the significance at .05.
Abstract: Document image processing has become an
increasingly important technology in the automation of office
documentation tasks. During document scanning, skew is inevitably
introduced into the incoming document image. Since the algorithm
for layout analysis and character recognition are generally very
sensitive to the page skew. Hence, skew detection and correction in
document images are the critical steps before layout analysis. In this
paper, a novel skew detection method is presented for binary
document images. The method considered the some selected
characters of the text which may be subjected to thinning and Hough
transform to estimate skew angle accurately. Several experiments
have been conducted on various types of documents such as
documents containing English Documents, Journals, Text-Book,
Different Languages and Document with different fonts, Documents
with different resolutions, to reveal the robustness of the proposed
method. The experimental results revealed that the proposed method
is accurate compared to the results of well-known existing methods.
Abstract: A study of the obtainable watermark data rate for information hiding algorithms is presented in this paper. As the perceptual entropy for wideband monophonic audio signals is in the range of four to five bits per sample, a significant amount of additional information can be inserted into signal without causing any perceptual distortion. Experimental results showed that transform domain watermark embedding outperforms considerably watermark embedding in time domain and that signal decompositions with a high gain of transform coding, like the wavelet transform, are the most suitable for high data rate information hiding. Keywords?Digital watermarking, information hiding, audio watermarking, watermark data rate.
Abstract: A boundary layer wind tunnel facility has been
adopted in order to conduct experimental measurements of the flow field around a model of the Panorama Giustinelli Building, Trieste
(Italy). Information on the main flow structures has been obtained by means of flow visualization techniques and has been compared to the
numerical predictions of the vortical structures spread on top of the roof, in order to investigate the optimal positioning for a vertical-axis
wind energy conversion system, registering a good agreement between experimental measurements and numerical predictions.
Abstract: The plastic forming process of sheet plate takes an
important place in forming metals. The traditional techniques of tool
design for sheet forming operations used in industry are experimental
and expensive methods. Prediction of the forming results,
determination of the punching force, blank holder forces and the
thickness distribution of the sheet metal will decrease the production
cost and time of the material to be formed. In this paper, multi-stage
deep drawing simulation of an Industrial Part has been presented
with finite element method. The entire production steps with
additional operations such as intermediate annealing and springback
has been simulated by ABAQUS software under axisymmetric
conditions. The simulation results such as sheet thickness
distribution, Punch force and residual stresses have been extracted in
any stages and sheet thickness distribution was compared with
experimental results. It was found through comparison of results, the
FE model have proven to be in close agreement with those of
experiment.
Abstract: The background estimation approach using a small
window median filter is presented on the bases of analyzing IR point
target, noise and clutter model. After simplifying the two-dimensional
filter, a simple method of adopting one-dimensional median filter is
illustrated to make estimations of background according to the
characteristics of IR scanning system. The adaptive threshold is used
to segment canceled image in the background. Experimental results
show that the algorithm achieved good performance and satisfy the
requirement of big size image-s real-time processing.
Abstract: The acidity of different raw Jordanian clays
containing zeolite, bentonite, red and white kaolinite and diatomite
was characterized by means of temperature programmed desorption
(TPD) of ammonia, conversion of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBOH),
FTIR and BET-measurements. FTIR spectra proved presence of
silanol and bridged hydroxyls on the clay surface. The number of
acidic sites was calculated from experimental TPD-profiles. We
observed the decrease of surface acidity correlates with the decrease
of Si/Al ratio except for diatomite. On the TPD-plot for zeolite two
maxima were registered due to different strength of surface acidic
sites. Values of MBOH conversion, product yields and selectivity
were calculated for the catalysis on Jordanian clays. We obtained that
all clay samples are able to convert MBOH into a major product
which is 3-methyl-3-buten-1-yne (MBYNE) catalyzed by acid
surface sites with the selectivity close to 70%. There was found a
correlation between MBOH conversion and acidity of clays
determined by TPD-NH3, i.e. the higher the acidity the higher the
conversion of MBOH. However, diatomite provided the lowest
conversion of MBOH as result of poor polarization of silanol groups.
Comparison of surface areas and conversions revealed the highest
density of active sites for red kaolinite and the lowest for zeolite and
diatomite.
Abstract: This paper presents the design, analysis and
development of permanent magnet (PM) torque couplers. These
couplers employ rare-earth magnets. Based on finite element analysis
and earlier analytical works both concentric and face-type
synchronous type couplers have been designed and fabricated. The
experimental performance has good correlation with finite element
calculations.
Abstract: Given a parallel program to be executed on a heterogeneous
computing system, the overall execution time of the program
is determined by a schedule. In this paper, we analyze the worst-case
performance of the list scheduling algorithm for scheduling tasks
of a parallel program in a mixed-machine heterogeneous computing
system such that the total execution time of the program is minimized.
We prove tight lower and upper bounds for the worst-case
performance ratio of the list scheduling algorithm. We also examine
the average-case performance of the list scheduling algorithm. Our
experimental data reveal that the average-case performance of the list
scheduling algorithm is much better than the worst-case performance
and is very close to optimal, except for large systems with large
heterogeneity. Thus, the list scheduling algorithm is very useful in
real applications.
Abstract: The stilling basins are commonly used to dissipate the
energy and protect the downstream floor from erosion. The aim of
the present experimental work is to improve the roughened stilling
basin using T-shape roughness instead of the regular cubic one and
design this new shape. As a result of the present work the best
intensity and the best roughness length are identified. Also, it is
found that the T-shape roughness save materials and reduce the jump
length compared to the cubic one. Sensitivity analysis was performed
and it was noticed that the change in the length of jump is more
sensitive to the change in roughness length than the change in
intensity.
Abstract: This paper presents a threshold voltage model of pocket implanted sub-100 nm n-MOSFETs incorporating the drain and substrate bias effects using two linear pocket profiles. Two linear equations are used to simulate the pocket profiles along the channel at the surface from the source and drain edges towards the center of the n-MOSFET. Then the effective doping concentration is derived and is used in the threshold voltage equation that is obtained by solving the Poisson-s equation in the depletion region at the surface. Simulated threshold voltages for various gate lengths fit well with the experimental data already published in the literature. The simulated result is compared with the two other pocket profiles used to derive the threshold voltage models of n-MOSFETs. The comparison shows that the linear model has a simple compact form that can be utilized to study and characterize the pocket implanted advanced ULSI devices.

was conducted for investigating damage evolution of piles inside
liquefied soil, are numerically simulated and experimental verified by the3D nonlinear finite element analysis. Damage evolution of
elasto-plastic circular steel piles and reinforced concrete (RC) one with cracking and yield of reinforcement are focused on, and the failure patterns and residual damages are captured by the proposed constitutive models. The superstructure excitation behind quay wall is
reproduced as well.
Abstract: The vast amount of information on the World Wide
Web is created and published by many different types of providers.
Unlike books and journals, most of this information is not subject to
editing or peer review by experts. This lack of quality control and the
explosion of web sites make the task of finding quality information
on the web especially critical. Meanwhile new facilities for
producing web pages such as Blogs make this issue more significant
because Blogs have simple content management tools enabling nonexperts
to build easily updatable web diaries or online journals. On
the other hand despite a decade of active research in information
quality (IQ) there is no framework for measuring information quality
on the Blogs yet. This paper presents a novel experimental
framework for ranking quality of information on the Weblog. The
results of data analysis revealed seven IQ dimensions for the Weblog.
For each dimension, variables and related coefficients were
calculated so that presented framework is able to assess IQ of
Weblogs automatically.
Abstract: Friction-stir welding has received a huge interest in the last few years. The many advantages of this promising process have led researchers to present different theoretical and experimental explanation of the process. The way to quantitatively and qualitatively control the different parameters of the friction-stir welding process has not been paved. In this study, a refined energybased model that estimates the energy generated due to friction and plastic deformation is presented. The effect of the plastic deformation at low energy levels is significant and hence a scale factor is introduced to control its effect. The predicted heat energy and the obtained maximum temperature using our model are compared to the theoretical and experimental results available in the literature and a good agreement is obtained. The model is applied to AA6000 and AA7000 series.
Abstract: Experimental investigations were made on the instability of supercritical kerosene flowing in active cooling channels. Two approaches were used to control the pressure in the channel. One is the back-pressure valve while the other is the venturi. In both conditions, a kind of low-frequency oscillation of pressure and temperature is observed. And the oscillation periods are calculated. By comparison with the flow time, it is concluded that the instability occurred in active cooling channels is probably one kind of density wave instability. And its period has no relationship with the cooling channel geometry, nor the pressure, but only depends on the flow time of kerosene in active cooling channels. When the mass flow rate, density and pressure drop couple with each other, the density wave instability will appear.
Abstract: Tumor classification is a key area of research in the
field of bioinformatics. Microarray technology is commonly used in
the study of disease diagnosis using gene expression levels. The
main drawback of gene expression data is that it contains thousands
of genes and a very few samples. Feature selection methods are used
to select the informative genes from the microarray. These methods
considerably improve the classification accuracy. In the proposed
method, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used for effective feature
selection. Informative genes are identified based on the T-Statistics,
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and F-Test values. The initial candidate
solutions of GA are obtained from top-m informative genes. The
classification accuracy of k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) method is used
as the fitness function for GA. In this work, kNN and Support Vector
Machine (SVM) are used as the classifiers. The experimental results
show that the proposed work is suitable for effective feature
selection. With the help of the selected genes, GA-kNN method
achieves 100% accuracy in 4 datasets and GA-SVM method
achieves in 5 out of 10 datasets. The GA with kNN and SVM
methods are demonstrated to be an accurate method for microarray
based tumor classification.
Abstract: This study describes a micro device integrated with
multi-chamber for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with different
annealing temperatures. The device consists of the reaction
polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chip, a cover glass chip, and is
equipped with cartridge heaters, fans, and thermocouples for
temperature control. In this prototype, commercial software is utilized
to determine the geometric and operational parameters those are
responsible for creating the denaturation, annealing, and extension
temperatures within the chip. Two cartridge heaters are placed at two
sides of the chip and maintained at two different temperatures to
achieve a thermal gradient on the chip during the annealing step. The
temperatures on the chip surface are measured via an infrared imager.
Some thermocouples inserted into the reaction chambers are used to
obtain the transient temperature profiles of the reaction chambers
during several thermal cycles. The experimental temperatures
compared to the simulated results show a similar trend. This work
should be interesting to persons involved in the high-temperature
based reactions and genomics or cell analysis.
Abstract: It has become crucial over the years for nations to
improve their credit scoring methods and techniques in light of the
increasing volatility of the global economy. Statistical methods or
tools have been the favoured means for this; however artificial
intelligence or soft computing based techniques are becoming
increasingly preferred due to their proficient and precise nature and
relative simplicity. This work presents a comparison between Support
Vector Machines and Artificial Neural Networks two popular soft
computing models when applied to credit scoring. Amidst the
different criteria-s that can be used for comparisons; accuracy,
computational complexity and processing times are the selected
criteria used to evaluate both models. Furthermore the German credit
scoring dataset which is a real world dataset is used to train and test
both developed models. Experimental results obtained from our study
suggest that although both soft computing models could be used with
a high degree of accuracy, Artificial Neural Networks deliver better
results than Support Vector Machines.
Abstract: In view of geological origin, formation of the shallow
gas reservoir of the Hangzhou Bay, northern Zhejiang Province,
eastern China, and original occurrence characteristics of the gassy
sand are analyzed. Generally, gassy sand in scale gas reservoirs is in
the state of residual moisture content and the approximate scope of
initial matric suction of sand ranges about from 0kPa to100kPa.
Results based on GDS triaxial tests show that the classical shear
strength formulas of unsaturated soil can not effectively describe basic
strength characteristics of gassy sand; the relationship between
apparent cohesion and matric suction of gassy sand agrees well with
the power function, which can reasonably be used to describe the
strength of gassy sand. In the stress path of gas release, shear strength
of gassy sand will increase and experimental results show the formula
proposed in this paper can effectively predict the strength increment.
When saturated strength indexes of the sand are used in engineering
design, moderate reduction should be considered.
Abstract: Various formal and informal brand alliances are being formed in professional service firms. Professional service corporate brand is heavily dependent on brands of professional employees who comprise them, and professional employee brands are in turn dependent on the corporate brand. Prior work provides limited scientific evidence of brand alliance effects in professional service area – i.e., how professional service corporate-employee brand allies are affected by an alliance, what are brand attitude effects after alliance formation and how these effects vary with different strengths of an ally. Scientific literature analysis and theoretical modeling are the main methods of the current study. As a result, a theoretical model is constructed for estimating spillover effects of professional service corporate-employee brand alliances and for comparison among different professional service firm expertise practice models – from “brains" to “procedure" model. The resulting theoretical model lays basis for future experimental studies.
