Abstract: This paper presents results of an experimental study performed to investigate effect of incorporating silica fume on physico-mechanical properties and durability of resulting fly ash geopolymers. Geopolymer specimens were prepared by activating fly ash incorporated with additional silica fume in the range of 2.5% to 5%, with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution having Na2O content of 8%. For studying durability, 10% magnesium sulphate solution was used to immerse the specimens up to a period of 15 weeks during which visual observation, weight changes and strength changes were monitored regularly. Addition of silica fume lowers performance of geopolymer pastes. However, in mortars, addition of silica fume significantly enhanced physico-mechanical properties and durability.
Abstract: There is widespread emphasis on reform in the teaching of introductory statistics at the college level. Underpinning this reform is a consensus among educators and practitioners that traditional curricular materials and pedagogical strategies have not been effective in promoting statistical literacy, a competency that is becoming increasingly necessary for effective decision-making and evidence-based practice. This paper explains the historical context of, and rationale for reform-oriented teaching of introductory statistics (at the college level) in the health, social and behavioral sciences (evidence-based disciplines). A firm understanding and appreciation of the basis for change in pedagogical approach is important, in order to facilitate commitment to reform, consensus building on appropriate strategies, and adoption and maintenance of best practices. In essence, reform-oriented pedagogy, in this context, is a function of the interaction among content, pedagogy, technology, and assessment. The challenge is to create an appropriate balance among these domains.
Abstract: Ontologies play an important role in semantic web
applications and are often developed by different groups and
continues to evolve over time. The knowledge in ontologies changes
very rapidly that make the applications outdated if they continue to
use old versions or unstable if they jump to new versions. Temporal
frames using frame versioning and slot versioning are used to take
care of dynamic nature of the ontologies. The paper proposes new
tags and restructured OWL format enabling the applications to work
with the old or new version of ontologies. Gene Ontology, a very
dynamic ontology, has been used as a case study to explain the OWL
Ontology with Temporal Tags.
Abstract: The orthogonal processes to shape the triangle steel plate into a equilateral vertical steel are examined by an incremental elasto-plastic finite-element method based on an updated Lagrangian formulation. The highly non-linear problems due to the geometric changes, the inelastic constitutive behavior and the boundary conditions varied with deformation are taken into account in an incremental manner. On the contact boundary, a modified Coulomb friction mode is specially considered. A weighting factor r-minimum is employed to limit the step size of loading increment to linear relation. In particular, selective reduced integration was adopted to formulate the stiffness matrix. The simulated geometries of verticality could clearly demonstrate the vertical processes until unloading. A series of experiments and simulations were performed to validate the formulation in the theory, leading to the development of the computer codes. The whole deformation history and the distribution of stress, strain and thickness during the forming process were obtained by carefully considering the moving boundary condition in the finite-element method. Therefore, this modeling can be used for judging whether a equilateral vertical steel can be shaped successfully. The present work may be expected to improve the understanding of the formation of the equilateral vertical steel.
Abstract: Design of experiments made for correlated the hormonal activity of steroids and their effect on the vaginal structure properties. Vaginal wall consists of distinct layers of cells which strongly differ regarding growth in answer to steroid hormones. The presence study carried out for functional evaluation and sustained replacement effect of the reproductive hormones on the vaginal morphometry in the rabbit. Rabbits were maintained control (Co) or ovariectomized (Ovz) and continuously treated with estradiol (Ovz E) and estradiol mixture with testosterone (Ovz ET). Relative to control rabbits with the distinct tissue distribution pattern, ovariectomized animals displayed declined epithelial thickness and atrophy of the muscularis layer that cause the vaginal wall thinning. Estradiol treatment of Orz rabbits inverted these changes to status of the preovariectomy. Histometric measurements in Ovz ET group completely including of thickness of the epithelial and muscular layers was greater in comparison to that of control animals.

Abstract: The activities of alkaline phosphatase and Ca2+ATPase in mud crab (Scylla serrata) collected from a soft-shell crab farm in Chantaburi Province, Thailand, in several stages of molting cycle were observed. The results showed that the activity of alkaline phosphatase in gill after molting was highly significant (p
Abstract: Enzymatic hydrolysis is one of the major steps involved in the conversion from sugarcane bagasse to yield ethanol. This process offers potential for yields and selectivity higher, lower energy costs and milder operating conditions than chemical processes. However, the presence of some factors such as lignin content, crystallinity degree of the cellulose, and particle sizes, limits the digestibility of the cellulose present in the lignocellulosic biomasses. Pretreatment aims to improve the access of the enzyme to the substrate. In this study sugarcane bagasse was submitted chemical pretreatment that consisted of two consecutive steps, the first with dilute sulfuric acid (1 % (v/v) H2SO4), and the second with alkaline solutions with different concentrations of NaOH (1, 2, 3 and 4 % (w/v)). Thermal Analysis (TG/ DTG and DTA) was used to evaluate hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin contents in the samples. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the morphological structures of the in natura and chemically treated samples. Results showed that pretreatments were effective in chemical degradation of lignocellulosic materials of the samples, and also was possible to observe the morphological changes occurring in the biomasses after pretreatments.
Abstract: A Space Vector based Pulse Width Modulation
control technique for the three-phase PWM converter is proposed in
this paper. The proposed control scheme is based on a synchronous
reference frame model. High performance and efficiency is obtained
with regards to the DC bus voltage and the power factor
considerations of the PWM rectifier thus leading to low losses.
MATLAB/SIMULINK are used as a platform for the simulations and
a SIMULINK model is presented in the paper. The results show that
the proposed model demonstrates better performance and properties
compared to the traditional SPWM method and the method improves
the dynamic performance of the closed loop drastically.
For the Space Vector based Pulse Width Modulation, Sine signal
is the reference waveform and triangle waveform is the carrier
waveform. When the value sine signal is large than triangle signal,
the pulse will start produce to high. And then when the triangular
signals higher than sine signal, the pulse will come to low. SPWM
output will changed by changing the value of the modulation index
and frequency used in this system to produce more pulse width. The
more pulse width produced, the output voltage will have lower
harmonics contents and the resolution increase.
Abstract: Decentralized Tuple Space (DTS) implements tuple
space model among a series of decentralized hosts and provides the
logical global shared tuple repository. Replication has been introduced
to promote performance problem incurred by remote tuple access. In
this paper, we propose a replication approach of DTS allowing
replication policies self-adapting. The accesses from users or other
nodes are monitored and collected to contribute the decision making.
The replication policy may be changed if the better performance is
expected. The experiments show that this approach suitably adjusts the
replication policies, which brings negligible overhead.
Abstract: Vortices can develop in intakes of turbojet and turbo
fan aero engines during high power operation in the vicinity of solid
surfaces. These vortices can cause catastrophic damage to the engine.
The factors determining the formation of the vortex include both
geometric dimensions as well as flow parameters. It was shown that
the threshold at which the vortex forms or disappears is also
dependent on the initial flow condition (i.e. whether a vortex forms
after stabilised non vortex flow or vice-versa). A computational fluid
dynamics study was conducted to determine the difference in
thresholds between the two conditions. This is the first reported
numerical investigation of the “memory effect". The numerical
results reproduce the phenomenon reported in previous experimental
studies and additional factors, which had not been previously studied,
were investigated. They are the rate at which ambient velocity
changes and the initial value of ambient velocity. The former was
found to cause a shift in the threshold but not the later. It was also
found that the varying condition thresholds are not symmetrical about
the neutral threshold. The vortex to no vortex threshold lie slightly
further away from the neutral threshold compared to the no vortex to
vortex threshold. The results suggests that experimental investigation
of vortex formation threshold performed either in vortex to no vortex
conditions, or vice versa, solely may introduce mis-predictions
greater than 10%.
Abstract: L-asparaginase was extracted from pathogenic
Escherichia coli which was isolated from urinary tract infection
patients. L-asparaginase was purified 96-fold by ultrafiltration, ion
exchange and gel filtration giving 39.19% yield with final specific
activity of 178.57 IU/mg. L-asparaginase showed 138,356±1,000
Dalton molecular weight with 31024±100 Dalton molecular mass.
Kinetic properties of enzyme resulting 1.25×10-5 mM Km and
2.5×10-3 M/min Vmax. L-asparaginase showed a maximum activity
at pH 7.5 when incubated at 37 ºC for 30 min and illustrated its full
activity (100%) after 15 min incubation at 20-37 ºC, while 70% of its
activity was lost when incubated at 60 ºC. L-asparaginase showed
cytotoxicity to U937 cell line with IC50 0.5±0.19 IU/ml, and
selectivity index (SI=7.6) about 8 time higher selectivity over the
lymphocyte cells. Therefore, the local pathogenic E. coli strains may
be used as a source of high yield of L-asparaginase to produce anti
cancer agent with high selectivity.
Abstract: By the end of XX century in the structure of humanity some changes have been provoked: a new ethnos - Ethnos of Intellect is formed and is still being formed, beside the historical types of ethnoses: open ethnos, closed ethnos, wandering ethnos, dead ethnos, - and this event was caused by the technical progress, development of informational and transport communications, especially - by creation of Internet. The Ethnos of Intellect is something very close to the ÔÇ×Information Society“ described by J. Ellule and Y. Masuda that was regarded as the culture of XXI century, being an antithesis for technical and technicistical civilizations, but it-s necessary to indicate also the essential difference between these concepts: the Ethnos of Intellect is the antithesis of Socium. The existence of such an ethnos within human society that has already become an Information Society itself is extremely important in observing legally and informatically a new kind of reins in the hands of the political power, revealing every attempt to violate the human rights of simple citizens. A concrete example of some conjunction points of legal informatics and informatical law in a certain kind of ambiental studies of the project ''State Registre of Population'' in Russia is very eloquent.
Abstract: Information systems practitioners are frequently
required to master new technology, often without the aid of formal
training. They require the skill to manage their own learning and,
when this skill is developed in their formal training, their adaptability
to new technology may be improved. Self- directed learning is the
ability of the learner to manage his or her own learning experience
with some guidance from a facilitator. Self-directed learning skills
are best improved when practiced. This paper reflects on a critical
social research project to improve the self-directed learning skills of
fourth year Information Systems students. Critical social research
differs from other research paradigms in that the researcher is viewed
as the agent of change to achieve the desired outcome in the problem
situation.
Abstract: Mostly transforms are used for speech data
compressions which are lossy algorithms. Such algorithms are
tolerable for speech data compression since the loss in quality is not
perceived by the human ear. However the vector quantization (VQ)
has a potential to give more data compression maintaining the same
quality. In this paper we propose speech data compression algorithm
using vector quantization technique. We have used VQ algorithms
LBG, KPE and FCG. The results table shows computational
complexity of these three algorithms. Here we have introduced a new
performance parameter Average Fractional Change in Speech
Sample (AFCSS). Our FCG algorithm gives far better performance
considering mean absolute error, AFCSS and complexity as
compared to others.
Abstract: The move from cash accounting to accrual accounting, or rule-based to principle-based accounting, by many governments is part of an ongoing efforts in promoting a more business-like and performance-focused public sector. Using questionnaire responses from preparers of financial statements of public universities in Malaysia, this study examines the implementation challenges and benefits of principle-based accounting. Results from these responses suggest that most respondents perceived significant costs would be incurred in relation to staff training and recruitment of staffs with relevant technical knowledge. In addition, most respondents also perceived that there will be significant changes in the current accounting system and structure in order to comply with the principle-based accounting requirements. However, most respondents perceived that these changes might not result in significant benefits for management purposes, for example, financial management, budgeting and allocation of resources. Nevertheless, most respondents perceived that principle-based accounting information would facilitate the monitoring function of the board. The general perception is that adoption of principle-based accounting information is not significantly useful than rule-based accounting information is expected to change over time as preparers of the financial statements gradually understand and appreciate the benefits of principle-based accounting information. This infers that the perceived usefulness of different accounting system is a function of familiarity by the preparers.
Abstract: This paper discusses the implementation of a fuzzy logic based coordinated voltage control for a distribution system connected with distributed generations (DGs). The connection of DGs has created a challenge for the distribution network operators to keep the voltage in the system within its acceptable limits. Intelligent centralized or coordinated voltage control schemes have proven to be more reliable due to its ability to provide more control and coordination with the communication with other network devices. In this work, voltage control using fuzzy logic by coordinating three methods of control, power factor control, on load tap changer and generation curtailment is implemented on a distribution network test system. The results show that the fuzzy logic based coordination is able to keep the voltage within its allowable limits.
Abstract: This study aims to discuss the effect of illumination and the color temperature of the lighting source under the office lighting environment on human psychological and physiological responses. In this study, 21 healthy participants were selected, and the Ryodoraku measurement system was utilized to measure their skin resistance change. The findings indicated that the effect of the color temperature of the lighting source on human physiological responses is significant within 90 min after turning the lights on; while after 90 min the effect of illumination on human physiological responses is higher than that of the color temperature. Moreover, the cardiovascular, digestive and endocrine systems are prone to be affected by the indoor lighting environment. During the long-term exposure to high intensity of illumination and high color temperature (2000Lux -6500K), the effect on the psychological responses turned moderate after the human visual system adopted to the lighting environment. However, the effect of the Ryodoraku value on human physiological responses was more significant with the increase of perceptive time. The effect of long time exposure to a lighting environment on the physiological responses is greater than its effect on the psychological responses. This conclusion is different from the traditional public viewpoint that the effect on the psychological responses is greater.
Abstract: Probiotic bacteria especially Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium exert suppressive effect on Helicobacter pylori. Cinnamon and licorice have been traditionally used for the treatment of gastric ulcer. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of herbs on yogurt fermentation, the level of probiotic bacteria in yogurt during 28 days storage and the effect of herbal yogurt on the growth of H. pylori in vitro. Cinnamon or licorice was mixed with milk and the mixture was fermented with probiotic bacteria to form herbal-yogurt. Changes of pH and total titratable acids were monitored and the viability of probiotic bacteria was evaluated during and after refrigerated storage. The in vitro inhibition of H. pylori growth was determined using agar diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The presence of herbs did not affect the probiotic population during storage. There were no significant differences in pH and TTA between herbal-yogurts and plain-yogurt during fermentation and storage. Water extract of cinnamon-yogurt showed the highest inhibition effect (13.5mm) on H. pylori growth in comparison with licorice-yogurt (11.2mm). The present findings indicate cinnamon and licorice has bioactive components to decrease the growth of H. pylori.
Abstract: To achieve competitive advantage nowadays, most of
the industrial companies are considering that success is sustained to
great product development. That is to manage the product throughout
its entire lifetime ranging from design, manufacture, operation and
destruction. Achieving this goal requires a tight collaboration
between partners from a wide variety of domains, resulting in various
product data types and formats, as well as different software tools. So
far, the lack of a meaningful unified representation for product data
semantics has slowed down efficient product development. This
paper proposes an ontology based approach to enable such semantic
interoperability. Generic and extendible product ontology is
described, gathering main concepts pertaining to the mechanical field
and the relations that hold among them. The ontology is not
exhaustive; nevertheless, it shows that such a unified representation
is possible and easily exploitable. This is illustrated thru a case study
with an example product and some semantic requests to which the
ontology responds quite easily. The study proves the efficiency of
ontologies as a support to product data exchange and information
sharing, especially in product development environments where
collaboration is not just a choice but a mandatory prerequisite.
