Abstract: Natural gas flow contains undesirable solid particles,
liquid condensation, and/or oil droplets and requires reliable
removing equipment to perform filtration. Recent natural gas
processing applications are demanded compactness and reliability of
process equipment. Since conventional means are sophisticated in
design, poor in efficiency, and continue lacking robust, a supersonic
nozzle has been introduced as an alternative means to meet such
demands.
A 3-D Convergent-Divergent Nozzle is simulated using
commercial Code for pressure ratio (NPR) varies from 1.2 to 2. Six
different shapes of nozzle are numerically examined to illustrate the
position of shock-wave as such spot could be considered as a
benchmark of particle separation. Rectangle, triangle, circular,
elliptical, pentagon, and hexagon nozzles are simulated using Fluent
Code with all have same cross-sectional area.
The simple one-dimensional inviscid theory does not describe the
actual features of fluid flow precisely as it ignores the impact of
nozzle configuration on the flow properties. CFD Simulation results,
however, show that nozzle geometry influences the flow structures
including location of shock wave.
The CFD analysis predicts shock appearance when p01/pa>1.2 for
almost all geometry and locates at the lower area ratio (Ae/At).
Simulation results showed that shock wave in Elliptical nozzle has
the farthest distance from the throat among the others at relatively
small NPR. As NPR increases, hexagon would be the farthest. The
numerical result is compared with available experimental data and
has shown good agreement in terms of shock location and flow
structure.
Abstract: A genetic algorithm (GA) based feature subset
selection algorithm is proposed in which the correlation structure of
the features is exploited. The subset of features is validated according
to the classification performance. Features derived from the
continuous wavelet transform are potentially strongly correlated.
GA-s that do not take the correlation structure of features into
account are inefficient. The proposed algorithm forms clusters of
correlated features and searches for a good candidate set of clusters.
Secondly a search within the clusters is performed. Different
simulations of the algorithm on a real-case data set with strong
correlations between features show the increased classification
performance. Comparison is performed with a standard GA without
use of the correlation structure.
Abstract: A novel design of two-wheeled robotic vehicle with moving payload is presented in this paper. A mathematical model describing the vehicle dynamics is derived and simulated in Matlab Simulink environment. Two control strategies were developed to stabilise the vehicle in the upright position. A robust Proportional- Integral-Derivative (PID) control strategy has been implemented and initially tested to measure the system performance, while the second control strategy is to use a hybrid fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The results are given on a comparative basis for the system performance in terms of disturbance rejection, control algorithms robustness as well as the control effort in terms of input torque.
Abstract: In the present study, a steady-state simulation model
has been developed to evaluate the system performance of a
transcritical carbon dioxide heat pump system for simultaneous water
cooling and heating. Both the evaporator (including both two-phase
and superheated zone) and gas cooler models consider the highly
variable heat transfer characteristics of CO2 and pressure drop. The
numerical simulation model of transcritical CO2 heat pump has been
validated by test data obtained from experiments on the heat pump
prototype. Comparison between the test results and the model
prediction for system COP variation with compressor discharge
pressure shows a modest agreement with a maximum deviation of
15% and the trends are fairly similar. Comparison for other operating
parameters also shows fairly similar deviation between the test
results and the model prediction. Finally, the simulation results are
presented to study the effects of operating parameters such as,
temperature of heat exchanger fluid at the inlet, discharge pressure,
compressor speed on system performance of CO2 heat pump, suitable
in a dairy plant where simultaneous cooling at 4oC and heating at
73oC are required. Results show that good heat transfer properties of
CO2 for both two-phase and supercritical region and efficient
compression process contribute a lot for high system COPs.
Abstract: In this paper, the Lennard -Jones potential is applied
to molecules of liquid argon as well as its vapor and platinum as solid
surface in order to perform a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics
simulation to study the microscopic aspects of liquid-vapor-solid
interactions. The channel is periodic in x and y directions and along z
direction it is bounded by atomic walls. It was found that density of
the liquids near the solid walls fluctuated greatly and that the
structure was more like a solid than a liquid. This indicates that the
interactions of solid and liquid molecules are very strong. The
resultant surface tension, liquid density and vapor density are found
to be well predicted when compared with the experimental data for
argon. Liquid and vapor densities were found to depend on the cutoff
radius which induces the use of P3M (particle-particle particle-mesh)
method which was implemented for evaluation of force and surface
tension.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel approach to finding a
priori interesting regions in mammograms. In order to delineate those
regions of interest (ROI-s) in mammograms, which appear to be
prominent, a topographic representation called the iso-level contour
map consisting of iso-level contours at multiple intensity levels and
region segmentation based-thresholding have been proposed. The
simulation results indicate that the computed boundary gives the
detection rate of 99.5% accuracy.
Abstract: In this research work, investigations are carried out on
Continuous Wave (CW) Nd:YAG laser welding system after
preliminary experimentation to understand the influencing parameters
associated with laser welding of AISI 304. The experimental
procedure involves a series of laser welding trials on AISI 304
stainless steel sheets with various combinations of process parameters
like beam power, beam incident angle and beam incident angle. An
industrial 2 kW CW Nd:YAG laser system, available at Welding
Research Institute (WRI), BHEL Tiruchirappalli, is used for
conducting the welding trials for this research. After proper tuning of
laser beam, laser welding experiments are conducted on AISI 304
grade sheets to evaluate the influence of various input parameters on
weld bead geometry i.e. bead width (BW) and depth of penetration
(DOP). From the laser welding results, it is noticed that the beam
power and welding speed are the two influencing parameters on
depth and width of the bead. Three dimensional finite element
simulation of high density heat source have been performed for laser
welding technique using finite element code ANSYS for predicting
the temperature profile of laser beam heat source on AISI 304
stainless steel sheets. The temperature dependent material properties
for AISI 304 stainless steel are taken into account in the simulation,
which has a great influence in computing the temperature profiles.
The latent heat of fusion is considered by the thermal enthalpy of
material for calculation of phase transition problem. A Gaussian
distribution of heat flux using a moving heat source with a conical
shape is used for analyzing the temperature profiles. Experimental
and simulated values for weld bead profiles are analyzed for stainless
steel material for different beam power, welding speed and beam
incident angle. The results obtained from the simulation are
compared with those from the experimental data and it is observed
that the results of numerical analysis (FEM) are in good agreement
with experimental results, with an overall percentage of error
estimated to be within ±6%.
Abstract: Bidding is a very important business function to find
latent contractors of construction projects. Moreover, bid markup is
one of the most important decisions for a bidder to gain a reasonable
profit. Since the bidding system is a complex adaptive system, bidding
agent need a learning process to get more valuable knowledge for a bid,
especially from past public bidding information. In this paper, we
proposed an iterative agent leaning model for bidders to make markup
decisions. A classifier for public bidding information named PIBS is
developed to make full use of history data for classifying new bidding
information. The simulation and experimental study is performed to
show the validity of the proposed classifier. Some factors that affect
the validity of PIBS are also analyzed at the end of this work.
Abstract: Laser Profiler (LP) data from aerial laser surveys have
been increasingly used as topographical inputs to numerical
simulations of flooding and inundation in river basins. LP data has
great potential for reproducing topography, but its effective usage has
not yet been fully established. In this study, flooding and inundation
are simulated numerically using LP data for the Jobaru River basin of
Japan’s Saga Plain. The analysis shows that the topography is
reproduced satisfactorily in the computational domain with urban and
agricultural areas requiring different grid sizes. A 2-D numerical
simulation shows that flood flow behavior changes as grid size is
varied.
Abstract: This paper reviews various approaches that have been
used for the modeling and simulation of large-scale engineering
systems and determines their appropriateness in the development of a
RICS modeling and simulation tool. Bond graphs, linear graphs,
block diagrams, differential and difference equations, modeling
languages, cellular automata and agents are reviewed. This tool
should be based on linear graph representation and supports symbolic
programming, functional programming, the development of noncausal
models and the incorporation of decentralized approaches.
Abstract: Fast forecasting of stock market prices is very important for
strategic planning. In this paper, a new approach for fast forecasting of
stock market prices is presented. Such algorithm uses new high speed
time delay neural networks (HSTDNNs). The operation of these
networks relies on performing cross correlation in the frequency
domain between the input data and the input weights of neural
networks. It is proved mathematically and practically that the number
of computation steps required for the presented HSTDNNs is less
than that needed by traditional time delay neural networks
(TTDNNs). Simulation results using MATLAB confirm the
theoretical computations.
Abstract: In recent years, the research in wireless sensor
network has increased steadily, and many studies were focusing on
reducing energy consumption of sensor nodes to extend their lifetimes.
In this paper, the issue of energy consumption is investigated and two
adaptive mechanisms are proposed to extend the network lifetime.
This study uses high-energy-first scheme to determine cluster heads
for data transmission. Thus, energy consumption in each cluster is
balanced and network lifetime can be extended. In addition, this study
uses cluster merging and dynamic routing mechanisms to further
reduce energy consumption during data transmission. The simulation
results show that the proposed method can effectively extend the
lifetime of wireless sensor network, and it is suitable for different base
station locations.
Abstract: We consider optimal channel equalization for MIMO
(multi-input/multi-output) time-varying channels in the sense of
MMSE (minimum mean-squared-error), where the observation noise
can be non-stationary. We show that all ZF (zero-forcing) receivers
can be parameterized in an affine form which eliminates completely
the ISI (inter-symbol-interference), and optimal channel equalizers
can be designed through minimization of the MSE (mean-squarederror)
between the detected signals and the transmitted signals,
among all ZF receivers. We demonstrate that the optimal channel
equalizer is a modified Kalman filter, and show that under the AWGN
(additive white Gaussian noise) assumption, the proposed optimal
channel equalizer minimizes the BER (bit error rate) among all
possible ZF receivers. Our results are applicable to optimal channel
equalization for DWMT (discrete wavelet multitone), multirate transmultiplexers,
OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing),
and DS (direct sequence) CDMA (code division multiple access)
wireless data communication systems. A design algorithm for optimal
channel equalization is developed, and several simulation examples
are worked out to illustrate the proposed design algorithm.
Abstract: There are very complex communication systems, as
the multifunction radar, MFAR (Multi-Function Array Radar), where
functions are integrated all together, and simultaneously are
performed the classic functions of tracking and surveillance, as all
the functions related to the communication, countermeasures, and
calibration. All these functions are divided into the tasks to execute.
The task scheduler is a key element of the radar, since it does the
planning and distribution of energy and time resources to be shared
and used by all tasks. This paper presents schedulers based on the use
of multiple queue. Several schedulers have been designed and
studied, and it has been made a comparative analysis of different
performed schedulers. The tests and experiments have been done by
means of system software simulation. Finally a suitable set of radar
characteristics has been selected to evaluate the behavior of the task
scheduler working.
Abstract: The application of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) controller to improve the transient stability performance of a power system is thoroughly investigated in this paper. The design problem of SSSC controller is formulated as an optimization problem and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Technique is employed to search for optimal controller parameters. By minimizing the time-domain based objective function, in which the deviation in the oscillatory rotor angle of the generator is involved; transient stability performance of the system is improved. The proposed controller is tested on a weakly connected power system subjected to different severe disturbances. The non-linear simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller and its ability to provide efficient damping of low frequency oscillations. It is also observed that the proposed SSSC controller improves greatly the voltage profile of the system under severe disturbances.
Abstract: Since the actuator capacity is limited, in the real
application of active control systems under sever earthquakes it is
conceivable that the actuators saturate, hence the actuator saturation
should be considered as a constraint in design of optimal controllers.
In this paper optimal design of active controllers for nonlinear
structures by considering actuator saturation, has been studied. The
proposed method for designing optimal controllers is based on
defining an optimization problem which the objective has been to
minimize the maximum displacement of structure when a limited
capacity for actuator has been used. To this end a single degree of
freedom (SDF) structure with a bilinear hysteretic behavior has been
simulated under a white noise ground acceleration of different
amplitudes. Active tendon control mechanism, comprised of prestressed
tendons and an actuator, and extended nonlinear Newmark
method based instantaneous optimal control algorithm have been
used. To achieve the best results, the weights corresponding to
displacement, velocity, acceleration and control force in the
performance index have been optimized by the Distributed Genetic
Algorithm (DGA). Results show the effectiveness of the proposed
method in considering actuator saturation. Also based on the
numerical simulations it can be concluded that the actuator capacity
and the average value of required control force are two important
factors in designing nonlinear controllers which consider the actuator
saturation.
Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study on two most
popular control strategies for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
(PMSM) drives: field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque
control (DTC). The comparison is based on various criteria including
basic control characteristics, dynamic performance, and
implementation complexity. The study is done by simulation using
the Simulink Power System Blockset that allows a complete
representation of the power section (inverter and PMSM) and the
control system. The simulation and evaluation of both control
strategies are performed using actual parameters of Permanent
Magnet Synchronous Motor fed by an IGBT PWM inverter.
Abstract: Time delay in bilateral teleoperation system was
introduced as a sufficient reason to make the system unstable or
certainly degrade the system performance. In this paper, simulations
and experimental results of implementing p-like control scheme,
under different ranges of variable time delay, will be presented to
verify a certain criteria, which guarantee the system stability and
position tracking. The system consists of two Phantom premium 1.5A
devices. One of them acts as a master and the other acts as a slave.
The study includes deriving the Phantom kinematic and dynamic
model, establishing the link between the two Phantoms over
Simulink in Matlab, and verifying the stability criteria with
simulations and real experiments.
Abstract: Today, numerical simulation is a powerful tool to
solve various hydraulic engineering problems. The aim of this
research is numerical solutions of shallow water equations using
finite volume method for Simulations of dam break over wet and dry
bed. In order to solve Riemann problem, Roe-s approximate solver is
used. To evaluate numerical model, simulation was done in 1D and
2D states. In 1D state, two dam break test over dry bed (with and
without friction) were studied. The results showed that Structural
failure around the dam and damage to the downstream constructions
in bed without friction is more than friction bed. In 2D state, two
tests for wet and dry beds were done. Generally in wet bed case,
waves are propagated to canal sides but in dry bed it is not
significant. Therefore, damage to the storage facilities and
agricultural lands in wet bed case is more than in dry bed.
Abstract: The paper is concerned with developing stochastic delay mechanisms for efficient multicast protocols and for smooth mobile handover processes which are capable of preserving a given Quality of Service (QoS). In both applications the participating entities (receiver nodes or subscribers) sample a stochastic timer and generate load after a random delay. In this way, the load on the networking resources is evenly distributed which helps to maintain QoS communication. The optimal timer distributions have been sought in different p.d.f. families (e.g. exponential, power law and radial basis function) and the optimal parameter have been found in a recursive manner. Detailed simulations have demonstrated the improvement in performance both in the case of multicast and mobile handover applications.
