Abstract: The digital control system of mobile robots (MR) control is considered. It is shown that sequential interpretation of control algorithm operators, unfolding in physical time, suggests the occurrence of time delays between inputting data from sensors and outputting data to actuators. Another destabilizing control factor is presence of backlash in the joints of an actuator with an executive unit. Complex model of control system, which takes into account the dynamics of the MR, the dynamics of the digital controller and backlash in actuators, is worked out. The digital controller model is divided into two parts: the first part describes the control law embedded in the controller in the form of a control program that realizes a polling procedure when organizing transactions to sensors and actuators. The second part of the model describes the time delays that occur in the Von Neumann-type controller when processing data. To estimate time intervals, the algorithm is represented in the form of an ergodic semi-Markov process. For an ergodic semi-Markov process of common form, a method is proposed for estimation a wandering time from one arbitrary state to another arbitrary state. Example shows how the backlash and time delays affect the quality characteristics of the MR control system functioning.
Abstract: The mobile robot ability to navigate autonomously in its environment is very important. Even though the advances in technology, robot self-localization and goal directed navigation in complex environments are still challenging tasks. In this article, we propose a novel method for robot navigation based on rat’s brain signals (Local Field Potentials). It has been well known that rats accurately and rapidly navigate in a complex space by localizing themselves in reference to the surrounding environmental cues. As the first step to incorporate the rat’s navigation strategy into the robot control, we analyzed the rats’ strategies while it navigates in a multiple Y-maze, and recorded Local Field Potentials (LFPs) simultaneously from three brain regions. Next, we processed the LFPs, and the extracted features were used as an input in the artificial neural network to predict the rat’s next location, especially in the decision-making moment, in Y-junctions. We developed an algorithm by which the robot learned to imitate the rat’s decision-making by mapping the rat’s brain signals into its own actions. Finally, the robot learned to integrate the internal states as well as external sensors in order to localize and navigate in the complex environment.
Abstract: Industrial robots as part of highly automated manufacturing are recently developed to cooperative (light-weight) robots. This offers the opportunity of using them as assistance robots and to improve the participation in professional life of disabled or handicapped people such as tetraplegics. Robots under development are located within a cooperation area together with the working person at the same workplace. This cooperation area is an area where the robot and the working person can perform tasks at the same time. Thus, working people and robots are operating in the immediate proximity. Considering the physical restrictions and the limited mobility of tetraplegics, a hands-free robot control could be an appropriate approach for a cooperative assistance robot. To meet these requirements, the research project MeRoSy (human-robot synergy) develops methods for cooperative assistance robots based on the measurement of head movements of the working person. One research objective is to improve the participation in professional life of people with disabilities and, in particular, mobility impaired persons (e.g. wheelchair users or tetraplegics), whose participation in a self-determined working life is denied. This raises the research question, how a human-robot cooperation workplace can be designed for hands-free robot control. Here, the example of a library scenario is demonstrated. In this paper, an empirical study that focuses on the impact of head movement related stress is presented. 12 test subjects with tetraplegia participated in the study. Tetraplegia also known as quadriplegia is the worst type of spinal cord injury. In the experiment, three various basic head movements were examined. Data of the head posture were collected by a motion capture system; muscle activity was measured via surface electromyography and the subjective mental stress was assessed via a mental effort questionnaire. The muscle activity was measured for the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), the upper trapezius (UT) or trapezius pars descendens, and the splenius capitis (SPL) muscle. For this purpose, six non-invasive surface electromyography sensors were mounted on the head and neck area. An analysis of variance shows differentiated muscular strains depending on the type of head movement. Systematically investigating the influence of different basic head movements on the resulting strain is an important issue to relate the research results to other scenarios. At the end of this paper, a conclusion will be drawn and an outlook of future work will be presented.
Abstract: The paper describes the use of subspace based
identification methods for auto tuning of a state space control system.
The plant is an unstable but self balancing transport robot. Because
of the unstable character of the process it has to be identified
from closed loop input-output data. Based on the identified model
a state space controller combined with an observer is calculated. The
subspace identification algorithm and the controller design procedure
is combined to a auto tuning method. The capability of the approach
was verified in a simulation experiments under different process
conditions.
Abstract: In this work, we present a Bayesian non-parametric
approach to model the motion control of ATVs. The motion control
model is based on a Dirichlet Process-Gaussian Process (DP-GP)
mixture model. The DP-GP mixture model provides a flexible
representation of patterns of control manoeuvres along trajectories
of different lengths and discretizations. The model also estimates the
number of patterns, sufficient for modeling the dynamics of the ATV.
Abstract: This paper addresses the control problem of a class of hyper-redundant arms. In order to avoid discrepancy between the mathematical model and the actual dynamics, the dynamic model with uncertain parameters of this class of manipulators is inferred. A procedure to design a feedback controller which stabilizes the uncertain system has been proposed. A PD boundary control algorithm is used in order to control the desired position of the manipulator. This controller is easy to implement from the point of view of measuring techniques and actuation. Numerical simulations verify the effectiveness of the presented methods. In order to verify the suitability of the control algorithm, a platform with a 3D flexible manipulator has been employed for testing. Experimental tests on this platform illustrate the applications of the techniques developed in the paper.
Abstract: The paper presents an advanced control system for
tennis ball throwing machines to improve their accuracy according to
the ball impact points. A further advantage of the system is the much
easier calibration process involving the intelligent solution of the
automatic adjustment of the stroking parameters according to the ball
elasticity, the self-calibration, the use of the safety margin at very flat
strokes and the possibility to placing the machine to any position of
the half court. The system applies mathematical methods to
determine the exact ball trajectories and special approximating
processes to access all points on the aimed half court.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method of remotely controlling robots with arm gestures using surface electromyography (EMG) and accelerometer sensors attached to the operator’s wrists. The EMG and accelerometer sensors receive signals from the arm gestures of the operator and infer the corresponding movements to execute the command to control the robot. The movements of the robot include moving forward and backward and turning left and right. The accuracy is over 99% and movements can be controlled in real time.
Abstract: The computer aided for design, analysis, control, visualization and simulation of robotized workcells is very interesting in this time. Computer Aided Robot Control (CARC) is a subsystem of the system CIM including the computer aided systems of all activities connected with visualization and working of robotized workcells. There are three basic ideas: current CAD/CAM/CAE systems for design and 3D visualization, special PC based control and simulation systems and Augmented Reality Aided Manufacturing (ARAM) systems. This paper describes example of Open Source software application that can to be utilized at planning of the robotized workcells, visualization and off-line programming the automated processes realized by authors.
Abstract: This paper presents a new problem solving approach
that is able to generate optimal policy solution for finite-state
stochastic sequential decision-making problems with high data
efficiency. The proposed algorithm iteratively builds and improves
an approximate Markov Decision Process (MDP) model along with
cost-to-go value approximates by generating finite length trajectories
through the state-space. The approach creates a synergy between an
approximate evolving model and approximate cost-to-go values to
produce a sequence of improving policies finally converging to the
optimal policy through an intelligent and structured search of the
policy space. The approach modifies the policy update step of the
policy iteration so as to result in a speedy and stable convergence to
the optimal policy. We apply the algorithm to a non-holonomic
mobile robot control problem and compare its performance with
other Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches, e.g., a) Q-learning,
b) Watkins Q(λ), c) SARSA(λ).
Abstract: In this paper a simple terrain evaluation method for
hexapod robot is introduced. This method is based on feet coordinate
evaluation when all are on the ground. Depending on the feet
coordinate differences the local terrain evaluation is possible. Terrain
evaluation is necessary for right gait selection and/or body position
correction. For terrain roughness evaluation three planes are plotted:
two of them as definition points use opposite feet coordinates, third
coincides with the robot body plane. The leaning angle of body plane
is evaluated measuring gravity force using three-axis accelerometer.
Terrain roughness evaluation method is based on angle estimation
between normal vectors of these planes. Aim of this work is to
present a simple method for embedded robot controller, allowing to
find the best further movement settings.
Abstract: Evolvable hardware (EHW) is a developing field that
applies evolutionary algorithm (EA) to automatically design circuits,
antennas, robot controllers etc. A lot of research has been done in this
area and several different EAs have been introduced to tackle
numerous problems, as scalability, evolvability etc. However every
time a specific EA is chosen for solving a particular task, all its
components, such as population size, initialization, selection
mechanism, mutation rate, and genetic operators, should be selected
in order to achieve the best results. In the last three decade the
selection of the right parameters for the EA-s components for solving
different “test-problems" has been investigated. In this paper the
behaviour of mutation rate for designing logic circuits, which has not
been done before, has been deeply analyzed. The mutation rate for an
EHW system modifies the number of inputs of each logic gates, the
functionality (for example from AND to NOR) and the connectivity
between logic gates. The behaviour of the mutation has been
analyzed based on the number of generations, genotype redundancy
and number of logic gates for the evolved circuits. The experimental
results found provide the behaviour of the mutation rate during
evolution for the design and optimization of simple logic circuits.
The experimental results propose the best mutation rate to be used for
designing combinational logic circuits. The research presented is
particular important for those who would like to implement a
dynamic mutation rate inside the evolutionary algorithm for evolving
digital circuits. The researches on the mutation rate during the last 40
years are also summarized.
Abstract: Fundamental sensor-motor couplings form the backbone
of most mobile robot control tasks, and often need to be implemented
fast, efficiently and nevertheless reliably. Machine learning
techniques are therefore often used to obtain the desired sensor-motor
competences.
In this paper we present an alternative to established machine
learning methods such as artificial neural networks, that is very fast,
easy to implement, and has the distinct advantage that it generates
transparent, analysable sensor-motor couplings: system identification
through nonlinear polynomial mapping.
This work, which is part of the RobotMODIC project at the
universities of Essex and Sheffield, aims to develop a theoretical understanding
of the interaction between the robot and its environment.
One of the purposes of this research is to enable the principled design
of robot control programs.
As a first step towards this aim we model the behaviour of the
robot, as this emerges from its interaction with the environment, with
the NARMAX modelling method (Nonlinear, Auto-Regressive, Moving
Average models with eXogenous inputs). This method produces
explicit polynomial functions that can be subsequently analysed using
established mathematical methods.
In this paper we demonstrate the fidelity of the obtained NARMAX
models in the challenging task of robot route learning; we present a
set of experiments in which a Magellan Pro mobile robot was taught
to follow four different routes, always using the same mechanism to
obtain the required control law.
Abstract: The robot is a repeated task plant. The control of such
a plant under parameter variations and load disturbances is one of the
important problems. The aim of this work is to design Geno-Fuzzy
controller suitable for online applications to control single link rigid
robot arm plant. The genetic-fuzzy online controller (indirect
controller) has two genetic-fuzzy blocks, the first as controller, the
second as identifier. The identification method is based on inverse
identification technique. The proposed controller it tested in normal
and load disturbance conditions.
Abstract: Utilization of various sensors has made it possible to
extend capabilities of industrial robots. Among these are vision
sensors that are used for providing visual information to assist robot
controllers. This paper presents a method of integrating a vision
system and a simulation program with an industrial robot. The vision
system is employed to detect a target object and compute its location
in the robot environment. Then, the target object-s information is sent
to the robot controller via parallel communication port. The robot
controller uses the extracted object information and the simulation
program to control the robot arm for approaching, grasping and
relocating the object. This paper presents technical details of system
components and describes the methodology used for this integration.
It also provides a case study to prove the validity of the methodology
developed.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to present a reliable mean for human-computer interfacing based on finger gestures made in two dimensions, which could be interpreted and adequately used in controlling a remote robot's movement. The gestures were captured and interpreted using an algorithm based on trigonometric functions, in calculating the angular displacement from one point of touch to another as the user-s finger moved within a time interval; thereby allowing for pattern spotting of the captured gesture. In this paper the design and implementation of such a gesture based user interface was presented, utilizing the aforementioned algorithm. These techniques were then used to control a remote mobile robot's movement. A resistive touch screen was selected as the gesture sensor, then utilizing a programmed microcontroller to interpret them respectively.
Abstract: Cluster analysis is the name given to a diverse collection of techniques that can be used to classify objects (e.g. individuals, quadrats, species etc). While Kohonen's Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) or Self-Organizing Map (SOM) networks have been successfully applied as a classification tool to various problem domains, including speech recognition, image data compression, image or character recognition, robot control and medical diagnosis, its potential as a robust substitute for clustering analysis remains relatively unresearched. SOM networks combine competitive learning with dimensionality reduction by smoothing the clusters with respect to an a priori grid and provide a powerful tool for data visualization. In this paper, SOM is used for creating a toroidal mapping of two-dimensional lattice to perform cluster analysis on results of a chemical analysis of wines produced in the same region in Italy but derived from three different cultivators, referred to as the “wine recognition data" located in the University of California-Irvine database. The results are encouraging and it is believed that SOM would make an appealing and powerful decision-support system tool for clustering tasks and for data visualization.
Abstract: Nowadays, with the emerging of the new applications
like robot control in image processing, artificial vision for visual
servoing is a rapidly growing discipline and Human-machine
interaction plays a significant role for controlling the robot. This
paper presents a new algorithm based on spatio-temporal volumes for
visual servoing aims to control robots. In this algorithm, after
applying necessary pre-processing on video frames, a spatio-temporal
volume is constructed for each gesture and feature vector is extracted.
These volumes are then analyzed for matching in two consecutive
stages. For hand gesture recognition and classification we tested
different classifiers including k-Nearest neighbor, learning vector
quantization and back propagation neural networks. We tested the
proposed algorithm with the collected data set and results showed the
correct gesture recognition rate of 99.58 percent. We also tested the
algorithm with noisy images and algorithm showed the correct
recognition rate of 97.92 percent in noisy images.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an architecture for easily
constructing a robot controller. The architecture is a multi-agent
system which has eight agents: the Man-machine interface, Task
planner, Task teaching editor, Motion planner, Arm controller,
Vehicle controller, Vision system and CG display. The controller has
three databases: the Task knowledge database, the Robot database and
the Environment database. Based on this controller architecture, we
are constructing an experimental power distribution line maintenance
robot system and are doing the experiment for the maintenance tasks,
for example, “Bolt insertion task".
Abstract: In this paper, a Cooperative Multi-robot for Carrying
Targets (CMCT) algorithm is proposed. The multi-robot team
consists of three robots, one is a supervisor and the others are
workers for carrying boxes in a store of 100×100 m2. Each robot has
a self recharging mechanism. The CMCT minimizes robot-s worked
time for carrying many boxes during day by working in parallel. That
is, the supervisor detects the required variables in the same time
another robots work with previous variables. It works with
straightforward mechanical models by using simple cosine laws. It
detects the robot-s shortest path for reaching the target position
avoiding obstacles by using a proposed CMCT path planning
(CMCT-PP) algorithm. It prevents the collision between robots
during moving. The robots interact in an ad hoc wireless network.
Simulation results show that the proposed system that consists of
CMCT algorithm and its accomplished CMCT-PP algorithm
achieves a high improvement in time and distance while performing
the required tasks over the already existed algorithms.
