Abstract: Group contribution methods such as the UNIFAC are
very useful to researchers and engineers involved in synthesis,
feasibility studies, design and optimization of separation processes.
They can be applied successfully to predict phase equilibrium and
excess properties in the development of chemical and separation
processes. The main focus of this work was to investigate the
possibility of absorbing selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using three selected UNIFAC
group contribution methods. Absorption followed by subsequent
stripping is the predominant available abatement technology of
VOCs from flue gases prior to their release into the atmosphere. The
original, modified and effective UNIFAC models were used in this
work. The thirteen selected VOCs that have been considered in this
research are: pentane, hexane, heptanes, trimethylamine, toluene,
xylene, cyclohexane, butyl acetate, diethyl acetate, chloroform,
acetone, ethyl methyl ketone and isobutyl methyl ketone. The
computation was done for solute VOC concentration of 8.55x10-8
which is well in the infinite dilution region. The results obtained in
this study compare very well with those published in literature
obtained through both measurements and predictions. The phase
equilibrium obtained in this study show that PDMS is a good
absorbent for the removal of VOCs from contaminated air streams
through physical absorption.
Abstract: Composite pins of rubber dust collected from tyre
retreading centres of trucks, cars and buses etc.and epoxy with
weight percentages of 10. 15, and 20 % of rubber (weight fractions of
9, 13 and 17 % respectively) have been prepared in house with the
help of a split wooden mould. The pins were tested in a pin-on-disc
wear monitor to determine the co-efficient of friction and weight
losses with varying speeds, loads and time. The wear volume and
wear rates have also been found out for all these three specimens.. It
is observed that all the specimens have exhibited very low coefficient
of friction and low wear rates under dry sliding condition. Out of the
above three samples tested, the specimen with 10 % rubber dust by
weight has shown lowest wear rates. However a peculiar result i.e
decreasing trend has been obtained with 20% reinforcement of rubber
in epoxy while rubbed against steel at varying speeds. This might
have occurred due to high surface finish of the disc and formation of
a thin transfer layer from the composite
Abstract: It has been defined that the “network is the system".
This implies providing levels of service, reliability, predictability and
availability that are commensurate with or better than those that
individual computers provide today. To provide this requires
integrated network management for interconnected networks of
heterogeneous devices covering both the local campus. In this paper
we are addressing a framework to effectively deal with this issue. It
consists of components and interactions between them which are
required to perform the service fault management. A real-world
scenario is used to derive the requirements which have been applied
to the component identification. An analysis of existing frameworks
and approaches with respect to their applicability to the framework is
also carried out.
Abstract: Oilsands bitumen is an extremely important source of
energy for North America. However, due to the presence of large
molecules such as asphaltenes, the density and viscosity of the
bitumen recovered from these sands are much higher than those of
conventional crude oil. As a result the extracted bitumen has to be
diluted with expensive solvents, or thermochemically upgraded in
large, capital-intensive conventional upgrading facilities prior to
pipeline transport. This study demonstrates that globally abundant
natural zeolites such as clinoptilolite from Saint Clouds, New Mexico
and Ca-chabazite from Bowie, Arizona can be used as very effective
reagents for cracking and visbreaking of oilsands bitumen. Natural
zeolite cracked oilsands bitumen products are highly recoverable (up
to ~ 83%) using light hydrocarbons such as pentane, which indicates
substantial conversion of heavier fractions to lighter components.
The resultant liquid products are much less viscous, and have lighter
product distribution compared to those produced from pure thermal
treatment. These natural minerals impart similar effect on industrially
extracted Athabasca bitumen.
Abstract: In this paper, the effect of receive and/or transmit
antenna spacing on the performance (BER vs. SNR) of multipleantenna
systems is determined by using an RCS (Radar Cross
Section) channel model. In this physical model, the scatterers
existing in the propagation environment are modeled by their RCS so
that the correlation of the receive signal complex amplitudes, i.e.,
both magnitude and phase, can be estimated. The proposed RCS
channel model is then compared with classical models.
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence based gaming is an interesting topic in the state-of-art technology. This paper presents an automation of a tradition Omani game, called Al-Hawalees. Its related issues are resolved and implemented using artificial intelligence approach. An AI approach called mini-max procedure is incorporated to make a diverse budges of the on-line gaming. If number of moves increase, time complexity will be increased in terms of propositionally. In order to tackle the time and space complexities, we have employed a back propagation neural network (BPNN) to train in off-line to make a decision for resources required to fulfill the automation of the game. We have utilized Leverberg- Marquardt training in order to get the rapid response during the gaming. A set of optimal moves is determined by the on-line back propagation training fashioned with alpha-beta pruning. The results and analyses reveal that the proposed scheme will be easily incorporated in the on-line scenario with one player against the system.
Abstract: Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium measurements are reported for the binary mixtures of n-Butylamine and Triethylamine with Cumene at 97.3 kPa. The measurements have been performed using a vapor recirculating type (modified Othmer's) equilibrium still. The binary mixture of n-Butylamine + Cumene shows positive deviation from ideality. Triethylamine + Cumene mixture shows negligible deviation from ideality. None of the systems form an azeotrope. The activity coefficients have been calculated taking into consideration the vapor phase nonideality. The data satisfy the thermodynamic consistency test of Herington. The activity coefficients have been satisfactorily correlated by means of the Margules, NRTL, and Black equations. The activity coefficient values obtained by the UNIFAC model are also reported.
Abstract: This article summarizes ways to verify neutron
fluence for neutron transmutation doping of silicon with phosphorus
on the LVR-15 reactor. Neutron fluence is determined using
activation detectors placed along the crystal in a strip or encapsulated
in a rod holder. Holders are placed at the centre of a water-filled
capsule or in an aluminum or silicon ingot that simulates a real single
crystal. If the diameter of the crystal is significantly less than the
capsule diameter and water from the primary circuit enters the free
space in the capsule, neutron interaction in the water changes neutron
fluence, affecting axial irradiation homogeneity. The effect of
moving the capsule vertically in the channel relative to maximum
neutron fluence in the reactor core was also measured. Even a small
shift of the capsule-s centre causes great irradiation inhomogeneity.
This effect was measured using activation detectors, and was also
confirmed by MCNP calculation.
Abstract: In this paper, the periodic surveillance scheme has
been proposed for any convex region using mobile wireless sensor
nodes. A sensor network typically consists of fixed number of
sensor nodes which report the measurements of sensed data such as
temperature, pressure, humidity, etc., of its immediate proximity
(the area within its sensing range). For the purpose of sensing an
area of interest, there are adequate number of fixed sensor
nodes required to cover the entire region of interest. It implies
that the number of fixed sensor nodes required to cover a given
area will depend on the sensing range of the sensor as well as
deployment strategies employed. It is assumed that the sensors to
be mobile within the region of surveillance, can be mounted on
moving bodies like robots or vehicle. Therefore, in our
scheme, the surveillance time period determines the number of
sensor nodes required to be deployed in the region of interest.
The proposed scheme comprises of three algorithms namely:
Hexagonalization, Clustering, and Scheduling, The first algorithm
partitions the coverage area into fixed sized hexagons that
approximate the sensing range (cell) of individual sensor node.
The clustering algorithm groups the cells into clusters, each of
which will be covered by a single sensor node. The later
determines a schedule for each sensor to serve its respective cluster.
Each sensor node traverses all the cells belonging to the cluster
assigned to it by oscillating between the first and the last cell for
the duration of its life time. Simulation results show that our
scheme provides full coverage within a given period of time using
few sensors with minimum movement, less power consumption,
and relatively less infrastructure cost.
Abstract: The Application of e-health solutions has brought superb advancements in the health care industry. E-health solutions have already been embraced in the industrialized countries. In an effort to catch up with the growth, the developing countries have strived to revolutionize the healthcare industry by use of Information technology in different ways. Based on a technology assessment carried out in Kenya – one of the developing countries – and using multiple case studies in Nyanza Province, this work focuses on an investigation on how five rural hospitals are adapting to the technology shift. The issues examined include the ICT infrastructure and e-health technologies in place, the knowledge of participants in terms of benefits gained through the use of ICT and the challenges posing barriers to the use of ICT technologies in these hospitals. The results reveal that the ICT infrastructure in place is inadequate for e-health implementations as a result to various challenges that exist. Consequently, suggestions on how to tackle the various challenges have been addressed in this paper.
Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any existing
network infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the
limited transmission range of wireless network interfaces, multiple
"hops" may be needed to exchange data across the network. In order
to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is
used to discover routes between nodes. The primary goal of such an
ad hoc network routing protocol is correct and efficient route
establishment between a pair of nodes so that messages may be
delivered in a timely manner. Route construction should be done
with a minimum of overhead and bandwidth consumption. This paper
examines two routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks– the
Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), the table- driven
protocol and the Ad hoc On- Demand Distance Vector routing
(AODV), an On –Demand protocol and evaluates both protocols
based on packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load, average
delay and throughput while varying number of nodes, speed and
pause time.
Abstract: In this paper we propose and examine an Adaptive
Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in Smoothing Transition
Autoregressive (STAR) modeling. Because STAR models follow
fuzzy logic approach, in the non-linear part fuzzy rules can be
incorporated or other training or computational methods can be
applied as the error backpropagation algorithm instead to nonlinear
squares. Furthermore, additional fuzzy membership functions can be
examined, beside the logistic and exponential, like the triangle,
Gaussian and Generalized Bell functions among others. We examine
two macroeconomic variables of US economy, the inflation rate and
the 6-monthly treasury bills interest rates.
Abstract: Two optimized strategies were successfully established
to develop biomolecule-based magnetic nanoassemblies.
Streptavidin-coated and amine-coated magnetic nanoparticles were
chosen as model scaffolds onto which double-stranded DNA and
human immunoglobulin G were specifically conjugated in succession,
using biotin-streptavidin interaction or covalent cross-linkers. The
success of this study opens the prospect of developing selective and
sensitive nanoparticle-based structures for diagnostics or drug
delivery.
Abstract: The paper examines the theories of media, dominant
effects and critical and cultural theories that are used to examine
media and society issues, and then apply the theories to explore the
current situation of news media in Arab societies. The research is
meant to explore the nature of media in the Arab world and the way
that modern technologies have changed the nature of the Arab public
sphere. It considers the role of an open press in promoting a more
democratic society, while recognizing the unique qualities of an Arab
culture.
Abstract: In this paper a comprehensive model of a fossil fueled
power plant (FFPP) is developed in order to evaluate the
performance of a newly designed turbine follower controller.
Considering the drawbacks of previous works, an overall model is
developed to minimize the error between each subsystem model
output and the experimental data obtained at the actual power plant.
The developed model is organized in two main subsystems namely;
Boiler and Turbine. Considering each FFPP subsystem
characteristics, different modeling approaches are developed. For
economizer, evaporator, superheater and reheater, first order models
are determined based on principles of mass and energy conservation.
Simulations verify the accuracy of the developed models. Due to the
nonlinear characteristics of attemperator, a new model, based on a
genetic-fuzzy systems utilizing Pittsburgh approach is developed
showing a promising performance vis-à-vis those derived with other
methods like ANFIS. The optimization constraints are handled
utilizing penalty functions. The effect of increasing the number of
rules and membership functions on the performance of the proposed
model is also studied and evaluated. The turbine model is developed
based on the equation of adiabatic expansion. Parameters of all
evaluated models are tuned by means of evolutionary algorithms.
Based on the developed model a fuzzy PI controller is developed. It
is then successfully implemented in the turbine follower control
strategy of the plant. In this control strategy instead of keeping
control parameters constant, they are adjusted on-line with regard to
the error and the error rate. It is shown that the response of the
system improves significantly. It is also shown that fuel consumption
decreases considerably.
Abstract: This paper describes Nano-particle based Planar Laser
Scattering (NPLS) flow visualization of angled supersonic jets into a
supersonic cross flow based on the HYpersonic Low TEmperature
(HYLTE) nozzle which was widely used in DF chemical laser. In
order to investigate the non-reacting flowfield in the HYLTE nozzle, a
testing section with windows was designed and manufactured. The
impact of secondary fluids orifice separation on mixing was examined.
For narrow separation of orifices, the secondary fuel penetration
increased obviously compared to diluent injection, which means
smaller separation of diluent and fuel orifices would enhance the
mixing of fuel and oxidant. Secondary injections with angles of 30, 40
and 50 degrees were studied. It was found that the injectant
penetration increased as the injection angle increased, while the
interfacial surface area to entrain the freestream fluid is largest when
the injection angle is 40 degree.
Abstract: Contact centres have been exemplars of scientific management in the discipline of operations management for more than a decade now. With the movement of industries from a resource based economy to knowledge based economy businesses have started to realize the customer eccentricity being the key to sustainability amidst high velocity of the market. However, as technologies have converged and advanced, so have the contact centres. Contact Centres have redirected the supply chains and the concept of retailing is highly diminished due to over exaggeration of cost reduction strategies. In conditions of high environmental velocity together with services featuring considerable information intensity contact centres will require up to date and enlightened agents to satisfy the demands placed upon them by those requesting their services. In this paper we examine salient factors such as Power Distance, Knowledge structures and the dynamics of job specialisation and enlargement to suggest critical success factors in the domain of contact centres.
Abstract: Single crystals of Magnesium alloys such as pure Mg,
Mg-1Zn-0.5Y, Mg-0.1Y, and Mg-0.1Ce alloys were successfully
fabricated in this study by employing the modified Bridgman method.
To determine the exact orientation of crystals, pole figure
measurement using X-ray diffraction were carried out on each single
crystal. Hardness and compression tests were conducted followed by
subsequent recrysatllization annealing. Recrystallization kinetics of
Mg alloy single crystals has been investigated. Fabricated single
crystals were cut into rectangular shaped specimen and solution
treated at 400oC for 24 hrs, and then deformed in compression mode
by 30% reduction. Annealing treatment for recrystallization has been
conducted on these cold-rolled plates at temperatures of 300oC for
various times from 1 to 20 mins. The microstructure observation and
hardness measurement conducted on the recrystallized specimens
revealed that static recrystallization of ternary alloy single crystal was
very slow, while recrystallization behavior of binary alloy single
crystals appeared to be very fast.
Abstract: The motion planning technique described in this paper has been developed to eliminate or reduce the residual vibrations of belt-driven rotary platforms, while maintaining unchanged the motion time and the total angular displacement of the platform. The proposed approach is based on a suitable choice of the motion command given to the servomotor that drives the mechanical device; this command is defined by some numerical coefficients which determine the shape of the displacement, velocity and acceleration profiles. Using a numerical optimization technique, these coefficients can be changed without altering the continuity conditions imposed on the displacement and its time derivatives at the initial and final time instants. The proposed technique can be easily and quickly implemented on an actual device, since it requires only a simple modification of the motion command profile mapped in the memory of the electronic motion controller.
Abstract: This study employs the use of the fourth order
Numerov scheme to determine the eigenstates and eigenvalues of
particles, electrons in particular, in single and double delta function
potentials. For the single delta potential, it is found that the
eigenstates could only be attained by using specific potential depths.
The depth of the delta potential well has a value that varies depending
on the delta strength. These depths are used for each well on the
double delta function potential and the eigenvalues are determined.
There are two bound states found in the computation, one with a
symmetric eigenstate and another one which is antisymmetric.
