Abstract: High-frequency (HF) communications have been used by military organizations for more than 90 years. The opportunity of very long range communications without the need for advanced equipment makes HF a convenient and inexpensive alternative of satellite communications. Besides the advantages, voice and data transmission over HF is a challenging task, because the HF channel generally suffers from Doppler shift and spread, multi-path, cochannel interference, and many other sources of noise. In constructing an HF data modem, all these effects must be taken into account. STANAG 4539 is a NATO standard for high-speed data transmission over HF. It allows data rates up to 12800 bps over an HF channel of 3 kHz. In this work, an efficient implementation of STANAG 4539 on a single Texas Instruments- TMS320C6747 DSP chip is described. The state-of-the-art algorithms used in the receiver and the efficiency of the implementation enables real-time high-speed data / digitized voice transmission over poor HF channels.
Abstract: A numbers of important developments have led to an
increasing attractiveness for very high speed electrical machines
(either motor or generator). Specifically the increasing switching
speed of power electronics, high energy magnets, high strength
retaining materials, better high speed bearings and improvements in
design analysis are the primary drivers in a move to higher speed. The
design challenges come in the mechanical design both in terms of
strength and resonant modes and in the electromagnetic design
particularly in respect of iron losses and ac losses in the various
conducting parts including the rotor. This paper describes detailed
design work which has been done on a 50,000 rpm, 50kW permanent
magnet( PM) synchronous machine. It describes work on
electromagnetic and rotor eddy current losses using a variety of
methods including both 2D finite element analysis
Abstract: In this paper, the main principles of text-to-speech synthesis system are presented. Associated problems which arise when developing speech synthesis system are described. Used approaches and their application in the speech synthesis systems for Azerbaijani language are shown.
Abstract: Turbulence studies were made in the wake of a rotating
circular cylinder in a uniform free stream. The interest was to
examine the turbulence properties at the suppression of periodicity in
vortex formation process. An experimental study of the turbulent near
wake of a rotating circular cylinder was made at a Reynolds number
of 9000 for velocity ratios, λ between 0 and 2.7. Hot-wire
anemometry and particle image velocimetry results indicate that the
rotation of the cylinder causes significant changes in the vortical
activities. The turbulence quantities are getting smaller as λ increases
due to suppression of coherent vortex structures.
Abstract: By incorporating a prey refuge, this paper proposes new discrete Leslie–Gower predator–prey systems with and without Allee effect. The existence of fixed points are established and the stability of fixed points are discussed by analyzing the modulus of characteristic roots.
Abstract: Gamboge disorder (GD) or fruit damage by the yellow sap is a major problem in mangosteen. Mangosteen plants varied in the level of GD, from very low or non GD to low, moderate and high GD. However it was difficult to differentiate between GD and non GD plants because evaluation of the disorder is strongly influenced by environment. In this study we investigated the usefulness of primer designed from bioinformatics related to cell wall strength, termed as MCWS, to predict GD. Plant materials used were 28 mangosteen plants selected based on percentage of GD categorized as high, moderate, low and very low or non GD. The result showed that the specific DNA fragments were absent in the high GD accessions. The MCWS marker suggests as a novel polymorphic marker for GD in mangosteen as well as a marker for detect variability in mangosteen as apomictic plant.
Abstract: Determination of wellbore problems during a
production/injection process might be evaluated thorough
temperature log analysis. Other applications of this kind of log
analysis may also include evaluation of fluid distribution analysis
along the wellbore and identification of anomalies encountered
during production/injection process. While the accuracy of such
prediction is paramount, the common method of determination of a
wellbore temperature log includes use of steady-state energy balance
equations, which hardly describe the real conditions as observed in
typical oil and gas flowing wells during production operation; and
thus increase level of uncertainties. In this study, a practical method
has been proposed through development of a simplified semianalytical
model to apply for predicting temperature profile along the
wellbore. The developed model includes an overall heat transfer
coefficient accounting all modes of heat transferring mechanism,
which has been focused on the prediction of a temperature profile as
a function of depth for the injection/production wells. The model has
been validated with the results obtained from numerical simulation.
Abstract: Purpose of this paper is two-folded. At first it explains
the major problems that are causing stagnation in brownfield
redevelopment. In addition, these problems given the context of the
present multi-actor built environment are becoming more complex to
observe. Therefore, this paper suggests also a prospective decisionmaking
approach that is the most appropriate to observe and react on
the given stagnation problems. Such an approach should be regarded
as prescriptive-interactive decision-making approach, a barely
established branch. This approach should offer models that have
prescriptive as well as an interactive component enabling them to
successfully cope with the multi-actor environment. Overall, this
paper provides up-to-date insight on the brownfield stagnation by
gradually introducing the nowadays major problems and offers a
prospective decision-making approach how these problems could be
tackled.
Abstract: Modern building automation needs to deal with very
different types of demands, depending on the use of a building and the
persons acting in it. To meet the requirements of situation awareness
in modern building automation, scenario recognition becomes more
and more important in order to detect sequences of events and to react
to them properly. We present two concepts of scenario recognition
and their implementation, one based on predefined templates and the
other applying an unsupervised learning algorithm using statistical
methods. Implemented applications will be described and their advantages
and disadvantages will be outlined.
Abstract: The Taiwan government has invested approximately
21 billion NT dollars in the construction of bicycle paths since
bicycling has gained huge popularity as a healthy leisure and
recreational activity. This study focuses on the behavior of
recreational bicyclists in Danshuei and Bali, northern Taiwan. Data
were collected from a field investigation carried out along the
Danshuei bicycle path and Bali left-bank bicycle path. A total of 578
questionnaires were gathered for data analysis. Descriptive statistics
and Chi-Square tests were used to assess bicyclists- behaviors. The
frequency shows that, in these areas, Danshuei and Bali, most
bicyclists rented bicycles, rode the bicycle path in the afternoon for
about 2 hours. The used the bicycle path one time per week. For most,
it was the first time to ride these bicycle paths. There were significant
differences in distribution of bicycle ownership, time of day, duration
of ride, ride frequency, and whether riding occurred on weekdays or
weekends. Results indicated that most bicyclists in Danshuei and Bali
were infrequent users.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a fixed formatting method of PPX(Pretty Printer for XML). PPX is a query language for XML database which has extensive formatting capability that produces HTML as the result of a query. The fixed formatting method is to completely specify the combination of variables and layout specification operators within the layout expression of the GENERATE clause of PPX. In the experiment, a quick comparison shows that PPX requires far less description compared to XSLT or XQuery programs doing the same tasks.
Abstract: This paper presents a new color face image database
for benchmarking of automatic face detection algorithms and human
skin segmentation techniques. It is named the VT-AAST image
database, and is divided into four parts. Part one is a set of 286 color
photographs that include a total of 1027 faces in the original format
given by our digital cameras, offering a wide range of difference in
orientation, pose, environment, illumination, facial expression and
race. Part two contains the same set in a different file format. The
third part is a set of corresponding image files that contain human
colored skin regions resulting from a manual segmentation
procedure. The fourth part of the database has the same regions
converted into grayscale. The database is available on-line for
noncommercial use. In this paper, descriptions of the database
development, organization, format as well as information needed for
benchmarking of algorithms are depicted in detail.
Abstract: This paper describes Clinical Document Architecture Release Two (CDA R2) standard and a client application for messaging with SAĞLIK-NET project developed by The Ministry of Health of Turkey. CDA R2 , developed by Health Level 7 (HL7) organization and approved by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 2004, to standardize medical information to be able to share semantically and syntactically. In this study, a client application compatible with HL7 V3 for a project named SAĞLIKNET, aimed to build a National Health Information System by Turkey. Moreover, CDA conformance of this application will also be evaluated.
Abstract: This research presents a system for post processing of
data that takes mined flat rules as input and discovers crisp as well as
fuzzy hierarchical structures using Learning Classifier System
approach. Learning Classifier System (LCS) is basically a machine
learning technique that combines evolutionary computing,
reinforcement learning, supervised or unsupervised learning and
heuristics to produce adaptive systems. A LCS learns by interacting
with an environment from which it receives feedback in the form of
numerical reward. Learning is achieved by trying to maximize the
amount of reward received. Crisp description for a concept usually
cannot represent human knowledge completely and practically. In the
proposed Learning Classifier System initial population is constructed
as a random collection of HPR–trees (related production rules) and
crisp / fuzzy hierarchies are evolved. A fuzzy subsumption relation is
suggested for the proposed system and based on Subsumption Matrix
(SM), a suitable fitness function is proposed. Suitable genetic
operators are proposed for the chosen chromosome representation
method. For implementing reinforcement a suitable reward and
punishment scheme is also proposed. Experimental results are
presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed system.
Abstract: In manufacturing industries, development of measurement leads to increase the number of monitoring variables and eventually the importance of multivariate control comes to the fore. Statistical process control (SPC) is one of the most widely used as multivariate control chart. Nevertheless, SPC is restricted to apply in processes because its assumption of data as following specific distribution. Unfortunately, process data are composed by the mixture of several processes and it is hard to estimate as one certain distribution. To alternative conventional SPC, therefore, nonparametric control chart come into the picture because of the strength of nonparametric control chart, the absence of parameter estimation. SVDD based control chart is one of the nonparametric control charts having the advantage of flexible control boundary. However,basic concept of SVDD has been an oversight to the important of data characteristic, density distribution. Therefore, we proposed DW-SVDD (Density Weighted SVDD) to cover up the weakness of conventional SVDD. DW-SVDD makes a new attempt to consider dense of data as introducing the notion of density Weight. We extend as control chart using new proposed SVDD and a simulation study of various distributional data is conducted to demonstrate the improvement of performance.
Abstract: This paper describes a system, in which various methods of text summarizing can be adapted to Polish. A structure of the system is presented. A modular construction of the system and access to the system via the Internet are signaled.
Abstract: The changing economic climate has made global
manufacturing a growing reality over the last decade, forcing
companies from east and west and all over the world to
collaborate beyond geographic boundaries in the design,
manufacture and assemble of products. The ISO10303 and
ISO14649 Standards (STEP and STEP-NC) have been
developed to introduce interoperability into manufacturing
enterprises so as to meet the challenge of responding to
production on demand. This paper describes and illustrates a
STEP compliant CAD/CAPP/CAM System for the manufacture
of rotational parts on CNC turning centers. The information
models to support the proposed system together with the data
models defined in the ISO14649 standard used to create the NC
programs are also described. A structured view of a STEP
compliant CAD/CAPP/CAM system framework supporting the
next generation of intelligent CNC controllers for turn/mill
component manufacture is provided. Finally a proposed
computational environment for a STEP-NC compliant system
for turning operations (SCSTO) is described. SCSTO is the
experimental part of the research supported by the specification
of information models and constructed using a structured
methodology and object-oriented methods. SCSTO was
developed to generate a Part 21 file based on machining
features to support the interactive generation of process plans
utilizing feature extraction. A case study component has been
developed to prove the concept for using the milling and turning
parts of ISO14649 to provide a turn-mill CAD/CAPP/CAM
environment.
Abstract: This paper presents an iterative algorithm to find a
inverse kinematic solution of 5-DOF robot. The algorithm is to
minimize the iteration number. Since the 5-DOF robot cannot give full
orientation of tool. Only z-direction of tool is satisfied while rotation
of tool is determined by kinematic constraint. This work therefore
described how to specify the tool direction and let the tool rotation free.
The simulation results show that this algorithm effectively worked.
Using the proposed iteration algorithm, error due to inverse kinematics
converged to zero rapidly in 5 iterations. This algorithm was applied in
real welding robot and verified through various practical works.
Abstract: This paper presents the development of a hybrid
thermal model for the EVO Electric AFM 140 Axial Flux Permanent
Magnet (AFPM) machine as used in hybrid and electric vehicles. The
adopted approach is based on a hybrid lumped parameter and finite
difference method. The proposed method divides each motor
component into regular elements which are connected together in a
thermal resistance network representing all the physical connections
in all three dimensions. The element shape and size are chosen
according to the component geometry to ensure consistency. The
fluid domain is lumped into one region with averaged heat transfer
parameters connecting it to the solid domain. Some model parameters
are obtained from Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation and
empirical data. The hybrid thermal model is described by a set of
coupled linear first order differential equations which is discretised
and solved iteratively to obtain the temperature profile. The
computation involved is low and thus the model is suitable for
transient temperature predictions. The maximum error in temperature
prediction is 3.4% and the mean error is consistently lower than the
mean error due to uncertainty in measurements. The details of the
model development, temperature predictions and suggestions for
design improvements are presented in this paper.
Abstract: This paper examines the role of telecommunications in sustainable development of urban, rural and remote communities in the Northern Territory of Australia through the theoretical lens of Social Capital. Social Capital is a relatively new construct and is rapidly gaining interest among policy makers, politicians and researchers as a means to both describe and understand social and economic development. Increasingly, the concept of Social Capital, as opposed to the traditional economic indicators, is seen as a more accurate measure of well-being. Whilst the essence of Social Capital is quality social relations, the concept intersects with telecommunications and Information Communications Technology (ICT) in a number of ways. The potential of ICT to disseminate information quickly, to reach vast numbers of people simultaneously and to include the previously excluded, is immense. However, the exact nature of the relationship is not clearly defined. This paper examines the nexus between social relations of mutual benefit, telecommunications access and sustainable development. A mixed methodological approach was used to test the hypothesis that No relationship exists between Social Capital and access to telecommunications services and facilities. Four communities, which included two urban, a rural and a remote Indigenous community in the Northern Territory of Australia are the focus of this research paper.
