Abstract: Segmentation is an important step in medical image
analysis and classification for radiological evaluation or computer
aided diagnosis. The CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis ) of lung CT
generally first segment the area of interest (lung) and then analyze
the separately obtained area for nodule detection in order to
diagnosis the disease. For normal lung, segmentation can be
performed by making use of excellent contrast between air and
surrounding tissues. However this approach fails when lung is
affected by high density pathology. Dense pathologies are present in
approximately a fifth of clinical scans, and for computer analysis
such as detection and quantification of abnormal areas it is vital that
the entire and perfectly lung part of the image is provided and no
part, as present in the original image be eradicated. In this paper we
have proposed a lung segmentation technique which accurately
segment the lung parenchyma from lung CT Scan images. The
algorithm was tested against the 25 datasets of different patients
received from Ackron Univeristy, USA and AGA Khan Medical
University, Karachi, Pakistan.
Abstract: F-actin fibrils are the cytoskeleton of osteocytes. They react in a dynamic manner to mechanical loading, and strength and
reposition their efforts to reinforce the cells structure. We hypothesize that f-actin is temporarly disrupted after loading and repolymerizes
in a new orientation to oppose the applied load. In vitro studies are conducted to determine f-actin disruption after varying mechanical stimulus parameters that are known to affect bone
formation. Results indicate that the f-actin cytoskeleton is disrupted in vitro as a function of applied mechanical stimulus parameters and
that the f-actin bundles reassemble after loading induced disruption
within 3 minutes after cessation of loading. The disruption of the factin
cytoskeleton depends on the magnitude of stretch, the numbers
of loading cycles, frequency, the insertion of rest between loading
cycles and extracellular calcium. In vivo studies also demonstrate
disruption of the f-actin cytoskeleton in cells embedded in the bone
matrix immediately after mechanical loading. These studies suggest
that adaptation of the f-actin fiber bundles of the cytoskeleton in
response to applied loads occurs by disruption and subsequent repolymerization.
Abstract: Engineered nanoparticles’ usage rapidly increased in
various applications in the last decade due to their unusual properties.
However, there is an ever increasing concern to understand their
toxicological effect in human health. Particularly, metal and metal
oxide nanoparticles have been used in various sectors including
biomedical, food and agriculture. But their impact on human health is
yet to be fully understood. In this present investigation, we assessed
the toxic effect of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) including Ag,
MgO and Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on human mesenchymal stem
cells (hMSC) adopting cell viability and cellular morphological
changes as tools The results suggested that silver NPs are more toxic
than MgO and Co3O4NPs. The ENPs induced cytotoxicity and
nuclear morphological changes in hMSC depending on dose. The cell
viability decreases with increase in concentration of ENPs. The
cellular morphology studies revealed that ENPs damaged the cells.
These preliminary findings have implications for the use of these
nanoparticles in food industry with systematic regulations.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new algebraic scheme to design a PID controller for higher order linear time invariant continuous systems. Modified PSO (MPSO) based model order formulation techniques have applied to obtain the effective formulated second order system. A controller is tuned to meet the desired performance specification by using pole-zero cancellation method. Proposed PID controller is attached with both higher order system and formulated second order system. The closed loop response is observed for stabilization process and compared with general PSO based formulated second order system. The proposed method is illustrated through numerical example from literature.
Abstract: Because of architectural condition and structure application, sometimes mass source and stiffness source are not coincidence, and the structure is irregular. The structure is also might be asymmetric as an asymmetric bracing in plan which leads to unbalance distribution of stiffness or because of unbalance distribution of the mass. Both condition lead to eccentricity and torsion in the structure. The deficiency of ordinary code to evaluate the performance of steel structures against earthquake has been caused designing based on performance level or capacity spectrum be used. By using the mentioned methods it is possible to design a structure that its behavior against different earthquakes be predictive. In this article 5- story buildings with different percentage of asymmetric which is because of stiffness changes have been designed. The static and dynamic nonlinear analysis under three acceleration recording has been done. Finally performance level of the structure has been evaluated.
Abstract: Analytical seismic response of multi-story building
supported on base isolation system is investigated under real
earthquake motion. The superstructure is idealized as a shear type
flexible building with lateral degree-of-freedom at each floor. The
force-deformation behaviour of the isolation system is modelled by
the bi-linear behaviour which can be effectively used to model all
isolation systems in practice. The governing equations of motion of
the isolated structural system are derived. The response of the system
is obtained numerically by step-by-method under three real recorded
earthquake motions and pulse motions associated in the near-fault
earthquake motion. The variation of the top floor acceleration, interstory
drift, base shear and bearing displacement of the isolated
building is studied under different initial stiffness of the bi-linear
isolation system. It was observed that the high initial stiffness of the
isolation system excites higher modes in base-isolated structure and
generate floor accelerations and story drift. Such behaviour of the
base-isolated building especially supported on sliding type of
isolation systems can be detrimental to sensitive equipment installed
in the building. On the other hand, the bearing displacement and base
shear found to reduce marginally with the increase of the initial
stiffness of the initial stiffness of the isolation system. Further, the
above behaviour of the base-isolated building was observed for
different parameters of the bearing (i.e. post-yield stiffness and
characteristic strength) and earthquake motions (i.e. real time history
as well as pulse type motion).
Abstract: Vehicle which are turning or maneuvering at high speeds
are susceptible to sliding and subsequently deviate from desired path. In
this paper the dynamics governing the Yaw/Roll behavior of a vehicle
has been simulated. Two different simulations have been used one for
the real vehicle, for which a fuzzy controller is designed to increase its
directional stability property. The other simulation is for a hypothetical
vehicle with much higher tire cornering stiffness which is capable of
developing the required lateral forces at the tire-ground patch contact to
attain the desired lateral acceleration for the vehicle to follow the
desired path without slippage. This simulation model is our reference
model.
The logic for keeping the vehicle on the desired track in the cornering
or maneuvering state is to have some braking forces on the inner or
outer tires based on the direction of vehicle deviation from the desired
path. The inputs to our vehicle simulation model is steer angle δ and
vehicle velocity V , and the outputs can be any kinematical parameters
like yaw rate, yaw acceleration, side slip angle, rate of side slip angle
and so on. The proposed fuzzy controller is a feed forward controller.
This controller has two inputs which are steer angle δ and vehicle
velocity V, and the output of the controller is the correcting moment M,
which guides the vehicle back to the desired track. To develop the
membership functions for the controller inputs and output and the fuzzy
rules, the vehicle simulation has been run for 1000 times and the
correcting moment have been determined by trial and error. Results of
the vehicle simulation with fuzzy controller are very promising
and show the vehicle performance is enhanced greatly over the
vehicle without the controller. In fact the vehicle performance
with the controller is very near the performance of the reference
ideal model.
Abstract: In areas of low to moderate seismicity many building contents and equipment are not positively fixed to the floor or tied to adjacent walls. Under seismic induced horizontal vibration, such contents and equipment can suffer from damage by either overturning or impact associated with rocking. This paper focuses on the estimation of shock on typical contents and equipment due to rocking. A simplified analytical model is outlined that can be used to estimate the maximum acceleration on a rocking object given its basic geometric and mechanical properties. The developed model was validated against experimental results. The experimental results revealed that the maximum shock acceleration can be underestimated if the static stiffness of the materials at the interface between the rocking object and floor is used rather than the dynamic stiffness. Excellent agreement between the model and experimental results was found when the dynamic stiffness for the interface material was used, which was found to be generally much higher than corresponding static stiffness under different investigated boundary conditions of the cushion. The proposed model can be a beneficial tool in performing a rapid assessment of shock sensitive components considered for possible seismic rectification.
Abstract: The link between coordinate transformations in the plane and their effects on the graph of a function can be difficult for students studying college level mathematics to comprehend. To solidify this conceptual link in the mind of a student Microsoft Excel can serve as a convenient graphing tool and pedagogical aid. The authors of this paper describe how various transformations and their related functional symmetry properties can be graphically displayed with an Excel spreadsheet.
Abstract: In this paper, low end Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)
are applied to accelerate integer neural networks. The use of DSPs
to accelerate neural networks has been a topic of study for some
time, and has demonstrated significant performance improvements.
Recently, work has been done on integer only neural networks, which
greatly reduces hardware requirements, and thus allows for cheaper
hardware implementation. DSPs with Arithmetic Logic Units (ALUs)
that support floating or fixed point arithmetic are generally more
expensive than their integer only counterparts due to increased circuit
complexity. However if the need for floating or fixed point math
operation can be removed, then simpler, lower cost DSPs can be
used. To achieve this, an integer only neural network is created in
this paper, which is then accelerated by using DSP instructions to
improve performance.
Abstract: An aqueous methanol sensor for use in direct
methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) applications is demonstrated; the
methanol sensor is built using dispersed single-walled carbon
nanotubes (SWCNTs) with Nafion117 solution to detect the methanol
concentration in water. The study is aimed at the potential use of the
carbon nanotubes array as a methanol sensor for direct methanol fuel
cells (DMFCs). The concentration of methanol in the fuel circulation
loop of a DMFC system is an important operating parameter, because
it determines the electrical performance and efficiency of the fuel cell
system. The sensor is also operative even at ambient temperatures
and responds quickly to changes in the concentration levels of the
methanol. Such a sensor can be easily incorporated into the methanol
fuel solution flow loop in the DMFC system.
Abstract: Simultaneous recovery of copper and DCA from
simulated MEUF concentrated stream was investigated. Effects of
surfactant (DCA) and metal (copper) concentrations, surfactant to
metal molar ratio (S/M ratio), electroplating voltage, EDTA
concentration, solution pH, and salt concentration on metal recovery
and current efficiency were studied. Electric voltage of -0.5 V was
shown to be optimum operation condition in terms of Cu recovery,
current efficiency, and surfactant recovery. Increasing Cu recovery and
current efficiency were observed with increases of Cu concentration
while keeping concentration of DCA constant. However, increasing
both Cu and DCA concentration while keeping S/M ratio constant at
2.5 showed detrimental effect on Cu recovery at DCA concentration
higher than 15 mM. Cu recovery decreases with increasing pH while
current efficiency showed an opposite trend. It is believed that
conductivity is the main cause for discrepancy of Cu recovery and
current efficiency observed at different pH. Finally, it was shown that
EDTA had adverse effect on both Cu recovery and current efficiency
while addition of NaCl salt had negative impact on current efficiency
at concentration higher than 8000 mg/L.
Abstract: This paper solves the environmental/ economic dispatch
power system problem using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic
Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and its hybrid with a Convergence Accelerator
Operator (CAO), called the NSGA-II/CAO. These multiobjective
evolutionary algorithms were applied to the standard IEEE 30-bus
six-generator test system. Several optimization runs were carried out
on different cases of problem complexity. Different quality measure
which compare the performance of the two solution techniques were
considered. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of the CAO
in the original NSGA-II improves its convergence while preserving
the diversity properties of the solution set.
Abstract: Simultaneous transient conduction and radiation heat
transfer with heat generation is investigated. Analysis is carried out
for both steady and unsteady situations. two-dimensional gray
cylindrical enclosure with an absorbing, emitting, and isotropically
scattering medium is considered. Enclosure boundaries are assumed
at specified temperatures. The heat generation rate is considered
uniform and constant throughout the medium. The lattice Boltzmann
method (LBM) was used to solve the energy equation of a transient
conduction-radiation heat transfer problem. The control volume finite
element method (CVFEM) was used to compute the radiative
information. To study the compatibility of the LBM for the energy
equation and the CVFEM for the radiative transfer equation, transient
conduction and radiation heat transfer problems in 2-D cylindrical
geometries were considered. In order to establish the suitability of the
LBM, the energy equation of the present problem was also solved
using the the finite difference method (FDM) of the computational
fluid dynamics. The CVFEM used in the radiative heat transfer was
employed to compute the radiative information required for the
solution of the energy equation using the LBM or the FDM (of the
CFD). To study the compatibility and suitability of the LBM for the
solution of energy equation and the CVFEM for the radiative
information, results were analyzed for the effects of various
parameters such as the boundary emissivity. The results of the LBMCVFEM
combination were found to be in excellent agreement with
the FDM-CVFEM combination. The number of iterations and the
steady state temperature in both of the combinations were found
comparable. Results are found for situations with and without heat
generation. Heat generation is found to have significant bearing on
temperature distribution.
Abstract: Cellular networks provide voice and data services to the users with mobility. To deliver services to the mobile users, the cellular network is capable of tracking the locations of the users, and allowing user movement during the conversations. These capabilities are achieved by the location management. Location management in mobile communication systems is concerned with those network functions necessary to allow the users to be reached wherever they are in the network coverage area. In a cellular network, a service coverage area is divided into smaller areas of hexagonal shape, referred to as cells. The cellular concept was introduced to reuse the radio frequency. Continued expansion of cellular networks, coupled with an increasingly restricted mobile spectrum, has established the reduction of communication overhead as a highly important issue. Much of this traffic is used in determining the precise location of individual users when relaying calls, with the field of location management aiming to reduce this overhead through prediction of user location. This paper describes and compares various location management schemes in the cellular networks.
Abstract: The objective of current issue was to develop a model
of testicular herpes simplex virus (HSV) type I infection for
assessment of viral effect on fertility. 56 male mice were inoculated
intraperitoneally with different concentrations of HSV on 8 day post
partum. It was revealed that the optimal dose was 100 plaque
forming units per mice as it provided testicular infection in 100% of
survivors. HSV proteins were detected both in somatic and germ
cells (spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatides). Although DNA
load in testis was descending from 3 to 28 days post infection only
12.5% of infected males had offspring after mating with uninfected
females comparing to 87.5% in control (p=0.012). These results are
the first direct evidence for HSV impact in male sterility. Prepuberal
mice appeared to be a suitable model for investigation of
pathogenesis of virus-associated fertility disorders.
Abstract: This paper mathematically analyses the varying
magnitude of production loss, which may occur due to idle time (inprocess
waiting time and traveling time) on a linear walking worker
assembly line. Within this flexible and reconfigurable assembly
system, each worker travels down the line carrying out each
assembly task at each station; and each worker accomplishes the
assembly of a unit from start to finish and then travels back to the
first station to start the assembly of a new product. This strategy of
system design attempts to combine the flexibility of the U-shaped
moving worker assembly cell with the efficiency of the conventional
fixed worker assembly line. The paper aims to evaluate the effect of
idle time that may offset the labor efficiency of each walking worker
providing an insight into the mechanism of such a flexible and
reconfigurable assembly system.
Abstract: During the past decade, pond aeration systems have
been developed which will sustain large quantities of fish and
invertebrate biomass. Dissolved Oxygen (DO) is considered to be
among the most important water quality parameters in fish culture.
Fishponds in aquaculture farms are usually located in remote areas
where grid lines are at far distance. Aeration of ponds is required to
prevent mortality and to intensify production, especially when
feeding is practical, and in warm regions. To increase pond
production it is necessary to control dissolved oxygen. Artificial
intelligence (AI) techniques are becoming useful as alternate
approaches to conventional techniques or as components of
integrated systems. They have been used to solve complicated
practical problems in various areas and are becoming more and more
popular nowadays. This paper presents a new design of diffused
aeration system using fuel cell as a power source. Also fuzzy logic
control Technique (FLC) is used for controlling the speed of air flow
rate from the blower to air piping connected to the pond by adjusting
blower speed. MATLAB SIMULINK results show high performance
of fuzzy logic control (FLC).
Abstract: The paper presents a new system for the automat
control of the aircrafts- flight in lateral plane using the cinematic
model and the dynamic inversion. Starting from the equations of the
aircrafts- lateral movement, the authors use two axes systems and
obtained a control law that cancels the lateral deviation of the flying
objects from the runway line. This system makes the aircrafts-
direction angle to follow the direction angle of the runway line.
Simulations in Matlab/Simulink have been done for different
aircraft-s initial points and direction angles. The inconvenience of
this system is the long duration of the “transient regime". That is why
this system can be used independently, but the results are not very
good; thus, it can be a part (subsystem) of other systems. The main
system that cancels the lateral deviation from the runway line is
based on dynamic inversion and uses, as subsystem, the control
system for the lateral movement using the cinematic model. Using
complex Matlab/Simulink models, the authors obtained the time
evolution of the direction angle and the time evolution of the aircraft
lateral deviation with respect to the runway line, for different values
of the initial direction angle and for different wind types. The system
has a very good behavior for all initial direction angles and wind
types.
