Abstract: Hot tear cracking and residual stress are two different consequences of thermal stress both of which can be considered as casting problem. The purpose of the present study is simulation of the effect of casting shape characteristic on hot tearing and residual stress. This study shows that the temperature range for simulation of hot tearing and residual stress are different. In this study, in order to study the development of thermal stress and to predict the hot tearing and residual stress of shaped casting, MAGMASOFT simulation program was used. The strategy of this research was the prediction of hot tear location using pinpointing hot spot and thermal stress concentration zones. The results shows that existing of stress concentration zone increases the hot tearing probability and consequently reduces the amount of remaining residual stress in casting parts.
Abstract: H.264/AVC offers a considerably higher improvement
in coding efficiency compared to other compression standards such
as MPEG-2, but computational complexity is increased significantly.
In this paper, we propose selective mode decision schemes for fast
intra prediction mode selection. The objective is to reduce the
computational complexity of the H.264/AVC encoder without
significant rate-distortion performance degradation. In our proposed
schemes, the intra prediction complexity is reduced by limiting the
luma and chroma prediction modes using the directional information
of the 16×16 prediction mode. Experimental results are presented to
show that the proposed schemes reduce the complexity by up to 78%
maintaining the similar PSNR quality with about 1.46% bit rate
increase in average.
Abstract: In this paper an open agent-based modular framework
for personalized and adaptive curriculum generation in e-learning
environment is proposed. Agent-based approaches offer several
potential advantages over alternative approaches. Agent-based
systems exhibit high levels of flexibility and robustness in dynamic
or unpredictable environments by virtue of their intrinsic autonomy.
The presented framework enables integration of different types of
expert agents, various kinds of learning objects and user modeling
techniques. It creates possibilities for adaptive e-learning process.
The KM e-learning system is in a process of implementation in
Varna Free University and will be used for supporting the
educational process at the University.
Abstract: The exact solutions of the equations describing the steady plane motion of an incompressible fluid of variable viscosity for an arbitrary state equation are determined in the (ξ,ψ) − or (η,ψ )- coordinates where ψ(x,y) is the stream function, ξ and η are the parts of the analytic function, ϖ =ξ( x,y )+iη( x,y ). Most of the solutions involve arbitrary function/ functions indicating
that the flow equations possess an infinite set of solutions.
Abstract: Using DNA microarrays the comparative analysis of a
gene expression profiles is carried out in a liver and kidneys of pigs.
The hypothesis of a cross hybridization of one probe with different
cDNA sites of the same gene or different genes is checked up, and it
is shown, that cross hybridization can be a source of essential errors
at revealing of a key genes in organ-specific transcriptome. It is
reveald that distinctions in profiles of a gene expression are well coordinated
with function, morphology, biochemistry and histology of
these organs.
Abstract: The lubricating properties of commercially available
mucins originating from different animal organs, namely bovine
submaxillary mucin (BSM) and porcine gastric mucin (PGM), have
been characterized at polymeric surfaces for biomedical applications.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and pin-on-disk tribometry have
been employed for tribological studies at nanoscale and macroscale
contacts, respectively. Polystyrene (PS) was employed to represent
‘rigid’ contacts, whereas poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was
employed to represent ‘soft contacts’. To understand the lubricating
properties of mucins in correlation with the coverage on surfaces,
adsorption properties of mucins onto the polymeric substrates have
been characterized by means of optical waveguide light-mode
spectroscopy (OWLS). Both mucins showed facile adsorption onto
both polymeric substrates, but the lubricity was highly dependent
upon the pH change between 2 and 7.
Abstract: Numerous divergence measures (spectral distance, cepstral
distance, difference of the cepstral coefficients, Kullback-Leibler
divergence, distance given by the General Likelihood Ratio, distance
defined by the Recursive Bayesian Changepoint Detector and the
Mahalanobis measure) are compared in this study. The measures are
used for detection of abrupt spectral changes in synthetic AR signals
via the sliding window algorithm. Two experiments are performed;
the first is focused on detection of single boundary while the second
concentrates on detection of a couple of boundaries. Accuracy of
detection is judged for each method; the measures are compared
according to results of both experiments.
Abstract: A computational study at the level density functional theory (DFT) was carried out to investigate the influences of Si and C-doping on the 14N and 27Al quadrupole coupling constant in the (10, 0) zigzag single ? walled Aluminum-Nitride nanotube (AlNNT). To this aim, a 1.16nm, length of AlNNT consisting of 40 Al atoms and 40 N atoms were selected where the end atoms are capped by hydrogen atom. To follow the purpose, three Si atoms and three C atoms were doped instead of three Al atoms and three N atoms as a central ring in the surface of the Si and C-doped AlNNT. At first both of systems optimized at the level of BLYP method and 6-31G (d) basis set and after that, the NQR parameters were calculated at the level BLYP method and 6-311+G** basis set in two optimized forms. The calculate CQ values for both optimized AlNNT systems, raw and Si and C-doped, reveal different electronic environments in the mentioned systems. It was also demonstrated that the end nuclei have the largest CQ values in both considered AlNNT systems. All the calculations were carried out using Gaussian 98 package of program.
Abstract: This paper propose the robust character segmentation method for license plate with topological transform such as twist, rotation. The first step of the proposed method is to find a candidate region for character and license plate. The character or license plate
must be appeared as closed loop in the edge image. In the case of
detecting candidate for character region, the evaluation of detected
region is using topological relationship between each character. When
this method decides license plate candidate region, character features
in the region with binarization are used. After binarization for the detected candidate region, each character region is decided again. In
this step, each character region is fitted more than previous step. In the
next step, the method checks other character regions with different
scale near the detected character regions, because most license plates
have license numbers with some meaningful characters around them.
The method uses perspective projection for geometrical normalization.
If there is topological distortion in the character region, the method
projects the region on a template which is defined as standard license
plate using perspective projection. In this step, the method is able to
separate each number region and small meaningful characters. The
evaluation results are tested with a number of test images.
Abstract: Optimal selection of electrical insulations in electrical
machinery insures reliability during operation. From the insulation
studies of view for electrical machines, stator is the most important
part. This fact reveals the requirement for inspection of the electrical
machine insulation along with the electro-thermal stresses. In the
first step of the study, a part of the whole structure of machine in
which covers the general characteristics of the machine is chosen,
then based on the electromagnetic analysis (finite element method),
the machine operation is simulated. In the simulation results, the
temperature distribution of the total structure is presented
simultaneously by using electro-thermal analysis. The results of
electro-thermal analysis can be used for designing an optimal cooling
system. In order to design, review and comparing the cooling
systems, four wiring structures in the slots of Stator are presented.
The structures are compared to each other in terms of electrical,
thermal distribution and remaining life of insulation by using Finite
Element analysis. According to the steps of the study, an optimization
algorithm has been presented for selection of appropriate structure.
Abstract: This paper presents modern vibration signalprocessing
techniques for vehicle gearbox fault diagnosis, via the
wavelet analysis and the Squared Envelope (SE) technique. The
wavelet analysis is regarded as a powerful tool for the detection of
sudden changes in non-stationary signals. The Squared Envelope
(SE) technique has been extensively used for rolling bearing
diagnostics. In the present work a scheme of using the Squared
Envelope technique for early detection of gear tooth pit. The pitting
defect is manufactured on the tooth side of a fifth speed gear on the
intermediate shaft of a vehicle gearbox. The objective is to
supplement the current techniques of gearbox fault diagnosis based
on using the raw vibration and ordered signals. The test stand is
equipped with three dynamometers; the input dynamometer serves as
the internal combustion engine, the output dynamometers introduce
the load on the flanges of output joint shafts. The gearbox used for
experimental measurements is the type most commonly used in
modern small to mid-sized passenger cars with transversely mounted
powertrain and front wheel drive; a five-speed gearbox with final
drive gear and front wheel differential. The results show that the
approaches methods are effective for detecting and diagnosing
localized gear faults in early stage under different operation
conditions, and are more sensitive and robust than current gear
diagnostic techniques.
Abstract: Rice bran has been abandoned as agricultural waste for million tonnes per year in Thailand, therefore they have been proposed to be utilized as a rich carbon source in the production of bioethanol. Many toxic compounds are possibly released during the pretreatment of rice bran prior the fermentation process. This study aims to analyze on the availability of toxic compounds and the amount of glucose obtained from 2 different pretreatments using sulfuric acid and mixed cellulase enzymes (without and with delignification/ activated charcoal). The concentration of furfural, 5- hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF), levulinic acid, vanillin, syringaldehyde and4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (4-HB) and the percent acetic acid were found to be 0.0517 ± 0.049 mg/L, 0.032 ± 0.06 mg/L, 21074 ± 1685.62 mg/L, 126.265 ± 6.005 mg/L, 2.89 ± 0.30 mg/L, 0.37 ± 0.031mg/L and 0.72% under the pretreatment process without delignification/ activated charcoal treatment and 384.47 ± 99.02 g/L, 0.068 mg/L, 142107.62 ± 8664.6 mg/L, 0.19 mg/L, 5.43 ± 3.29 mg/L, 4.80 ± 0.76 mg/L and 0.254% under the pretreatment process with delignification/ activated charcoal treatment respectively. The presence of high concentration of acetic acid was found to impede the growth of Zymomonas mobilis strain TISTR 551 despite the present of high concentration of levulinic acid. Z. mobilis strain TISTR 551 was found to produce 8.96 ± 4.06 g/L of ethanol under 4 days fementation period in biofilm stage in which represented 40% theoretical yield.
Abstract: The rapid improvement of the microprocessor and network has made it possible for the PC cluster to compete with conventional supercomputers. Lots of high throughput type of applications can be satisfied by using the current desktop PCs, especially for those in PC classrooms, and leave the supercomputers for the demands from large scale high performance parallel computations. This paper presents our development on enabling an automated deployment mechanism for cluster computing to utilize the computing power of PCs such as reside in PC classroom. After well deployment, these PCs can be transformed into a pre-configured cluster computing resource immediately without touching the existing education/training environment installed on these PCs. Thus, the training activities will not be affected by this additional activity to harvest idle computing cycles. The time and manpower required to build and manage a computing platform in geographically distributed PC classrooms also can be reduced by this development.
Abstract: Experimental study on the influence of fibre content
on crack behaviour and propagation in synthetic-fibre reinforced
beams has been reported in this paper. The tensile behaviour of
metallic fibre concrete is evaluated in terms of residual flexural
tensile strength values determined from the load-crack mouth
opening displacement curve or load-deflection curve obtained by
applying a centre-point load on a simply supported notched prism.
The results achieved demonstrate that an increase in fibre content has
an almost negligible effect on compressive and tensile splitting
properties, causes a marginal increment in flexural tensile strength
and increasesthe Re3 value.
Abstract: This study proposes a hybrid minimal repair policy
which combines periodic maintenance policy with age-based maintenance policy for a serial production system. Parameters of such policy are defined as and which indicate as hybrid minimal
repair time and planned preventive maintenance time
respectively . Under this hybrid policy, the system is
repaired minimally if it fails during ,. A perfect repair is
conducted on the first failure after at any machines. At the same time, we take opportunity to advance the preventive maintenance of
other machines simultaneously. If the system is still operating
properly up to , then the preventive maintenance is carried out as its
predetermined schedule. For a given , we obtain the optimal value which minimizes the expected cost per time unit. Numerical
example is presented to illustrate the properties of the optimal solution.

examinations. Commonly used data clustering algorithms have been
reviewed and as a result several interesting results have been
gathered.
Abstract: This article outlines a hybrid method, incorporating
multiple techniques into an evaluation process, in order to select
competitive suppliers in a supply chain. It enables a purchaser to do
single sourcing and multiple sourcing by calculating a combined
supplier score, which accounts for both qualitative and quantitative
factors that have impact on supply chain performance.
Abstract: An automatic method for the extraction of feature points for face based applications is proposed. The system is based upon volumetric feature descriptors, which in this paper has been extended to incorporate scale space. The method is robust to noise and has the ability to extract local and holistic features simultaneously from faces stored in a database. Extracted features are stable over a range of faces, with results indicating that in terms of intra-ID variability, the technique has the ability to outperform manual landmarking.
Abstract: The Malaysian government is promoting
entrepreneurship development skills amongst farmers through informal
courses. These courses will concentrate on teaching managerial skills as
inevitable means for small farms to succeed by making farmers more
creative and innovative. Therefore it is important to assess the effect of
informal agri-entrepreneurial training in developing entrepreneurship
among the farmers in Malaysia. Seven hundred and ninety six farmers
(796) farmers were interviewed via structured questionnaire to define
their opinion on whether the current informal educational and training
establishments are sufficient to teach and develop entrepreneurial
skills. Factor analysis and logic regression analysis were used to
determine the motivating factors and predict their impact on the
development of entrepreneurial skills. The result from the factor analysis
led us to investigate the association between these factors and farmers-
opinions about the development of entrepreneurial skills and traits
through participating in informal entrepreneurship training or education.
The outcome has shown us that the importance of informal training to
promote entrepreneurship among farmers is crucial. The training should
be intensified to encourage farmers to not only focus on the modern
technologies but also on the fundamental changes in their attitude towards
agriculture as a business.

Abstract: Preliminary studies on Kuwait high voltage
transmission system show significant increase in the short circuit
level at some of the grid substations and some generating stations.
This increase results from the growth in the power transmission
systems in size and complexity. New generating stations are expected
to be added to the system within the next few years. This paper
describes the study analysis performed to evaluate the available and
potential solutions to control SC levels in Kuwait power system. It
also presents a modified planning of the transmission network in
order to fulfill this task.
