Abstract: The database reverse engineering problems and
solving processes are getting mature, even though, the academic
community is facing the complex problem of knowledge transfer,
both in university and industrial contexts. This paper presents a new
CASE tool developed at the University of Jordan which addresses an
efficient support of this transfer, namely UJ-CASE-TOOL. It is a
small and self-contained application exhibiting representative
problems and appropriate solutions that can be understood in a
limited time. It presents an algorithm that describes the developed
academic CASE tool which has been used for several years both as
an illustration of the principles of database reverse engineering and
as an exercise aimed at academic and industrial students.
Abstract: With advances in computer vision, non-contact gaze tracking systems are heading towards being much easier to operate and more comfortable for use, the technique proposed in this paper is specially designed for achieving these goals. For the convenience in operation, the proposal aims at the system with simple configuration which is composed of a fixed wide angle camera and dual infrared illuminators. Then in order to enhance the usability of the system based on single camera, a self-adjusting method which is called Real-time gaze Tracking Algorithm with head movement Compensation (RTAC) is developed for estimating the gaze direction under natural head movement and simplifying the calibration procedure at the same time. According to the actual evaluations, the average accuracy of about 1° is achieved over a field of 20×15×15 cm3.
Abstract: The solution algorithm, based on Lagrangian relaxation, a sub-gradient method and a heuristic to find the upper bound of the solution, is proposed to solve the coordinated fleet routing and flight scheduling problems. Numerical tests are performed to evaluate the proposed algorithm using real operating data from two Taiwan airlines. The test results indicate that the solution algorithm is a significant improvement over those obtained with CPLEX, consequently they could be useful for allied airlines to solve coordinated fleet routing and flight scheduling problems.

Abstract: The growth and interconnection of power networks in many regions has invited complicated techniques for energy management services (EMS). State estimation techniques become a powerful tool in power system control centers, and that more information is required to achieve the objective of EMS. For the online state estimator, assuming the continuous time is equidistantly sampled with period Δt, processing events must be finished within this period. Advantage of Kalman Filtering (KF) algorithm in using system information to improve the estimation precision is utilized. Computational power is a major issue responsible for the achievement of the objective, i.e. estimators- solution at a small sampled period. This paper presents the optimum utilization of processors in a state estimator based on KF. The model used is presented using Petri net (PN) theory.
Abstract: This Paper presents a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for determining the optimal proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller parameters, for speed control of a linear brushless DC motor. The proposed approach has superior features, including easy implementation, stable convergence characteristic and good computational efficiency. The brushless DC motor is modelled in Simulink and the PSO algorithm is implemented in MATLAB. Comparing with Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method, the proposed method was more efficient in improving the step response characteristics such as, reducing the steady-states error; rise time, settling time and maximum overshoot in speed control of a linear brushless DC motor.
Abstract: A considerable amount of energy is consumed during
transmission and reception of messages in a wireless mesh network
(WMN). Reducing per-node transmission power would greatly
increase the network lifetime via power conservation in addition to
increasing the network capacity via better spatial bandwidth reuse. In
this work, the problem of topology control in a hybrid WMN of
heterogeneous wireless devices with varying maximum transmission
ranges is considered. A localized distributed topology control
algorithm is presented which calculates the optimal transmission
power so that (1) network connectivity is maintained (2) node
transmission power is reduced to cover only the nearest neighbours
(3) networks lifetime is extended. Simulations and analysis of results
are carried out in the NS-2 environment to demonstrate the
correctness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Abstract: Functioning of a biometric system in large part
depends on the performance of the similarity measure function.
Frequently a generalized similarity distance measure function such as
Euclidian distance or Mahalanobis distance is applied to the task of
matching biometric feature vectors. However, often accuracy of a
biometric system can be greatly improved by designing a customized
matching algorithm optimized for a particular biometric application.
In this paper we propose a tailored similarity measure function for
behavioral biometric systems based on the expert knowledge of the
feature level data in the domain. We compare performance of a
proposed matching algorithm to that of other well known similarity
distance functions and demonstrate its superiority with respect to the
chosen domain.
Abstract: This paper presents a fuzzy control system for a three degree of freedom (3-DOF) stabilized platform with explicit decoupling scheme. The system under consideration is a system with strong interactions between three channels. By using the concept of decentralized control, a control structure is developed that is composed of three control loops, each of which is associated with a single-variable fuzzy controller and a decoupling unit. Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy control algorithm is used to implement the fuzzy controller. The decoupling units design is based on the adaptive theory reasoning. Simulation tests were established using Simulink of Matlab. The obtained results have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Simulation results are represented in this paper.
Abstract: Classification of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals
extracted during mental tasks is a technique that is actively pursued
for Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) designs. In this paper, we
compared the classification performances of univariateautoregressive
(AR) and multivariate autoregressive (MAR) models
for representing EEG signals that were extracted during different
mental tasks. Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN)
trained by the backpropagation (BP) algorithm was used to classify
these features into the different categories representing the mental
tasks. Classification performances were also compared across
different mental task combinations and 2 sets of hidden units (HU): 2
to 10 HU in steps of 2 and 20 to 100 HU in steps of 20. Five different
mental tasks from 4 subjects were used in the experimental study and
combinations of 2 different mental tasks were studied for each
subject. Three different feature extraction methods with 6th order
were used to extract features from these EEG signals: AR
coefficients computed with Burg-s algorithm (ARBG), AR
coefficients computed with stepwise least square algorithm (ARLS)
and MAR coefficients computed with stepwise least square
algorithm. The best results were obtained with 20 to 100 HU using
ARBG. It is concluded that i) it is important to choose the suitable
mental tasks for different individuals for a successful BCI design, ii)
higher HU are more suitable and iii) ARBG is the most suitable
feature extraction method.
Abstract: This paper presents a subjective job scheduler based
on a 3-layer Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) and a greedy
alignment procedure in order formulates a real-life situation. The
BPNN estimates critical values of jobs based on the given subjective
criteria. The scheduler is formulated in such a way that, at each time
period, the most critical job is selected from the job queue and is
transferred into a single machine before the next periodic job arrives.
If the selected job is one of the oldest jobs in the queue and its
deadline is less than that of the arrival time of the current job, then
there is an update of the deadline of the job is assigned in order to
prevent the critical job from its elimination. The proposed
satisfiability criteria indicates that the satisfaction of the scheduler
with respect to performance of the BPNN, validity of the jobs and the
feasibility of the scheduler.
Abstract: Power System Security is a major concern in real time
operation. Conventional method of security evaluation consists of
performing continuous load flow and transient stability studies by
simulation program. This is highly time consuming and infeasible
for on-line application. Pattern Recognition (PR) is a promising
tool for on-line security evaluation. This paper proposes a Support
Vector Machine (SVM) based binary classification for static and
transient security evaluation. The proposed SVM based PR approach
is implemented on New England 39 Bus and IEEE 57 Bus systems.
The simulation results of SVM classifier is compared with the other
classifier algorithms like Method of Least Squares (MLS), Multi-
Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)
classifiers.
Abstract: Concurrency and synchronization are becoming big
issues as every new PC comes with multi-core processors. A major
reason for Object-Oriented Programming originally was to enable
easier reuse: encode your algorithm into a class and thoroughly
debug it, then you can reuse the class again and again. However,
when we get to concurrency and synchronization, this is often not
possible. Thread-safety issues means that synchronization constructs
need to be entangled into every class involved. We contributed a
detailed literature review of issues and challenges in concurrent
programming and present a methodology that uses the Aspect-
Oriented paradigm to address this problem. Aspects will allow us to
extract the synchronization concerns as schemes to be “weaved in"
later into the main code. This allows the aspects to be separately
tested and verified. Hence, the functional components can be weaved
with reusable synchronization schemes that are robust and scalable.
Abstract: In this paper, numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of disturbance block on flow field of the classical square lid-driven cavity. Attentions are focused on vortex formation and studying the effect of block position on its structure. Corner vortices are different upon block position and new vortices are produced because of the block. Finite volume method is used to solve Navier-Stokes equations and PISO algorithm is employed for the linkage of velocity and pressure. Verification and grid independency of results are reported. Stream lines are sketched to visualize vortex structure in different block positions.
Abstract: Since the presentation of the backpropagation algorithm, a vast variety of improvements of the technique for training a feed forward neural networks have been proposed. This article focuses on two classes of acceleration techniques, one is known as Local Adaptive Techniques that are based on weightspecific only, such as the temporal behavior of the partial derivative of the current weight. The other, known as Dynamic Adaptation Methods, which dynamically adapts the momentum factors, α, and learning rate, η, with respect to the iteration number or gradient. Some of most popular learning algorithms are described. These techniques have been implemented and tested on several problems and measured in terms of gradient and error function evaluation, and percentage of success. Numerical evidence shows that these techniques improve the convergence of the Backpropagation algorithm.
Abstract: Internet Access Technologies (IAT) provide a means
through which Internet can be accessed. The choice of a suitable
Internet technology is increasingly becoming an important issue to
ISP clients. Currently, the choice of IAT is based on discretion and
intuition of the concerned managers and the reliance on ISPs. In this
paper we propose a model and designs algorithms that are used in the
Internet access technology specification. In the proposed model, three
ranking approaches are introduced; concurrent ranking, stepwise
ranking and weighted ranking. The model ranks the IAT based on
distance measures computed in ascending order while the global
ranking system assigns weights to each IAT according to the position
held in each ranking technique, determines the total weight of a
particular IAT and ranks them in descending order. The final output
is an objective ranking of IAT in descending order.
Abstract: To create a solution for a specific problem in machine
learning, the solution is constructed from the data or by use a search
method. Genetic algorithms are a model of machine learning that can
be used to find nearest optimal solution. While the great advantage of
genetic algorithms is the fact that they find a solution through
evolution, this is also the biggest disadvantage. Evolution is inductive,
in nature life does not evolve towards a good solution but it evolves
away from bad circumstances. This can cause a species to evolve into
an evolutionary dead end. In order to reduce the effect of this
disadvantage we propose a new a learning tool (criteria) which can be
included into the genetic algorithms generations to compare the
previous population and the current population and then decide
whether is effective to continue with the previous population or the
current population, the proposed learning tool is called as Keeping
Efficient Population (KEP). We applied a GA based on KEP to the
production line layout problem, as a result KEP keep the evaluation
direction increases and stops any deviation in the evaluation.
Abstract: This paper presents an approach for the determination of the optimal cutting parameters (spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut and engagement) leading to minimum surface roughness in face milling of high silicon stainless steel by coupling neural network (NN) and Electromagnetism-like Algorithm (EM). In this regard, the advantages of statistical experimental design technique, experimental measurements, artificial neural network, and Electromagnetism-like optimization method are exploited in an integrated manner. To this end, numerous experiments on this stainless steel were conducted to obtain surface roughness values. A predictive model for surface roughness is created by using a back propogation neural network, then the optimization problem was solved by using EM optimization. Additional experiments were performed to validate optimum surface roughness value predicted by EM algorithm. It is clearly seen that a good agreement is observed between the predicted values by EM coupled with feed forward neural network and experimental measurements. The obtained results show that the EM algorithm coupled with back propogation neural network is an efficient and accurate method in approaching the global minimum of surface roughness in face milling.
Abstract: Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) are useful data
structures for symbolic Boolean manipulations. BDDs are used in
many tasks in VLSI/CAD, such as equivalence checking, property
checking, logic synthesis, and false paths. In this paper we describe a
new approach for the realization of a BDD package. To perform
manipulations of Boolean functions, the proposed approach does not
depend on the recursive synthesis operation of the IF-Then-Else
(ITE). Instead of using the ITE operation, the basic synthesis
algorithm is done using Boolean NOR operation.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is the introduction to a
unified optimization framework for research and education. The
OPTILIB framework implements different general purpose algorithms
for combinatorial optimization and minimum search on standard continuous
test functions. The preferences of this library are the straightforward
integration of new optimization algorithms and problems
as well as the visualization of the optimization process of different
methods exploring the search space exclusively or for the real time
visualization of different methods in parallel. Further the usage of
several implemented methods is presented on the basis of two use
cases, where the focus is especially on the algorithm visualization.
First it is demonstrated how different methods can be compared
conveniently using OPTILIB on the example of different iterative
improvement schemes for the TRAVELING SALESMAN PROBLEM.
A second study emphasizes how the framework can be used to find
global minima in the continuous domain.
