Abstract: To study the impact of the inter-module ventilation (IMV) on the space station, the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model under the influence of IMV, the mathematical model, boundary conditions and calculation method are established and determined to analyze the influence of IMV on cabin air flow characteristics and velocity distribution firstly; and then an integrated overall thermal mathematical model of the space station is used to consider the impact of IMV on thermal management. The results show that: the IMV has a significant influence on the cabin air flow, the flowrate of IMV within a certain range can effectively improve the air velocity distribution in cabin, if too much may lead to its deterioration; IMV can affect the heat deployment of the different modules in space station, thus affecting its thermal management, the use of IMV can effectively maintain the temperature levels of the different modules and help the space station to dissipate the waste heat.
Abstract: Graduate attributes have received increasing attention
over recent years as universities incorporate these attributes into the
curriculum. Graduates who have adequate technical knowledge only
are not sufficiently equipped to compete effectively in the work
place; they also need non disciplinary skills ie, graduate attributes.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of an eportfolio
in a technical communication course to enhance engineering
students- graduate attributes: namely, learning of communication,
critical thinking and problem solving and teamwork skills. Two
questionnaires were used to elicit information from the students: one
on their preferred and the other on the actual learning process. In
addition, student perceptions of the use of eportfolio as a learning
tool were investigated. Preliminary findings showed that most of the
students- expectations have been met with their actual learning. This
indicated that eportfolio has the potential as a tool to enhance
students- graduate attributes.

problem in the process of spacecraft precise mating, automatic leveling
and equalizing hoist device for spacecraft is developed. Based on
lifting point adjustment by utilizing XY-workbench, the leveling and
equalizing controller by a self-adaptive control algorithm is proposed.
By simulation analysis and lifting test using engineering prototype,
validity and reliability of the hoist device is verified, which can meet
the precision mating requirements of practical applications for
spacecraft.
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to establish the experimental conditions for removal of Cibacron Brilliant Yellow 3G-P dye (CBY) from aqueous solutions by sorption onto coffee husks as a low-cost sorbent. The effects of various experimental parameters (e.g. initial CBY dye concentration, sorbent mass, pH, temperature) were examined and the optimal experimental conditions were determined. The results indicated that the removal of the dye was pH dependent and at initial pH of 2, the dye was removed effectively. The CBY dye sorption data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich equilibrium models. The maximum sorption capacity of CBY dye ions onto coffee husks increased from 24.04 to 35.04 mg g-1 when the temperature was increased from 293 to 313 K. The calculated sorption thermodynamic parameters including ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° indicated that the CBY dye sorption onto coffee husks is a spontaneous, endothermic and mainly physical in nature.
Abstract: The necessity of solving multi dimensional
complicated scientific problems beside the necessity of several
objective functions optimization are the most motive reason of born
of artificial intelligence and heuristic methods.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for multiobjective
optimization based on learning automata. In the proposed method,
search space divides into separate hyper-cubes and each cube is
considered as an action. After gathering of all objective functions
with separate weights, the cumulative function is considered as the
fitness function. By the application of all the cubes to the cumulative
function, we calculate the amount of amplification of each action and
the algorithm continues its way to find the best solutions. In this
Method, a lateral memory is used to gather the significant points of
each iteration of the algorithm. Finally, by considering the
domination factor, pareto front is estimated. Results of several
experiments show the effectiveness of this method in comparison
with genetic algorithm based method.
Abstract: This paper is a continuation of our interest in the influence of temperature on specific retention volumes and the resulting infinite dilution activity coefficients. This has a direct effect in the design of absorption and stripping columns for the abatement of volatile organic compounds. The interaction of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at varying temperatures was studied by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Infinite dilution activity coefficients and specific retention volumes obtained in this study were found to be in agreement with those obtained from static headspace and group contribution methods by the authors as well as literature values for similar systems. Temperature variation also allows for transport calculations for different seasons. The results of this work confirm that PDMS is well suited for the scrubbing of VOCs from waste gas streams. Plots of specific retention volumes against temperature gave linear van-t Hoff plots.
Abstract: A color image edge detection algorithm is proposed in
this paper using Pseudo-complement and matrix rotation operations.
First, pseudo-complement method is applied on the image for each
channel. Then, matrix operations are applied on the output image of
the first stage. Dominant pixels are obtained by image differencing
between the pseudo-complement image and the matrix operated
image. Median filtering is carried out to smoothen the image thereby
removing the isolated pixels. Finally, the dominant or core pixels
occurring in at least two channels are selected. On plotting the
selected edge pixels, the final edge map of the given color image is
obtained. The algorithm is also tested in HSV and YCbCr color
spaces. Experimental results on both synthetic and real world images
show that the accuracy of the proposed method is comparable to
other color edge detectors. All the proposed procedures can be
applied to any image domain and runs in polynomial time.
Abstract: Extracting and elaborating software requirements and
transforming them into viable software architecture are still an
intricate task. This paper defines a solution architecture which is
based on the blurred amalgamation of problem space and solution
space. The dependencies between domain constraints, requirements
and architecture and their importance are described that are to be
considered collectively while evolving from problem space to
solution space. This paper proposes a revised version of Twin Peaks
Model named Win Peaks Model that reconciles software
requirements and architecture in more consistent and adaptable
manner. Further the conflict between stakeholders- win-requirements
is resolved by proposed Voting methodology that is simple
adaptation of win-win requirements negotiation model and QARCC.
Abstract: In areas of low to moderate seismicity many building contents and equipment are not positively fixed to the floor or tied to adjacent walls. Under seismic induced horizontal vibration, such contents and equipment can suffer from damage by either overturning or impact associated with rocking. This paper focuses on the estimation of shock on typical contents and equipment due to rocking. A simplified analytical model is outlined that can be used to estimate the maximum acceleration on a rocking object given its basic geometric and mechanical properties. The developed model was validated against experimental results. The experimental results revealed that the maximum shock acceleration can be underestimated if the static stiffness of the materials at the interface between the rocking object and floor is used rather than the dynamic stiffness. Excellent agreement between the model and experimental results was found when the dynamic stiffness for the interface material was used, which was found to be generally much higher than corresponding static stiffness under different investigated boundary conditions of the cushion. The proposed model can be a beneficial tool in performing a rapid assessment of shock sensitive components considered for possible seismic rectification.
Abstract: Losses reduction initiatives in distribution systems
have been activated due to the increasing cost of supplying
electricity, the shortage in fuel with ever-increasing cost to produce
more power, and the global warming concerns. These initiatives have
been introduced to the utilities in shape of incentives and penalties.
Recently, the electricity distribution companies in Oman have been
incentivized to reduce the distribution technical and non-technical
losses with an equal annual reduction rate for 6 years. In this paper,
different techniques for losses reduction in Mazoon Electricity
Company (MZEC) are addressed. In this company, high numbers of
substation and feeders were found to be non-compliant with the
Distribution System Security Standard (DSSS). Therefore, 33
projects have been suggested to bring non-complying 29 substations
and 28 feeders to meet the planed criteria and to comply with the
DSSS. The largest part of MZEC-s network (South Batinah region)
was modeled by ETAP software package. The model has been
extended to implement the proposed projects and to examine their
effects on losses reduction. Simulation results have shown that the
implementation of these projects leads to a significant improvement
in voltage profile, and reduction in the active and the reactive power
losses. Finally, the economical analysis has revealed that the
implementation of the proposed projects in MZEC leads to an annual
saving of about US$ 5 million.
Abstract: A gold coated copper rotating electrode was used to
eliminate surface oxidation effect. This study examined the effect of
electrode rotation on the ozone generation process and showed that an
ozonizer with an electrode rotating system might be a possible way to
increase ozone-synthesis efficiency. Two new phenomena appeared
during experiments with the rotating electrode. First was that ozone
concentration increased to about two times higher than that of the case
with no rotation. Second, input power and discharge area were found
to increase with the rotation speed. Both ozone concentration and
ozone production efficiency improved in the case of rotating electrode
compared to the case with a non-rotating electrode. One possible
reason for this was the increase in discharge length of
micro-discharges during electrode rotation. The rotating electrode
decreased onset voltage, while reactor capacitance increased with
rotation. Use of a rotating-type electrode allowed earlier observation
of the ozone zero phenomena compared with a non-rotating electrode
because, during rotation, the entire electrode surface was functional,
allowing nitrogen on the electrode surface to be evenly consumed.
Nitrogen demand increased with increasing rotation s
Abstract: Simultaneous recovery of copper and DCA from
simulated MEUF concentrated stream was investigated. Effects of
surfactant (DCA) and metal (copper) concentrations, surfactant to
metal molar ratio (S/M ratio), electroplating voltage, EDTA
concentration, solution pH, and salt concentration on metal recovery
and current efficiency were studied. Electric voltage of -0.5 V was
shown to be optimum operation condition in terms of Cu recovery,
current efficiency, and surfactant recovery. Increasing Cu recovery and
current efficiency were observed with increases of Cu concentration
while keeping concentration of DCA constant. However, increasing
both Cu and DCA concentration while keeping S/M ratio constant at
2.5 showed detrimental effect on Cu recovery at DCA concentration
higher than 15 mM. Cu recovery decreases with increasing pH while
current efficiency showed an opposite trend. It is believed that
conductivity is the main cause for discrepancy of Cu recovery and
current efficiency observed at different pH. Finally, it was shown that
EDTA had adverse effect on both Cu recovery and current efficiency
while addition of NaCl salt had negative impact on current efficiency
at concentration higher than 8000 mg/L.
Abstract: Global Software Development (GSD) projects are
passing through different boundaries of a company, country and even
in other continents where time zone differs between both sites.
Beside many benefits of such development, research declared plenty
of negative impacts on these GSD projects. It is important to
understand problems which may lie during the execution of GSD
project with different time zones. This research project discussed and
provided different issues related to time delays in GSD projects. In
this paper, authors investigated some of the time delay factors which
usually lie in GSD projects with different time zones. This
investigation is done through systematic review of literature.
Furthermore, the practices to overcome these delay factors which
have already been reported in literature and GSD organizations are
also explored through literature survey and case studies.
Abstract: We have defined two suites of metrics, which cover
static and dynamic aspects of component assembly. The static
metrics measure complexity and criticality of component assembly,
wherein complexity is measured using Component Packing Density
and Component Interaction Density metrics. Further, four criticality
conditions namely, Link, Bridge, Inheritance and Size criticalities
have been identified and quantified. The complexity and criticality
metrics are combined to form a Triangular Metric, which can be used
to classify the type and nature of applications. Dynamic metrics are
collected during the runtime of a complete application. Dynamic
metrics are useful to identify super-component and to evaluate the
degree of utilisation of various components. In this paper both static
and dynamic metrics are evaluated using Weyuker-s set of properties.
The result shows that the metrics provide a valid means to measure
issues in component assembly. We relate our metrics suite with
McCall-s Quality Model and illustrate their impact on product
quality and to the management of component-based product
development.
Abstract: Faced with social and health system capacity
constraints and rising and changing demand for welfare services,
governments and welfare providers are increasingly relying on
innovation to help support and enhance services. However, the
evidence reported by several studies indicates that the realization of
that potential is not an easy task. Innovations can be deemed
inherently complex to implement and operate, because many of them
involve a combination of technological and organizational renewal
within an environment featuring a diversity of stakeholders. Many
public welfare service innovations are markedly systemic in their
nature, which means that they emerge from, and must address, the
complex interplay between political, administrative, technological,
institutional and legal issues. This paper suggests that stakeholders
dealing with systemic innovation in welfare services must deal with
ambiguous and incomplete information in circumstances of
uncertainty. Employing a literature review methodology and case
study, this paper identifies, categorizes and discusses different
aspects of the uncertainty of systemic innovation in public welfare
services, and argues that uncertainty can be classified into eight
categories: technological uncertainty, market uncertainty,
regulatory/institutional uncertainty, social/political uncertainty,
acceptance/legitimacy uncertainty, managerial uncertainty, timing
uncertainty and consequence uncertainty.
Abstract: Hydrogen is an important chemical in many industries
and it is expected to become one of the major fuels for energy
generation in the future. Unfortunately, hydrogen does not exist in its
elemental form in nature and therefore has to be produced from
hydrocarbons, hydrogen-containing compounds or water.
Above its critical point (374.8oC and 22.1MPa), water has lower
density and viscosity, and a higher heat capacity than those of
ambient water. Mass transfer in supercritical water (SCW) is
enhanced due to its increased diffusivity and transport ability. The
reduced dielectric constant makes supercritical water a better solvent
for organic compounds and gases. Hence, due to the aforementioned
desirable properties, there is a growing interest toward studies
regarding the gasification of organic matter containing biomass or
model biomass solutions in supercritical water.
In this study, hydrogen and biofuel production by the catalytic
gasification of 2-Propanol in supercritical conditions of water was
investigated. Pt/Al2O3and Ni/Al2O3were the catalysts used in the
gasification reactions. All of the experiments were performed under a
constant pressure of 25MPa. The effects of five reaction temperatures
(400, 450, 500, 550 and 600°C) and five reaction times (10, 15, 20,
25 and 30 s) on the gasification yield and flammable component
content were investigated.
Abstract: The emergence of blended learning has been
influenced by the rapid changes in Higher Education within the last
few years. However, there is a lack of studies that look into the future
of blended learning in the Saudi context. The most likely explanation
is that blended learning is relatively new and, with respect to learning
in general, under-researched. This study addresses this gap and
explores the views of lecturers and students towards the future of
blended learning in Saudi Arabia. This study was informed by the
interpretive paradigm that appears to be most appropriate to
understand and interpret the perceptions of students and instructors
towards a new learning environment. While globally there has been
considerable research on the perceptions of e-learning and blended
learning with its different models, there is plenty of space for further
research specifically in the Arab region, and in Saudi Arabia where
blended learning is now being introduced.
Abstract: As the Internet continues to grow at a rapid pace as
the primary medium for communications and commerce and as
telecommunication networks and systems continue to expand their
global reach, digital information has become the most popular and
important information resource and our dependence upon the
underlying cyber infrastructure has been increasing significantly.
Unfortunately, as our dependency has grown, so has the threat to the
cyber infrastructure from spammers, attackers and criminal
enterprises. In this paper, we propose a new machine learning based
network intrusion detection framework for cyber security. The
detection process of the framework consists of two stages: model
construction and intrusion detection. In the model construction stage,
a semi-supervised machine learning algorithm is applied to a
collected set of network audit data to generate a profile of normal
network behavior and in the intrusion detection stage, input network
events are analyzed and compared with the patterns gathered in the
profile, and some of them are then flagged as anomalies should these
events are sufficiently far from the expected normal behavior. The
proposed framework is particularly applicable to the situations where
there is only a small amount of labeled network training data
available, which is very typical in real world network environments.
Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) Routing aims to find path between source and destination satisfying the QoS requirements which efficiently using the network resources and underlying routing algorithm and to fmd low-cost paths that satisfy given QoS constraints. One of the key issues in providing end-to-end QoS guarantees in packet networks is determining feasible path that satisfies a number of QoS constraints. We present a Optimized Multi- Constrained Routing (OMCR) algorithm for the computation of constrained paths for QoS routing in computer networks. OMCR applies distance vector to construct a shortest path for each destination with reference to a given optimization metric, from which a set of feasible paths are derived at each node. OMCR is able to fmd feasible paths as well as optimize the utilization of network resources. OMCR operates with the hop-by-hop, connectionless routing model in IP Internet and does not create any loops while fmding the feasible paths. Nodes running OMCR not necessarily maintaining global view of network state such as topology, resource information and routing updates are sent only to neighboring nodes whereas its counterpart link-state routing method depend on complete network state for constrained path computation and that incurs excessive communication overhead.
Abstract: Circle grid space filling plate is a flow conditioner with a fractal pattern and used to eliminate turbulence originating from pipe fittings in experimental fluid flow applications. In this paper, steady state, incompressible, swirling turbulent flow through circle grid space filling plate has been studied. The solution and the analysis were carried out using finite volume CFD solver FLUENT 6.2. Three turbulence models were used in the numerical investigation and their results were compared with the pressure drop correlation of BS EN ISO 5167-2:2003. The turbulence models investigated here are the standard k-ε, realizable k-ε, and the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM). The results showed that the RSM model gave the best agreement with the ISO pressure drop correlation. The effects of circle grids space filling plate thickness and Reynolds number on the flow characteristics have been investigated as well.
