Abstract: We report a lithography-free approach to fabricate the
biomimetics, quasi-beehive Si nanostructures (QBSNs), on
Si-substrates. The self-assembled SiGe nanoislands via the strain
induced surface roughening (Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld instability) during
in-situ annealing play a key role as patterned sacrifice regions for
subsequent reactive ion etching (RIE) process performed for
fabricating quasi-beehive nanostructures on Si-substrates. As the
measurements of field emission, the bare QBSNs show poor field
emission performance, resulted from the existence of the native oxide
layer which forms an insurmountable barrier for electron emission. In
order to dramatically improve the field emission characteristics, the
platinum nanopillars (Pt-NPs) were deposited on QBSNs to form
Pt-NPs/QBSNs heterostructures. The turn-on field of Pt-NPs/QBSNs
is as low as 2.29 V/μm (corresponding current density of 1 μA/cm2),
and the field enhancement factor (β-value) is significantly increased to
6067. More importantly, the uniform and continuous electrons excite
light emission, due to the surrounding filed emitters from
Pt-NPs/QBSNs, can be easily obtained. This approach does not require
an expensive photolithographic process and possesses great potential
for applications.
Abstract: The concentrations of As, Hg, Co, Cr and Cd were
tested for each soil sample, and their spatial patterns were analyzed
by the semivariogram approach of geostatistics and geographical
information system technology. Multivariate statistic approaches
(principal component analysis and cluster analysis) were used to
identify heavy metal sources and their spatial pattern. Principal
component analysis coupled with correlation between heavy metals
showed that primary inputs of As, Hg and Cd were due to
anthropogenic while, Co, and Cr were associated with pedogenic
factors. Ordinary kriging was carried out to map the spatial patters of
heavy metals. The high pollution sources evaluated was related with
usage of urban and industrial wastewater. The results of this study
helpful for risk assessment of environmental pollution for decision
making for industrial adjustment and remedy soil pollution.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to derive parameters
estimating for the Lyman–Kutcher–Burman (LKB) normal tissue
complication probability (NTCP) model using analysis of scintigraphy
assessments and quality of life (QoL) measurement questionnaires for
the parotid gland (xerostomia). In total, 31 patients with
head-and-neck (HN) cancer were enrolled. Salivary excretion factor
(SEF) and EORTC QLQ-H&N35 questionnaires datasets are used for
the NTCP modeling to describe the incidence of grade 4 xerostomia.
Assuming that n= 1, NTCP fitted parameters are given as TD50= 43.6
Gy, m= 0.18 in SEF analysis, and as TD50= 44.1 Gy, m= 0.11 in QoL
measurements, respectively. SEF and QoL datasets can validate the
Quantitative Analyses of Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic
(QUANTEC) guidelines well, resulting in NPV-s of 100% for the both
datasets and suggests that the QUANTEC 25/20Gy gland-spared
guidelines are suitable for clinical used for the HN cohort to
effectively avoid xerostomia.
Abstract: Stress Concentration Factors are significant in
machine design as it gives rise to localized stress when any change in
the design of surface or abrupt change in the cross section occurs.
Almost all machine components and structural members contain
some form of geometrical or microstructural discontinuities. These
discontinuities are very dangerous and lead to failure. So, it is very
much essential to analyze the stress concentration factors for critical
applications like Turbine Rotors. In this paper Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) with extremely fine mesh in the vicinity of the
blades of Steam Turbine Rotor is applied to determine stress
concentration factors. A model of Steam Turbine Rotor is shown in
Fig. 1.
Abstract: Participation in global trade means that Chinas vegetables and fruits industry faces international food safety standards and increased scrutiny worldwide. The objectives of this paper were to investigate how existing food safety standards and regulations in the importing countries impact the export of vegetables and fruits from China. This paper discussed the current and historical situations of Chinas vegetables and fruits export from 1996 to 2010, analyzed the Maximum Residual Limit (MRL) standards of pesticides imposed by importing countries, quantitatively estimated the impacts of food safety standards on Chinas vegetables and fruits export based on a gravity model. The results showed that although transportation distance between trade partners and tariff rates on vegetables and fruits were still the importantly resistant factors for China export, vegetables and fruits export was sensitive to the number of regulated pesticides, the strictness, and the level of food safety standards imposed by importing countries, which showed a significant trade flow effect, stricter food safety standards, increased number of regulated pesticides significantly inhibit China export of vegetables and fruits. Moreover, Chinas food safety standards also showed a significantly effect on vegetables and fruits export, which inhibited export to some extent. Abstract: An effort estimation model is needed for softwareintensive
projects that consist of hardware, embedded software or
some combination of the two, as well as high level software
solutions. This paper first focuses on functional decomposition
techniques to measure functional complexity of a computer system
and investigates its impact on system development effort. Later, it
examines effects of technical difficulty and design team capability
factors in order to construct the best effort estimation model. With
using traditional regression analysis technique, the study develops a
system development effort estimation model which takes functional
complexity, technical difficulty and design team capability factors as
input parameters. Finally, the assumptions of the model are tested.
Abstract: Reliable information about tool temperature
distribution is of central importance in metal cutting. In this study,
tool-chip interface temperature was determined in cutting of ST37
steel workpiece by applying HSS as the cutting tool in dry turning.
Two different approaches were implemented for temperature
measuring: an embedded thermocouple (RTD) in to the cutting tool
and infrared (IR) camera. Comparisons are made between
experimental data and results of MSC.SuperForm and FLUENT
software.
An investigation of heat generation in cutting tool was performed
by varying cutting parameters at the stable cutting tool geometry and
results were saved in a computer; then the diagrams of tool
temperature vs. various cutting parameters were obtained. The
experimental results reveal that the main factors of the increasing
cutting temperature are cutting speed (V ), feed rate ( S ) and depth
of cut ( h ), respectively. It was also determined that simultaneously
change in cutting speed and feed rate has the maximum effect on
increasing cutting temperature.
Abstract: This paper gives a novel method for improving
classification performance for cancer classification with very few
microarray Gene expression data. The method employs classification
with individual gene ranking and gene subset ranking. For selection
and classification, the proposed method uses the same classifier. The
method is applied to three publicly available cancer gene expression
datasets from Lymphoma, Liver and Leukaemia datasets. Three
different classifiers namely Support vector machines-one against all
(SVM-OAA), K nearest neighbour (KNN) and Linear Discriminant
analysis (LDA) were tested and the results indicate the improvement
in performance of SVM-OAA classifier with satisfactory results on
all the three datasets when compared with the other two classifiers.
Abstract: The company-s ability to draw on a range of external
sources to meet their needs for innovation, has been termed 'open
innovation' (OI). Very few empirical analyses have been conducted
on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to the extent that they
describe and understand the characteristics and implications of this
new paradigm.
The study's objective is to identify and characterize different
modes of OI, (considering innovation process phases and the variety
and breadth of the collaboration), determinants, barriers and
motivations in SMEs. Therefore a survey was carried out among
Italian manufacturing firms and a database of 105 companies was
obtained. With regard to data elaboration, a factorial and cluster
analysis has been conducted and three different OI modes have
emerged: selective low open, unselective open upstream, and mid-
partners integrated open. The different behaviours of the three
clusters in terms of determinants factors, performance, firm-s
technology intensity, barriers and motivations have been analyzed
and discussed.
Abstract: This research work takes a different approach in
the discussion of urban form impacts on transport planning and
auto dependency. Concentrated density represented by effective
density explains auto dependency better than the conventional
density and it is proved to be a realistic density representative for
the urban transportation analysis. Model analysis reveals that
effective density is influenced by the shopping accessibility
index as well as job density factor. It is also combined with the
job access variable to classify four levels of Transport Activity
Centers (TACs) in Okinawa, Japan. Trip attraction capacity and
levels of the newly classified TACs was found agreeable with the
amount of daily trips attracted to each center. The trip attraction
data set was drawn from a 2007 Okinawa personal trip survey.
This research suggests a planning methodology which guides
logical transport supply routes and concentrated local
development schemes.
Abstract: In this work, thermoelastic damping effect on the hemi- spherical shells is investigated. The material is selected silicon, and heat conduction equation for thermal flow is solved to obtain the temperature profile in which bending approximation with inextensional assumption of the model. Using the temperature profile, eigen-value analysis is performed to get the natural frequencies of hemispherical shells. Effects of mode numbers, radii and radial thicknesses of the model on the natural frequencies are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the quality factor (Q-factor) is defined, and discussed for the ring and hemispherical shell.
Abstract: Bidding is a very important business function to find
latent contractors of construction projects. Moreover, bid markup is
one of the most important decisions for a bidder to gain a reasonable
profit. Since the bidding system is a complex adaptive system, bidding
agent need a learning process to get more valuable knowledge for a bid,
especially from past public bidding information. In this paper, we
proposed an iterative agent leaning model for bidders to make markup
decisions. A classifier for public bidding information named PIBS is
developed to make full use of history data for classifying new bidding
information. The simulation and experimental study is performed to
show the validity of the proposed classifier. Some factors that affect
the validity of PIBS are also analyzed at the end of this work.
Abstract: Laser Profiler (LP) data from aerial laser surveys have
been increasingly used as topographical inputs to numerical
simulations of flooding and inundation in river basins. LP data has
great potential for reproducing topography, but its effective usage has
not yet been fully established. In this study, flooding and inundation
are simulated numerically using LP data for the Jobaru River basin of
Japan’s Saga Plain. The analysis shows that the topography is
reproduced satisfactorily in the computational domain with urban and
agricultural areas requiring different grid sizes. A 2-D numerical
simulation shows that flood flow behavior changes as grid size is
varied.
Abstract: Development of artificial neural network (ANN) for
prediction of aluminum workpieces' surface roughness in ultrasonicvibration
assisted turning (UAT) has been the subject of the present
study. Tool wear as the main cause of surface roughness was also
investigated. ANN was trained through experimental data obtained
on the basis of full factorial design of experiments. Various
influential machining parameters were taken into consideration. It
was illustrated that a multilayer perceptron neural network could
efficiently model the surface roughness as the response of the
network, with an error less than ten percent. The performance of the
trained network was verified by further experiments. The results of
UAT were compared with the results of conventional turning
experiments carried out with similar machining parameters except for
the vibration amplitude whence considerable reduction was observed
in the built-up edge and the surface roughness.
Abstract: A research effort to find the reality of the business of Japan-s software globalization of enterprise-level business software systems has found that while the number of Japan-made enterpriselevel software systems is comparable with those of the other G7 countries, the business is limited to the East and Southeast Asian markets. This indicates that this business has a problem in the European and USA markets. Based on the knowledge that the research has established, the research concludes that the communication problems arise from the lack of individualists' communication styles and foreign language skills in Japan's software globalization is compensated by similarities in certain Japanese cultural factors and Japan's cultural power in the East and Southeast Asian markets and that this business does not have this compensation factor in the European and American markets due to dissimilarities and no cultural power.
Abstract: The development of sustainable utilization water resources is crucial. The ecological environment and water resources systems form the foundation of the existence and development of the social economy. The urban ecological support system depends on these resources as well. This research studies the vulnerability, criticality, and risk of climate change on water supply and demand in the main administrative district of the Taijiang Area (Tainan City). Based on the two situations set in this paper and various factors (indexes), this research adopts two kinds of weights (equal and AHP) to conduct the calculation and establish the water supply and demand risk map for the target year 2039. According to the risk analysis result, which is based on equal weight, only one district belongs to a high-grade district (Grade 4). Based on the AHP weight, 16 districts belong to a high-grade or higher-grade district (Grades 4 and 5), and from among them, two districts belong to the highest grade (Grade 5). These results show that the risk level of water supply and demand in cities is higher than that in towns. The government generally gives more attention to the adjustment strategy in the “cities." However, it should also provide proper adjustment strategies for the “towns" to be able to cope with the risks of water supply and demand.
Abstract: This work presents a novel means of extracting fixedlength parameters from voice signals, such that words can be recognized
in linear time. The power and the zero crossing rate are first
calculated segment by segment from a voice signal; by doing so, two
feature sequences are generated. We then construct an FIR system
across these two sequences. The parameters of this FIR system, used
as the input of a multilayer proceptron recognizer, can be derived by
recursive LSE (least-square estimation), implying that the complexity of overall process is linear to the signal size. In the second part of
this work, we introduce a weighting factor λ to emphasize recent
input; therefore, we can further recognize continuous speech signals.
Experiments employ the voice signals of numbers, from zero to nine, spoken in Mandarin Chinese. The proposed method is verified to
recognize voice signals efficiently and accurately.
Abstract: Encryption and decryption in RSA are done by modular exponentiation which is achieved by repeated modular multiplication. Hence efficiency of modular multiplication directly determines the efficiency of RSA cryptosystem. This paper designs a Modified Montgomery Modular Multiplication in which addition of operands is computed by 4:2 compressor. The basic logic operations in addition are partitioned over two iterations such that parallel computations are performed. This reduces the critical path delay of proposed Montgomery design. The proposed design and RSA are implemented on Virtex 2 and Virtex 5 FPGAs. The two factors partitioning and parallelism have improved the frequency and throughput of proposed design.
Abstract: Since the actuator capacity is limited, in the real
application of active control systems under sever earthquakes it is
conceivable that the actuators saturate, hence the actuator saturation
should be considered as a constraint in design of optimal controllers.
In this paper optimal design of active controllers for nonlinear
structures by considering actuator saturation, has been studied. The
proposed method for designing optimal controllers is based on
defining an optimization problem which the objective has been to
minimize the maximum displacement of structure when a limited
capacity for actuator has been used. To this end a single degree of
freedom (SDF) structure with a bilinear hysteretic behavior has been
simulated under a white noise ground acceleration of different
amplitudes. Active tendon control mechanism, comprised of prestressed
tendons and an actuator, and extended nonlinear Newmark
method based instantaneous optimal control algorithm have been
used. To achieve the best results, the weights corresponding to
displacement, velocity, acceleration and control force in the
performance index have been optimized by the Distributed Genetic
Algorithm (DGA). Results show the effectiveness of the proposed
method in considering actuator saturation. Also based on the
numerical simulations it can be concluded that the actuator capacity
and the average value of required control force are two important
factors in designing nonlinear controllers which consider the actuator
saturation.
Abstract: These This paper looks into frameworks which aim at
furthering the discussion of the role of regenerative design practices
in a city-s historic core and the tool of urban design to achieve urban
revitalization on the island of Cyprus. It also examines the region-s
demographic mix, the effectiveness of its governmental coordination
and the strategies of adaptive reuse and strategic investments in older
areas with existing infrastructure. The two main prongs of
investigation will consider the effect of the existing and proposed
changes in the physical infrastructure and fabric of the city, as well as
the catalytic effect of sustainable urban design practices. Through this
process, the work hopes to integrate the contained potential within
the existing historic core and the contributions and participation of
the migrant and immigrant populations to the local economy. It also
examines ways in which this coupling of factors can bring to the front
the positive effects of this combined effort on an otherwise sluggish
local redevelopment effort. The data for this study is being collected
and organized as part of ongoing urban design and development
student workshop efforts in urban planning and design education.
The work is presented in graphic form and includes data collected
from interviews with study area organizations and the community at
large. Planning work is also based on best practices initiated by the
staff of the Nicosia Master Plan task force, which coordinates holistic
planning efforts for the historic center of the city of Nicosia.
