Abstract: A study was carried out to determine the effect of water quality on flotation performance. The experimental test work comprised of batch flotation tests using Denver lab cell for a period of 10 minutes. Nine different test runs were carried out in triplicates to ensure reproducibility using different water types from different thickener overflows, return and sewage effluent water (process water) and portable water. The water sources differed in pH, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids and conductivity. Process water was found to reduce the concentrate recovery and mass pull, while portable water increased the concentrate recovery and mass pull. Portable water reduced the concentrate grade while process water increased the concentrate grade. It is proposed that a combination of process water and portable water supply be used in flotation circuits to balance the different effects that the different water types have on the flotation efficiency.
Abstract: The recognition of human faces, especially those with
different orientations is a challenging and important problem in image
analysis and classification. This paper proposes an effective scheme
for rotation invariant face recognition using Log-Polar Transform and
Discrete Cosine Transform combined features. The rotation invariant
feature extraction for a given face image involves applying the logpolar
transform to eliminate the rotation effect and to produce a row
shifted log-polar image. The discrete cosine transform is then applied
to eliminate the row shift effect and to generate the low-dimensional
feature vector. A PSO-based feature selection algorithm is utilized to
search the feature vector space for the optimal feature subset.
Evolution is driven by a fitness function defined in terms of
maximizing the between-class separation (scatter index).
Experimental results, based on the ORL face database using testing
data sets for images with different orientations; show that the
proposed system outperforms other face recognition methods. The
overall recognition rate for the rotated test images being 97%,
demonstrating that the extracted feature vector is an effective rotation
invariant feature set with minimal set of selected features.
Abstract: Digital watermarking is one of the techniques for
copyright protection. In this paper, a normalization-based robust
image watermarking scheme which encompasses singular value
decomposition (SVD) and discrete cosine transform (DCT)
techniques is proposed. For the proposed scheme, the host image is
first normalized to a standard form and divided into non-overlapping
image blocks. SVD is applied to each block. By concatenating the
first singular values (SV) of adjacent blocks of the normalized image,
a SV block is obtained. DCT is then carried out on the SV blocks to
produce SVD-DCT blocks. A watermark bit is embedded in the highfrequency
band of a SVD-DCT block by imposing a particular
relationship between two pseudo-randomly selected DCT
coefficients. An adaptive frequency mask is used to adjust local
watermark embedding strength. Watermark extraction involves
mainly the inverse process. The watermark extracting method is blind
and efficient. Experimental results show that the quality degradation
of watermarked image caused by the embedded watermark is visually
transparent. Results also show that the proposed scheme is robust
against various image processing operations and geometric attacks.

Abstract: Document image processing has become an
increasingly important technology in the automation of office
documentation tasks. During document scanning, skew is inevitably
introduced into the incoming document image. Since the algorithm
for layout analysis and character recognition are generally very
sensitive to the page skew. Hence, skew detection and correction in
document images are the critical steps before layout analysis. In this
paper, a novel skew detection method is presented for binary
document images. The method considered the some selected
characters of the text which may be subjected to thinning and Hough
transform to estimate skew angle accurately. Several experiments
have been conducted on various types of documents such as
documents containing English Documents, Journals, Text-Book,
Different Languages and Document with different fonts, Documents
with different resolutions, to reveal the robustness of the proposed
method. The experimental results revealed that the proposed method
is accurate compared to the results of well-known existing methods.
Abstract: In illumination variant face recognition, existing
methods extracting face albedo as light normalized image may lead to
loss of extensive facial details, with light template discarded. To
improve that, a novel approach for realistic facial texture
reconstruction by combining original image and albedo image is
proposed. First, light subspaces of different identities are established
from the given reference face images; then by projecting the original
and albedo image into each light subspace respectively, texture
reference images with corresponding lighting are reconstructed and
two texture subspaces are formed. According to the projections in
texture subspaces, facial texture with normal light can be synthesized.
Due to the combination of original image, facial details can be
preserved with face albedo. In addition, image partition is applied to
improve the synthesization performance. Experiments on Yale B and
CMUPIE databases demonstrate that this algorithm outperforms the
others both in image representation and in face recognition.
Abstract: Ozone (O3) is considered as one of the most
phytotoxic pollutants with deleterious effects on living and non living
components of Ecosystems. It reduces growth and yield of many
crops as well as alters the physiology and crop quality. The present
study described series of experiments to investigate the effects of
ambient O3 at different locations with different ambient levels of O3
depending on proximity to pollutant source and ranged between 17
ppb/h in control experiment to 112 ppb/h in industrial area
respectively. The ambient levels in other three locations (King Saud
University botanical garden, King Fahd Rd, and Almanakh Garden)
were 61,61,77 ppb/h respectively. Tow legume crops species (vicia
vaba L ; and Pisum sativum) differ in their phenology and sensitivity
were used. The results showed a significant negative effect to ozone
on morphology, number of injured leaves, growth and productivity
with a difference in the degree of response depending on the plant
type. Visia Faba showed sensitivity to ozone to number and leaf area
and the degree of injury leaves 3, pisum sativum show higher
sensitivity for the gas for degree of injury 1,The relative growth rate
and seed weight, it turns out there is no significant difference
between the two plants in plant height and number of seeds.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an adaptation of the Patricia-Tree for sparse datasets to generate non redundant rule associations. Using this adaptation, we can generate frequent closed itemsets that are more compact than frequent itemsets used in Apriori approach. This adaptation has been experimented on a set of datasets benchmarks.
Abstract: To achieve accurate and precise results of finite
element analysis (FEA) of bones, it is important to represent the
load/boundary conditions as identical as possible to the human body
such as the bone properties, the type and force of the muscles, the
contact force of the joints, and the location of the muscle attachment.
In this study, the difference in the Von-Mises stress and the total
deformation was compared by classifying them into Case 1, which
shows the actual anatomical form of the muscle attached to the femur
when the same muscle force was applied, and Case 2, which gives a
simplified representation of the attached location. An inverse
dynamical musculoskeletal model was simulated using data from an
actual walking experiment to complement the accuracy of the
muscular force, the input value of FEA. The FEA method using the
results of the muscular force that were calculated through the
simulation showed that the maximum Von-Mises stress and the
maximum total deformation in Case 2 were underestimated by 8.42%
and 6.29%, respectively, compared to Case 1. The torsion energy and
bending moment at each location of the femur occurred via the stress
ingredient. Due to the geometrical/morphological feature of the femur
of having a long bone shape when the stress distribution is wide, as
shown in Case 1, a greater Von-Mises stress and total deformation are
expected from the sum of the stress ingredients. More accurate results
can be achieved only when the muscular strength and the attachment
location in the FEA of the bones and the attachment form are the same
as those in the actual anatomical condition under the various moving
conditions of the human body.
Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained
tremendous attention in recent years due to their numerous
applications. Due to the limited energy resource, energy efficient
operation of sensor nodes is a key issue in wireless sensor networks.
Cooperative caching which ensures sharing of data among various
nodes reduces the number of communications over the wireless
channels and thus enhances the overall lifetime of a wireless sensor
network. In this paper, we propose a cooperative caching scheme
called ZCS (Zone Cooperation at Sensors) for wireless sensor
networks. In ZCS scheme, one-hop neighbors of a sensor node form a
cooperative cache zone and share the cached data with each other.
Simulation experiments show that the ZCS caching scheme achieves
significant improvements in byte hit ratio and average query latency
in comparison with other caching strategies.
Abstract: A study of the obtainable watermark data rate for information hiding algorithms is presented in this paper. As the perceptual entropy for wideband monophonic audio signals is in the range of four to five bits per sample, a significant amount of additional information can be inserted into signal without causing any perceptual distortion. Experimental results showed that transform domain watermark embedding outperforms considerably watermark embedding in time domain and that signal decompositions with a high gain of transform coding, like the wavelet transform, are the most suitable for high data rate information hiding. Keywords?Digital watermarking, information hiding, audio watermarking, watermark data rate.
Abstract: A boundary layer wind tunnel facility has been
adopted in order to conduct experimental measurements of the flow field around a model of the Panorama Giustinelli Building, Trieste
(Italy). Information on the main flow structures has been obtained by means of flow visualization techniques and has been compared to the
numerical predictions of the vortical structures spread on top of the roof, in order to investigate the optimal positioning for a vertical-axis
wind energy conversion system, registering a good agreement between experimental measurements and numerical predictions.
Abstract: The plastic forming process of sheet plate takes an
important place in forming metals. The traditional techniques of tool
design for sheet forming operations used in industry are experimental
and expensive methods. Prediction of the forming results,
determination of the punching force, blank holder forces and the
thickness distribution of the sheet metal will decrease the production
cost and time of the material to be formed. In this paper, multi-stage
deep drawing simulation of an Industrial Part has been presented
with finite element method. The entire production steps with
additional operations such as intermediate annealing and springback
has been simulated by ABAQUS software under axisymmetric
conditions. The simulation results such as sheet thickness
distribution, Punch force and residual stresses have been extracted in
any stages and sheet thickness distribution was compared with
experimental results. It was found through comparison of results, the
FE model have proven to be in close agreement with those of
experiment.
Abstract: The background estimation approach using a small
window median filter is presented on the bases of analyzing IR point
target, noise and clutter model. After simplifying the two-dimensional
filter, a simple method of adopting one-dimensional median filter is
illustrated to make estimations of background according to the
characteristics of IR scanning system. The adaptive threshold is used
to segment canceled image in the background. Experimental results
show that the algorithm achieved good performance and satisfy the
requirement of big size image-s real-time processing.
Abstract: The acidity of different raw Jordanian clays
containing zeolite, bentonite, red and white kaolinite and diatomite
was characterized by means of temperature programmed desorption
(TPD) of ammonia, conversion of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBOH),
FTIR and BET-measurements. FTIR spectra proved presence of
silanol and bridged hydroxyls on the clay surface. The number of
acidic sites was calculated from experimental TPD-profiles. We
observed the decrease of surface acidity correlates with the decrease
of Si/Al ratio except for diatomite. On the TPD-plot for zeolite two
maxima were registered due to different strength of surface acidic
sites. Values of MBOH conversion, product yields and selectivity
were calculated for the catalysis on Jordanian clays. We obtained that
all clay samples are able to convert MBOH into a major product
which is 3-methyl-3-buten-1-yne (MBYNE) catalyzed by acid
surface sites with the selectivity close to 70%. There was found a
correlation between MBOH conversion and acidity of clays
determined by TPD-NH3, i.e. the higher the acidity the higher the
conversion of MBOH. However, diatomite provided the lowest
conversion of MBOH as result of poor polarization of silanol groups.
Comparison of surface areas and conversions revealed the highest
density of active sites for red kaolinite and the lowest for zeolite and
diatomite.
Abstract: This paper presents the design, analysis and
development of permanent magnet (PM) torque couplers. These
couplers employ rare-earth magnets. Based on finite element analysis
and earlier analytical works both concentric and face-type
synchronous type couplers have been designed and fabricated. The
experimental performance has good correlation with finite element
calculations.
Abstract: In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a parallel algorithm for data assimilation with ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for oil reservoir history matching problem. The use of large number of observations from time-lapse seismic leads to a large turnaround time for the analysis step, in addition to the time consuming simulations of the realizations. For efficient parallelization it is important to consider parallel computation at the analysis step. Our experiments show that parallelization of the analysis step in addition to the forecast step has good scalability, exploiting the same set of resources with some additional efforts.
Abstract: Given a parallel program to be executed on a heterogeneous
computing system, the overall execution time of the program
is determined by a schedule. In this paper, we analyze the worst-case
performance of the list scheduling algorithm for scheduling tasks
of a parallel program in a mixed-machine heterogeneous computing
system such that the total execution time of the program is minimized.
We prove tight lower and upper bounds for the worst-case
performance ratio of the list scheduling algorithm. We also examine
the average-case performance of the list scheduling algorithm. Our
experimental data reveal that the average-case performance of the list
scheduling algorithm is much better than the worst-case performance
and is very close to optimal, except for large systems with large
heterogeneity. Thus, the list scheduling algorithm is very useful in
real applications.
Abstract: The stilling basins are commonly used to dissipate the
energy and protect the downstream floor from erosion. The aim of
the present experimental work is to improve the roughened stilling
basin using T-shape roughness instead of the regular cubic one and
design this new shape. As a result of the present work the best
intensity and the best roughness length are identified. Also, it is
found that the T-shape roughness save materials and reduce the jump
length compared to the cubic one. Sensitivity analysis was performed
and it was noticed that the change in the length of jump is more
sensitive to the change in roughness length than the change in
intensity.
Abstract: This paper presents a threshold voltage model of pocket implanted sub-100 nm n-MOSFETs incorporating the drain and substrate bias effects using two linear pocket profiles. Two linear equations are used to simulate the pocket profiles along the channel at the surface from the source and drain edges towards the center of the n-MOSFET. Then the effective doping concentration is derived and is used in the threshold voltage equation that is obtained by solving the Poisson-s equation in the depletion region at the surface. Simulated threshold voltages for various gate lengths fit well with the experimental data already published in the literature. The simulated result is compared with the two other pocket profiles used to derive the threshold voltage models of n-MOSFETs. The comparison shows that the linear model has a simple compact form that can be utilized to study and characterize the pocket implanted advanced ULSI devices.
