Abstract: To understand the seismic behavior of the offshore
structures, the dynamic interaction of the water-structure-soil should
be assessed. In this regard the role of the water dynamic properties in
magnifying or reducing of the effects of earthquake induced motions
on offshore structures haven't been investigated in precise manner in
available literature. In this paper the sea water level fluctuations
effects on the seismic behavior of a sample of offshore structures has
been investigated by emphasizing on the water-structure interaction
phenomenon. For this purpose a two dimensional finite element
model of offshore structures as well as surrounded water has been
developed using ANSYS software. The effect of soil interaction with
embedded pile foundation has been imposed by using a series of
nonlinear springs in horizontal and vertical directions in soil-piles
contact points. In the model, the earthquake induced motions have
been applied on springs and consequently the motions propagated
upward to the structure and surrounded water. As a result of
numerical study, the horizontal deformations of the offshore deck as
well as internal force and buckling coefficient in structural elements
have been recorded and controlled with and without water presence.
In part of study a parametric study has been accomplished on sea
water level fluctuations and effect of this parameter has been studied
on the aforementioned numerical results.
Abstract: The effect of a uniform magnetic field on the
formation of drops of specific size has been investigated numerically
in a T-shaped microchannel. Previous researches indicated that the
drop sizes of secondary stream decreases, with increasing main
stream flow rate and decreasing interfacial tension. In the present
study the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the main stream is
considered, and it is proposed that by increasing the Hartmann
number, the size of the drops of the secondary stream will be
decreased.
Abstract: The present work is concerned with the free
convective two dimensional flow and heat transfer, in isotropic fluid
filled porous rectangular enclosure with differentially heated walls for
steady state incompressible flow have been investigated for non-
Darcy flow model. Effects of Darcy number (0.0001 £Da£ 10),
Rayleigh number (10 £Ra£ 5000), and aspect ratio (0.25 £AR£ 4), for
a range of porosity (0.4 £e£ 0.9) with and without moving lower wall
have been studied. The cavity was insulated at the lower and upper
surfaces. The right and left heated surfaces allows convective
transport through the porous medium, generating a thermal
stratification and flow circulations. It was found that the Darcy
number, Rayleigh number, aspect ratio, and porosity considerably
influenced characteristics of flow and heat transfer mechanisms. The
results obtained are discussed in terms of the Nusselt number,
vectors, contours, and isotherms.
Abstract: Numerical study is performed to investigate the
temperature distribution in an annular diffuser fitted with helical tape
hub. Different pitches (Y = 20 mm, and Y = 30 mm) for the helical
tape are studied with different heights (H = 20 mm, 22 mm, and 24
mm) to be compared. The geometry of the annular diffuser and the
inlet condition for both hub arrangements are kept constant. The
result obtains that using helical tape insert with different pitches and
different heights will force the temperature to distribute in a helical
direction; however the use of helical tape hub with height (H = 22
mm) for both pitches enhance the temperature distribution in a good
manner.
Abstract: This paper presents and discusses the numerical simulations of transient laminar natural convection cooling of high Prandtl number fluids in cubical cavities, in which the six walls of the cavity are subjected to a step change in temperature. The effect of the fluid Prandtl number on the heat transfer coefficient is studied for three different fluids (Golden Syrup, Glycerin and Glycerin-water solution 50%). The simulations are performed at two different Rayleigh numbers (5·106 and 5·107) and six different Prandtl numbers (3 · 105 ≥Pr≥ 50). Heat conduction through the cavity glass walls is also considered. The propsed correlations of the averaged heat transfer coefficient (N u) showed that it is dependant on the initial Ra and almost independent on P r. The instantaneous flow patterns, temperature contours and time evolution of volume averaged temperature and heat transfer coefficient are presented and analyzed.
Abstract: Flow around a flat tube is studied numerically. Reynolds number is defined base on equivalent circular tube and it is varied in range of 100 to 300. Equations are solved by using finite volume method and results are presented in form of drag and lift coefficient. Results show that drag coefficient of flat tube is up to 66% lower than circular tube with equivalent diameter. In addition, by increasing l/D from 1 to 2, the drag coefficient of flat tube is decreased about 14-27%.
Abstract: A numerical study on the turbulent flow and heat
transfer characteristics in the rectangular channel with different types
of baffles is carried out. The inclined baffles have the width of 19.8
cm, the square diamond type hole having one side length of 2.55 cm,
and the inclination angle of 5o. Reynolds number is varied between
23,000 and 57,000. The SST turbulence model is applied in the
calculation. The validity of the numerical results is examined by the
experimental data. The numerical results of the flow field depict that
the flow patterns around the different baffle type are entirely different
and these significantly affect the local heat transfer characteristics.
The heat transfer and friction factor characteristics are significantly
affected by the perforation density of the baffle plate. It is found that
the heat transfer enhancement of baffle type II (3 hole baffle) has the
best values.
Abstract: The simulation of external aerodynamics is one of the most challenging and important automotive CFD applications. With the rapid developments of digital computers, CFD is used as a practical tool in modern fluid dynamics research. It integrates fluid mechanics disciplines, mathematics and computer science. In this study, two different types of simulations were made, one for the flow around a simplified high speed passenger car with a rear-spoiler and the other for the flow without a rear-spoiler. The standard k-ε model is selected to numerically simulate the external flow field of the simplified Camry model with or without a rear-spoiler. Through an analysis of the simulation results, a new rear spoiler is designed and it shows a mild reduction of the vehicle aerodynamics drag. This leads to less vehicle fuel consumption on the road.
Abstract: For many chemical and biological processes, the understanding of the mixing phenomenon and flow behavior in a stirred tank is of major importance. A three-dimensional numerical study was performed using the software Fluent, to study the flow field in a stirred tank with a Rushton turbine. In this work, we first studied the flow generated in the tank with a Rushton turbine. Then, we studied the effect of the variation of turbine’s submergence on the thermodynamic quantities defining the flow field. For that, four submergences were considered, while maintaining the same rotational speed (N =250rpm). This work intends to optimize the aeration performances of a Rushton turbine in a stirred tank.
Abstract: Three dimensional simulations in tube in tube heat
exchangers are investigated numerically in this study. In these
simulations forced convective heat transfer and laminar flow of
single-phase water are considered. In order to measure heat transfer
parameters in these heat exchangers, FLUENT CFD Solver is used in
this numerical method. For the purpose of creating geometry and
exert boundary and initial conditions in the present model, finite
volume method in Computational Fluid Dynamics is used in this
study. In the present study, at each Z-location, variation of local
temperatures, heat flux and Nusselt number at the whole tube is
investigated in detail. Thereafter, averaged computational Nusselt
number in this model is calculated. In addition, conceivable pressure
drops have been obtained at each Z-location in this model. Then,
pressure drop values in the present model are explored. Finally, all
the numerical results for this kind of heat exchanger will be discussed
precisely.
Abstract: The Navier–Stokes equations for unsteady, incompressible, viscous fluids in the axisymmetric coordinate system are solved using a control volume method. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique is used to track the free-surface of the liquid. Model predictions are in good agreement with experimental measurements. It is found that the dynamic processes after impact are sensitive to the initial droplet velocity and the liquid pool depth. The time evolution of the crown height and diameter are obtained by numerical simulation. The critical We number for splashing (Wecr) is studied for Oh (Ohnesorge) numbers in the range of 0.01~0.1; the results compares well with those of the experiments.
Abstract: The paper reports on the results of experimental and
numerical study of nonstationary swirling flow in an isothermal
model of vortex burner. It has been identified that main source of the
instability is related to a precessing vortex core (PVC) phenomenon.
The PVC induced flow pulsation characteristics such as precession
frequency and its variation as a function of flowrate and swirl number
have been explored making use of acoustic probes. Additionally
pressure transducers were used to measure the pressure drops on the
working chamber and across the vortex flow. The experiments have
been included also the mean velocity measurements making use of a
laser-Doppler anemometry. The features of instantaneous flowfield
generated by the PVC were analyzed employing a commercial CFD
code (Star-CCM+) based on Detached Eddy Simulation (DES)
approach. Validity of the numerical code has been checked by
comparison calculated flowfield data with the obtained experimental
results. It has been confirmed particularly that the CFD code applied
correctly reproduces the flow features.
Abstract: This paper is a numerical investigation of a laminar
isothermal plane two dimensional wall jet. Special attention has been
paid to the effect of the inlet conditions at the nozzle exit on the
hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of the flow. The
behaviour of various fluids evolving in both forced and mixed
convection regimes near a vertical plate plane is carried out. The
system of governing equations is solved with an implicit finite
difference scheme. For numerical stability we use a staggered non
uniform grid. The obtained results show that the effect of the Prandtl
number is significant in the plume region in which the jet flow is
governed by buoyant forces. Further for ascending X values, the
buoyancy forces become dominating, and a certain agreement
between the temperature profiles are observed, which shows that the
velocity profile has no longer influence on the wall temperature
evolution in this region. Fluids with low Prandtl number warm up
more importantly, because for such fluids the effect of heat diffusion
is higher.
Abstract: In this paper, the two-dimension differential transformation method (DTM) is employed to obtain the closed form solutions of the three famous coupled partial differential equation with physical interest namely, the coupled Korteweg-de Vries(KdV) equations, the coupled Burgers equations and coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We begin by showing that how the differential transformation method applies to a linear and non-linear part of any PDEs and apply on these coupled PDEs to illustrate the sufficiency of the method for this kind of nonlinear differential equations. The results obtained are in good agreement with the exact solution. These results show that the technique introduced here is accurate and easy to apply.
Abstract: Injection forging is a Nett-shape manufacturing
process in which one or two punches move axially causing a radial
flow into a die cavity in a form which is prescribed by the exitgeometry,
such as pulley, flanges, gears and splines on a shaft. This
paper presents an experimental and numerical study of the injection
forging of splines in terms of load requirement and material flow.
Three dimensional finite element analyses are used to investigate the
effect of some important parameters in this process. The experiment
has been carried out using solid commercial lead billets with two
different billet diameters and four different dies.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical study on surface heat
transfer characteristics of laminar air flows in parallel-plate dimpled
channels. The two-dimensional numerical model is provided by
commercial code FLUENT and the results are obtained for channels
with symmetrically opposing hemi-cylindrical cavities onto both
walls for Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 2500. The influence
of variations in relative depth of dimples (the ratio of cavity depth to
the cavity curvature diameter), the number of them and the thermophysical
properties of channel walls on heat transfer enhancement is
studied. The results are evident for existence of an optimum value for
the relative depth of dimples in which the largest wall heat flux and
average Nusselt number can be achieved. In addition, the results of
conjugation simulation indicate that the overall influence of the ratio
of wall thermal conductivity to the one of the fluid on heat transfer
rate is not much significant and can be ignored.
Abstract: This article presents a numerical study of the doublediffusive
mixed convection in a vertical channel filled with porous
medium by using non-equilibrium model. The flow is assumed
fully developed, uni-directional and steady state. The controlling
parameters are thermal Rayleigh number (RaT ), Darcy number (Da),
Forchheimer number (F), buoyancy ratio (N), inter phase heat transfer
coefficient (H), and porosity scaled thermal conductivity ratio
(γ). The Brinkman-extended non-Darcy model is considered. The
governing equations are solved by spectral collocation method. The
main emphasize is given on flow profiles as well as heat and solute
transfer rates, when two diffusive components in terms of buoyancy
ratio are in favor (against) of each other and solid matrix and fluid
are thermally non-equilibrium. The results show that, for aiding flow
(RaT = 1000), the heat transfer rate of fluid (Nuf ) increases upto a
certain value of H, beyond that decreases smoothly and converges
to a constant, whereas in case of opposing flow (RaT = -1000),
the result is same for N = 0 and 1. The variation of Nuf in (N,
Nuf )-plane shows sinusoidal pattern for RaT = -1000. For both cases
(aiding and opposing) the flow destabilize on increasing N by inviting
point of inflection or flow separation on the velocity profile. Overall,
the buoyancy force have significant impact on the non-Darcy mixed
convection under LTNE conditions.
Abstract: We studied the evolution of elliptic heavy SF6
gas cylinder surrounded by air when accelerated by a planar
Mach 1.25 shock. A multiple dynamics imaging technology has
been used to obtain one image of the experimental initial
conditions and five images of the time evolution of elliptic
cylinder. We compared the width and height of the circular and
two kinds of elliptic gas cylinders, and analyzed the vortex
strength of the elliptic ones. Simulations are in very good
agreement with the experiments, but due to the different initial
gas cylinder shapes, a certain difference of the initial density
peak and distribution exists between the circular and elliptic
gas cylinders, and the latter initial state is more sensitive and
more inenarrable.
Abstract: The main focus of the work was concerned with hydrodynamic and thermal analysis of the plate heat exchanger channel with corrugation patterns suggested to be triangular, sinusoidal, and square corrugation. This study was to numerically model and validate the triangular corrugated channel with dimensions/parameters taken from open literature, and then model/analyze both sinusoidal, and square corrugated channel referred to the triangular model. Initially, 2D modeling with local extensive analysis for triangular corrugated channel was carried out. By that, all local pressure drop, wall shear stress, friction factor, static temperature, heat flux, Nusselt number, and surface heat coefficient, were analyzed to interpret the hydrodynamic and thermal phenomena occurred in the flow. Furthermore, in order to facilitate confidence in this model, a comparison between the values predicted, and experimental results taken from literature for almost the same case, was done. Moreover, a holistic numerical study for sinusoidal and square channels together with global comparisons with triangular corrugation under the same condition, were handled. Later, a comparison between electric, and fluid cooling through varying the boundary condition was achieved. The constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux boundary conditions were employed, and the different resulted Nusselt numbers as a consequence were justified. The results obtained can be used to come up with an optimal design, a 'compromise' between heat transfer and pressure drop.
Abstract: In this paper, a numerical study has been made to
analyze the transient 2-D flows of a viscous incompressible fluid
through channels with forward or backward constriction. Problems
addressed include flow through sudden contraction and sudden
expansion channel geometries with rounded and increasingly sharp
reentrant corner. In both the cases, numerical results are presented for
the separation and reattachment points, streamlines, vorticity and
flow patterns. A fourth order accurate compact scheme has been
employed to efficiently capture steady state solutions of the
governing equations. It appears from our study that sharpness of the
throat in the channel is one of the important parameters to control the
strength and size of the separation zone without modifying the
general flow patterns. The comparison between the two cases shows
that the upstream geometry plays a significant role on vortex growth
dynamics.
