Abstract: The decision to recruit manpower in an organization
requires clear identification of the criteria (attributes) that distinguish
successful from unsuccessful performance. The choice of appropriate
attributes or criteria in different levels of hierarchy in an organization
is a multi-criteria decision problem and therefore multi-criteria
decision making (MCDM) techniques can be used for prioritization
of such attributes. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one such
technique that is widely used for deciding among the complex criteria
structure in different levels. In real applications, conventional AHP
still cannot reflect the human thinking style as precise data
concerning human attributes are quite hard to be extracted. Fuzzy
logic offers a systematic base in dealing with situations, which are
ambiguous or not well defined. This study aims at defining a
methodology to improve the quality of prioritization of an
employee-s performance measurement attributes under fuzziness. To
do so, a methodology based on the Extent Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy
Process is proposed. Within the model, four main attributes such as
Subject knowledge and achievements, Research aptitude, Personal
qualities and strengths and Management skills with their subattributes
are defined. The two approaches conventional AHP
approach and the Extent Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process approach
have been compared on the same hierarchy structure and criteria set.
Abstract: Conventional concentrically-braced frame (CBF)
systems have limited drift capacity before brace buckling and related
damage leads to deterioration in strength and stiffness. Self-centering
concentrically-braced frame (SC-CBF) systems have been developed
to increase drift capacity prior to initiation of damage and minimize
residual drift. SC-CBFs differ from conventional CBFs in that the
SC-CBF columns are designed to uplift from the foundation at a
specified level of lateral loading, initiating a rigid-body rotation
(rocking) of the frame. Vertically-aligned post-tensioning bars resist
uplift and provide a restoring force to return the SC-CBF columns to
the foundation (self-centering the system). This paper presents a
parametric study of different prototype buildings using SC-CBFs.
The bay widths of the SC-CBFs have been varied in these buildings
to study different geometries. Nonlinear numerical analyses of the
different SC-CBFs are presented to illustrate the effect of frame
geometry on the behavior and dynamic response of the SC-CBF
system.
Abstract: The conventional GA combined with a local search
algorithm, such as the 2-OPT, forms a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA)
for the traveling salesman problem (TSP). However, the geometric
properties which are problem specific knowledge can be used to
improve the search process of the HGA. Some tour segments (edges)
of TSPs are fine while some maybe too long to appear in a short tour.
This knowledge could constrain GAs to work out with fine tour
segments without considering long tour segments as often.
Consequently, a new algorithm is proposed, called intelligent-OPT
hybrid genetic algorithm (IOHGA), to improve the GA and the 2-OPT
algorithm in order to reduce the search time for the optimal solution.
Based on the geometric properties, all the tour segments are assigned
2-level priorities to distinguish between good and bad genes. A
simulation study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the
IOHGA. The experimental results indicate that in general the IOHGA
could obtain near-optimal solutions with less time and better accuracy
than the hybrid genetic algorithm with simulated annealing algorithm
(HGA(SA)).
Abstract: This paper presents a Neural Network (NN) identification of icing parameters in an A340 aircraft and a reconfiguration technique to keep the A/C performance close to the performance prior to icing. Five aircraft parameters are assumed to be considerably affected by icing. The off-line training for identifying the clear and iced dynamics is based on the Levenberg-Marquard Backpropagation algorithm. The icing parameters are located in the system matrix. The physical locations of the icing are assumed at the right and left wings. The reconfiguration is based on the technique known as the control mixer approach or pseudo inverse technique. This technique generates the new control input vector such that the A/C dynamics is not much affected by icing. In the simulations, the longitudinal and lateral dynamics of an Airbus A340 aircraft model are considered, and the stability derivatives affected by icing are identified. The simulation results show the successful NN identification of the icing parameters and the reconfigured flight dynamics having the similar performance before the icing. In other words, the destabilizing icing affect is compensated.
Abstract: Image restoration involves elimination of noise. Filtering techniques were adopted so far to restore images since last five decades. In this paper, we consider the problem of image restoration degraded by a blur function and corrupted by random noise. A method for reducing additive noise in images by explicit analysis of local image statistics is introduced and compared to other noise reduction methods. The proposed method, which makes use of an a priori noise model, has been evaluated on various types of images. Bayesian based algorithms and technique of image processing have been described and substantiated with experimentation using MATLAB.
Abstract: This paper proposes an efficient learning method for the layered neural networks based on the selection of training data and input characteristics of an output layer unit. Comparing to recent neural networks; pulse neural networks, quantum neuro computation, etc, the multilayer network is widely used due to its simple structure. When learning objects are complicated, the problems, such as unsuccessful learning or a significant time required in learning, remain unsolved. Focusing on the input data during the learning stage, we undertook an experiment to identify the data that makes large errors and interferes with the learning process. Our method devides the learning process into several stages. In general, input characteristics to an output layer unit show oscillation during learning process for complicated problems. The multi-stage learning method proposes by the authors for the function approximation problems of classifying learning data in a phased manner, focusing on their learnabilities prior to learning in the multi layered neural network, and demonstrates validity of the multi-stage learning method. Specifically, this paper verifies by computer experiments that both of learning accuracy and learning time are improved of the BP method as a learning rule of the multi-stage learning method. In learning, oscillatory phenomena of a learning curve serve an important role in learning performance. The authors also discuss the occurrence mechanisms of oscillatory phenomena in learning. Furthermore, the authors discuss the reasons that errors of some data remain large value even after learning, observing behaviors during learning.
Abstract: Numerous experimental tests for post-installed anchor systems drilled in hardened concrete were conducted in order to estimate pull-out and shear strength accounting for uncertainties such as torque ratios, embedment depths and different diameters in demands. In this study, the strength of the systems was significantly changed by the effect of those three uncertainties during pull-out experimental tests, whereas the shear strength of the systems was not affected by torque ratios. It was also shown that concrete cone failure or damage mechanism was generally investigated during and after pull-out tests and in shear strength tests, mostly the anchor systems were failed prior to failure of primary structural system. Furthermore, 3D finite element model for the anchor systems was created by ABAQUS for the numerical analysis. The verification of finite element model was identical till the failure points to the load-displacement relationship specified by the experimental tests.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the data-driven generation
of fuzzy IF...THEN rules. The resulted fuzzy rule base can be
applied to build a classifier, a model used for prediction, or
it can be applied to form a decision support system. Among
the wide range of possible approaches, the decision tree and
the association rule based algorithms are overviewed, and two
new approaches are presented based on the a priori fuzzy
clustering based partitioning of the continuous input variables.
An application study is also presented, where the developed
methods are tested on the well known Wisconsin Breast Cancer
classification problem.
Abstract: This paper introduces the foundations of Bayesian probability theory and Bayesian decision method. The main goal of Bayesian decision theory is to minimize the expected loss of a decision or minimize the expected risk. The purposes of this study are to review the decision process on the issue of flood occurrences and to suggest possible process for decision improvement. This study examines the problem structure of flood occurrences and theoretically explicates the decision-analytic approach based on Bayesian decision theory and application to flood occurrences in Environmental Engineering. In this study, we will discuss about the flood occurrences upon an annual maximum water level in cm, 43-year record available from 1965 to 2007 at the gauging station of Sagaing on the Ayeyarwady River with the drainage area - 120193 sq km by using Bayesian decision method. As a result, we will discuss the loss and risk of vast areas of agricultural land whether which will be inundated or not in the coming year based on the two standard maximum water levels during 43 years. And also we forecast about that lands will be safe from flood water during the next 10 years.
Abstract: The search for factors that influence user behavior has remained an important theme for both the academic and practitioner Information Systems Communities. In this paper we examine relevant user behaviors in the phase after adoption and investigate two factors that are expected to influence such behaviors, namely User Involvement (UI) and Personal Innovativeness in IT (PIIT). We conduct a field study to examine how these factors influence postadoption behavior and how they are interrelated. Building on theoretical premises and prior empirical findings, we propose and test two alternative models of the relationship between these factors. Our results reveal that the best explanation of post-adoption behavior is provided by the model where UI and PIIT independently influence post-adoption behavior. Our findings have important implications for research and practice. To that end, we offer directions for future research.
Abstract: WiMAX is defined as Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access by the WiMAX Forum, formed in June 2001 to
promote conformance and interoperability of the IEEE 802.16
standard, officially known as WirelessMAN. The attractive features
of WiMAX technology are very high throughput and Broadband
Wireless Access over a long distance. A detailed simulation
environment is demonstrated with the UGS, nrtPS and ertPS service
classes for throughput, delay and packet delivery ratio for a mixed
environment of fixed and mobile WiMAX. A simple mobility aspect
is considered for the mobile WiMAX and the PMP mode of
transmission is considered in TDD mode. The Network Simulator 2
(NS-2) is the tool which is used to simulate the WiMAX network
scenario. A simple Priority Scheduler and Weighted Round Robin
Schedulers are the WiMAX schedulers used in the research work
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to find out the efficacy
of selected mobility exercises and participation in special games on psychomotor abilities, functional abilities and skill performance
among intellectually disabled children of age group under 14. Thirty male students who were studying in Balar Kalvi Nilayam and YMCA
College Special School, Chennai, acted as subjects for the study.
They were only mild and moderate in intellectual disability. These
students did not undergo any special training or coaching programme apart from their regular routine physical activity classes as a part of
the curriculum in the school. They were attached at random, based on
age in which 30 belonged to under 14 age group, which was divided
into three equal group of ten for each experimental treatment. 10
students (Treatment group I) underwent calisthenics and special
games participation, 10 students (Treatment group II) underwent
aquatics and special games participation, 10 students (Treatment
group III) underwent yoga and special games participation. The subjects were tested on selected criterion variables prior (pre test)
and after twelve weeks of training (post test). The pre and post test
data collected from three groups on functional abilities(self care,
learning, capacity for independent living), psychomotor
variables(static balance, eye hand coordination, simple reaction time
test) and skill performance (bocce skill, badminton skill, table tennis
skill) were statistically examined for significant difference, by
applying the analysis ANACOVA. Whenever an 'F' ratio for
adjusted test was found to be significant for adjusted post test means,
Scheffe-s test was followed as a post-hoc test to determine which of
the paired mean differences was significant. The result of the study
showed that among under 14 age groups there was a significant improvement on selected criterion variables such as, Balance,
Coordination, self-care and learning and also in Bocce, Badminton & Table Tennis skill performance, due to mobility exercises and
participation in special games. However there were no significant
differences among the groups.
Abstract: Whit the increasing of traffic, noise emanated from
motor vehicles increases as well, which subsequently causes adding
to the stress of modern city. Thus, it is needed to look for most
critical areas in terms of environmental and social impact of noise.
There are several critical situations for noise emanated from motor
vehicles such as stop and go situation which usually occurs near
junctions or at-grade intersections. This study was conducted in two
locations, most common types of intersections, crossroads and Tjunctions.
The highest average noise levels are recorded during Go
phase for T-junction, 64.4 dB, and Drive phase for crossroad, 64 dB.
It implies that the existence of intersection caused the noise level to
increase. The vehicles starting to move produce more sound than
when they travel at a constant speed along the intersection. It is
suggested that special considerations and priority of allocating funds
should be given to these critical spots.
Abstract: In this paper, we deal with the Steiner tree problem
(STP) on a graph in which a fuzzy number, instead of a real number,
is assigned to each edge. We propose a modification of the shortest
paths approximation based on the fuzzy shortest paths (FSP)
evaluations. Since a fuzzy min operation using the extension
principle leads to nondominated solutions, we propose another
approach to solving the FSP using Cheng's centroid point fuzzy
ranking method.
Abstract: Scarcity of resources for biodiversity conservation gives rise to the need of strategic investment with priorities given to the cost of conservation. While the literature provides abundant methodological options for biodiversity conservation; estimating true cost of conservation remains abstract and simplistic, without recognising dynamic nature of the cost. Some recent works demonstrate the prominence of economic theory to inform biodiversity decisions, particularly on the costs and benefits of biodiversity however, the integration of the concept of true cost into biodiversity actions and planning are very slow to come by, and specially on a farm level. Conservation planning studies often use area as a proxy for costs neglecting different land values as well as protected areas. These literature consider only heterogeneous benefits while land costs are considered homogenous. Analysis with the assumption of cost homogeneity results in biased estimation; since not only it doesn’t address the true total cost of biodiversity actions and plans, but also it fails to screen out lands that are more (or less) expensive and/or difficult (or more suitable) for biodiversity conservation purposes, hindering validity and comparability of the results. Economies of scope” is one of the other most neglected aspects in conservation literature. The concept of economies of scope introduces the existence of cost complementarities within a multiple output production system and it suggests a lower cost during the concurrent production of multiple outputs by a given farm. If there are, indeed, economies of scope then simplistic representation of costs will tend to overestimate the true cost of conservation leading to suboptimal outcomes. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to provide first road review of the various theoretical ways in which economies of scope are likely to occur of how they might occur in conservation. Consequently, the paper addresses gaps that have to be filled in future analysis.
Abstract: Stochastic comparison has been an important
direction of research in various area. This can be done by the use of
the notion of stochastic ordering which gives qualitatitive rather than
purely quantitative estimation of the system under study. In this
paper we present applications of comparison based uncertainty
related to entropy in Reliability analysis, for example to design
better systems. These results can be used as a priori information in
simulation studies.
Abstract: The Malaysia Highway Authority (MHA) was
established by the Government in 1980 for the purpose of designing,
constructing and maintaining toll highways in Malaysia that include
the North-South Expressway and the Penang Bridge, which were
procured using the publicly-funded traditional procurement. However
following a recession in the mid 80-s, the operations of these tolledhighways
had been privatized to ensure that their operational services
continue through private financing as a result of long-term
concession agreement concurred between the Malaysian Government
and private operators. The change in the contract strategy for
highway projects in Malaysia would have a great tendency to dictate
a significant risk exposure towards the key parties involved,
particularly the Malaysian Government as project principal, unless
operational risks are clearly identified and managed via appropriate
mitigation measures prior to a contract signing.
This research identifies potential operational risks that have a
possibility to occur in highway projects in Malaysia from the
perspective of public sector clients. Since this research focuses on the
operational risks for highway projects in Malaysia, the initial results
acquired from literature review on the operational risks of highway
projects in some Asian countries are then justified by a number of
key individuals from the MHA through interviews. As a result,
among key operational risks that have possibility to occur in the
highway projects in Malaysia include initial toll-tariff decided by the
Government, traffic congestion, change of road network and overloaded
freight transportation, which could cause damage to the road
surface and hence affecting the operation of a particular highway.
Abstract: Tailor-welded Blanks (TWBs) are tailor made for
different complex component designs by welding multiple metal
sheets with different thicknesses, shapes, coatings or strengths prior
to forming. In this study the Hemispherical Die Stretching (HDS) test
(out-of-plane stretching) of TWBs were simulated via
ABAQUS/Explicit to obtain the Forming Limit Diagrams (FLDs) of
Stainless steel (AISI 304) laser welded blanks with different
thicknesses. Two criteria were used to detect the start of necking to
determine the FLD for TWBs and parent sheet metals. These two
criteria are the second derivatives of the major and thickness strains
that are given from the strain history of simulation. In the other word,
in these criteria necking starts when the second derivative of
thickness or major strain reaches its maximum. With having the time
of onset necking, one can measure the major and minor strains at the
critical area and determine the forming limit curve.
Abstract: Transnational corporations (TNCs) are playing a major role in global R&D, not only through activities in their home countries but also increasingly abroad. However, the process of R&D offshoring is not yet discussed thoroughly. Based on in-depth case study on Agilent China Communications Operation, this paper presents a stage model for theorizing the R&D offshoring process. This stage model outlines 5 maturity levels of organization and the offshoring process: Subsidiary team, Mirror team, Independent team, Mirror sector and the Independent sector (from software engineering point of view, it is similar to the local team's capability level of maturity model). Moreover, the paper gives a detailed discussion on the relevant characteristics, as well as the ability/responsibility of transfer, priorities and the corresponding organization structure. It also gives the characteristics and key points of different level-s R&D offshoring implementation using actual team practice.
Abstract: This paper presents the results of thermo-mechanical
characterization of Glass/Epoxy composite specimens using Infrared
Thermography technique. The specimens used for the study were
fabricated in-house with three different lay-up sequences and tested
on a servo hydraulic machine under uni-axial loading. Infrared
Camera was used for on-line monitoring surface temperature changes
of composite specimens during tensile deformation.
Experimental results showed that thermomechanical
characteristics of each type of specimens were distinct. Temperature
was found to be decreasing linearly with increasing tensile stress in
the elastic region due to thermo-elastic effect. Yield point could be
observed by monitoring the change in temperature profile during
tensile testing and this value could be correlated with the results
obtained from stress-strain response. The extent of prior plastic
deformation in the post-yield region influenced the slopes of
temperature response during tensile loading. Partial unloading and
reloading of specimens post-yield results in change in slope in elastic
and plastic regions of composite specimens.
