Abstract: An envy behavioral game theoretical model with two
types of homogeneous players is considered in this paper. The
strategy space of each type of players is a discrete set with only
two alternatives. The preferences of each type of players is given
by a discrete utility function. All envy strategies that form Nash
equilibria and the corresponding envy Nash domains for each type
of players have been characterized. We use geometry to construct
two dimensional envy tilings where the horizontal axis reflects the
preference for players of type one, while the vertical axis reflects
the preference for the players of type two. The influence of the envy
behavior parameters on the Cartesian position of the equilibria has
been studied, and in each envy tiling we determine the envy Nash
equilibria. We observe that there are 1024 combinatorial classes of
envy tilings generated from envy chromosomes: 256 of them are
being structurally stable while 768 are with bifurcation. Finally, some
conditions for the disparate envy Nash equilibria are stated.
Abstract: We have designed a Holter that measures the heart´s activity for over 24 hours, implemented a prediction methodology, and generate alarms as well as indicators to patients and treating physicians. Various diagnostic advances have been developed in clinical cardiology thanks to Holter implementation; however, their interpretation has largely been conditioned to clinical analysis and measurements adjusted to diverse population characteristics, thus turning it into a subjective examination. This, however, requires vast population studies to be validated that, in turn, have not achieved the ultimate goal: mortality prediction. Given this context, our Insight Research Group developed a mathematical methodology that assesses cardiac dynamics through entropy and probability, creating a numerical and geometrical attractor which allows quantifying the normalcy of chronic and acute disease as well as the evolution between such states, and our Tigum Research Group developed a holter device with 12 channels and advanced computer software. This has been shown in different contexts with 100% sensitivity and specificity results.
Abstract: With the advocacy of green transportation and green traveling, cycling has become increasingly popular nowadays. Physiology and bike design are key factors for the influence of cycling efficiency. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the significance of bike-frame geometric factors on cycling efficiency and muscle activation for different body sizes of non-professional Asian male cyclists. Participants who represented various body sizes, as measured by leg and back lengths, carried out cycling tests using a tailor-assembled road bike with different ergonomic design configurations including seat-height adjustments (i.e., 96%, 100%, and 104% of trochanteric height) and bike frame sizes (i.e., small and medium frames) for an assessable distance of 1 km. A specific power meter and self-developed adaptable surface electromyography (sEMG) were used to measure average pedaling power and cadence generated and muscle activation, respectively. The results showed that changing the seat height was far more significant than the body and bike frame sizes. The sEMG data evidently provided a better understanding of muscle activation as a function of different seat heights. Therefore, the interpretation of this study is that the major bike ergonomic design factor dominating the cycling efficiency of Asian participants with different body sizes was the seat height.
Abstract: The present study deals with the finite element (FE) analysis of thermally-induced bistable plate using various plate elements. The quadrilateral plate elements include the 4-node conforming plate element based on the classical laminate plate theory (CLPT), the 4-node and 9-node Mindlin plate element based on the first-order shear deformation laminated plate theory (FSDT), and a displacement-based 4-node quadrilateral element (RDKQ-NL20). Using the von-Karman’s large deflection theory and the total Lagrangian (TL) approach, the nonlinear FE governing equations for plate under thermal load are derived. Convergence analysis for four elements is first conducted. These elements are then used to predict the stable shapes of thermally-induced bistable plate. Numerical test shows that the plate element based on FSDT, namely the 4-node and 9-node Mindlin, and the RDKQ-NL20 plate element can predict two stable cylindrical shapes while the 4-node conforming plate predicts a saddles shape. Comparing the simulation results with ABAQUS, the RDKQ-NL20 element shows the best accuracy among all the elements.
Abstract: Vendor (supplier) selection is a group decision-making (GDM) process, in which, based on some predetermined criteria, the experts’ preferences are provided in order to rank and choose the most desirable suppliers. In the real business environment, our attitudes or our choices would be made in an uncertain and indecisive situation could not be expressed in a crisp framework. Intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs) could handle such situations in the best way. VIKOR method was developed to solve multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. This method, which is used to determine the compromised feasible solution with respect to the conflicting criteria, introduces a multi-criteria ranking index based on the particular measure of 'closeness' to the 'ideal solution'. Until now, there has been a little investigation of VIKOR with IFS, therefore we extended the intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) VIKOR to solve vendor selection problem under IF GDM environment. The present study intends to develop an IF VIKOR method in a GDM situation. Therefore, a model is presented to calculate the criterion weights based on entropy measure. Then, the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted geometric (IFWG) operator utilized to obtain the total decision matrix. In the next stage, an approach based on the positive idle intuitionistic fuzzy number (PIIFN) and negative idle intuitionistic fuzzy number (NIIFN) was developed. Finally, the application of the proposed method to solve a vendor selection problem illustrated.
Abstract: In this paper, natural convection in an attic is numerically investigated. The geometry of the problem is considered to be a triangular enclosure. ANSYS Fluent software is used for modeling and numerical solution. This study is for steady state. Four right-angled triangles with height to base ratios of 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.25 are considered. The behavior of various parameters related to its performance, including temperature distribution and velocity vectors are evaluated, and graphs for the Nusselt number have been drawn. Also, in this study, the effect of geometric shape of enclosure with different height-to-base ratios has been evaluated for three types of boundary conditions of winter, summer day and one another state. It can be concluded that as the bottom side temperature and ratio of base to height of the enclosure increases, the convective effects become more prominent and circulation happened.
Abstract: Purge columns or degasser vessels are widely used in the polyolefin process for removing trapped hydrocarbons and in-excess catalyst residues from the polymer particles. A uniform distribution of purged gases coupled with a plug-flow characteristic inside the column system is desirable to obtain optimum desorption characteristics of trapped hydrocarbon and catalyst residues. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is a promising tool for design optimization of these vessels. The success of this approach is profoundly dependent on the solution strategy and the choice of geometrical layout at the vessel outlet. Filling the column with solids and initially solving for the solids flow minimized numerical diffusion substantially. Adopting a cylindrical configuration at the vessel outlet resulted in less numerical instability and resembled the hydrodynamics flow of solids in the hopper segment reasonably well.
Abstract: In this paper, we have considered Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with generalized Chaplygin gas which has viscosity in the context of Lyra geometry. The viscosity is considered in two different ways (i.e. zero viscosity, non-constant r (rho)-dependent bulk viscosity) using constant deceleration parameter which concluded that, for a special case, the viscous generalized Chaplygin gas reduces to modified Chaplygin gas. The represented model indicates on the presence of Chaplygin gas in the Universe. Observational constraints are applied and discussed on the physical and geometrical nature of the Universe.
Abstract: In this paper, a basic schematic of fractional dimensional optimization problem is presented. As will be shown, a method is performed based on a relation between roots and tangent lines of function in fractional dimensions for an arbitrary initial point. It is shown that for each polynomial function with order N at least N tangent lines must be existed in fractional dimensions of 0 < α < N+1 which pass exactly through the all roots of the proposed function. Geometrical analysis of tangent lines in fractional dimensions is also presented to clarify more intuitively the proposed method. Results show that with an appropriate selection of fractional dimensions, we can directly find the roots. Method is presented for giving a different direction of optimization problems by the use of fractional dimensions.
Abstract: Geometric modeling plays an important role in the
constructions and manufacturing of curve, surface and solid
modeling. Their algorithms are critically important not only in
the automobile, ship and aircraft manufacturing business, but are
also absolutely necessary in a wide variety of modern applications,
e.g., robotics, optimization, computer vision, data analytics and
visualization. The calculation and display of geometric objects
can be accomplished by these six techniques: Polynomial basis,
Recursive, Iterative, Coefficient matrix, Polar form approach and
Pyramidal algorithms. In this research, the coefficient matrix (simply
called monomial form approach) will be used to model polynomial
rectangular patches, i.e., Said-Ball, Wang-Ball, DP, Dejdumrong and
NB1 surfaces. Some examples of the monomial forms for these
surface modeling are illustrated in many aspects, e.g., construction,
derivatives, model transformation, degree elevation and degress
reduction.
Abstract: Newton-Lagrange Interpolations are widely used in
numerical analysis. However, it requires a quadratic computational
time for their constructions. In computer aided geometric design
(CAGD), there are some polynomial curves: Wang-Ball, DP and
Dejdumrong curves, which have linear time complexity algorithms.
Thus, the computational time for Newton-Lagrange Interpolations
can be reduced by applying the algorithms of Wang-Ball, DP and
Dejdumrong curves. In order to use Wang-Ball, DP and Dejdumrong
algorithms, first, it is necessary to convert Newton-Lagrange
polynomials into Wang-Ball, DP or Dejdumrong polynomials. In
this work, the algorithms for converting from both uniform and
non-uniform Newton-Lagrange polynomials into Wang-Ball, DP and
Dejdumrong polynomials are investigated. Thus, the computational
time for representing Newton-Lagrange polynomials can be reduced
into linear complexity. In addition, the other utilizations of using
CAGD curves to modify the Newton-Lagrange curves can be taken.
Abstract: High cycle fatigue comprising up to 107 load cycles has been the subject of many studies, and the behavior of many materials was recorded adequately in this regime. However, many applications involve larger numbers of load cycles during the lifetime of machine components. In this ultra-high cycle regime, other failure mechanisms play, and the concept of a fatigue endurance limit (assumed for materials such as steel) is often an oversimplification of reality. When machine component design demands a high geometrical complexity, cast iron grades become interesting candidate materials. Grey cast iron is known for its low cost, high compressive strength, and good damping properties. However, the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of cast iron is poorly documented. The current work focuses on the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of EN-GJL-250 (GG25) grey cast iron by developing an ultrasonic (20 kHz) fatigue testing system. Moreover, the testing machine is instrumented to measure the temperature and the displacement of the specimen, and to control the temperature. The high resonance frequency allowed to assess the behavior of the cast iron of interest within a matter of days for ultra-high numbers of cycles, and repeat the tests to quantify the natural scatter in fatigue resistance.
Abstract: Tracking sports players is a widely challenging
scenario, specially in single-feed videos recorded in tight courts,
where cluttering and occlusions cannot be avoided. This paper
presents an analysis of several geometric and semantic visual features
to detect and track basketball players. An ablation study is carried
out and then used to remark that a robust tracker can be built with
Deep Learning features, without the need of extracting contextual
ones, such as proximity or color similarity, nor applying camera
stabilization techniques. The presented tracker consists of: (1) a
detection step, which uses a pretrained deep learning model to
estimate the players pose, followed by (2) a tracking step, which
leverages pose and semantic information from the output of a
convolutional layer in a VGG network. Its performance is analyzed
in terms of MOTA over a basketball dataset with more than 10k
instances.
Abstract: This research presents an analytical model for the development of an energy harvester with piezoelectric rings stacked at the boundary of the structure based on the Adomian decomposition method. The model is applied to geometrically non-uniform beams to derive the steady-state dynamic response of the structure subjected to base motion excitation and efficiently harvest the subsequent vibrational energy. The in-plane polarization of the piezoelectric rings is employed to enhance the electrical power output. A parametric study for the proposed energy harvester with various design parameters is done to prepare the dataset required for optimization. Finally, simulation-based optimization technique helps to find the optimum structural design with maximum efficiency. To solve the optimization problem, an artificial neural network is first trained to replace the simulation model, and then, a genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimized design variables. Higher geometrical non-uniformity and length of the beam lowers the structure natural frequency and generates a larger power output.
Abstract: Given the evolution of viaducts, structural health monitoring requires more complex techniques to define their state. two alternatives can be distinguished: experimental and operational modal analysis. Although accelerometers or Global Positioning System (GPS) have been applied for the monitoring of structures under exploitation, the dynamic monitoring during the stage of construction is not common. This research analyzes whether GPS data can be applied to certain dynamic geometric controls of evolving structures. The fundamentals of this work were applied to the New Bridge of Cádiz (Spain), a worldwide milestone in bridge building. GPS data were recorded with an interval of 1 second during the erection of segments and turned to the frequency domain with Fourier transform. The vibration period and amplitude were contrasted with those provided by the finite element model, with differences of less than 10%, which is admissible. This process provides a vibration record of the structure with GPS, avoiding specific equipment.
Abstract: While the use of cast-in-place concrete for an airfield and highway pavement overlay is very common, the application of precast concrete elements is very limited today. The main reasons consist of high production costs and complex structural behavior. Despite that, several precast concrete systems have been developed and tested with the aim to provide a system with rapid construction. The contribution deals with the reinforcement design of a hexagonal element developed for a proposed airfield pavement system. The sub-base course of the system is composed of compacted recycled concrete aggregates and fiber reinforced concrete with recycled aggregates place on top of it. The selected element belongs to a group of precast concrete elements which are being considered for the construction of a surface course. Both high costs of full-scale experiments and the need to investigate various elements force to simulate their behavior in a numerical analysis software by using finite element method instead of performing expensive experiments. The simulation of the selected element was conducted on a nonlinear model in order to obtain such results which could fully compensate results from experiments. The main objective was to design reinforcement of the precast concrete element subject to quasi-static loading from airplanes with respect to geometrical imperfections, manufacturing imperfections, tensile stress in reinforcement, compressive stress in concrete and crack width. The obtained findings demonstrate that the position and the presence of imperfection in a pavement highly affect the stress distribution in the precast concrete element. The precast concrete element should be heavily reinforced to fulfill all the demands. Using under-reinforced concrete elements would lead to the formation of wide cracks and cracks permanently open.
Abstract: Site response has a profound effect on earthquake damages. Seismic interaction of urban tunnels with surface structures could also affect seismic site response. Here, we use FLAC 2D to investigate the interaction of a single tunnel and twin tunnels-surface structures on the site response. Soil stratification and properties are selected based on Line. No 7 of the Tehran subway. The effect of surface structure is considered in two ways: Equivalent surcharge and geometrical modeling of the structure. Comparison of the results shows that consideration of the structure geometry is vital in dynamic analysis and leads to the changes in the magnitude of displacements, accelerations and response spectrum. Therefore it is necessary for the surface structures to be wholly modeled and not just considered as a surcharge in dynamic analysis. The use of twin tunnel also leads to the reduction of dynamic residual settlement.
Abstract: This article presents a study of the effect of
a contra-rotating component on the efficiency of centrifugal
compressors. A contra-rotating centrifugal compressor (CRCC) is
constructed using two independent rotors, rotating in the opposite
direction and replacing the single rotor of a conventional centrifugal
compressor (REF). To respect the geometrical parameters of the REF
one, two rotors of the CRCC are designed, based on a single rotor
geometry, using the hub and shroud length ratio parameter of the
meridional contour. Firstly, the first rotor is designed by choosing
a value of length ratio. Then, the second rotor is calculated to be
adapted to the fluid flow of the first rotor according aerodynamics
principles. In this study, four values of length ratios 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and
0.6 are used to create four configurations CF1, CF2, CF3, and CF4
respectively. For comparison purpose, the circumferential velocity at
the outlet of the REF and the CRCC are preserved, which means that
the single rotor of the REF and the second rotor of the CRCC rotate
with the same speed of 16000rpm. The speed of the first rotor in this
case is chosen to be equal to the speed of the second rotor. The CFD
simulation is conducted to compare the performance of the CRCC
and the REF with the same boundary conditions. The results show
that the configuration with a higher length ratio gives higher pressure
rise. However, its efficiency is lower. An investigation over the entire
operating range shows that the CF1 is the best configuration in this
case. In addition, the CRCC can improve the pressure rise as well
as the efficiency by changing the speed of each rotor independently.
The results of changing the first rotor speed show with a 130% speed
increase, the pressure ratio rises of 8.7% while the efficiency remains
stable at the flow rate of the design operating point.
Abstract: For scarf inlet design, the primary variable of interest is the circumferential extent over which the extended lower lip is formed. In this paper, an attempt has been made to optimize the aerodynamic shape of a subsonic scarf inlet with aerodynamically shaped center-body with a particular value of the circumferential extent. The parametric analytical studies have been carried out using a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. From our preliminary studies, we concluded that for a particular value of circumferential extent, there will be an exact shape of the center-body with certain geometric orientation for the existence of an aerodynamically efficient scarf inlet for modern aircraft engines. This numerical study is a pointer towards for the design optimization of scarf inlets for modern aircraft engines.
Abstract: Efficiency of the cooling process for cryogenic
propellant boiling in engine cooling channels on space applications is
relentlessly affected by the phase change occurs during the boiling.
The effectiveness of the cooling process strongly pertains to the
type of the boiling regime such as nucleate and film. Geometric
constraints like a non-transparent cooling channel unable to use
any of visualization methods. The ultrasonic (US) technique as a
non-destructive method (NDT) has therefore been applied almost
in every engineering field for different purposes. Basically, the
discontinuities emerge between mediums like boundaries among
different phases. The sound wave emitted by the US transducer is
both transmitted and reflected through a gas-liquid interface which
makes able to detect different phases. Due to the thermal and
structural concerns, it is impractical to sustain a direct contact
between the US transducer and working fluid. Hence the transducer
should be located outside of the cooling channel which results in
additional interfaces and creates ambiguities on the applicability
of the present method. In this work, an exploratory research is
prompted so as to determine detection ability and applicability of
the US technique on the cryogenic boiling process for a cooling
cycle where the US transducer is taken place outside of the channel.
Boiling of the cryogenics is a complex phenomenon which mainly
brings several hindrances for experimental protocol because of
thermal properties. Thus substitute materials are purposefully selected
based on such parameters to simplify experiments. Aside from
that, nucleate and film boiling regimes emerging during the boiling
process are simply simulated using non-deformable stainless steel
balls, air-bubble injection apparatuses and air clearances instead
of conducting a real-time boiling process. A versatile detection
algorithm is perennially developed concerning exploratory studies
afterward. According to the algorithm developed, the phases can be
distinguished 99% as no-phase, air-bubble, and air-film presences.
The results show the detection ability and applicability of the US
technique for an exploratory purpose.
