Abstract: Banana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are
agricultural residues that can be used for conversion to bio-char, biooil,
and gases by using thermochemical process. The aim of this work
is to characterize banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem
through proximate analysis, elemental analysis, chemical analysis,
thermo-gravimetric analysis, and heating calorific value. The ash
contents of the banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem are
11.0 mf wt.% and 20.6 mf wt.%; while the carbon content of banana
pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are 37.9 mf wt.% and 35.58 mf
wt.% respectively. The molecular formulas for banana stem and
banana fruit-bunch-stem are C24H33NO26 and C19H29NO33
respectively. The measured higher heating values of banana pseudostem
and banana fruit-bunch-stem are 15.5MJ/kg and 12.7 MJ/kg
respectively. By chemical analysis, the lignin, cellulose, and
hemicellulose contents in the samples will also be presented. The
feasibility of the banana wastes to be a feedstock for thermochemical
process in comparison with other biomass will be discussed in this
paper.
Abstract: Aerosols are small particles suspended in air that have wide varying spatial and temporal distributions. The concentration of aerosol in total columnar atmosphere is normally measured using aerosol optical depth (AOD). In long-term monitoring stations, accurate AOD retrieval is often difficult due to the lack of frequent calibration. To overcome this problem, a near-sea-level Langley calibration algorithm is developed using the combination of clear-sky detection model and statistical filter. It attempts to produce a dataset that consists of only homogenous and stable atmospheric condition for the Langley calibration purposes. In this paper, a radiance-based validation method is performed to further investigate the feasibility and consistency of the proposed algorithm at different location, day, and time. The algorithm is validated using SMARTS model based n DNI value. The overall results confirmed that the proposed calibration algorithm feasible and consistent for measurements taken at different sites and weather conditions.
Abstract: In recent years Malaysia has included renewable
energy as an alternative fuel to help in diversifying the country-s
energy reliance on oil, natural gas, coal and hydropower with
biomass and solar energy gaining priority. The scope of this paper is
to look at the designing procedures and analysis of a solar thermal
parabolic trough concentrator by simulation utilizing meteorological
data in several parts of Malaysia. Parameters which include the
aperture area, the diameter of the receiver and the working fluid may
be varied to optimize the design. Aperture area is determined by
considering the width and the length of the concentrator whereas the
geometric concentration ratio (CR) is obtained by considering the
width and diameter of the receiver. Three types of working fluid are
investigated. Theoretically, concentration ratios can be very high in
the range of 10 to 40 000 depending on the optical elements used and
continuous tracking of the sun. However, a thorough analysis is
essential as discussed in this paper where optical precision and
thermal analysis must be carried out to evaluate the performance of
the parabolic trough concentrator as the theoretical CR is not the only
factor that should be considered.
