Abstract: An inverse problem of doubly center matrices is discussed. By translating the constrained problem into unconstrained problem, two iterative methods are proposed. A numerical example illustrate our algorithms.
Abstract: In this paper, an efficient technique is proposed to manage the cache memory. The proposed technique introduces some modifications on the well-known set associative mapping technique. This modification requires a little alteration in the structure of the cache memory and on the way by which it can be referenced. The proposed alteration leads to increase the set size virtually and consequently to improve the performance and the utilization of the cache memory. The current mapping techniques have accomplished good results. In fact, there are still different cases in which cache memory lines are left empty and not used, whereas two or more processes overwrite the lines of each other, instead of using those empty lines. The proposed algorithm aims at finding an efficient way to deal with such problem.
Abstract: Mathematical and computational modeling of calcium
signalling in nerve cells has produced considerable insights into how
the cells contracts with other cells under the variation of biophysical
and physiological parameters. The modeling of calcium signaling in
astrocytes has become more sophisticated. The modeling effort has
provided insight to understand the cell contraction. Main objective
of this work is to study the effect of voltage gated (Operated)
calcium channel (VOC) on calcium profile in the form of advection
diffusion equation. A mathematical model is developed in the form
of advection diffusion equation for the calcium profile. The model
incorporates the important physiological parameter like diffusion
coefficient etc. Appropriate boundary conditions have been framed.
Finite volume method is employed to solve the problem. A program
has been developed using in MATLAB 7.5 for the entire problem
and simulated on an AMD-Turion 32-bite machine to compute the
numerical results.
Abstract: Bladder carcinoma is an important worldwide health problem. Both cystoscopy and urine cytology used in detecting bladder cancer suffer from drawbacks where cystoscopy is an invasive method and urine cytology shows low sensitivity in low grade tumors. This study validates easier and less time-consuming techniques to evaluate the value of combined use of angiogenin and clusterin in comparison and combination with voided urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer patients. This study includes malignant (bladder cancer patients, n= 50), benign (n=20) and healthy (n=20) groups. The studied groups were subjected to cystoscopic examination, detection of bilharzial antibodies, urine cytology, and estimation of urinary angiogenin and clusterin by ELISA. The overall sensitivity and specificity were 66% and 75% for angiogenin, 70% and 82.5% for clusterin and 46% and 80% for voided urine cytology. Combined sensitivity of angiogenin and clusterin with urine cytology increased from 82 to 88%.
Abstract: The paper deals with a mathematical model for fluid dynamic flows on road networks which is based on conservation laws. This nonlinear framework is based on the conservation of cars. We focus on traffic circle, which is a finite number of roads that meet at some junctions. The traffic circle with junctions having either one incoming and two outgoing or two incoming and one outgoing roads. We describe the numerical schemes with the particular boundary conditions used to produce approximated solutions of the problem.
Abstract: In large datasets, identifying exceptional or rare cases
with respect to a group of similar cases is considered very significant
problem. The traditional problem (Outlier Mining) is to find
exception or rare cases in a dataset irrespective of the class label of
these cases, they are considered rare events with respect to the whole
dataset. In this research, we pose the problem that is Class Outliers
Mining and a method to find out those outliers. The general
definition of this problem is “given a set of observations with class
labels, find those that arouse suspicions, taking into account the
class labels". We introduce a novel definition of Outlier that is Class
Outlier, and propose the Class Outlier Factor (COF) which measures
the degree of being a Class Outlier for a data object. Our work
includes a proposal of a new algorithm towards mining of the Class
Outliers, presenting experimental results applied on various domains
of real world datasets and finally a comparison study with other
related methods is performed.
Abstract: In this study, an analysis has been performed for
free convection with radiation effect over a thermal forming
nonlinearly stretching sheet. Parameters n, k0, Pr, G represent
the dominance of the nonlinearly effect, radiation effect, heat
transfer and free convection effects which have been presented
in governing equations, respectively. The similarity
transformation and the finite-difference methods have been
used to analyze the present problem. From the results, we find
that the effects of parameters n, k0, Pr, Ec and G to the
nonlinearly stretching sheet. The increase of Prandtl number Pr,
free convection parameter G or radiation parameter k0 resulting
in the increase of heat transfer effects, but increase of the
viscous dissipation number Ec will decrease of heat transfer
effect.
Abstract: Selecting the routes and the assignment of link flow in a computer communication networks are extremely complex combinatorial optimization problems. Metaheuristics, such as genetic or simulated annealing algorithms, are widely applicable heuristic optimization strategies that have shown encouraging results for a large number of difficult combinatorial optimization problems. This paper considers the route selection and hence the flow assignment problem. A genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm are used to solve this problem. A new hybrid algorithm combining the genetic with the simulated annealing algorithm is introduced. A modification of the genetic algorithm is also introduced. Computational experiments with sample networks are reported. The results show that the proposed modified genetic algorithm is efficient in finding good solutions of the flow assignment problem compared with other techniques.
Abstract: Structural representation and technology mapping of
a Boolean function is an important problem in the design of nonregenerative
digital logic circuits (also called combinational logic
circuits). Library aware function manipulation offers a solution to
this problem. Compact multi-level representation of binary networks,
based on simple circuit structures, such as AND-Inverter Graphs
(AIG) [1] [5], NAND Graphs, OR-Inverter Graphs (OIG), AND-OR
Graphs (AOG), AND-OR-Inverter Graphs (AOIG), AND-XORInverter
Graphs, Reduced Boolean Circuits [8] does exist in
literature. In this work, we discuss a novel and efficient graph
realization for combinational logic circuits, represented using a
NAND-NOR-Inverter Graph (NNIG), which is composed of only
two-input NAND (NAND2), NOR (NOR2) and inverter (INV) cells.
The networks are constructed on the basis of irredundant disjunctive
and conjunctive normal forms, after factoring, comprising terms with
minimum support. Construction of a NNIG for a non-regenerative
function in normal form would be straightforward, whereas for the
complementary phase, it would be developed by considering a virtual
instance of the function. However, the choice of best NNIG for a
given function would be based upon literal count, cell count and
DAG node count of the implementation at the technology
independent stage. In case of a tie, the final decision would be made
after extracting the physical design parameters.
We have considered AIG representation for reduced disjunctive
normal form and the best of OIG/AOG/AOIG for the minimized
conjunctive normal forms. This is necessitated due to the nature of
certain functions, such as Achilles- heel functions. NNIGs are found
to exhibit 3.97% lesser node count compared to AIGs and
OIG/AOG/AOIGs; consume 23.74% and 10.79% lesser library cells
than AIGs and OIG/AOG/AOIGs for the various samples considered.
We compare the power efficiency and delay improvement achieved
by optimal NNIGs over minimal AIGs and OIG/AOG/AOIGs for
various case studies. In comparison with functionally equivalent,
irredundant and compact AIGs, NNIGs report mean savings in power
and delay of 43.71% and 25.85% respectively, after technology
mapping with a 0.35 micron TSMC CMOS process. For a
comparison with OIG/AOG/AOIGs, NNIGs demonstrate average
savings in power and delay by 47.51% and 24.83%. With respect to
device count needed for implementation with static CMOS logic
style, NNIGs utilize 37.85% and 33.95% lesser transistors than their
AIG and OIG/AOG/AOIG counterparts.
Abstract: In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a parallel algorithm for data assimilation with ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for oil reservoir history matching problem. The use of large number of observations from time-lapse seismic leads to a large turnaround time for the analysis step, in addition to the time consuming simulations of the realizations. For efficient parallelization it is important to consider parallel computation at the analysis step. Our experiments show that parallelization of the analysis step in addition to the forecast step has good scalability, exploiting the same set of resources with some additional efforts.
Abstract: The convergence of heterogeneous wireless access technologies characterizes the 4G wireless networks. In such converged systems, the seamless and efficient handoff between
different access technologies (vertical handoff) is essential and remains a challenging problem. The heterogeneous co-existence of access technologies with largely different characteristics creates a decision problem of determining the “best" available network at
“best" time to reduce the unnecessary handoffs. This paper proposes a dynamic decision model to decide the “best" network at “best"
time moment to handoffs. The proposed dynamic decision model make the right vertical handoff decisions by determining the “best"
network at “best" time among available networks based on, dynamic
factors such as “Received Signal Strength(RSS)" of network and
“velocity" of mobile station simultaneously with static factors like Usage Expense, Link capacity(offered bandwidth) and power
consumption. This model not only meets the individual user needs but also improve the whole system performance by reducing the unnecessary handoffs.
Abstract: This paper attempts to discuss the spam issue from the Malaysian e-mail users- perspective. The purpose is to discover how Malaysian users handle the spam e-mail problem. From the experiences we hope to discover the necessary effort needed to be undertaken to face this problem in the context of Malaysia. A survey was conducted to understand how Malaysian individual perceived spam and what they actually do with the spam e-mail they received in their daily life. The findings indicate that the level of awareness on spam issue in action is still low and need some extra effort by government and relevant agencies to increase their level of awareness.
Abstract: Shape optimization of the airfoil with high aspect ratio
of long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is performed by the
multi-objective optimization technology coupled with computational
fluid dynamics (CFD). For predicting the aerodynamic characteristics
around the airfoil the high-fidelity Navier-Stokes solver is employed
and SMOGA (Simple Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm), which is
developed by authors, is used for solving the multi-objective
optimization problem. To obtain the optimal solutions of the design
variable (i.e., sectional airfoil profile, wing taper ratio and sweep) for
high performance of UAVs, both the lift and lift-to-drag ratio are
maximized whereas the pitching moment should be minimized,
simultaneously. It is found that the lift force and lift-to-drag ratio are
linearly dependent and a unique and dominant solution are existed.
However, a trade-off phenomenon is observed between the lift-to-drag
ratio and pitching moment. As the result of optimization, sixty-five
(65) non-dominated Pareto individuals at the cutting edge of design
spaces that is decided by airfoil shapes can be obtained.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new method called ARPDC (Advanced Robust Parallel Distributed Compensation) for automatic control of nonlinear systems. This method improves a quality of robust control by interpolating of robust and optimal controller. The weight of each controller is determined by an original criteria function for model validity and disturbance appreciation. ARPDC method is based on nonlinear Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems and Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) control scheme. The relaxed stability conditions of ARPDC control of nominal system have been derived. The advantages of presented method are demonstrated on the inverse pendulum benchmark problem. From comparison between three different controllers (robust, optimal and ARPDC) follows, that ARPDC control is almost optimal with the robustness close to the robust controller. The results indicate that ARPDC algorithm can be a good alternative not only for a robust control, but in some cases also to an adaptive control of nonlinear systems.
Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of forbidden states in
non safe Petri Nets. In the system, for preventing it from entering the
forbidden states, some linear constraints can be assigned to them.
Then these constraints can be enforced on the system using control
places. But when the number of constraints in the system is large, a
large number of control places must be added to the model of system.
This concept complicates the model of system. There are some
methods for reducing the number of constraints in safe Petri Nets.
But there is no a systematic method for non safe Petri Nets. In this
paper we propose a method for reducing the number of constraints in
non safe Petri Nets which is based on solving an integer linear
programming problem.
Abstract: Restructured electricity markets may provide
opportunities for producers to exercise market power maintaining
prices in excess of competitive levels. In this paper an oligopolistic
market is presented that all Generation Companies (GenCos) bid in a
Cournot model. Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to obtain
generation scheduling of each GenCo as well as hourly market
clearing prices (MCP). In order to consider network constraints a
multiperiod framework is presented to simulate market clearing
mechanism in which the behaviors of market participants are
modelled through piecewise block curves. A mixed integer linear
programming (MILP) is employed to solve the problem. Impacts of
market clearing process on participants- characteristic and final
market prices are presented. Consequently, a novel multi-objective
model is addressed for security constrained optimal bidding strategy
of GenCos. The capability of price-maker GenCos to alter MCP is
evaluated through introducing an effective-supply curve. In addition,
the impact of exercising market power on the variation of market
characteristics as well as GenCos scheduling is studied.
Abstract: Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) is a method of determining
the most efficient, low-cost and reliable operation of a power
system by dispatching available electricity generation resources to
supply load on the system. The primary objective of economic
dispatch is to minimize total cost of generation while honoring
operational constraints of available generation resources. In this paper
an intelligent water drop (IWD) algorithm has been proposed to
solve ELD problem with an objective of minimizing the total cost of
generation. Intelligent water drop algorithm is a swarm-based natureinspired
optimization algorithm, which has been inspired from natural
rivers. A natural river often finds good paths among lots of possible
paths in its ways from source to destination and finally find almost
optimal path to their destination. These ideas are embedded into
the proposed algorithm for solving economic load dispatch problem.
The main advantage of the proposed technique is easy is implement
and capable of finding feasible near global optimal solution with
less computational effort. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of
the proposed method, it has been tested on 6-unit and 20-unit test
systems with incremental fuel cost functions taking into account the
valve point-point loading effects. Numerical results shows that the
proposed method has good convergence property and better in quality
of solution than other algorithms reported in recent literature.
Abstract: In this paper an ant colony optimization algorithm is
developed to solve the permutation flow shop scheduling problem. In
the permutation flow shop scheduling problem which has been vastly
studied in the literature, there are a set of m machines and a set of n
jobs. All the jobs are processed on all the machines and the sequence
of jobs being processed is the same on all the machines. Here this
problem is optimized considering two criteria, makespan and total
flow time. Then the results are compared with the ones obtained by
previously developed algorithms. Finally it is visible that our
proposed approach performs best among all other algorithms in the
literature.
Abstract: Stock portfolio selection is a classic problem in finance,
and it involves deciding how to allocate an institution-s or an individual-s
wealth to a number of stocks, with certain investment objectives
(return and risk). In this paper, we adopt the classical Markowitz
mean-variance model and consider an additional common realistic
constraint, namely, the cardinality constraint. Thus, stock portfolio
optimization becomes a mixed-integer quadratic programming problem
and it is difficult to be solved by exact optimization algorithms.
Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO), which mimics the molecular
interactions in a chemical reaction process, is a population-based
metaheuristic method. Two different types of CRO, named canonical
CRO and Super Molecule-based CRO (S-CRO), are proposed to solve
the stock portfolio selection problem. We test both canonical CRO
and S-CRO on a benchmark and compare their performance under
two criteria: Markowitz efficient frontier (Pareto frontier) and Sharpe
ratio. Computational experiments suggest that S-CRO is promising
in handling the stock portfolio optimization problem.
Abstract: The development of Artificial Neural Networks
(ANNs) is usually a slow process in which the human expert has to
test several architectures until he finds the one that achieves best
results to solve a certain problem. This work presents a new
technique that uses Genetic Programming (GP) for automatically
generating ANNs. To do this, the GP algorithm had to be changed in
order to work with graph structures, so ANNs can be developed. This
technique also allows the obtaining of simplified networks that solve
the problem with a small group of neurons. In order to measure the
performance of the system and to compare the results with other
ANN development methods by means of Evolutionary Computation
(EC) techniques, several tests were performed with problems based
on some of the most used test databases. The results of those
comparisons show that the system achieves good results comparable
with the already existing techniques and, in most of the cases, they
worked better than those techniques.
