Abstract: Based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis, a full set of upper bound solutions for the stability of homogeneous rock slopes subjected to tension cracks are obtained. The generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion is employed to describe the non-linear strength envelope of rocks. In this paper, critical failure mechanisms are determined for cracks of known depth but unspecified location, cracks of known location but unknown depth, and cracks of unspecified location and depth. It is shown that there is a nearly up to 50% drop in terms of the stability factors for the rock slopes intersected by a tension crack compared with intact ones. Tables and charts of solutions in dimensionless forms are presented for ease of use by practitioners.
Abstract: It is believed that continuously variable transmission (CVT) will dominate the automotive transmissions in the future. The most popular design is Van Doorne-s CVT with single metal pushing V-belt. However, it is only applicable to low power passenger cars because its major limitation is low torque capacity. Therefore, this research studies a novel dual-belt CVT system to overcome the limitation of traditional single-belt CVT, such that it can be applicable to the heavy-duty vehicles. This paper presents the mathematical model of the design and its experimental verification. Experimental and simulated results show that the model developed is valid and the proposed dual-belt CVT can really overcome the traditional limitation of single-belt Van Doorne-s CVT.
Abstract: In this study, we used shape memory alloys as
actuators to build a biomorphic robot which can imitate the motion of
an earthworm. The robot can be used to explore in a narrow space.
Therefore we chose shape memory alloys as actuators. Because of the
small deformation of a wire shape memory alloy, spiral shape memory
alloys are selected and installed both on the X axis and Y axis (each
axis having two shape memory alloys) to enable the biomorphic robot
to do reciprocating motion. By the mechanism we designed, the robot
can increase the distance as it moves in a duty cycle. In addition, two
shape memory alloys are added to the robot head for controlling right
and left turns. By sending pulses through the I/O card from the
controller, the signals are then amplified by a driver to heat the shape
memory alloys in order to make the SMA shrink to pull the mechanism
to move.
Abstract: It is crucial to quantitatively evaluate the treatment of
epilepsy patients. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that
compared to the healthy control subjects, the epilepsy patients have
abnormal resting-state connectivity. In this study, we used the
imaginary part of coherency to measure the resting-state connectivity.
The analysis results shown that compared to the healthy control
subjects, epilepsy patients tend to have abnormal rhythm brain
connectivity over their epileptic focus.
Abstract: This paper contributes to the field of Environmental
Awareness Training (EAT) evaluation in terms of military activities.
Environmental management of military activities is a growing concern
for defence forces worldwide and the importance of EAT is becoming
widely recognized. As one of Australia-s largest landowners, the
Australian Defence Force (ADF) is extremely mindful of its duty as a
joint environmental manager. It has an integrated Environmental
Management System (EMS) to assist environmental management and
EAT is an essential part of the ADF EMS model. This paper examines
how EAT was conducted during the exercise Talisman Saber in 2009
(TS09) and evaluates its effectiveness, using Shoalwater Bay Training
Area (SWBTA), one of the most significant military training areas and
a significant protected area in Australia, as a case study. A
questionnaire survey conducted showed, overall, that EAT was
effective from the perspective of a sample of participants.
Recommendations are made for the ADF to refine EAT for future
exercises.
