Abstract: In this paper, the absorption and fluorescence
emission spectra of Yb:Y3Al5O12 (YAG)(25 at%) crystal as a disk
laser medium are measured at high temperature (300-450K). The
absorption and emission cross sections of Yb:YAG crystal are
determined using Reciprocity method. Temperature dependence of
941nm absorption cross section and 1031nm emission cross section
is extracted in the range of 300-450K. According to our experimental
results, an exponential temperature dependence between 300K and
450K is acquired for the 1031nm peak emission cross section and
also for 941nm peak absorption cross section of Yb:YAG crystal.
These results could be used for simulation and design of high power
highly doped Yb:YAG thin disk lasers.
Abstract: Tehran, one of the heavily-populated capitals, is
severely suffering from increasing air pollution. To show a
documented trend of such pollutants during last years, plane tree
species (Platanus orientalis) were suited to be studied as indicators,
for the species have been planted throughout the city many years
ago. Two areas (Saadatabad and Narmak districts) allotting different
contents of crowed and highly-traffic routs but the same ecological
characteristics were selected. Twelve sample individuals were cored
twice perpendicularly in each area. Tree-rings of each core were
measured by a binocular microscope and separated annually for the
last 25 years. Two heavy metals including Cd and Pb accompanied
by a mineral element (Ca) were analyzed using Hatch method. Treerings
analysis of the two areas showed different groups in term of
physiologically ability as the growths were plunged during the last
10 years in Saadatabad district and showed a slight decrease in the
same period for another studying area. In direct contrast to
decreasing growth trend in Saadatabad, all three mentioned elements
increased sharply during last 25 years in the same area. When it came
to Narmak district, the trend was completely different with
Saadatabad. There were some fluctuations in absorbing trace
elements like tree-rings widths were, yet calcium showed an upward
trend all the last 25 years. The results of the study proved the
possibility of using tree species of each region to monitor its air
pollution trends of the past, hence to depict a pollution assessment of
a populated city for last years and then to make appropriate decisions
for the future as it is well-known what the trend is. On the other
hand, risen values of calcium (as the stress-indicator element)
accompanied by increased trace elements suggests non-sustainable
state of the trees.
Abstract: Mobile ad hoc network is a collection of mobile
nodes communicating through wireless channels without any
existing network infrastructure or centralized administration.
Because of the limited transmission range of wireless network
interfaces, multiple "hops" may be needed to exchange data
across the network. Consequently, many routing algorithms
have come into existence to satisfy the needs of
communications in such networks. Researchers have
conducted many simulations comparing the performance of
these routing protocols under various conditions and
constraints. One question that arises is whether speed of nodes
affects the relative performance of routing protocols being
studied. This paper addresses the question by simulating two
routing protocols AODV and DSDV. Protocols were
simulated using the ns-2 and were compared in terms of
packet delivery fraction, normalized routing load and average
delay, while varying number of nodes, and speed.
Abstract: The work describes the use of a synthetic transmit
aperture (STA) with a single element transmitting and all elements
receiving in medical ultrasound imaging. STA technique is a novel
approach to today-s commercial systems, where an image is acquired
sequentially one image line at a time that puts a strict limit on the
frame rate and the amount of data needed for high image quality. The
STA imaging allows to acquire data simultaneously from all
directions over a number of emissions, and the full image can be
reconstructed.
In experiments a 32-element linear transducer array with 0.48 mm
inter-element spacing was used. Single element transmission aperture
was used to generate a spherical wave covering the full image region.
The 2D ultrasound images of wire phantom are presented obtained
using the STA and commercial ultrasound scanner Antares to
demonstrate the benefits of the SA imaging.
Abstract: One of the efficient factors in comprehensive
development of an area is to provide water sources and on the other
hand the appropriate management of them. Population growth and
nourishment security for such a population necessitate the
achievement of constant development besides the reforming of
traditional management in order to increase the profit of sources; In
this case, the constant exploitation of sources for the next generations
will be considered in this program. The achievement of this
development without the consideration and possibility of water
development will be too difficult. Zayanderood basin with 41500
areas in square kilometers contains 7 sub-basins and 20 units of
hydrologic. In this basin area, from the entire environment
descending, just a small part will enter into the river currents and the
rest will be out of efficient usage by various ways. The most
important surface current of this basin is Zayanderood River with
403 kilometers length which is originated from east slopes of Zagros
mount and after draining of this basin area it will enter into
Gaavkhooni pond. The existence of various sources and
consumptions of water in Zayanderood basin, water transfer of the
other basin areas into this basin, of course the contradiction between
the upper and lower beneficiaries, the existence of worthwhile
natural ecosystems such as Gaavkhooni swamp in this basin area and
finally, the drought condition and lack of water in this area all
necessitate the existence of comprehensive management of water
sources in this central basin area of Iran as this method is a kind of
management which considers the development and the management
of water sources as an equilibrant way to increase the economical
and social benefits. In this study, it is tried to survey the network of
surface water sources of basin in upper and lower sections; at the
most, according to the difficulties and deficiencies of an efficient
management of water sources in this basin area, besides the
difficulties of water draining and the destructive phenomenon of
flood-water, the appropriate guidelines according to the region
conditions are presented in order to prevent the deviation of water in
upper sections and development of regions in lower sections of
Zayanderood dam.
Abstract: Iris pattern is an important biological feature of human body; it becomes very hot topic in both research and practical applications. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for iris recognition and a simple, efficient and fast method is introduced to extract a set of discriminatory features using first order gradient operator applied on grayscale images. The gradient based features are robust, up to certain extents, against the variations may occur in contrast or brightness of iris image samples; the variations are mostly occur due lightening differences and camera changes. At first, the iris region is located, after that it is remapped to a rectangular area of size 360x60 pixels. Also, a new method is proposed for detecting eyelash and eyelid points; it depends on making image statistical analysis, to mark the eyelash and eyelid as a noise points. In order to cover the features localization (variation), the rectangular iris image is partitioned into N overlapped sub-images (blocks); then from each block a set of different average directional gradient densities values is calculated to be used as texture features vector. The applied gradient operators are taken along the horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions. The low order norms of gradient components were used to establish the feature vector. Euclidean distance based classifier was used as a matching metric for determining the degree of similarity between the features vector extracted from the tested iris image and template features vectors stored in the database. Experimental tests were performed using 2639 iris images from CASIA V4-Interival database, the attained recognition accuracy has reached up to 99.92%.
Abstract: Based on the one-bit-matching principle and by turning the de-mixing matrix into an orthogonal matrix via certain normalization, Ma et al proposed a one-bit-matching learning algorithm on the Stiefel manifold for independent component analysis [8]. But this algorithm is not adaptive. In this paper, an algorithm which can extract kurtosis and its sign of each independent source component directly from observation data is firstly introduced. With the algorithm , the one-bit-matching learning algorithm is revised, so that it can make the blind separation on the Stiefel manifold implemented completely in the adaptive mode in the framework of natural gradient.
Abstract: In recent years, there have been attempts to store
natural gas in adsorptive form. This is called adsorptive natural gas,
or ANG. The problem with this technology is the low sorption
capacity. The purpose is to achieve compressed natural gas (CNG)
capacity of 230 V/V. Further research is required to achieve such
target. Several research studies have been performed with this target;
through either the modification or development of new sorbents or
the optimization of the operation sorption process itself. In this work,
storage of methane on molecular sieves 5A and 13X was studied on
dry basis, and on wet basis to certain extent. The temperature and the
pressure dynamics were investigated. The results indicated that
regardless of the charge pressure, the time for the peak temperature
during the methane charge process is always the same. This can be
used as a characteristic of the adsorbent. The total achieved
deliveries using molecular sieves were much lower than that of
activated carbons; 53.0 V/V for the case of 13X molecular sieves and
43 V/V for the case of 5A molecular sieves, both at 2oC and 4 MPa
(580 psi). Investigation of charge pressure dynamic using wet
molecular sieves at 2oC and a mass ratio of 0.5, revealed slowness of
the process and unexpected behavior.
Abstract: CO2 miscible displacement is not feasible in many oil fields due to high reservoir temperature as higher pressure is required to achieve miscibility. The miscibility pressure is far higher than the formation fracture pressure making it impossible to have CO2 miscible displacement. However, by using oleophilic chemicals, minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) could be lowered. The main objective of this research is to find the best oleophilic chemical in MMP reduction using slim-tube test and Vanishing Interfacial Tension (VIT) The chemicals are selected based on the characteristics that it must be oil soluble, low water solubility, have 4 – 8 carbons, semi polar, economical, and safe for human operation. The families of chemicals chosen are carboxylic acid, alcohol, and ketone. The whole experiment would be conducted at 100°C and the best chemical is said to be effective when it is able to lower CO2-crude oil MMP the most. Findings of this research would have great impact to the oil and gas industry in reduction of operation cost for CO2EOR which is applicable to both onshore and offshore operation.
Abstract: Wind is among the potential energy resources which
can be harnessed to generate wind energy for conversion into
electrical power. Due to the variability of wind speed with time and
height, it becomes difficult to predict the generated wind energy more
optimally. In this paper, an attempt is made to establish a
probabilistic model fitting the wind speed data recorded at
Makambako site in Tanzania. Wind speeds and direction were
respectively measured using anemometer (type AN1) and wind Vane
(type WD1) both supplied by Delta-T-Devices at a measurement
height of 2 m. Wind speeds were then extrapolated for the height of
10 m using power law equation with an exponent of 0.47. Data were
analysed using MINITAB statistical software to show the variability
of wind speeds with time and height, and to determine the underlying
probability model of the extrapolated wind speed data. The results
show that wind speeds at Makambako site vary cyclically over time;
and they conform to the Weibull probability distribution. From these
results, Weibull probability density function can be used to predict
the wind energy.
Abstract: In the Fe-3%Si sheets, grade Hi-B, with AlN and MnS
as inhibitors, the Goss grains which abnormally grow do not have a
size greater than the average size of the primary matrix. In this
heterogeneous microstructure, the size factor is not a required
condition for the secondary recrystallization. The onset of the small
Goss grain abnormal growth appears to be related to a particular
behavior of their grain boundaries, to the local texture and to the
distribution of the inhibitors. The presence and the evolution of
oriented clusters ensure to the small Goss grains a favorable
neighborhood to grow. The modified Monte-Carlo approach, which
is applied, considers the local environment of each grain. The grain
growth is dependent of its real spatial position; the matrix
heterogeneity is then taken into account. The grain growth conditions
are considered in the global matrix and in different matrixes
corresponding to A component clusters. The grain growth behaviour
is considered with introduction of energy only, energy and mobility,
energy and mobility and precipitates.
Abstract: This study explored the relationship between
psychological traits, demographics and financial behavioral biases for
individual investors in Taiwan stock market. By using questionnaire
survey method conducted in 2010, there are 554 valid convenient
samples collected to examine the determinants of three types of
behavioral biases. Based on literature review, two hypothesized
models are constructed and further used to evaluate the effects of big
five personality traits and demographic variables on investment biases
through Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis. The results
showed that investment biases of individual investors are significantly
related to four personality traits as well as some demographics.
Abstract: Extraction of Fe(III) from aqueous solution using Trin-
butyl Phosphate (TBP) as carrier needs a highly acidic medium
(>6N) as it favours formation of chelating complex FeCl3.TBP.
Similarly, stripping of Iron(III) from loaded organic solvents requires
neutral pH or alkaline medium to dissociate the same complex. It is
observed that TBP co-extracts acids along with metal, which causes
reversal of driving force of extraction and iron(III) is re-extracted
back from the strip phase into the feed phase during Liquid Emulsion
Membrane (LEM) pertraction. Therefore, rate of extraction of
different mineral acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) using TBP with and
without presence of metal Fe(III) was examined. It is revealed that in
presence of metal acid extraction is enhanced. Determination of mass
transfer coefficient of both acid and metal extraction was performed
by using Bulk Liquid Membrane (BLM). The average mass transfer
coefficient was obtained by fitting the derived model equation with
experimentally obtained data. The mass transfer coefficient of the
mineral acid extraction is in the order of kHNO3 = 3.3x10-6m/s > kHCl =
6.05x10-7m/s > kH2SO4 = 1.85x10-7m/s. The distribution equilibria of
the above mentioned acids between aqueous feed solution and a
solution of tri-n-butyl-phosphate (TBP) in organic solvents have been
investigated. The stoichiometry of acid extraction reveals the
formation of TBP.2HCl, HNO3.2TBP, and TBP.H2SO4 complexes.
Moreover, extraction of Iron(III) by TBP in HCl aqueous solution
forms complex FeCl3.TBP.2HCl while in HNO3 medium forms
complex 3FeCl3.TBP.2HNO3
Abstract: The absolute Cu atoms density in Cu(2S1/22P1/2)
ground state has been measured by Resonance Optical Absorption
(ROA) technique in a DC magnetron sputtering deposition with
argon. We measured these densities under variety of operation
conditions: pressure from 0.6 μbar to 14 μbar, input power from
10W to 200W and N2 mixture from 0% to 100%. For measuring the
gas temperature, we used the simulation of N2 rotational spectra
with a special computer code. The absolute number density of Cu
atoms decreases with increasing the N2 percentage of buffer gas at
any conditions of this work. But the deposition rate, is not decreased
with the same manner. The deposition rate variation is very small
and in the limit of quartz balance measuring equipment accuracy. So
we conclude that decrease in the absolute number density of Cu
atoms in magnetron plasma has not a big effect on deposition rate,
because the diffusion of Cu atoms to the chamber volume and
deviation of Cu atoms from direct path (towards the substrate)
decreases with increasing of N2 percentage of buffer gas. This is
because of the lower mass of N2 atoms compared to the argon ones.
Abstract: Many commercial processes are available for the
removal of H2S from gaseous streams. The desulfurization of gas
streams using aqueous ferric sulfate solution as washing liquor is
studied. Apart from sulfur, only H2O is generated in the process, and
consequently, no waste treatment facilities are required. A distinct
advantage of the process is that the reaction of H2S with is so rapid
and complete that there remains no danger of discharging toxic waste
gas. In this study, the reactive absorption of hydrogen sulfide into
aqueous ferric sulfate solution has been studied and design
calculations for equipments have been done and effective operation
parameters on this process considered. Results show that high
temperature and low pressure are suitable for absorption reaction.
Variation of hydrogen sulfide concentration and Fe3+ concentration
with time in absorption reaction shown that the reaction of ferric
sulfate and hydrogen sulfide is first order with respect to the both
reactant. At low Fe2(SO4)3 concentration the absorption rate of H2S
increase with increasing the Fe2(SO4)3 concentration. At higher
concentration a decrease in the absorption rate was found. At higher
concentration of Fe2(SO4)3, the ionic strength and viscosity of
solution increase remarkably resulting in a decrease of solubility,
diffusivity and hence absorption rate.
Abstract: α-Pinene is the main component of the most
turpentine oils. The hydration of α-pinene with acid catalysts leads to
a complex mixture of monoterpenes. In order to obtain more valuable
products, the α-pinene in the turpentine can be hydrated in dilute
mineral acid solutions to produce α-terpineol. The design of
separation processes requires information on phase equilibrium and
related thermodynamic properties. This paper reports the results of
study on liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of system containing α-
pinene + water and α-terpineol + water.
Binary LLE for α-pinene + water system, and α-terpineol + water
systems were determined by experiment at 301K and atmospheric
pressure. The two component mixture was stirred for about 30min,
then the mixture was left for about 2h for complete phase separation.
The composition of both phases was analyzed by using a Gas
Chromatograph. The experimental data were correlated by
considering both NRTL and UNIQUAC activity coefficient models.
The LLE data for the system of α-pinene + water and α-terpineol +
water were correlated successfully by the NRTL model. The
experimental data were not satisfactorily fitted by the UNIQUAC
model. The NRTL model (α =0.3) correlates the LLE data for the
system of α-pinene + water at 301K with RMSD of 0.0404%. And
the NRTL model (α =0.61) at 301K with RMSD of 0.0058 %. The
NRTL model (α =0.3) correlates the LLE data for the system of α-
terpineol + water at 301K with RMSD of 0.1487% and the NRTL
model (α =0.6) at 301K with RMSD of 0.0032%, between the
experimental and calculated mole fractions.

Abstract: The search for factors that influence user behavior has remained an important theme for both the academic and practitioner Information Systems Communities. In this paper we examine relevant user behaviors in the phase after adoption and investigate two factors that are expected to influence such behaviors, namely User Involvement (UI) and Personal Innovativeness in IT (PIIT). We conduct a field study to examine how these factors influence postadoption behavior and how they are interrelated. Building on theoretical premises and prior empirical findings, we propose and test two alternative models of the relationship between these factors. Our results reveal that the best explanation of post-adoption behavior is provided by the model where UI and PIIT independently influence post-adoption behavior. Our findings have important implications for research and practice. To that end, we offer directions for future research.
Abstract: In this paper, a target signal detection method using
multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is proposed. The
MUSIC algorithm is a subspace-based direction of arrival (DOA)
estimation method. The algorithm detects the DOAs of multiple
sources using the inverse of the eigenvalue-weighted eigen spectra. To
apply the algorithm to target signal detection for GSC-based
beamforming, we utilize its spectral response for the target DOA in
noisy conditions. For evaluation of the algorithm, the performance of
the proposed target signal detection method is compared with that of
the normalized cross-correlation (NCC), the fixed beamforming, and
the power ratio method. Experimental results show that the proposed
algorithm significantly outperforms the conventional ones in receiver
operating characteristics(ROC) curves.
Abstract: The amount and heterogeneity of data in biomedical research, notably in interdisciplinary research, requires new methods for the collection, presentation and analysis of information. Important data from laboratory experiments as well as patient trials are available but come out of distributed resources. The Charite Medical School in Berlin has established together with the German Research Foundation (DFG) a new information service center for kidney diseases and transplantation (Open European Nephrology Science Centre - OpEN.SC). The system is based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) with main and auxiliary modules arranged in four layers. To improve the reuse and efficient arrangement of the services the functionalities are described as business processes using the standardised Business Process Execution Language (BPEL).
