Abstract: Naïve Bayes classifiers are simple probabilistic
classifiers. Classification extracts patterns by using data file with a set
of labeled training examples and is currently one of the most
significant areas in data mining. However, Naïve Bayes assumes the
independence among the features. Structural learning among the
features thus helps in the classification problem. In this study, the use
of structural learning in Bayesian Network is proposed to be applied
where there are relationships between the features when using the
Naïve Bayes. The improvement in the classification using structural
learning is shown if there exist relationship between the features or
when they are not independent.
Abstract: Several studies have been carried out, using various techniques, including neural networks, to discriminate vigilance states in humans from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, but we are still far from results satisfactorily useable results. The work presented in this paper aims at improving this status with regards to 2 aspects. Firstly, we introduce an original procedure made of the association of two neural networks, a self organizing map (SOM) and a learning vector quantization (LVQ), that allows to automatically detect artefacted states and to separate the different levels of vigilance which is a major breakthrough in the field of vigilance. Lastly and more importantly, our study has been oriented toward real-worked situation and the resulting model can be easily implemented as a wearable device. It benefits from restricted computational and memory requirements and data access is very limited in time. Furthermore, some ongoing works demonstrate that this work should shortly results in the design and conception of a non invasive electronic wearable device.
Abstract: Many research works are carried out on the analysis of
traces in a digital learning environment. These studies produce large
volumes of usage tracks from the various actions performed by a
user. However, to exploit these data, compare and improve
performance, several issues are raised. To remedy this, several works
deal with this problem seen recently. This research studied a series of
questions about format and description of the data to be shared. Our
goal is to share thoughts on these issues by presenting our experience
in the analysis of trace-based log files, comparing several approaches
used in automatic classification applied to e-learning platforms.
Finally, the obtained results are discussed.
Abstract: This paper describes the evolution of strategies to
evaluate ePortfolios in an online Master-s of Education (M.Ed.)
degree in Instructional Technology. The ePortfolios are required as a
culminating activity for students in the program. By using Web 2.0
tools to develop the ePortfolios, students are able to showcase their
technical skills, integrate national standards, demonstrate their
professional understandings, and reflect on their individual learning.
Faculty have created assessment strategies to evaluate student
achievement of these skills. To further develop ePortfolios as a tool
promoting authentic learning, faculty are moving toward integrating
transparency as part of the evaluation process.
Abstract: Text document categorization involves large amount
of data or features. The high dimensionality of features is a
troublesome and can affect the performance of the classification.
Therefore, feature selection is strongly considered as one of the
crucial part in text document categorization. Selecting the best
features to represent documents can reduce the dimensionality of
feature space hence increase the performance. There were many
approaches has been implemented by various researchers to
overcome this problem. This paper proposed a novel hybrid approach
for feature selection in text document categorization based on Ant
Colony Optimization (ACO) and Information Gain (IG). We also
presented state-of-the-art algorithms by several other researchers.
Abstract: This paper presents the development of a wavelet
based algorithm, for distinguishing between magnetizing inrush
currents and power system fault currents, which is quite adequate,
reliable, fast and computationally efficient tool. The proposed
technique consists of a preprocessing unit based on discrete wavelet
transform (DWT) in combination with an artificial neural network
(ANN) for detecting and classifying fault currents. The DWT acts as
an extractor of distinctive features in the input signals at the relay
location. This information is then fed into an ANN for classifying
fault and magnetizing inrush conditions. A 220/55/55 V, 50Hz
laboratory transformer connected to a 380 V power system were
simulated using ATP-EMTP. The DWT was implemented by using
Matlab and Coiflet mother wavelet was used to analyze primary
currents and generate training data. The simulated results presented
clearly show that the proposed technique can accurately discriminate
between magnetizing inrush and fault currents in transformer
protection.
Abstract: Traditional Javanese classic dance is a valuable
inheritance in Java Indonesia. Nowadays, this treasure of culture is
no longer belonging to Javanese people only. Many art departments
from universities around the world already put this as a subject in
their curriculum. Nonetheless, dance is a practical skill. It needs to be
practices so often while accompanied by an instructor to get the right
technique. An interactive Computer Aided Instruction (iCAI) that can
interactively assist the student to practice is developed. By using this
software students can conduct a self practice in studio and get some
feedbacks from the software. This CAI is not intended to replace the
instructor, but to assist them in increasing the student fly-time in
practice.
Abstract: The purpose of the article is to illustrate the main
characteristics of the corporate governance challenge facing the
countries of South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and to subsequently
determine and assess the extensiveness and effectiveness of corporate
governance regulations in these countries. Therefore, we start with an
overview on the subject of the key problems of corporate governance
in transition. We then address the issue of corporate governance
measurement for SEE countries. To this end, we include a review of
the methodological framework for determining both the
extensiveness and the effectiveness of corporate governance
legislation. We then focus on the actual analysis of the quality of
corporate governance codes, as well as of legal institutions
effectiveness and provide a measure of corporate governance in
Romania and other SEE emerging markets. The paper concludes by
emphasizing the corporate governance enforcement gap and by
identifying research issues that require further study.
Abstract: A direct adaptive controller for a class of unknown nonlinear discrete-time systems is presented in this article. The proposed controller is constructed by fuzzy rules emulated network (FREN). With its simple structure, the human knowledge about the plant is transferred to be if-then rules for setting the network. These adjustable parameters inside FREN are tuned by the learning mechanism with time varying step size or learning rate. The variation of learning rate is introduced by main theorem to improve the system performance and stabilization. Furthermore, the boundary of adjustable parameters is guaranteed through the on-line learning and membership functions properties. The validation of the theoretical findings is represented by some illustrated examples.
Abstract: In this paper, a new learning algorithm based on a
hybrid metaheuristic integrating Differential Evolution (DE) and
Reduced Variable Neighborhood Search (RVNS) is introduced to train
the classification method PROAFTN. To apply PROAFTN, values of
several parameters need to be determined prior to classification. These
parameters include boundaries of intervals and relative weights for
each attribute. Based on these requirements, the hybrid approach,
named DEPRO-RVNS, is presented in this study. In some cases, the
major problem when applying DE to some classification problems
was the premature convergence of some individuals to local optima.
To eliminate this shortcoming and to improve the exploration and
exploitation capabilities of DE, such individuals were set to iteratively
re-explored using RVNS. Based on the generated results on
both training and testing data, it is shown that the performance of
PROAFTN is significantly improved. Furthermore, the experimental
study shows that DEPRO-RVNS outperforms well-known machine
learning classifiers in a variety of problems.
Abstract: Decision tree algorithms have very important place at
classification model of data mining. In literature, algorithms use
entropy concept or gini index to form the tree. The shape of the
classes and their closeness to each other some of the factors that
affect the performance of the algorithm. In this paper we introduce a
new decision tree algorithm which employs data (attribute) folding
method and variation of the class variables over the branches to be
created. A comparative performance analysis has been held between
the proposed algorithm and C4.5.
Abstract: In this study, a fuzzy integrated logical forecasting method (FILF) is extended for multi-variate systems by using a vector autoregressive model. Fuzzy time series forecasting (FTSF) method was recently introduced by Song and Chissom [1]-[2] after that Chen improved the FTSF method. Rather than the existing literature, the proposed model is not only compared with the previous FTS models, but also with the conventional time series methods such as the classical vector autoregressive model. The cluster optimization is based on the C-means clustering method. An empirical study is performed for the prediction of the chartering rates of a group of dry bulk cargo ships. The root mean squared error (RMSE) metric is used for the comparing of results of methods and the proposed method has superiority than both traditional FTS methods and also the classical time series methods.
Abstract: Script identification is one of the challenging steps in the development of optical character recognition system for bilingual or multilingual documents. In this paper an attempt is made for identification of English numerals at word level from Punjabi documents by using Gabor features. The support vector machine (SVM) classifier with five fold cross validation is used to classify the word images. The results obtained are quite encouraging. Average accuracy with RBF kernel, Polynomial and Linear Kernel functions comes out to be greater than 99%.
Abstract: Image compression plays a vital role in today-s
communication. The limitation in allocated bandwidth leads to
slower communication. To exchange the rate of transmission in the
limited bandwidth the Image data must be compressed before
transmission. Basically there are two types of compressions, 1)
LOSSY compression and 2) LOSSLESS compression. Lossy
compression though gives more compression compared to lossless
compression; the accuracy in retrievation is less in case of lossy
compression as compared to lossless compression. JPEG, JPEG2000
image compression system follows huffman coding for image
compression. JPEG 2000 coding system use wavelet transform,
which decompose the image into different levels, where the
coefficient in each sub band are uncorrelated from coefficient of
other sub bands. Embedded Zero tree wavelet (EZW) coding exploits
the multi-resolution properties of the wavelet transform to give a
computationally simple algorithm with better performance compared
to existing wavelet transforms. For further improvement of
compression applications other coding methods were recently been
suggested. An ANN base approach is one such method. Artificial
Neural Network has been applied to many problems in image
processing and has demonstrated their superiority over classical
methods when dealing with noisy or incomplete data for image
compression applications. The performance analysis of different
images is proposed with an analysis of EZW coding system with
Error Backpropagation algorithm. The implementation and analysis
shows approximately 30% more accuracy in retrieved image
compare to the existing EZW coding system.
Abstract: The method of gait identification based on the nearest neighbor classification technique with motion similarity assessment by the dynamic time warping is proposed. The model based kinematic motion data, represented by the joints rotations coded by Euler angles and unit quaternions is used. The different pose distance functions in Euler angles and quaternion spaces are considered. To evaluate individual features of the subsequent joints movements during gait cycle, joint selection is carried out. To examine proposed approach database containing 353 gaits of 25 humans collected in motion capture laboratory is used. The obtained results are promising. The classifications, which takes into consideration all joints has accuracy over 91%. Only analysis of movements of hip joints allows to correctly identify gaits with almost 80% precision.
Abstract: The performance of high-resolution schemes is investigated for unsteady, inviscid and compressible multiphase flows. An Eulerian diffuse interface approach has been chosen for the simulation of multicomponent flow problems. The reduced fiveequation and seven equation models are used with HLL and HLLC approximation. The authors demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of both seven equations and five equations models studying their performance with HLL and HLLC algorithms on simple test case. The seven equation model is based on two pressure, two velocity concept of Baer–Nunziato [10], while five equation model is based on the mixture velocity and pressure. The numerical evaluations of two variants of Riemann solvers have been conducted for the classical one-dimensional air-water shock tube and compared with analytical solution for error analysis.
Abstract: Determining depth of anesthesia is a challenging problem
in the context of biomedical signal processing. Various methods
have been suggested to determine a quantitative index as depth of
anesthesia, but most of these methods suffer from high sensitivity
during the surgery. A novel method based on energy scattering of
samples in the wavelet domain is suggested to represent the basic
content of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. In this method, first
EEG signal is decomposed into different sub-bands, then samples
are squared and energy of samples sequence is constructed through
each scale and time, which is normalized and finally entropy of the
resulted sequences is suggested as a reliable index. Empirical Results
showed that applying the proposed method to the EEG signals can
classify the awake, moderate and deep anesthesia states similar to
BIS.
Abstract: In the paper we discuss the influence of the route
flexibility degree, the open rate of operations and the production type
coefficient on makespan. The flexible job-open shop scheduling
problem FJOSP (an extension of the classical job shop scheduling) is
analyzed. For the analysis of the production process we used a
hybrid heuristic of the GRASP (greedy randomized adaptive search
procedure) with simulated annealing algorithm. Experiments with
different levels of factors have been considered and compared. The
GRASP+SA algorithm has been tested and illustrated with results for
the serial route and the parallel one.
Abstract: The angular distribution of Compton scattering of two
quanta originating in the annihilation of a positron with an electron
is investigated as a quantum key distribution (QKD) mechanism in
the gamma spectral range. The geometry of coincident Compton
scattering is observed on the two sides as a way to obtain partially
correlated readings on the quantum channel. We derive the noise
probability density function of a conceptually equivalent prepare
and measure quantum channel in order to evaluate the limits of the
concept in terms of the device secrecy capacity and estimate it at
roughly 1.9 bits per 1 000 annihilation events. The high error rate
is well above the tolerable error rates of the common reconciliation
protocols; therefore, the proposed key agreement protocol by public
discussion requires key reconciliation using classical error-correcting
codes. We constructed a prototype device based on the readily
available monolithic detectors in the least complex setup.
