Abstract: Natural resources management including water resources requires reliable estimations of time variant environmental parameters. Small improvements in the estimation of environmental parameters would result in grate effects on managing decisions. Noise reduction using wavelet techniques is an effective approach for preprocessing of practical data sets. Predictability enhancement of the river flow time series are assessed using fractal approaches before and after applying wavelet based preprocessing. Time series correlation and persistency, the minimum sufficient length for training the predicting model and the maximum valid length of predictions were also investigated through a fractal assessment.
Abstract: The paper focuses on the enhanced stiffness modeling
of robotic manipulators by taking into account influence of the external force/torque acting upon the end point. It implements the
virtual joint technique that describes the compliance of manipulator elements by a set of localized six-dimensional springs separated by
rigid links and perfect joints. In contrast to the conventional
formulation, which is valid for the unloaded mode and small
displacements, the proposed approach implicitly assumes that the loading leads to the non-negligible changes of the manipulator posture and corresponding amendment of the Jacobian. The
developed numerical technique allows computing the static
equilibrium and relevant force/torque reaction of the manipulator for
any given displacement of the end-effector. This enables designer
detecting essentially nonlinear effects in elastic behavior of
manipulator, similar to the buckling of beam elements. It is also proposed the linearization procedure that is based on the inversion of
the dedicated matrix composed of the stiffness parameters of the
virtual springs and the Jacobians/Hessians of the active and passive
joints. The developed technique is illustrated by an application example that deals with the stiffness analysis of a parallel
manipulator of the Orthoglide family
Abstract: Recently, Cassava has been the driving force of many
developing countries- economic progress. To attain this level,
prerequisites were put in place enabling cassava sector to become an
industrial and a highly competitive crop. Cameroon can achieve the
same results. Moreover, it can upgrade the living conditions of both
rural and urban dwellers and stimulate the development of the whole
economy. Achieving this outcome calls for agricultural policy
reforms. The adoption and implementation of adequate policies go
along with efficient strategies. To choose effective strategies, an indepth
investigation of the sector-s problems is highly recommended.
This paper uses gap analysis method to evaluate cassava sector in
Cameroon. It studies the present situation (where it is now),
interrogates the future (where it should be) and finally proposes
solutions to fill the gap.
Abstract: Detection of incipient abnormal events is important to
improve safety and reliability of machine operations and reduce losses
caused by failures. Improper set-ups or aligning of parts often leads to
severe problems in many machines. The construction of prediction
models for predicting faulty conditions is quite essential in making
decisions on when to perform machine maintenance. This paper
presents a multivariate calibration monitoring approach based on the
statistical analysis of machine measurement data. The calibration
model is used to predict two faulty conditions from historical reference
data. This approach utilizes genetic algorithms (GA) based variable
selection, and we evaluate the predictive performance of several
prediction methods using real data. The results shows that the
calibration model based on supervised probabilistic principal
component analysis (SPPCA) yielded best performance in this work.
By adopting a proper variable selection scheme in calibration models,
the prediction performance can be improved by excluding
non-informative variables from their model building steps.
Abstract: Combined experimental and computational analysis of
hygrothermal performance of an interior thermal insulation system
applied on a brick wall is presented in the paper. In the experimental
part, the functionality of the insulation system is tested at simulated
difference climate conditions using a semi-scale device. The
measured temperature and relative humidity profiles are used for the
calibration of computer code HEMOT that is finally applied for a
long-term hygrothermal analysis of the investigated structure.

Abstract: It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between
innocent murmurs and pathological murmurs during auscultation. In
these difficult cases, an intelligent stethoscope with decision support
abilities would be of great value. In this study, using a dog model,
phonocardiographic recordings were obtained from 27 boxer dogs
with various degrees of aortic stenosis (AS) severity. As a reference
for severity assessment, continuous wave Doppler was used. The data
were analyzed with recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) with
the aim to find features able to distinguish innocent murmurs from
murmurs caused by AS. Four out of eight investigated RQA features
showed significant differences between innocent murmurs and
pathological murmurs. Using a plain linear discriminant analysis
classifier, the best pair of features (recurrence rate and entropy)
resulted in a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 88%. In
conclusion, RQA provide valid features which can be used for
differentiation between innocent murmurs and murmurs caused by
AS.
Abstract: In this paper, an authentication system using keystroke dynamics is presented. We introduced pressure sensing for the improvement of the accuracy of measurement and durability against intrusion using key-logger, and so on, however additional instrument is needed. As the result, it has been found that the pressure sensing is also effective for estimation of real moment of keystroke.
Abstract: Focusing on the environmental issues, including the reduction of scrap and consumer residuals, along with the benefiting from the economic value during the life cycle of goods/products leads the companies to have an important competitive approach. The aim of this paper is to present a new mixed nonlinear facility locationallocation model in recycling collection networks by considering multi-echelon, multi-suppliers, multi-collection centers and multifacilities in the recycling network. To make an appropriate decision in reality, demands, returns, capacities, costs and distances, are regarded uncertain in our model. For this purpose, a fuzzy mathematical programming-based possibilistic approach is introduced as a solution methodology from the recent literature to solve the proposed mixed-nonlinear programming model (MNLP). The computational experiments are provided to illustrate the applicability of the designed model in a supply chain environment and to help the decision makers to facilitate their analysis.
Abstract: Jacobs, A.B. (1993) stated that "When I think of a city,
the first thing that comes to mind is the street. If the street is
interesting, the rest of the city is interesting. If the street is mundane,
the city is also mundane." In this statement, he expresses the
importance of the streetscape and the street environment. The
objective of this paper is to analyze the spatial relationships of the
streetscape that affect the general public's preference of the cityscape.
Furthermore, this research focuses on the important role that
streetscape plays in public perception of the city by the pedestrians
who experience it daily. The subject of this paper is eight of the
"Design Seoul Street."The analysis and survey results show the
preference criteria that affect the streetscape and ultimately the
cityscape. This research endeavor shows that differences in physical
form, shape, size, color, locations, and context are important.
Abstract: In a recent major industry-supported research and development study, a novel framework was developed and applied for assessment of reliability and quality performance levels in reallife power systems with practical large-scale sizes. The new assessment methodology is based on three metaphors (dimensions) representing the relationship between available generation capacities and required demand levels. The paper shares the results of the successfully completed stud and describes the implementation of the new methodology on practical zones in the Saudi electricity system.
Abstract: Wireless ad hoc nodes are freely and dynamically
self-organize in communicating with others. Each node can act as
host or router. However it actually depends on the capability of
nodes in terms of its current power level, signal strength, number
of hops, routing protocol, interference and others. In this research,
a study was conducted to observe the effect of hops count over
different network topologies that contribute to TCP Congestion
Control performance degradation. To achieve this objective, a
simulation using NS-2 with different topologies have been
evaluated. The comparative analysis has been discussed based on
standard observation metrics: throughput, delay and packet loss
ratio. As a result, there is a relationship between types of topology
and hops counts towards the performance of ad hoc network. In
future, the extension study will be carried out to investigate the
effect of different error rate and background traffic over same
topologies.
Abstract: In this paper, Selective Adaptive Parallel Interference Cancellation (SA-PIC) technique is presented for Multicarrier Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (MC DS-CDMA) scheme. The motivation of using SA-PIC is that it gives high performance and at the same time, reduces the computational complexity required to perform interference cancellation. An upper bound expression of the bit error rate (BER) for the SA-PIC under Rayleigh fading channel condition is derived. Moreover, the implementation complexities for SA-PIC and Adaptive Parallel Interference Cancellation (APIC) are discussed and compared. The performance of SA-PIC is investigated analytically and validated via computer simulations.
Abstract: The triumph of inductive neuro-stimulation since its rediscovery in the 1980s has been quite spectacular. In lots of branches ranging from clinical applications to basic research this system is absolutely indispensable. Nevertheless, the basic knowledge about the processes underlying the stimulation effect is still very rough and rarely refined in a quantitative way. This seems to be not only an inexcusable blank spot in biophysics and for stimulation prediction, but also a fundamental hindrance for technological progress. The already very sophisticated devices have reached a stage where further optimization requires better strategies than provided by simple linear membrane models of integrate-and-fire style. Addressing this problem for the first time, we suggest in the following text a way for virtual quantitative analysis of a stimulation system. Concomitantly, this ansatz seems to provide a route towards a better understanding by using nonlinear signal processing and taking the nerve as a filter that is adapted for neuronal magnetic stimulation. The model is compact and easy to adjust. The whole setup behaved very robustly during all performed tests. Exemplarily a recent innovative stimulator design known as cTMS is analyzed and dimensioned with this approach in the following. The results show hitherto unforeseen potentials.
Abstract: The objective of this research is to study principal
component analysis for classification of 67 soil samples collected from
different agricultural areas in the western part of Thailand. Six soil
properties were measured on the soil samples and are used as original
variables. Principal component analysis is applied to reduce the
number of original variables. A model based on the first two
principal components accounts for 72.24% of total variance. Score
plots of first two principal components were used to map with
agricultural areas divided into horticulture, field crops and wetland.
The results showed some relationships between soil properties and
agricultural areas. PCA was shown to be a useful tool for agricultural
areas classification based on soil properties.
Abstract: Deprivation indices are widely used in public health
study. These indices are also referred as the index of inequalities or
disadvantage. Even though, there are many indices that have been
built before, it is believed to be less appropriate to use the existing
indices to be applied in other countries or areas which had different
socio-economic conditions and different geographical characteristics.
The objective of this study is to construct the index based on the
geographical and socio-economic factors in Peninsular Malaysia
which is defined as the weighted household-based deprivation index.
This study has employed the variables based on household items,
household facilities, school attendance and education level obtained
from Malaysia 2000 census report. The factor analysis is used to
extract the latent variables from indicators, or reducing the
observable variable into smaller amount of components or factor.
Based on the factor analysis, two extracted factors were selected,
known as Basic Household Amenities and Middle-Class Household
Item factor. It is observed that the district with a lower index values
are located in the less developed states like Kelantan, Terengganu
and Kedah. Meanwhile, the areas with high index values are located
in developed states such as Pulau Pinang, W.P. Kuala Lumpur and
Selangor.
Abstract: In recent years, environment regulation forcing
manufactures to consider recovery activity of end-of- life products
and/or return products for refurbishing, recycling,
remanufacturing/repair and disposal in supply chain management. In
this paper, a mathematical model is formulated for single product
production-inventory system considering remanufacturing/reuse of
return products and rate of return products follows a demand like
function, dependent on purchasing price and acceptance quality level.
It is useful in decision making to determine whether to go for
remanufacturing or disposal of returned products along with newly
produced products to satisfy a stationary demand. In addition, a
modified genetic algorithm approach is proposed, inspired by particle
swarm optimization method. Numerical analysis of the case study is
carried out to validate the model.
Abstract: The continued interest in the use of distributed generation in recent years is leading to the growth in number of distributed generators connected to distribution networks. Steady state voltage rise resulting from the connection of these generators can be a major obstacle to their connection at lower voltage levels. The present electric distribution network is designed to keep the customer voltage within tolerance limit. This may require a reduction in connectable generation capacity, under utilization of appropriate generation sites. Thus distribution network operators need a proper voltage regulation method to allow the significant integration of distributed generation systems to existing network. In this work a voltage rise problem in a typical distribution system has been studied. A method for voltage regulation of distribution system with multiple DG system by coordinated operation distributed generator, capacitor and OLTC has been developed. A sensitivity based analysis has been carried out to determine the priority for individual generators in multiple DG environment. The effectiveness of the developed method has been evaluated under various cases through simulation results.
Abstract: This paper develops driver reaction-time models for
car-following analysis based on human factors. The reaction time
was classified as brake-reaction time (BRT) and
acceleration/deceleration reaction time (ADRT). The BRT occurs
when the lead vehicle is barking and its brake light is on, while the
ADRT occurs when the driver reacts to adjust his/her speed using the
gas pedal only. The study evaluates the effect of driver
characteristics and traffic kinematic conditions on the driver reaction
time in a car-following environment. The kinematic conditions
introduced urgency and expectancy based on the braking behaviour
of the lead vehicle at different speeds and spacing. The kinematic
conditions were used for evaluating the BRT and are classified as
normal, surprised, and stationary. Data were collected on a driving
simulator integrated into a real car and included the BRT and ADRT
(as dependent variables) and driver-s age, gender, driving experience,
driving intensity (driving hours per week), vehicle speed, and
spacing (as independent variables). The results showed that there was
a significant difference in the BRT at normal, surprised, and
stationary scenarios and supported the hypothesis that both urgency
and expectancy had significant effects on BRT. Driver-s age, gender,
speed, and spacing were found to be significant variables for the
BRT in all scenarios. The results also showed that driver-s age and
gender were significant variables for the ADRT. The research
presented in this paper is part of a larger project to develop a driversensitive
in-vehicle rear-end collision warning system.
Abstract: ICA which is generally used for blind source separation
problem has been tested for feature extraction in Speech recognition
system to replace the phoneme based approach of MFCC. Applying
the Cepstral coefficients generated to ICA as preprocessing has
developed a new signal processing approach. This gives much better
results against MFCC and ICA separately, both for word and speaker
recognition. The mixing matrix A is different before and after MFCC
as expected. As Mel is a nonlinear scale. However, cepstrals
generated from Linear Predictive Coefficient being independent
prove to be the right candidate for ICA. Matlab is the tool used for
all comparisons. The database used is samples of ISOLET.
