Abstract: Early detection of dementia by testing the spatial
memory can be applied using a virtual environment. This paper
presents guidelines on how to design a virtual environment
specifically for elderly in early detection of dementia. The specific
design needs to be considered because the effectiveness of the
technology relies on the ability of the end user to use it. The primary
goal of these guidelines is to promote accessibility. Based on these
guidelines, a virtual simulation was developed and evaluated. The
results on usability of acceptance and satisfaction that are tested on
young (control group) and elderly participants indicate that these
guidelines are reliable and useful for use with elderly people.
Abstract: Sunflower stalks were analysed for chemical
compositions: pentosan 15.84%, holocellulose 70.69%,
alphacellulose 45.74%, glucose 27.10% and xylose 7.69% based on
dry weight of 100-g raw material. The most optimum condition for
steam explosion pretreatment was as follows. Sunflower stalks were
cut into small pieces and soaked in 0.02 M H2SO4 for overnight.
After that, they were steam exploded at 207 C and 21 kg/cm2 for 3
minutes to fractionate cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The
resulting hydrolysate, containing hemicellulose, and cellulose pulp
contained xylose sugar at 2.53% and 7.00%, respectively.The pulp
was further subjected to enzymatic saccharification at 50 C, pH 4.8 citrate buffer) with pulp/buffer 6% (w/w)and Celluclast 1.5L/pulp
2.67% (w/w) to obtain single glucose with maximum yield 11.97%.
After fixed-bed fermentation under optimum condition using
conventional yeast mixtures to produce bioethanol, it indicated
maximum ethanol yield of 0.028 g/100 g sunflower stalk.
Abstract: Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (natural sweetener) belongs
to Asteraceae family and can be used as substitute of artificial
sweeteners for diabetic patients. Conventionally, it is cultivated by
seeds or stem cutting, but seed viability rate is poor. A protocol for
callus induction and multiplication was developed to produce large
no. of calli in short period. Surface sterilized nodal, leaf and root
explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with
different concentrations of plant hormone like, IBA, kinetin, NAA,
2,4-D, and NAA in combination with 2,4-D. 100% callusing was
observed from leaf explants cultured on combination of NAA and
2,4-D after three weeks while with 2,4-D, only 10% callusing was
observed. Calli obtained from leaf and root explants were shiny green
while with nodal explants it was hard and brown. The present
findings deal with induction of callusing in Stevia to achieve the
rapid callus multiplication for study of steviol glycosides in callus
culture.
Abstract: High performance Resistive Random Access Memory
(RRAM) based on HfOx has been prepared and its temperature
instability has been investigated in this work. With increasing
temperature, it is found that: leakage current at high resistance state
increases, which can be explained by the higher density of traps
inside dielectrics (related to trap-assistant tunneling), leading to a
smaller On/Off ratio; set and reset voltages decrease, which may be
attributed to the higher oxygen ion mobility, in addition to the
reduced potential barrier to create / recover oxygen ions (or oxygen
vacancies); temperature impact on the RRAM retention degradation
is more serious than electrical bias.
Abstract: Cyprus- offshore aquaculture industry has promising
prospects taking into account that Cyprus is an island. Its production
trend is increasing overtaking bigger countries such Greece and Italy.
However, current mooring systems seem to be under-performing
acting as obstacles for its future development. Furthermore, shallow
coastal waters scarcity due to competing industries dictates future
development to come by moving further from shore exposing fish
farms and subsequently mooring systems to harsher environmental
loadings. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to design mooring
systems based on engineering and scientific principles and leave
behind the present “trial and error" methods. This paper presents the
current state of Cyprus- offshore aquaculture industry and focuses of
its mooring designs by proposing a new methodology for designing
more reliable systems, hence ensuring its future.
Abstract: Most real world systems express themselves formally
as a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. As applications grow, the
size and complexity of these equations also increase. In this work, we
highlight the key concepts in using the homotopy analysis method
as a methodology used to construct efficient iteration formulas for
nonlinear equations solving. The proposed method is experimentally
characterized according to a set of determined parameters which
affect the systems. The experimental results show the potential and
limitations of the new method and imply directions for future work.
Abstract: The Želazny Most tailing pond is one of the largest
facilities worldwide for waste disposal from the copper mines located
in South-West Poland. A potential failure of the dam would allow
more than 10 million cubic meters of contaminated slurry to flow to
the valley, causing immense environmental problems to the
surrounding area. Thus, the determination of the strength properties
of the dam's soils and their variability is of utmost importance.

Abstract: This paper introduces the application of seismic wave method in earthquake prediction and early estimation. The advantages of the seismic wave method over the traditional earthquake prediction method are demonstrated. An example is presented in this study to show the accuracy and efficiency of using the seismic wave method in predicting a medium-sized earthquake swarm occurred in Wencheng, Zhejiang, China. By applying this method, correct predictions were made on the day after this earthquake swarm started and the day the maximum earthquake occurred, which provided scientific bases for governmental decision-making.
Abstract: This paper presents the optimal controller design of
the generator control unit in the aircraft power system. The adaptive
tabu search technique is applied to tune the controller parameters
until the best terminal output voltage of generator is achieved. The
output response from the system with the controllers designed by the
proposed technique is compared with those from the conventional
method. The transient simulations using the commercial software
package show that the controllers designed from the adaptive tabu
search algorithm can provide the better output performance compared
with the result from the classical method. The proposed design
technique is very flexible and useful for electrical aircraft engineers.
Abstract: This paper describes the performance of TCP Vegas
over the wireless IPv6 network. The performance of TCP Vegas is
evaluated using network simulator (ns-2). The simulation experiment
investigates how packet spacing affects the network delay, network
throughput and network efficiency of TCP Vegas. Moreover, we
investigate how the variable FTP packet sizes affect the network
performance. The result of the simulation experiment shows that as
the packet spacing is implements, the network delay is reduces,
network throughput and network efficiency is optimizes. As the FTP
packet sizes increase, the ratio of delay per throughput decreases.
From the result of experiment, we propose the appropriate packet size
in transmitting file transfer protocol application using TCP Vegas
with packet spacing enhancement over wireless IPv6 environment in
ns-2. Additionally, we suggest the appropriate ratio in determining
the appropriate RTT and buffer size in a network.
Abstract: Realistic 3D face model is more precise in representing
pose, illumination, and expression of face than 2D face model so that it
can be utilized usefully in various applications such as face recognition,
games, avatars, animations, and etc.
In this paper, we propose a 3D face modeling method based on 3D
dense morphable shape model. The proposed 3D modeling method
first constructs a 3D dense morphable shape model from 3D face scan
data obtained using a 3D scanner. Next, the proposed method extracts
and matches facial landmarks from 2D image sequence containing a
face to be modeled, and then reconstructs 3D vertices coordinates of
the landmarks using a factorization-based SfM technique. Then, the
proposed method obtains a 3D dense shape model of the face to be
modeled by fitting the constructed 3D dense morphable shape model
into the reconstructed 3D vertices. Also, the proposed method makes a
cylindrical texture map using 2D face image sequence. Finally, the
proposed method generates a 3D face model by rendering the 3D dense
face shape model using the cylindrical texture map. Through building
processes of 3D face model by the proposed method, it is shown that
the proposed method is relatively easy, fast and precise.
Abstract: In this paper, an analysis of a target location estimation
system using the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) for high
performance radar systems is presented. In synthetic environments,
we are here concerned with three key elements of radar system
modeling, which makes radar systems operates accurately in strategic
situation in virtual ground. Radar Cross Section (RCS) modeling
is used to determine the actual amount of electromagnetic waves
that are reflected from a tactical object. Pattern Propagation Factor
(PPF) is an attenuation coefficient of the radar equation that contains
the reflection from the surface of the earth, the diffraction, the
refraction and scattering by the atmospheric environment. Clutter is
the unwanted echoes of electronic systems. For the data fusion of
output results from radar detection in synthetic environment, BLUE
is used and compared with the mean values of each simulation results.
Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the radar system.
Abstract: Intuitionistic fuzzy sets as proposed by Atanassov,
have gained much attention from past and latter researchers for
applications in various fields. Similarity measures between
intuitionistic fuzzy sets were developed afterwards. However, it does
not cater the conflicting behavior of each element evaluated. We
therefore made some modification to the similarity measure of IFS
by considering conflicting concept to the model. In this paper, we
concentrate on Zhang and Fu-s similarity measures for IFSs and
some examples are given to validate these similarity measures. A
simple modification to Zhang and Fu-s similarity measures of IFSs
was proposed to find the best result according to the use of degree of
indeterminacy. Finally, we mark up with the application to real
decision making problems.
Abstract: A macroscopic constitutive equation is developed for a high-density cellulose insulation material with emphasis on the outof- plane stress relaxation behavior. A hypothesis is proposed where the total stress is additively composed by an out-of-plane visco-elastic isotropic contribution and an in-plane elastic orthotropic response. The theory is validated against out-of-plane stress relaxation, compressive experiments and in-plane tensile hysteresis, respectively. For large scale finite element simulations, the presented model provides a balance between simplicity and capturing the materials constitutive behaviour.
Abstract: Needs of an efficient information retrieval in recent
years in increased more then ever because of the frequent use of
digital information in our life. We see a lot of work in the area of
textual information but in multimedia information, we cannot find
much progress. In text based information, new technology of data
mining and data marts are now in working that were started from the
basic concept of database some where in 1960.
In image search and especially in image identification,
computerized system at very initial stages. Even in the area of image
search we cannot see much progress as in the case of text based
search techniques. One main reason for this is the wide spread roots
of image search where many area like artificial intelligence,
statistics, image processing, pattern recognition play their role. Even
human psychology and perception and cultural diversity also have
their share for the design of a good and efficient image recognition
and retrieval system.
A new object based search technique is presented in this paper
where object in the image are identified on the basis of their
geometrical shapes and other features like color and texture where
object-co-relation augments this search process.
To be more focused on objects identification, simple images are
selected for the work to reduce the role of segmentation in overall
process however same technique can also be applied for other
images.
Abstract: Because of its global reach, reduction of time
restraints, and ability to reduce costs and increase sales, use of the
Internet, the World Wide Web (WWW), and related technologies
can be a competitive tool in the arsenal of small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs). Countries the world over are interested in the
successful adoption of the Internet by SMEs. Because a vast
majority of jobs come from that sector, greater financial success of
SMEs translates into greater job growth and, subsequently, higher
tax revenue to the government. This research investigated the level
of Internet usage for business solutions by small and medium
enterprises in Jordan. Through the survey of a random sample of
100 firms with less than 500 employees and from data obtained
from this survey that formed the basis for our study, we found that
a majority of respondents use the Internet in business activities ,
the adoption of the Internet as a business tool is limited to a
brochure where Web site which primarily provides one way. As
such, there wasn't interactive information about the company and
its products and services.
Abstract: Concatenative speech synthesis is a method that can
make speech sound which has naturalness and high-individuality of a
speaker by introducing a large speech corpus. Based on this method, in
this paper, we propose a voice conversion method whose conversion
speech has high-individuality and naturalness. The authors also have
two subjective evaluation experiments for evaluating individuality and
sound quality of conversion speech. From the results, following three
facts have be confirmed: (a) the proposal method can convert the
individuality of speakers well, (b) employing the framework of unit
selection (especially join cost) of concatenative speech synthesis into
conventional voice conversion improves the sound quality of
conversion speech, and (c) the proposal method is robust against the
difference of genders between a source speaker and a target speaker.
Abstract: This paper describes the crashworthiness assessment and improvement of tlting train made of sandwich composites. The crashworhiness assessment of tilting train was conducted according to four collision scenarios of the Korean railway safety law. Collision analysis was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA 3D. The finite element model consists of 3-D finite element model and 1-D equivalent model to save the finite element modeling and calculation time. It found that the crashworthiness analysis results were satisfied with the performance requirements except the crash scenario-2. In order to meet the crashworthiness requirements for crash scenario-2, the stiffness reinforcement for the laminate composite cover and metal frames of cabmask structure were proposed. Consequentially, it has satisfied the requirement for crash scenario-2.
Abstract: In a competitive energy market, system reliability
should be maintained at all times. Power system operation being of
online in nature, the energy balance requirements must be satisfied to
ensure reliable operation the system. To achieve this, information
regarding the expected status of the system, the scheduled
transactions and the relevant inputs necessary to make either a
transaction contract or a transmission contract operational, have to be
made available in real time. The real time procedure proposed,
facilitates this. This paper proposes a quadratic curve learning
procedure, which enables a generator-s contribution to the retailer
demand, power loss of transaction in a line at the retail end and its
associated losses for an oncoming operating scenario to be predicted.
Matlab program was used to test in on a 24-bus IEE Reliability Test
System, and the results are found to be acceptable.
Abstract: Generation system reliability assessment is an
important task which can be performed using deterministic or
probabilistic techniques. The probabilistic approaches have
significant advantages over the deterministic methods. However,
more complicated modeling is required by the probabilistic
approaches. Power generation model is a basic requirement for this
assessment. One form of the generation models is the well known
capacity outage probability table (COPT). Different analytical
techniques have been used to construct the COPT. These approaches
require considerable mathematical modeling of the generating units.
The unit-s models are combined to build the COPT which will add
more burdens on the process of creating the COPT. Decimal to
Binary Conversion (DBC) technique is widely and commonly applied
in electronic systems and computing This paper proposes a novel
utilization of the DBC to create the COPT without engaging in
analytical modeling or time consuming simulations. The simple
binary representation , “0 " and “1 " is used to model the states o f
generating units. The proposed technique is proven to be an effective
approach to build the generation model.
