Abstract: Fats and oils are made of esterified hydrocarbons
(RCOOR-) and this work demonstrates the substitution of R by
multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs). The resultant materials are fluidic, oily,
electrically conducting and excellent lubricants. Esterified MWNTs
can also respond to magnetic field when tubules contain long segments
of Fe
Abstract: Today with the rapid growth of telecommunications equipment, electronic and developing more and more networks of power, influence of electromagnetic waves on one another has become hot topic discussions. So in this article, this issue and appropriate mechanisms for EMC operations have been presented. First, impact of high voltage lines on the surrounding environment especially on the control room has been investigated, then to reduce electromagnetic radiation, various methods of shielding are provided and shielding effectiveness of them has been compared. It should be expressed that simulations have been done by the finite element method (FEM).
Abstract: Information is increasing in volumes; companies are overloaded with information that they may lose track in getting the intended information. It is a time consuming task to scan through each of the lengthy document. A shorter version of the document which contains only the gist information is more favourable for most information seekers. Therefore, in this paper, we implement a text summarization system to produce a summary that contains gist information of oil and gas news articles. The summarization is intended to provide important information for oil and gas companies to monitor their competitor-s behaviour in enhancing them in formulating business strategies. The system integrated statistical approach with three underlying concepts: keyword occurrences, title of the news article and location of the sentence. The generated summaries were compared with human generated summaries from an oil and gas company. Precision and recall ratio are used to evaluate the accuracy of the generated summary. Based on the experimental results, the system is able to produce an effective summary with the average recall value of 83% at the compression rate of 25%.
Abstract: This paper describes the two actual tendencies in the
software development process usage: 'Scrum' and 'work in home
office'. It-s exposed the four main challenges to adopt Scrum
framework for distributed teams in this cited kind of work. The
challenges are mainly based on the communication problems due
distances since the Scrum encourages the team to work together in
the same room, and this is not possible when people work distributed
in their homes.
Abstract: The AL-MAJIRI school system is a variant of private
Arabic and Islamic schools which cater for the religious and moral development of Muslims. In the past, the system produced clerics,
scholars, judges, religious reformers, eminent teachers and great men who are worthy of emulation, particularly in northern Nigeria.
Gradually, the system lost its glory but continued to discharge its
educational responsibilities to a certain extent. This paper takes a
look at the activities of the AL-MAJIRI schools. The introduction
provides background information about Nigeria where the schools
operate. This is followed by an overview of the Nigerian educational system, the nature and the features of the AL-MAJIRI school system,
its weaknesses and the current challenges facing the schools. The paper concludes with emphasis on the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the curriculum content of the schools. The step by step procedure required for the reform is discussed.
Abstract: The Kinetics formation of labile Complex
Ag (I) tetra (p-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin, was investigated at 25oC
and I=0.1M (NaNO3). By spectrophotometric titration, the
composition ratio of the complex was established to be 2:1
(Ag : H2TCPP). The equilibrium constant, K, was found to be
log 10-6.53. Binding of the first Ag (I) was found to be rate
determining step with rate constant, k1= 4.67×102 . A plausible
mechanism is discussed. We discus theoretically why Ag(I)2TCPP is
unstable.
Abstract: The increased number of automobiles in recent years
has resulted in great demand for fossil fuel. This has led to the
development of automobile by using alternative fuels which include
gaseous fuels, biofuels and vegetables oils as fuel. Energy from
biomass and more specific bio-diesel is one of the opportunities that
could cover the future demand of fossil fuel shortage. Biomass in the
form of cashew nut shell represents a new energy source and
abundant source of energy in India. The bio-fuel is derived from
cashew nut shell oil and its blend with diesel are promising
alternative fuel for diesel engine. In this work the pyrolysis Cashew
Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL)-Diesel Blends (CDB) was used to run the
Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine. The experiments were conducted
with various blends of CNSL and Diesel namely B20, B40, B60, B80
and B100. The results are compared with neat diesel operation. The
brake thermal efficiency was decreased for blends of CNSL and
Diesel except the lower blends of B20. The brake thermal efficiency
of B20 is nearly closer to that of diesel fuel. Also the emission level
of the all CNSL and Diesel blends was increased compared to neat
diesel. The higher viscosity and lower volatility of CNSL leads to
poor mixture formation and hence lower brake thermal efficiency and
higher emission levels. The higher emission level can be reduced by
adding suitable additives and oxygenates with CNSL and Diesel
blends.
Abstract: Network layer multicast, i.e. IP multicast, even after
many years of research, development and standardization, is not
deployed in large scale due to both technical (e.g. upgrading of
routers) and political (e.g. policy making and negotiation) issues.
Researchers looked for alternatives and proposed application/overlay
multicast where multicast functions are handled by end hosts, not
network layer routers. Member hosts wishing to receive multicast
data form a multicast delivery tree. The intermediate hosts in the tree
act as routers also, i.e. they forward data to the lower hosts in the
tree. Unlike IP multicast, where a router cannot leave the tree until all
members below it leave, in overlay multicast any member can leave
the tree at any time thus disjoining the tree and disrupting the data
dissemination. All the disrupted hosts have to rejoin the tree. This
characteristic of the overlay multicast causes multicast tree unstable,
data loss and rejoin overhead. In this paper, we propose that each node
sets its leaving time from the tree and sends join request to a number
of nodes in the tree. The nodes in the tree will reject the request if
their leaving time is earlier than the requesting node otherwise they
will accept the request. The node can join at one of the accepting
nodes. This makes the tree more stable as the nodes will join the tree
according to their leaving time, earliest leaving time node being at the
leaf of the tree. Some intermediate nodes may not follow their leaving
time and leave earlier than their leaving time thus disrupting the tree.
For this, we propose a proactive recovery mechanism so that disrupted
nodes can rejoin the tree at predetermined nodes immediately. We
have shown by simulation that there is less overhead when joining
the multicast tree and the recovery time of the disrupted nodes is
much less than the previous works. Keywords
Abstract: A model predictive controller based on recursive learning is proposed. In this SISO adaptive controller, a model is automatically updated using simple recursive equations. The identified models are then stored in the memory to be re-used in the future. The decision for model update is taken based on a new control performance index. The new controller allows the use of simple linear model predictive controllers in the control of nonlinear time varying processes.
Abstract: Increasing growth of information volume in the
internet causes an increasing need to develop new (semi)automatic
methods for retrieval of documents and ranking them according to
their relevance to the user query. In this paper, after a brief review
on ranking models, a new ontology based approach for ranking
HTML documents is proposed and evaluated in various
circumstances. Our approach is a combination of conceptual,
statistical and linguistic methods. This combination reserves the
precision of ranking without loosing the speed. Our approach
exploits natural language processing techniques to extract phrases
from documents and the query and doing stemming on words. Then
an ontology based conceptual method will be used to annotate
documents and expand the query. To expand a query the spread
activation algorithm is improved so that the expansion can be done
flexible and in various aspects. The annotated documents and the
expanded query will be processed to compute the relevance degree
exploiting statistical methods. The outstanding features of our
approach are (1) combining conceptual, statistical and linguistic
features of documents, (2) expanding the query with its related
concepts before comparing to documents, (3) extracting and using
both words and phrases to compute relevance degree, (4) improving
the spread activation algorithm to do the expansion based on
weighted combination of different conceptual relationships and (5)
allowing variable document vector dimensions. A ranking system
called ORank is developed to implement and test the proposed
model. The test results will be included at the end of the paper.
Abstract: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the
potential of hollow microneedles for enhancing the transdermal
delivery of Bovine Serum Albumin (MW~66,000 Da)-Fluorescein
Isothiocyanate (BSA-FITC) conjugate, a hydrophilic large molecular
compound. Moreover, the effect of different formulations was
evaluated. The series of binary mixtures composed of propylene
glycol (PG) and pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was
prepared and used as a medium for BSA-FITC. The results showed
that there was no permeation of BSA-FITC solution across the
neonatal porcine skin without using hollow microneedles, whereas
the cumulative amount of BSA-FITC released at 8 h through the
neonatal porcine skin was about 60-70% when using hollow
microneedles. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the higher
volume of PG in binary mixtures injected, the lower cumulative
amount of BSA-FITC released and release rate of BSA-FITC from
skin. These release profiles of BSA-FITC in binary mixtures were
expressed by Fick-s law of diffusion. These results suggest the
utilization of hollow microneedle to enhance transdermal delivery of
protein and provide useful information for designing an effective
hollow microneedle system.
Abstract: In this paper a new approach to face recognition is
presented that achieves double dimension reduction, making the
system computationally efficient with better recognition results and
out perform common DCT technique of face recognition. In pattern
recognition techniques, discriminative information of image
increases with increase in resolution to a certain extent, consequently
face recognition results change with change in face image resolution
and provide optimal results when arriving at a certain resolution
level. In the proposed model of face recognition, initially image
decimation algorithm is applied on face image for dimension
reduction to a certain resolution level which provides best
recognition results. Due to increased computational speed and feature
extraction potential of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), it is
applied on face image. A subset of coefficients of DCT from low to
mid frequencies that represent the face adequately and provides best
recognition results is retained. A tradeoff between decimation factor,
number of DCT coefficients retained and recognition rate with
minimum computation is obtained. Preprocessing of the image is
carried out to increase its robustness against variations in poses and
illumination level. This new model has been tested on different
databases which include ORL , Yale and EME color database.
Abstract: Finite impulse response (FIR) filters have the advantage of linear phase, guaranteed stability, fewer finite precision errors, and efficient implementation. In contrast, they have a major disadvantage of high order need (more coefficients) than IIR counterpart with comparable performance. The high order demand imposes more hardware requirements, arithmetic operations, area usage, and power consumption when designing and fabricating the filter. Therefore, minimizing or reducing these parameters, is a major goal or target in digital filter design task. This paper presents an algorithm proposed for modifying values and the number of non-zero coefficients used to represent the FIR digital pulse shaping filter response. With this algorithm, the FIR filter frequency and phase response can be represented with a minimum number of non-zero coefficients. Therefore, reducing the arithmetic complexity needed to get the filter output. Consequently, the system characteristic i.e. power consumption, area usage, and processing time are also reduced. The proposed algorithm is more powerful when integrated with multiplierless algorithms such as distributed arithmetic (DA) in designing high order digital FIR filters. Here the DA usage eliminates the need for multipliers when implementing the multiply and accumulate unit (MAC) and the proposed algorithm will reduce the number of adders and addition operations needed through the minimization of the non-zero values coefficients to get the filter output.
Abstract: The bit error rate (BER) performance for ultra-wide
band (UWB) indoor communication with impact of metallic furniture
is investigated. The impulse responses of different indoor
environments for any transmitter and receiver location are computed
by shooting and bouncing ray/image and inverse Fourier transform
techniques. By using the impulse responses of these multipath
channels, the BER performance for binary pulse amplitude
modulation (BPAM) impulse radio UWB communication system are
calculated. Numerical results have shown that the multi-path effect
by the metallic cabinets is an important factor for BER performance.
Also the outage probability for the UWB multipath environment with
metallic cabinets is more serious (about 18%) than with wooden
cabinets. Finally, it is worth noting that in these cases the present
work provides not only comparative information but also quantitative
information on the performance reduction.
Abstract: The major objective of this paper is to introduce a new method to select genes from DNA microarray data. As criterion to select genes we suggest to measure the local changes in the correlation graph of each gene and to select those genes whose local changes are largest. More precisely, we calculate the correlation networks from DNA microarray data of cervical cancer whereas each network represents a tissue of a certain tumor stage and each node in the network represents a gene. From these networks we extract one tree for each gene by a local decomposition of the correlation network. The interpretation of a tree is that it represents the n-nearest neighbor genes on the n-th level of a tree, measured by the Dijkstra distance, and, hence, gives the local embedding of a gene within the correlation network. For the obtained trees we measure the pairwise similarity between trees rooted by the same gene from normal to cancerous tissues. This evaluates the modification of the tree topology due to tumor progression. Finally, we rank the obtained similarity values from all tissue comparisons and select the top ranked genes. For these genes the local neighborhood in the correlation networks changes most between normal and cancerous tissues. As a result we find that the top ranked genes are candidates suspected to be involved in tumor growth. This indicates that our method captures essential information from the underlying DNA microarray data of cervical cancer.
Abstract: Soil washing process with a surfactant solution is a potential technology for the rapid removal of hydrophobic organic compound (HOC) from soil. However, large amount of washed water would be produced during operation and this should be treated effectively by proper methods. The soil washed water for complex contaminated site with HOC and heavy metals might contain high amount of pollutants such as HOC and heavy metals as well as used surfactant. The heavy metals in the soil washed water have toxic effects on microbial activities thus these should be removed from the washed water before proceeding to a biological waste-water treatment system. Moreover, the used surfactant solutions are necessary to be recovered for reducing the soil washing operation cost. In order to simultaneously remove the heavy metals and HOC from soil-washed water, activated carbon (AC) was used in the present study. In an anionic-nonionic surfactant mixed solution, the Cd(II) and phenanthrene (PHE) were effectively removed by adsorption on activated carbon. The removal efficiency for Cd(II) was increased from 0.027 mmol-Cd/g-AC to 0.142 mmol-Cd/g-AC as the mole ratio of SDS increased in the presence of PHE. The adsorptive capacity of PHE was also increased according to the SDS mole ratio due to the decrement of molar solubilization ratios (MSR) for PHE in an anionic-nonionic surfactant mixture. The simultaneous adsorption of HOC and cationic heavy metals using activated carbon could be a useful method for surfactant recovery and the reduction of heavy metal toxicity in a surfactant-enhanced soil washing process.
Abstract: Mycophenolic acid “MPA" is a secondary metabolite
of Penicillium bervicompactum with antibiotic and
immunosuppressive properties. In this study, fermentation process
was established for production of mycophenolic acid by Penicillium
bervicompactum MUCL 19011 in shake flask. The maximum MPA
production, product yield and productivity were 1.379 g/L, 18.6 mg/g
glucose and 4.9 mg/L.h respectively. Glucose consumption, biomass
and MPA production profiles were investigated during fermentation
time. It was found that MPA production starts approximately after
180 hours and reaches to a maximum at 280 h. In the next step, the
effects of methionine and acetate concentrations on MPA production
were evaluated. Maximum MPA production, product yield and
productivity (1.763 g/L, 23.8 mg/g glucose and 6.30 mg/L. h
respectively) were obtained with using 2.5 g/L methionine in culture
medium. Further addition of methionine had not more positive effect
on MPA production. Finally, results showed that the addition of
acetate to the culture medium had not any observable effect on MPA
production
Abstract: The main aim of this research is to study the possible
use of recycled fine aggregate made from waste rubble wall to
substitute partially for the natural sand used in the production of
cement and sand bricks. The bricks specimens were prepared by
using 100% natural sand; they were then replaced by recycled fine
aggregate at 25, 50, 75, and 100% by weight of natural sand. A series
of tests was carried out to study the effect of using recycled aggregate
on the physical and mechanical properties of bricks, such as density,
drying shrinkage, water absorption characteristic, compressive and
flexural strength. Test results indicate that it is possible to
manufacture bricks containing recycled fine aggregate with good
characteristics that are similar in physical and mechanical properties
to those of bricks with natural aggregate, provided that the percentage
of recycled fine aggregates is limited up to 50-75%.
Abstract: Basic objective of this study is to create a regression
analysis method that can estimate the length of a plastic hinge which
is an important design parameter, by making use of the outcomes of
(lateral load-lateral displacement hysteretic curves) the experimental
studies conducted for the reinforced square concrete columns. For
this aim, 170 different square reinforced concrete column tests results
have been collected from the existing literature. The parameters
which are thought affecting the plastic hinge length such as crosssection
properties, features of material used, axial loading level,
confinement of the column, longitudinal reinforcement bars in the
columns etc. have been obtained from these 170 different square
reinforced concrete column tests. In the study, when determining the
length of plastic hinge, using the experimental test results, a
regression analysis have been separately tested and compared with
each other. In addition, the outcome of mentioned methods on
determination of plastic hinge length of the reinforced concrete
columns has been compared to other methods available in the
literature.
