(prolate-prolate), and if the curve
has a secondary minimum, the absolute value of the minimum follows
the same order.
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to find out the efficacy
of selected mobility exercises and participation in special games on psychomotor abilities, functional abilities and skill performance
among intellectually disabled children of age group under 14. Thirty male students who were studying in Balar Kalvi Nilayam and YMCA
College Special School, Chennai, acted as subjects for the study.
They were only mild and moderate in intellectual disability. These
students did not undergo any special training or coaching programme apart from their regular routine physical activity classes as a part of
the curriculum in the school. They were attached at random, based on
age in which 30 belonged to under 14 age group, which was divided
into three equal group of ten for each experimental treatment. 10
students (Treatment group I) underwent calisthenics and special
games participation, 10 students (Treatment group II) underwent
aquatics and special games participation, 10 students (Treatment
group III) underwent yoga and special games participation. The subjects were tested on selected criterion variables prior (pre test)
and after twelve weeks of training (post test). The pre and post test
data collected from three groups on functional abilities(self care,
learning, capacity for independent living), psychomotor
variables(static balance, eye hand coordination, simple reaction time
test) and skill performance (bocce skill, badminton skill, table tennis
skill) were statistically examined for significant difference, by
applying the analysis ANACOVA. Whenever an 'F' ratio for
adjusted test was found to be significant for adjusted post test means,
Scheffe-s test was followed as a post-hoc test to determine which of
the paired mean differences was significant. The result of the study
showed that among under 14 age groups there was a significant improvement on selected criterion variables such as, Balance,
Coordination, self-care and learning and also in Bocce, Badminton & Table Tennis skill performance, due to mobility exercises and
participation in special games. However there were no significant
differences among the groups.
Abstract: This paper addresses control of commutation of switched reluctance (SR) motor without the use of a physical position detector. Rotor position detection schemes for SR motor based on magnetisation characteristics of the motor use normal excitation or applied current /voltage pulses. The resulting schemes are referred to as passive or active methods respectively. The research effort is in realizing an economical sensorless SR rotor position detector that is accurate, reliable and robust to suit a particular application. An effective and reliable means of generating commutation signals of an SR motor based on inductance profile of its stator windings determined using active probing technique is presented. The scheme has been validated online using a 4-phase 8/6 SR motor and an 8-bit processor.
Abstract: The design of chaos-based secure communication
via synchronized modified Chua-s systems is investigated in
this paper. A continuous control law is proposed to ensure
synchronization of the master and slave modified Chua-s
systems by using the variable structure control technique.
Particularly, the concept of extended systems is introduced
such that a continuous control input is obtained to avoid
chattering phenomenon. Then, it becomes possible to ensure
that the message signal embedded in the transmitter can be
recovered in the receiver.
Abstract: Whit the increasing of traffic, noise emanated from
motor vehicles increases as well, which subsequently causes adding
to the stress of modern city. Thus, it is needed to look for most
critical areas in terms of environmental and social impact of noise.
There are several critical situations for noise emanated from motor
vehicles such as stop and go situation which usually occurs near
junctions or at-grade intersections. This study was conducted in two
locations, most common types of intersections, crossroads and Tjunctions.
The highest average noise levels are recorded during Go
phase for T-junction, 64.4 dB, and Drive phase for crossroad, 64 dB.
It implies that the existence of intersection caused the noise level to
increase. The vehicles starting to move produce more sound than
when they travel at a constant speed along the intersection. It is
suggested that special considerations and priority of allocating funds
should be given to these critical spots.
Abstract: Since its independence in 1962, Algeria has struggled
to establish an educational system tailored to the needs of the
population it may address. Considering the historical connection with
France, Algeria has always looked at the French language as a
cultural imperative until late in the seventies. After the Arabization
policy of 1971 and the socioeconomic changes taking place
worldwide, the use of English as a communicating vehicle started to
gain more space within globalized Algeria. Consequently, disparities
in the use of French started to fade away at the cross-roads leaving
more space to the teaching of English as a second foreign language.
Moreover, the introduction of the Bologna Process and the
European Credit Transfer System in Higher Education has
necessitated some innovations in the design and development of new
curricula adapted to the socioeconomic market. In this paper, I will
try to highlight the important historical dimensions Algeria has taken
towards the implementation of an English language methodology and
to the status it acquired from second foreign language, to first foreign
language to “the language of knowledge and sciences". I will also
propose new pedagogical perspectives for a better treatment of the
English language in order to encourage independent and autonomous
learning.
Abstract: The Kansei engineering is a technology which
converts human feelings into quantitative terms and helps designers
develop new products that meet customers- expectation. Standard
Kansei engineering procedure involves finding relationships between
human feelings and design elements of which many researchers have
found forward and backward relationship through various soft
computing techniques. In this paper, we proposed the framework of
Kansei engineering linking relationship not only between human
feelings and design elements, but also the whole part of product, by
constructing association rules. In this experiment, we obtain input
from emotion score that subjects rate when they see the whole part of
the product by applying semantic differentials. Then, association
rules are constructed to discover the combination of design element
which affects the human feeling. The results of our experiment
suggest the pattern of relationship of design elements according to
human feelings which can be derived from the whole part of product.
Abstract: Diagnostic goal of transformers in service is to detect the winding or the core in fault. Transformers are valuable equipment which makes a major contribution to the supply security of a power system. Consequently, it is of great importance to minimize the frequency and duration of unwanted outages of power transformers. So, Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) is found to be a useful tool for reliable detection of incipient mechanical fault in a transformer, by finding winding or core defects. The authors propose as first part of this article, the coupled circuits method, because, it gives most possible exhaustive modelling of transformers. And as second part of this work, the application of FRA in low frequency in order to improve and simplify the response reading. This study can be useful as a base data for the other transformers of the same categories intended for distribution grid.
Abstract: Phase transformation temperature is one of the most important parameters for the shape memory alloys (SMAs). The most popular method to determine these phase transformation temperatures is the Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), but due to the limitation of the DSC testing itself, it made it difficult for the finished product which is not in the powder form. A novel method which uses the Universal Testing Machine has been conducted to determine the phase transformation temperatures. The Flexinol wire was applied with force and maintained throughout the experiment and at the same time it was heated up slowly until a temperature of approximately 1000C with direct current. The direct current was then slowly decreased to cool down the temperature of the Flexinol wire. All the phase transformation temperatures for Flexinol wire were obtained. The austenite start at 52.540C and austenite finish at 60.900C, while martensite start at 44.780C and martensite finish at 32.840C.
Abstract: Elementary particles are created in pairs of equal and opposite momentums at a reference frame at the speed of light. The speed of light reference frame is viewed as a point in space as observed by observer at rest. This point in space is the bang location of the big bang theory. The bang in the big bang theory is not more than sustained flow of pairs of positive and negative elementary particles. Electrons and negative charged elementary particles are ejected from this point in space at velocities faster than light, while protons and positively charged particles obtain velocities lower than light. Subsonic masses are found to have real and positive charge, while supersonic masses are found to be negative and imaginary indicating that the two masses are of different entities. The electron-s super-sonic speed, as viewed by rest observer was calculated and found to be less than the speed of light and is little higher than the electron speed in Bohr-s orbit. The newly formed hydrogen gas temperature was found to be in agreement with temperatures found on newly formed stars. Universe expansion was found to be in agreement. Partial mass and charge elementary particles and particles with momentum only were explained in the context of this theoretical approach.
Abstract: This paper looks at transgender identities and the law in the context of marriage. It particularly focuses on the role of language and definition in classifying transgendered individuals into a legal category. Two lines of cases in transgender jurisprudence are examined. The former cases decided the definition of 'man' and 'woman' on the basis of biological criteria while the latter cases held that biological factors should not be the sole criterion for defining a man or a woman. Three categories were found to classify transgender people, namely male, female and "monstrous". Since transgender people challenge the core gender distinction that the law stresses, they are often regarded as problematic and monstrous which caused them to be subjected to severe legal consequences. This paper discusses these issues by analyzing and comparing different cases in transgender jurisprudence as well as examining how these issues play out in contemporary Hong Kong.
Abstract: The aim of this studywas toinvestigate the effect
ofrunning classification (sprint, middle, and long distance)and two
distances on blood lactate (BLa), heart rate (HR), and rating of
perceived exertion (RPE) Borg scale ratings in collegiate athletes. On
different days, runners (n = 15) ran 400m and 1600m at a five min
mile pace, followed by a two min 6mph jog, and a two min 3mph
walk as part of the cool down. BLa, HR, and RPE were taken at
baseline, post-run, plus 2 and 4 min recovery times. The middle and
long distance runners exhibited lower BLa concentrations than sprint
runners after two min of recovery post 400 m runs, immediately after,
and two and four min recovery periods post 1600 m runs. When
compared to sprint runners, distance runners may have exhibited the
ability to clear BLa more quickly, particularly after running 1600 m.
