Abstract: Extended surfaces are commonly used in practice to enhance heat transfer. Most of the engineering problems require high performance heat transfer components with light weight, volumes, accommodating shapes, costs and reliability depending on industrial applications. This paper reports an experimental analysis to investigate heat transfer enhancement by forced convection using different sizes of pin-fin with rectangular slots at the center. The cross sectional area of the oblong duct was 200 mm x 80 mm. The info utilized in performance analysis was obtained experimentally for material, aluminum at 200 Watts heat input varying velocity 1 m/s to 5 m/s. Using the Taguchi experimental design method, optimum design parameters and their levels were analysed. Nusselt number and friction factor were considered as a performance characteristic parameter. An An L9 (33) orthogonal array was designated as an experimental proposal. Optimum results were found by experimenting. It is observed that pin-fins with different slots sizes have a better impact on Nusselt Number.
Abstract: Almost all of the domestic refrigerators operate on the principle of the vapor compression refrigeration cycle and removal of heat from the refrigerator cabinets is done via one of the two methods: natural convection or forced convection. In this study, airflow and temperature distributions inside a 375L no-frost type larder cabinet, in which cooling is provided by forced convection, are evaluated both experimentally and numerically. Airflow rate, compressor capacity and temperature distribution in the cooling chamber are known to be some of the most important factors that affect the cooling performance and energy consumption of a refrigerator. The objective of this study is to evaluate the original temperature distribution in the larder cabinet, and investigate for better temperature distribution solutions throughout the refrigerator domain via system optimizations that could provide uniform temperature distribution. The flow visualization and airflow velocity measurements inside the original refrigerator are performed via Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV). In addition, airflow and temperature distributions are investigated numerically with Ansys Fluent. In order to study the heat transfer inside the aforementioned refrigerator, forced convection theories covering the following cases are applied: closed rectangular cavity representing heat transfer inside the refrigerating compartment. The cavity volume has been represented with finite volume elements and is solved computationally with appropriate momentum and energy equations (Navier-Stokes equations). The 3D model is analyzed as transient, with k-ε turbulence model and SIMPLE pressure-velocity coupling for turbulent flow situation. The results obtained with the 3D numerical simulations are in quite good agreement with the experimental airflow measurements using the SPIV technique. After Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the baseline case, the effects of three parameters: compressor capacity, fan rotational speed and type of shelf (glass or wire) are studied on the energy consumption; pull down time, temperature distributions in the cabinet. For each case, energy consumption based on experimental results is calculated. After the analysis, the main effective parameters for temperature distribution inside a cabin and energy consumption based on CFD simulation are determined and simulation results are supplied for Design of Experiments (DOE) as input data for optimization. The best configuration with minimum energy consumption that provides minimum temperature difference between the shelves inside the cabinet is determined.
Abstract: The effect of linear stability analysis of triple diffusive convection in a vertically oscillating viscoelastic liquid of Oldroyd-B type is studied. The correction Rayleigh number is obtained by using perturbation method which gives prospect to control the convection. The eigenvalue is obtained by using perturbation method by adopting Venezian approach. From the study, it is observed that gravity modulation advances the onset of triple diffusive convection.
Abstract: Heat transfer enhancement objects like extended surfaces, fins etc. are chosen for their thermal performance as well as for other design parameters depending on various applications. The present paper is on experimental study to investigate the heat transfer enhancement through wire mesh fin arrays equipped with horizontal base plate. The data used in performance analysis were obtained experimentally for the material (mild steel) for different heat inputs such as 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 watt, by varying wire mesh diameter, fin height and spacing between two fin arrays. Using the Taguchi experimental design method, optimum design parameters and their levels were investigated. Average heat transfer coefficient was considered as a performance characteristic parameter. An L9 (33) orthogonal array was selected as an experimental plan. Optimum results were found by experimenting. It is observed that the wire mesh diameter and fin height have a higher impact on heat transfer coefficient as compared to spacing between two fin arrays.
Abstract: The problem of thermal convection in temperature and
magnetic field sensitive Newtonian ferromagnetic liquid is studied
in the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field and throughflow.
Using a combination of Galerkin and shooting techniques the critical
eigenvalues are obtained for stationary mode. The effect of Prandtl
number (Pr > 1) on onset is insignificant and nonlinearity of
non-buoyancy magnetic parameter M3 is found to have no influence
on the onset of ferroconvection. The magnetic buoyancy number, M1
and variable viscosity parameter, V have destabilizing influences on
the system. The effect of throughflow Peclet number, Pe is to delay
the onset of ferroconvection and this effect is independent of the
direction of flow.
Abstract: A local nonlinear stability analysis using a eight-mode
expansion is performed in arriving at the coupled amplitude equations
for Rayleigh-Bénard-Brinkman convection (RBBC) in the presence
of LTNE effects. Streamlines and isotherms are obtained in the
two-dimensional unsteady finite-amplitude convection regime. The
parameters’ influence on heat transport is found to be more
pronounced at small time than at long times. Results of the
Rayleigh-Bénard convection is obtained as a particular case of
the present study. Additional modes are shown not to significantly
influence the heat transport thus leading us to infer that five minimal
modes are sufficient to make a study of RBBC. The present problem
that uses rolls as a pattern of manifestation of instability is a needed
first step in the direction of making a very general non-local study of
two-dimensional unsteady convection. The results may be useful in
determining the preferred range of parameters’ values while making
rheometric measurements in fluids to ascertain fluid properties such
as viscosity. The results of LTE are obtained as a limiting case of
the results of LTNE obtained in the paper.
Abstract: Mixed convection of Cu-water nanofluid in an enclosure
with thick wavy bottom wall has been investigated numerically.
A co-ordinate transformation method is used to transform the
computational domain into an orthogonal co-ordinate system. The
governing equations in the computational domain are solved through
a pressure correction based iterative algorithm. The fluid flow
and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed for a wide range
of Richardson number (0.1 ≤ Ri ≤ 5), nanoparticle volume
concentration (0.0 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.2), amplitude (0.0 ≤ α ≤ 0.1) of
the wavy thick- bottom wall and the wave number (ω) at a fixed
Reynolds number. Obtained results showed that heat transfer rate
increases remarkably by adding the nanoparticles. Heat transfer rate
is dependent on the wavy wall amplitude and wave number and
decreases with increasing Richardson number for fixed amplitude
and wave number. The Bejan number and the entropy generation are
determined to analyze the thermodynamic optimization of the mixed
convection.
Abstract: A nonlinear study of triple diffusive convection in a rotating couple stress liquid has been analysed. It is performed to study the effect of heat and mass transfer by deriving Ginzburg-Landau equation. Heat and mass transfer are quantified in terms of Nusselt number and Sherwood numbers, which are obtained as a function of thermal and solute Rayleigh numbers. The obtained Ginzburg-Landau equation is Bernoulli equation, and it has been elucidated numerically by using Mathematica. The effects of couple stress parameter, solute Rayleigh numbers, and Taylor number on the onset of convection and heat and mass transfer have been examined. It is found that the effects of couple stress parameter and Taylor number are to stabilize the system and to increase the heat and mass transfer.
Abstract: In this numerical work, natural convection and entropy generation of Al2O3–water nanofluid in square cavity have been studied. A two-dimensional steady laminar natural convection in a differentially heated square cavity of length L, filled with a nanofluid is investigated numerically. The horizontal walls are considered adiabatic. Vertical walls corresponding to x=0 and x=L are respectively maintained at hot temperature, Th and cold temperature, Tc. The resolution is performed by the CFD code "FLUENT" in combination with GAMBIT as mesh generator. These simulations are performed by maintaining the Rayleigh numbers varied as 103 ≤ Ra ≤ 106, while the solid volume fraction varied from 1% to 5%, the particle size is fixed at dp=33 nm and a range of the temperature from 20 to 70 °C. We used models of thermophysical nanofluids properties based on experimental measurements for studying the effect of adding solid particle into water in natural convection heat transfer and entropy generation of nanofluid. Such as models of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity which are dependent on solid volume fraction, particle size and temperature. The average Nusselt number is calculated at the hot wall of the cavity in a different solid volume fraction. The most important results is that at low temperatures (less than 40 °C), the addition of nanosolids Al2O3 into water leads to a decrease in heat transfer and entropy generation instead of the expected increase, whereas at high temperature, heat transfer and entropy generation increase with the addition of nanosolids. This behavior is due to the contradictory effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. These effects are discussed in this work.
Abstract: In the present article, we investigate experimental
laminar forced convective heat transfer specifications of TiO2/water
nanofluids through conduits with different cross sections. we check
the effects of different parameters such as cross sectional shape,
Reynolds number and concentration of nanoparticles in stable
suspension on increasing convective heat transfer by designing and
assembling of an experimental apparatus. The results demonstrate
adding a little amount of nanoparticles to the base fluid, improves
heat transfer behavior in conduits. Moreover, conduit with circular
cross-section has better performance compared to the square and
triangular cross sections. However, conduits with square and
triangular cross sections have more relative heat transfer enchantment
than conduit with circular cross section.
Abstract: An evacuated tube solar collector is experimentally studied for steam generation. When the solar radiation falls on evacuated tubes, this energy is absorbed by the tubes and transferred to water with natural conduction and convection. A natural circulation of water occurs due to the inclination in tubes and header. In this experimental study, the efficiency of collector has been calculated. The result shows that the collector attains the maximum efficiency of 46.26% during 14:00 to 15:00h. Steam has been generated for two hours from 13:30 to 15:30 h on a winter day. Maximum solar intensity and maximum ambient temperatures are 795W/m2 and 19oC respectively on this day.
Abstract: A theoretical study of a humidification
dehumidification solar desalination unit has been carried out to
increase understanding the effect of weather conditions on the unit
productivity. A humidification-dehumidification (HD) solar
desalination unit has been designed to provide fresh water for
population in remote arid areas. It consists of solar water collector
and air collector; to provide the hot water and air to the desalination
chamber. The desalination chamber is divided into humidification
and dehumidification towers. The circulation of air between the two
towers is maintained by the forced convection. A mathematical
model has been formulated, in which the thermodynamic relations
were used to study the flow, heat and mass transfer inside the
humidifier and dehumidifier. The present technique is performed in
order to increase the unit performance. Heat and mass balance has
been done and a set of governing equations has been solved using the
finite difference technique. The unit productivity has been calculated
along the working day during the summer and winter sessions and
has compared with the available experimental results. The average
accumulative productivity of the system in winter has been ranged
between 2.5 to 4 (kg/m2)/day, while the average summer productivity
has been found between 8 to 12 (kg/m2)/day.
Abstract: The aim of the study is to improve the understanding
of latent and sensible thermal energy storage within a paraffin wax
media by an array of cylindrical tubes arranged both in in-line and
staggered layouts. An analytical and experimental study is carried out
in a horizontal shell-and-tube type system during melting process.
Pertamina paraffin-wax was used as a phase change material (PCM),
while the tubes are embedded in the PCM. From analytical study we
can obtain the useful information in designing a thermal energy
storage such as: the motion of interface, amount of material melted at
any time in the process, and the heat storage characteristic during
melting. The use of staggered tubes is proposed compared to in-line
layout in a heat exchanger as thermal storage. The experimental study
is used to verify the validity of the analytical predictions. From the
comparisons, the analytical and experimental data are in a good
agreement.
Abstract: Heat transfer of leaves is a crucial factor in optimal
operation of metabolic functions in plants. In order to quantify this
phenomenon in different leaves and investigate the influence of leaf
shape on heat transfer, natural convection for pine, orange and olive
leaves was simulated as representatives of different groups of leaf
shapes. CFD techniques were used in this simulation with the
purpose to calculate heat transfer of leaves in similar environmental
conditions. The problem was simulated for steady state and threedimensional
conditions. From obtained results, it was concluded that
heat fluxes of all three different leaves are almost identical, however,
total rate of heat transfer have highest and lowest values for orange
leaves, and pine leaves, respectively.
Abstract: Magnetohydrodynamic free convection fluid flow and heat transfer in a square cavity filled with an electric conductive fluid with Prandtl number of 0.7 has been investigated numerically. The horizontal bottom wall of the cavity was kept at Th while the side and the top walls of the cavity were maintained at a constant temperature Tc with Th>Tc. The governing equations written in terms of the primitive variables were solved numerically using the finite volume method while the SIMPLER algorithm was used to couple the velocity and pressure fields. Using the developed code, a parametric study was performed, and the effects of the Rayleigh number and the Hartman number on the fluid flow and heat transfer inside the cavity were investigated. The obtained results showed that temperature distribution and flow pattern inside the cavity depended on both strength of the magnetic field and Rayleigh number. For all cases two counter rotating eddies were formed inside the cavity. The magnetic field decreased the intensity of free convection and flow velocity. Also it was found that for higher Rayleigh numbers a relatively stronger magnetic field was needed to decrease the heat transfer through free convection.
Abstract: The effect of internal heat generation is applied to the Rayleigh-Benard convection in a horizontal micropolar fluid layer. The bounding surfaces of the liquids are considered to be rigid-free, rigid-rigid and free-free with the combination of isothermal on the spin-vanishing boundaries. A linear stability analysis is used and the Galerkin method is employed to find the critical stability parameters numerically. It is shown that the critical Rayleigh number decreases as the value of internal heat generation increase and hence destabilize the system.
Abstract: In this study, an analysis has been performed for
conjugate heat and mass transfer of a steady laminar boundary-layer
mixed convection of magnetic hydrodynamic (MHD) flow with
radiation effect of second grade subject to suction past a stretching
sheet. Parameters E Nr, Gr, Gc, Ec and Sc represent the dominance of
the viscoelastic fluid heat and mass transfer effect which have
presented in governing equations, respectively. The similar
transformation and the finite-difference method have been used to
analyze the present problem. The conjugate heat and mass transfer
results show that the non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid has a better heat
transfer effect than the Newtonian fluid. The free convection with a
larger r G or c G has a good heat transfer effect better than a smaller
r G or c G , and the radiative convection has a good heat transfer
effect better than non-radiative convection.
Abstract: Mixed convection in two-dimensional shallow rectangular enclosure is considered. The top hot wall moves with constant velocity while the cold bottom wall has no motion. Simulations are performed for Richardson number ranging from Ri = 0.001 to 100 and for Reynolds number keeping fixed at Re = 408.21. Under these conditions cavity encompasses three regimes: dominating forced, mixed and free convection flow. The Prandtl number is set to 6 and the effects of cavity inclination on the flow and heat transfer are studied for different Richardson number. With increasing the inclination angle, interesting behavior of the flow and thermal fields are observed. The streamlines and isotherm plots and the variation of the Nusselt numbers on the hot wall are presented. The average Nusselt number is found to increase with cavity inclination for Ri ³ 1 . Also it is shown that the average Nusselt number changes mildly with the cavity inclination in the dominant forced convection regime but it increases considerably in the regime with dominant natural convection.
Abstract: This study experimentally investigates the heat transfer effects of forced convection and natural convection under different substrate openings design. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established and implemented to verify and explain the experimental results and heat transfer behavior. It is found that different opening position will destroy the growth of the boundary layer on substrates to alter the cooling ability for both forced under low Reynolds number and natural convection. Nevertheless, having too many opening may reduce heat conduction and affect the overall heat transfer performance. This study provides future researchers with a guideline on designing and electronic package manufacturing.
Abstract: Spray chilling using air-mist nozzles has received
much attention in the food processing industry because of the
benefits it has shown over forced air convection. These benefits
include an increase in the heat transfer coefficient and a reduction in
the water loss by the product during cooling. However, few studies
have simulated the heat transfer and aerodynamics phenomena of the
air-mist chilling process for optimal operating conditions. The study
provides insight into the optimal conditions for spray impaction, heat
transfer efficiency and control of surface flooding. A computational
fluid dynamics model using a two-phase flow composed of water
droplets injected with air is developed to simulate the air-mist
chilling of food products. The model takes into consideration
droplet-to-surface interaction, water-film accumulation and surface
runoff. The results of this study lead to a better understanding of the
heat transfer enhancement, water conservation, and to a clear
direction for the optimal design of air-mist chilling systems that can
be used in commercial applications in the food and meat processing
industries.
