Abstract: The evaluation of the convective heat transfer of flow in passages with rectangular cross section is still of interest for the heat transfer investigators, as in the air heater solar collectors. The aim of this paper is to present investigation results on the natural convection heat transfer in a solar air heater. The effect of the channel length as heat transfer surface and the inclination of the passage were investigated. The results were obtained experimentally and theoretically. For that, an experimental test rig was fabricated with channel lengths of 1m, 1.5m, and 2m. For each length, the air outlet and inlet temperatures, absorber and cover temperatures, solar radiation intensity and air flow rate were measured at 10o, 30o, 50o, 70o, and 90o tilt angles. Measurements were recorded every 2 hours interval to investigate the transient behavior of the system. The experimental and theoretical results are presented in terms of Nu number versus Ra number and discussed. The percentages of differences between experimental and theoretical results are within the margin of 6% to 13%, effectively. It is recommended to extend the investigation to study the same configurations with different artificial surface roughing by ribs or pins.
Abstract: Fiber cross sectional area value is a crucial factor in determining the strength properties of natural fiber. Furthermore, unlike synthetic fiber, a diameter and cross sectional area of natural fiber has a large variation along and between the fibers. This study aims to determine the main and interaction effects of alkali treatment conditions which influence kenaf bast fiber mean cross sectional area. Three alkali treatment conditions at two different levels were selected. The conditions setting were alkali concentrations at 2 and 10 w/v %; fiber immersed temperature at room temperature and 1000C; and fiber immersed duration for 30 and 480 minutes. Untreated kenaf fiber was used as a control unit. Kenaf bast fiber bundle mounting tab was prepared according to ASTM C1557-03. Cross sectional area was measured using a Leica video analyzer. The study result showed that kenaf fiber bundle mean cross sectional area was reduced 6.77% to 29.88% after alkali treatment. From analysis of variance, it shows that interaction of alkali concentration and immersed time has a higher magnitude at 0.1619 compared to alkali concentration and immersed temperature interaction which was 0.0896. For the main effect, alkali concentration factor contributes to the higher magnitude at 0.1372 which indicated are decrease pattern of variability when the level was change from lower to higher level. Then, it was followed by immersed temperature at 0.1261 and immersed time at 0.0696 magnitudes.
Abstract: Total cross section of helium atom photo-ionization by weak short pulse is calculated using the variant of trajectory method, developed in our earlier work. The method enables simple estimation of total ionization probability (or cross section) without integration of differential one.
Abstract: Comparison of electron- and photon-impact processes as a method for determination of photo-ionization cross sections is described, discussed and shown to have many attractive features.
Abstract: Heat transfer and laminar air flow over a double backward-facing step numerically studied in this paper. The simulations was performed by using ANSYS ICEM for meshing process and using ANSYS fluent 14 (CFD) for solving. The k-ɛ standard model adopted with Reynolds number varied between 98.5 to 512 and three step height at constant heat flux (q=2000 W/m2). The top of wall and bottom of upstream are insulated with bottom of downstream is heated. The results show increase in Nusselt number with increases of Reynolds number for all cases and the maximum of Nusselt number happens at the first step in compared to the second step. Due to increase of cross section area of downstream to generate sudden expansion then Nusselt number decrease but the profile of Nusselt number keep same trend for all cases where increase after the first and second steps. Recirculation region after the first and second steps are denoted by contour of streamline velocity. The higher augmentation of heat transfer rate observed for case 1 at Reynolds number of 512 and heat flux q=2000 W/m2.
Abstract: According to previous studies, some muscles present a non-homogeneous spatial distribution of its muscle fiber types and motor unit types. However, available muscle models only deal with muscles with homogeneous distributions. In this paper, a new architecture muscle model is proposed to permit the construction of non-uniform distributions of muscle fibers within the muscle cross section. The idea behind is the use of a motor unit placement algorithm that controls the spatial overlapping of the motor unit territories of each motor unit type. Results show the capabilities of the new algorithm to reproduce arbitrary muscle fiber type distributions.
Abstract: Coherent and incoherent scattering cross section measurements have been carried out using a HPGe detector on elements in the range of Z = 13 - 50 using 241Am gamma rays. The cross sections have been derived by comparing the net count rate obtained from the Compton peak of aluminium with the corresponding peak of the target. The measured cross sections for the coherent and incoherent processes are compared with theoretical values and earlier reported values. Our results are in agreement with the theoretical values.
Abstract: the aim of that work is to study the proton transfer
phenomenon which takes place in the elastic scattering of 12C on 11B
at energies near the coulomb barrier. This reaction was studied at four
different energies 16, 18, 22, 24 MeV. The experimental data of the
angular distribution at these energies were compared to the
calculation prediction using the optical potential codes such as
ECIS88 and SPIVAL. For the raising in the cross section at backward
angles due to the transfer process we could use Distorted Wave Born
Approximation (DWUCK5). Our analysis showed that SPIVAL code
with l-dependent imaginary potential could be used effectively.
Abstract: This paper describes a computer model of Quantum Field Theory (QFT), referred to in this paper as QTModel. After specifying the initial configuration for a QFT process (e.g. scattering) the model generates the possible applicable processes in terms of Feynman diagrams, the equations for the scattering matrix, and evaluates probability amplitudes for the scattering matrix and cross sections. The computations of probability amplitudes are performed numerically. The equations generated by QTModel are provided for demonstration purposes only. They are not directly used as the base for the computations of probability amplitudes. The computer model supports two modes for the computation of the probability amplitudes: (1) computation according to standard QFT, and (2) computation according to a proposed functional interpretation of quantum theory.
Abstract: This study aims to determine the level of resistance of Hevea brasiliensis and Paraserianthes falcataria (synonym: Falcataria molucana) against wood rot fungi Pleurotus ostreatus based on Indonesian standard SNI 01.7207-2006 and Japanese standard JIS K 1571-2004. The variables measured were visual appearance and weight loss percentage of wood based on longitudinal and cross section fiber directions of rubber wood and sengon wood. Measurement of oven dry weight loss of wood samples performed after 12 weeks incubation. Replication performed was 10 times at each treatment combination. The results based on SNI 01.7207-2006, weight loss value of H. brasiliensis and P. falcataria wood with fiber direction longitudinal were 23,12 and 22,25% respectively and cross section were 20,77 and 18,76% respectively, and all were classified to resistance class IV (no resistance). The results based on JIS K 1571-2004, weight loss value of both woods with fiber direction cross section were 10,95 and 14,20% respectively.
Abstract: In the context of large volume Big Divisor (nearly)
SLagy D3/D7 μ-Split SUSY [1], after an explicit identification
of first generation of SM leptons and quarks with fermionic superpartners
of four Wilson line moduli, we discuss the identification of
gravitino as a potential dark matter candidate by explicitly calculating
the decay life times of gravitino (LSP) to be greater than age of
universe and lifetimes of decays of the co-NLSPs (the first generation
squark/slepton and a neutralino) to the LSP (the gravitino) to be
very small to respect BBN constraints. Interested in non-thermal
production mechanism of gravitino, we evaluate the relic abundance
of gravitino LSP in terms of that of the co-NLSP-s by evaluating
their (co-)annihilation cross sections and hence show that the former
satisfies the requirement for a potential Dark Matter candidate. We
also show that it is possible to obtain a 125 GeV light Higgs in our
setup.
Abstract: The paper presents the results of theoretical and
numerical modeling of propagation of shock waves in bubbly liquids
related to nonlinear effects (realistic equation of state, chemical
reactions, two-dimensional effects). On the basis on the Rankine-
Hugoniot equations the problem of determination of parameters of
passing and reflected shock waves in gas-liquid medium for
isothermal, adiabatic and shock compression of the gas component is
solved by using the wide-range equation of state of water in the
analitic form. The phenomenon of shock wave intensification is
investigated in the channel of variable cross section for the
propagation of a shock wave in the liquid filled with bubbles
containing chemically active gases. The results of modeling of the
wave impulse impact on the solid wall covered with bubble layer are
presented.
Abstract: In this paper, the absorption and fluorescence
emission spectra of Yb:Y3Al5O12 (YAG)(25 at%) crystal as a disk
laser medium are measured at high temperature (300-450K). The
absorption and emission cross sections of Yb:YAG crystal are
determined using Reciprocity method. Temperature dependence of
941nm absorption cross section and 1031nm emission cross section
is extracted in the range of 300-450K. According to our experimental
results, an exponential temperature dependence between 300K and
450K is acquired for the 1031nm peak emission cross section and
also for 941nm peak absorption cross section of Yb:YAG crystal.
These results could be used for simulation and design of high power
highly doped Yb:YAG thin disk lasers.
Abstract: During the process of compaction in Hot-Mix Asphalt
(HMA) mixtures, the distance between aggregate particles decreases
as they come together and eliminate air-voids. By measuring the
inter-particle distances in a cut-section of a HMA sample the degree
of compaction can be estimated. For this, a calibration curve is
generated by computer simulation technique when the gradation and
asphalt content of the HMA mixture are known. A two-dimensional
cross section of HMA specimen was simulated using the mixture
design information (gradation, asphalt content and air-void content).
Nearest neighbor distance methods such as Delaunay triangulation
were used to study the changes in inter-particle distance and area
distribution during the process of compaction in HMA. Such
computer simulations would enable making several hundreds of
repetitions in a short period of time without the necessity to compact
and analyze laboratory specimens in order to obtain good statistics on
the parameters defined. The distributions for the statistical
parameters based on computer simulations showed similar trends as
those of laboratory specimens.
Abstract: In this paper, fully developed flow and heat transfer of
viscoelastic materials in curved ducts with square cross section under
constant heat flux have been investigated. Here, staggered mesh is
used as computational grids and flow and heat transfer parameters
have been allocated in this mesh with marker and cell method.
Numerical solution of governing equations has being performed with
FTCS finite difference method. Furthermore, Criminale-Eriksen-
Filbey (CEF) constitutive equation has being used as viscoelastic
model. CEF constitutive equation is a suitable model for studying
steady shear flow of viscoelastic materials which is able to model
both effects of the first and second normal stress differences. Here, it
is shown that the first and second normal stresses differences have
noticeable and inverse effect on secondary flows intensity and mean
Nusselt number which is the main novelty of current research.

Abstract: This paper presents the design, development and characterization of contractile water jet thruster (CWJT) for mini underwater robot. Instead of electric motor, this CWJT utilizes the Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) as the actuator to generate the water jet. The main focus of this paper is to analyze the conceptual design of the proposed CWJT which would determine the thrust force value, jet flow behavior and actuator’s stress. Those thrust force and jet flow studies were carried out using Matlab/Simscape simulation software. The actuator stress had been analyzed using COSMOS simulation software. The results showed that there was no significant change for jet velocity at variable cross sectional nozzle area. However, a significant change was detected for jet velocity at different nozzle cross sectional area ratio which was up to 37%. The generated thrust force has proportional relation to the nozzle cross sectional area.
Abstract: This study was aimed for investigating of
manufacturing high aluminum content Mg alloys using a horizontal
twin roll caster. Recently, weight saving has been key issues for lighter
transport equipments as well as electronic component parts. As
alternative materials to aluminum alloys, developing magnesium alloy
with higher strength has been expected. Normally high Aluminum
content Mg alloy has poor ductility and is difficult to be rolled because
of its high strength. However, twin roll casting process is suitable for
manufacturing wrought Mg alloys because materials can be cast
directly from molten metal. In this study, manufacturing of high
aluminum content magnesium alloy sheet using the roll casting
process has been carried out. Effects of manufacturing parameter, such
as roll velocity, pouring temperature and roll gap, on casting was
investigated. A microscopic observation of the crystals of cross section
of as cast strip as well as rolled strip was conducted.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of cross sectional
geometry on sediment transport rate. The processes of sediment
transport are generally associated to environmental management,
such as pollution caused by the forming of suspended sediment in the
channel network of a watershed and preserving physical habitats and
native vegetations, and engineering applications, such as the
influence of sediment transport on hydraulic structures and flood
control design. Many equations have been proposed for computing
the sediment transport, the influence of many variables on sediment
transport has been understood; however, the effect of other variables
still requires further research. For open channel flow, sediment
transport capacity is recognized to be a function of friction slope,
flow velocity, grain size, grain roughness and form roughness, the
hydraulic radius of the bed section and the type and quantity of
vegetation cover. The effect of cross sectional geometry of the
channel on sediment transport is one of the variables that need
additional investigation. The width-depth ratio (W/d) is a
comparative indicator of the channel shape. The width is the total
distance across the channel and the depth is the mean depth of the
channel. The mean depth is best calculated as total cross-sectional
area divided by the top width. Channels with high W/d ratios tend to
be shallow and wide, while channels with low (W/d) ratios tend to be
narrow and deep. In this study, the effects of the width-depth ratio on
sediment transport was demonstrated theoretically by inserting the
shape factor in sediment continuity equation and analytically by
utilizing the field data sets for Yalobusha River. It was found by
utilizing the two approaches as a width-depth ratio increases the
sediment transport decreases.
Abstract: Among many different methods that are used for
optimizing different engineering problems mathematical (numerical)
optimization techniques are very important because they can easily
be used and are consistent with most of engineering problems. Many
studies and researches are done on stability analysis of three
dimensional (3D) slopes and the relating probable slip surfaces and
determination of factors of safety, but in most of them force
equilibrium equations, as in simplified 2D methods, are considered
only in two directions. In other words for decreasing mathematical
calculations and also for simplifying purposes the force equilibrium
equation in 3rd direction is omitted. This point is considered in just a
few numbers of previous studies and most of them have only given a
factor of safety and they haven-t made enough effort to find the most
probable slip surface. In this study shapes of the slip surfaces are
modeled, and safety factors are calculated considering the force
equilibrium equations in all three directions, and also the moment
equilibrium equation is satisfied in the slip direction, and using
nonlinear programming techniques the shape of the most probable
slip surface is determined. The model which is used in this study is a
3D model that is composed of three upper surfaces which can cover
all defined and probable slip surfaces. In this research the meshing
process is done in a way that all elements are prismatic with
quadrilateral cross sections, and the safety factor is defined on this
quadrilateral surface in the base of the element which is a part of the
whole slip surface. The method that is used in this study to find the
most probable slip surface is the non-linear programming method in
which the objective function that must get optimized is the factor of
safety that is a function of the soil properties and the coordinates of
the nodes on the probable slip surface. The main reason for using
non-linear programming method in this research is its quick
convergence to the desired responses. The final results show a good
compatibility with the previously used classical and 2D methods and
also show a reasonable convergence speed.
