Abstract: In this study, a Loop Back Algorithm for component
connected labeling for detecting objects in a digital image is
presented. The approach is using loop back connected component
labeling algorithm that helps the system to distinguish the object
detected according to their label. Deferent than whole window
scanning technique, this technique reduces the searching time for
locating the object by focusing on the suspected object based on
certain features defined. In this study, the approach was also
implemented for a face detection system. Face detection system is
becoming interesting research since there are many devices or
systems that require detecting the face for certain purposes. The input
can be from still image or videos, therefore the sub process of this
system has to be simple, efficient and accurate to give a good result.
Abstract: This paper presents a new color face image database
for benchmarking of automatic face detection algorithms and human
skin segmentation techniques. It is named the VT-AAST image
database, and is divided into four parts. Part one is a set of 286 color
photographs that include a total of 1027 faces in the original format
given by our digital cameras, offering a wide range of difference in
orientation, pose, environment, illumination, facial expression and
race. Part two contains the same set in a different file format. The
third part is a set of corresponding image files that contain human
colored skin regions resulting from a manual segmentation
procedure. The fourth part of the database has the same regions
converted into grayscale. The database is available on-line for
noncommercial use. In this paper, descriptions of the database
development, organization, format as well as information needed for
benchmarking of algorithms are depicted in detail.
Abstract: A new approach for facial expressions recognition based on face context and adaptively weighted sub-pattern PCA (Aw-SpPCA) has been presented in this paper. The facial region and others part of the body have been segmented from the complex environment based on skin color model. An algorithm has been proposed to accurate detection of face region from the segmented image based on constant ratio of height and width of face (δ= 1.618). The paper also discusses on new concept to detect the eye and mouth position. The desired part of the face has been cropped to analysis the expression of a person. Unlike PCA based on a whole image pattern, Aw-SpPCA operates directly on its sub patterns partitioned from an original whole pattern and separately extracts features from them. Aw-SpPCA can adaptively compute the contributions of each part and a classification task in order to enhance the robustness to both expression and illumination variations. Experiments on single standard face with five types of facial expression database shows that the proposed method is competitive.
Abstract: Automatic face detection is a complex problem in
image processing. Many methods exist to solve this problem such as
template matching, Fisher Linear Discriminate, Neural Networks,
SVM, and MRC. Success has been achieved with each method to
varying degrees and complexities. In proposed algorithm we used
upright, frontal faces for single gray scale images with decent
resolution and under good lighting condition. In the field of face
recognition technique the single face is matched with single face
from the training dataset. The author proposed a neural network
based face detection algorithm from the photographs as well as if any
test data appears it check from the online scanned training dataset.
Experimental result shows that the algorithm detected up to 95%
accuracy for any image.
Abstract: Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has many
different important applications especially in pattern detection
such as face detection / recognition. Therefore, for real time
applications, the response time is required to be as small as
possible. In this paper, new implementation of PCA for fast
face detection is presented. Such new implementation is
designed based on cross correlation in the frequency domain
between the input image and eigenvectors (weights).
Simulation results show that the proposed implementation of
PCA is faster than conventional one.
Abstract: Because of increasing demands for security in today-s
society and also due to paying much more attention to machine
vision, biometric researches, pattern recognition and data retrieval in
color images, face detection has got more application. In this article
we present a scientific approach for modeling human skin color, and
also offer an algorithm that tries to detect faces within color images
by combination of skin features and determined threshold in the
model. Proposed model is based on statistical data in different color
spaces. Offered algorithm, using some specified color threshold, first,
divides image pixels into two groups: skin pixel group and non-skin
pixel group and then based on some geometric features of face
decides which area belongs to face.
Two main results that we received from this research are as follow:
first, proposed model can be applied easily on different databases and
color spaces to establish proper threshold. Second, our algorithm can
adapt itself with runtime condition and its results demonstrate
desirable progress in comparison with similar cases.

Abstract: Face detection and recognition has many applications
in a variety of fields such as security system, videoconferencing and
identification. Face classification is currently implemented in
software. A hardware implementation allows real-time processing,
but has higher cost and time to-market.
The objective of this work is to implement a classifier based on
neural networks MLP (Multi-layer Perceptron) for face detection.
The MLP is used to classify face and non-face patterns. The systm is
described using C language on a P4 (2.4 Ghz) to extract weight
values. Then a Hardware implementation is achieved using VHDL
based Methodology. We target Xilinx FPGA as the implementation
support.
Abstract: The colors of the human skin represent a special
category of colors, because they are distinctive from the colors of
other natural objects. This category is found as a cluster in color
spaces, and the skin color variations between people are mostly due
to differences in the intensity. Besides, the face detection based on
skin color detection is a faster method as compared to other
techniques. In this work, we present a system to track faces by
carrying out skin color detection in four different color spaces: HSI,
YCbCr, YES and RGB. Once some skin color regions have been
detected for each color space, we label each and get some
characteristics such as size and position. We are supposing that a face
is located in one the detected regions. Next, we compare and employ
a polling strategy between labeled regions to determine the final
region where the face effectively has been detected and located.
Abstract: To increase reliability of face recognition system, the
system must be able to distinguish real face from a copy of face such
as a photograph. In this paper, we propose a fast and memory efficient
method of live face detection for embedded face recognition system,
based on the analysis of the movement of the eyes. We detect eyes in
sequential input images and calculate variation of each eye region to
determine whether the input face is a real face or not. Experimental
results show that the proposed approach is competitive and promising
for live face detection.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach to perform the
problem of real-time face detection. The proposed method combines
primitive Haar-Like feature and variance value to construct a new
feature, so-called Variance based Haar-Like feature. Face in image
can be represented with a small quantity of features using this
new feature. We used SVM instead of AdaBoost for training and
classification. We made a database containing 5,000 face samples
and 10,000 non-face samples extracted from real images for learning
purposed. The 5,000 face samples contain many images which have
many differences of light conditions. And experiments showed that
face detection system using Variance based Haar-Like feature and
SVM can be much more efficient than face detection system using
primitive Haar-Like feature and AdaBoost. We tested our method on
two Face databases and one Non-Face database. We have obtained
96.17% of correct detection rate on YaleB face database, which is
higher 4.21% than that of using primitive Haar-Like feature and
AdaBoost.
Abstract: In modern human computer interaction systems
(HCI), emotion recognition is becoming an imperative characteristic.
The quest for effective and reliable emotion recognition in HCI has
resulted in a need for better face detection, feature extraction and
classification. In this paper we present results of feature space analysis
after briefly explaining our fully automatic vision based emotion
recognition method. We demonstrate the compactness of the feature
space and show how the 2d/3d based method achieves superior features
for the purpose of emotion classification. Also it is exposed that
through feature normalization a widely person independent feature
space is created. As a consequence, the classifier architecture has
only a minor influence on the classification result. This is particularly
elucidated with the help of confusion matrices. For this purpose
advanced classification algorithms, such as Support Vector Machines
and Artificial Neural Networks are employed, as well as the simple k-
Nearest Neighbor classifier.
Abstract: Skin color based tracking techniques often assume a
static skin color model obtained either from an offline set of library
images or the first few frames of a video stream. These models
can show a weak performance in presence of changing lighting or
imaging conditions. We propose an adaptive skin color model based
on the Gaussian mixture model to handle the changing conditions.
Initial estimation of the number and weights of skin color clusters
are obtained using a modified form of the general Expectation
maximization algorithm, The model adapts to changes in imaging
conditions and refines the model parameters dynamically using spatial
and temporal constraints. Experimental results show that the method
can be used in effectively tracking of hand and face regions.
Abstract: Although Face detection is not a recent activity in the
field of image processing, it is still an open area for research. The
greatest step in this field is the work reported by Viola and its recent
analogous is Huang et al. Both of them use similar features and also
similar training process. The former is just for detecting upright
faces, but the latter can detect multi-view faces in still grayscale
images using new features called 'sparse feature'. Finding these
features is very time consuming and inefficient by proposed methods.
Here, we propose a new approach for finding sparse features using a
genetic algorithm system. This method requires less computational
cost and gets more effective features in learning process for face
detection that causes more accuracy.
Abstract: Current systems for face recognition techniques often
use either SVM or Adaboost techniques for face detection part and use
PCA for face recognition part. In this paper, we offer a novel method
for not only a powerful face detection system based on
Six-segment-filters (SSR) and Adaboost learning algorithms but also
for a face recognition system. A new exclusive face detection
algorithm has been developed and connected with the recognition
algorithm. As a result of it, we obtained an overall high-system
performance compared with current systems. The proposed algorithm
was tested on CMU, FERET, UNIBE, MIT face databases and
significant performance has obtained.
Abstract: Recently, fast neural networks for object/face
detection were presented in [1-3]. The speed up factor of these
networks relies on performing cross correlation in the frequency
domain between the input image and the weights of the hidden
layer. But, these equations given in [1-3] for conventional and fast
neural networks are not valid for many reasons presented here. In
this paper, correct equations for cross correlation in the spatial and
frequency domains are presented. Furthermore, correct formulas for
the number of computation steps required by conventional and fast
neural networks given in [1-3] are introduced. A new formula for
the speed up ratio is established. Also, corrections for the equations
of fast multi scale object/face detection are given. Moreover,
commutative cross correlation is achieved. Simulation results show
that sub-image detection based on cross correlation in the frequency
domain is faster than classical neural networks.
Abstract: In the past years a lot of effort has been made in the
field of face detection. The human face contains important features
that can be used by vision-based automated systems in order to
identify and recognize individuals. Face location, the primary step of
the vision-based automated systems, finds the face area in the input
image. An accurate location of the face is still a challenging task.
Viola-Jones framework has been widely used by researchers in order
to detect the location of faces and objects in a given image. Face
detection classifiers are shared by public communities, such as
OpenCV. An evaluation of these classifiers will help researchers to
choose the best classifier for their particular need. This work focuses
of the evaluation of face detection classifiers minding facial
landmarks.
Abstract: This paper proposes a technique to block adult images displayed in websites. The filter is designed so as to perform even in exceptional cases such as, where face detection is not possible or improper face visibility. This is achieved by using an alternative phase to extract the MFC (Most Frequent Color) from the Human Body regions estimated using a biometric of anthropometric distances between fixed rigidly connected body locations. The logical results generated can be protected from overriding by a firewall or intrusion, by encrypting the result in a SSH data packet.
Abstract: We propose a fast and robust hierarchical face detection system which finds and localizes face images with a cascade of classifiers. Three modules contribute to the efficiency of our detector. First, heterogeneous feature descriptors are exploited to enrich feature types and feature numbers for face representation. Second, a PSO-Adaboost algorithm is proposed to efficiently select discriminative features from a large pool of available features and reinforce them into the final ensemble classifier. Compared with the standard exhaustive Adaboost for feature selection, the new PSOAdaboost algorithm reduces the training time up to 20 times. Finally, a three-stage hierarchical classifier framework is developed for rapid background removal. In particular, candidate face regions are detected more quickly by using a large size window in the first stage. Nonlinear SVM classifiers are used instead of decision stump functions in the last stage to remove those remaining complex nonface patterns that can not be rejected in the previous two stages. Experimental results show our detector achieves superior performance on the CMU+MIT frontal face dataset.
